Soon you’ll be receiving information to sign up for the MPMCA Summer conference and
Annual Meeting August 11-14, 2011. Registration forms will be available on MPMCA’s website at
www.mpmca.org. The Conference will be held this year Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire.
We are looking forward to a weekend of fun and information! There will be considerable
free time to enjoy the many sites and things to do in the area. There are children’s activities and
babysitters are available if requested. All meetings are events are casual.

GET SMART: AGENT 99 WOULD BE BLOWN AWAY

According to a recent article on the website Tech Crunch,
a Berlin-based research organization that specializes in mobile
technology recently forecasted the worldwide smart phone
application market to reach $15 billion by 2013. The firm
Research2Guidance.com claims the global smart phone app
market has, in fact, already reaches $2.2 billion in the first six
months of 2010. And where once the development of smart
phone applications was squarely in the realm of big business
budgets, small business owners are now getting into the game,
as well.
End users can use apps to create awareness of their services
by providing users with easy mobile access to a company
website, Twitter and Facebook page, email and phone number.
Customer service can be improved by giving current customers
access to your services with greater ease,
Apps allow small users to operate “larger.” A perfect
industry example of all the in action is Clockwork Home
Services Iphone app, which allows customers to find plumbing,
electrician, heating and air conditioning experts in their area.
Customers can even request service directly from the app
itself.
Manufacturers are also using smart phone apps in new
and unique ways to drive profits and attract new customers,
RIDGID, for example, has incorporated Microsoft Tags
into their advertisements. With an app called “TagReader,”
customers can scan specially created images with their phone,
which then might open a Web page, display a message, or dial a
number. And there are no lone URL’s to type or SMS messages
to send. Starting this month, the entire RIDGID ad schedule
will have Microsoft tags.
“We strive to find new and exciting ways to engage
with those in the professional trades—in ways they already
digest other information like news and sports. The use of tag
technology is an exciting and engaging way to provide data
they want in a way they are already comfortable with,” said
RIDGID’s Steve Dyer, director of marketing communications.
“We live in a “gotta have it now” and “always on” society. Tag
technology feeds that desire to have the latest information right
at your finger tips, when and where you want it.”
Between documenting expenses and processing credit cards
from just about anywhere in the U .S. smart phone applications
have changed the way many business operate, Now, there are
even more reasons why p-h-c users and manufacturers can turn
to theses apps to enhance the way customers interact with their
products and services—and even boost their bottom lines.

Tom Williams, past MCAA President; conducted workshops on ‘Lessons Learned from
the Most Productive Foremen’ & ‘Lessons Learned from the Most Productive Project Managers’ at the UA174 Hall. Over fifty people participated in this day long learning event.
Walt Sperko conducted a workshop focusing on “Welder &
Welder Operation Performance Qualification in accordance with
ASME Section IX in a (rather large) Nutshell…” Nineteen people
participated in the event. Dave Doyle, Rite-Way Plumbing &
Heating, commented “Always good to hear from Walt. This was a
worthwhile event”. After the morning workshop, Walt audited the
local NCPWB chapter; his comment was “Good working chapter”!
Promoting a quality certified workforce, Chapter 18 of the
NCPWB has 100 certified welders. The Joint NCPWB/UA welding program has scheduled the following 2011 joint test events at
the UA174 Training Center: January 15, March 19, May 21, July 9,
Sept 17 and October 15.
The UA174 and WMMCA Executive Boards participated in
annual ‘meet and greet’ dinner event at Sam’s Joint in Coopersville,
MI. This was a good opportunity for networking in an informal
setting. Meldon Atkins, UA174 Vice-President, presented to Tom
Jasper, WMMCA Vice-President, an antique Andy Egan Company
advertisement found at a job site.

Service Hurst Mechanical in his appointment to the International Pipe Trades Joint
Training Committee for 2011.
A new Collections Policy
was instituted for UA174 fringe benefits funds. Direct
Deposit procedures have also been implemented.
The West Michigan Mechanical Contractors Association was established to represent and service, its members
in Grand Rapids, Muskegon and the Lakeshore areas of
Michigan. Association members dedicate themselves to
quality, dependability, safety, education and community
service as they serve as the primary liaison for labor relations and multi-employer collective bargaining.

We at MCA Detroit want to thank Randy Pagel of Bumler Mechanical, for his great leadership as President of our
Board of Directors and we look forward, as well, to working
with our new President, Michael Flesher of Arctic Air.
Tom Storey will be presented the Kern Medallion Award
at a dinner on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Mario’s Restaurant. This award is presented for continued work of Father
Kern, saintly Pastor of Most Holy Trinity Church in southwest Detroit in Championing people and groups in need.
Molly Forward is on an extended Leave of Absence.
Mary Chapman, has retired. She will be enjoying traveling with her husband and the antics of grandchildren!
Cassandra (Cassie) Mudloff is MCA Detroit’s main contact now. Cassie is working directly with the Safety Committee, Service Committee, and the Board of Directors.
Theresa Green, joined MCA Detroit on March 18th.
Theresa will contribute to the publishing of printed materials, website maintenance, and general office assistance.
Gailute Dedinas has been assisting Tom Storey for the
past several months in a government relations and community service roll.
After a three year hiatus, interviews are being conducted
for plumbing apprenticeship classes.
The Safety Committee is having a 3D Confined Space
presentation at their next meeting May 10th.
Andy Rubenacker instructed a class on NFPA 70 &
OSHA Electrical Safety on March 3, 2011 at the offices of
MCA Detroit.
On Thursday, January 20, Bob Armistead, President of
MCAA gave a presentation at the Skyline Club during MCA
Detroit’s Annual Meeting.
