A Christmas light show like no other
For the 12th straight Christmas
season, Deltaville is decorated like no
other local community thanks to the
efforts of Stephen Blue, his parents
Randy and Carol, and welder Drew
Hooper.
This year approximately 103,000
lights were used at Blue’s Christmas
display at the Deltaville office of
Mason Realty. If all the light strands,
extension cords, and network cables
were stretched end to end, it would
be over 5 miles long, and stretch from
Deltaville to Hartfield!
The display includes a 34,000-light
synchronized light show controlled
by 184 channels of computer animation. More than 30 trees have been
built of PVC and steel pipe, ranging
in height from 8 to 22 feet.
New this year is the 20-foot-tall
“walk-in” tree, which has no center
pole or wires so visitors can walk
inside it. “It’s become a favorite photo
spot,” said S. Blue.
Also, the walking path area through
the display has more than doubled in
size. “We encourage everyone to park
and explore the display,” said S. Blue.
For those who just want to watch
the light show from their cars, they
can tune to FM 100.9 and listen to the
music to which the light show is synchronized.
At age 12 in 1996, Stephen Blue
started making Christmas displays in
the back yard of his house. He moved
to the current Mason Realty location in 2002 and has missed just one
year since then. As always, his father
Randy has been an instrumental help.
“I wouldn’t be able to do half the stuff
we do without his help,” said Stephen.
“Mom also lent several nights of help,
and my good friend Drew Hooper
spent numerous hours helping with
setup, most importantly lending his
welding skills to the construction of
four steel color-changing trees in the
show.”
Once again, J&W Seafood helps
supply part of the electricity, which
really helps with load-balancing the
power, said Blue. The peak electrical
draw of the display is over 160 amps,
which would power a house.
Five miles of lights have been assembled for the Christmas display by Stephen Blue (and helpers) at Mason Realty on Route 33 in Deltaville.
Chronicles of Christmases past
by Larry Chowning
Middlesex County’s hometown
newspaper, the Southside Sentinel,
has always brought the Christmas
spirit to its pages in every decade
since its first issue in 1896.
Throughout the years, some names
and faces have changed, but the
joy and spirit of Christmas lives on
through the pages of the Sentinel.
In 1957, the December 26 Christmas
issue had a couple of pages of “Merry
Christmas” advertisements from
area businesses. Hurd’s Hardware in
Deltaville ran two ads on the page.
Others wishing friends and customers
a Merry Christmas were Davis Esso
Service (Perry Davis) of Urbanna,
Urbanna Shoe Repair Shop (W.P.
Libby), Haynie’s Amoco Service in
Saluda, Rappanna Theatre in Urbanna,
and Liz’s Dress Shop in Urbanna. The
largest “Merry Christmas” ad was
a “Peace on Earth” message from
Bristow Funeral Home in Saluda.
The largest ad in the paper was
from R.S. Bristow and Son Inc. in
Urbanna, the “Home of Good Goods.”
Bristow’s advertised for everyone.
“For him” the store had leather belts,
$3.50 to $5; and men’s leather wallets,
$3.50 to $10. “For her” Bristow’s had
mojud hose, $1 and up; mojud lingerie, $2.95 and up; and wrist watches,
$33.75 to $48.50. For children there

In honor of Warren and Kathy
were a small red wagon, $2.50; children’s tricycles, $4.50 and up, and
boys and girls bicycles, $52.95 and
up.
The front page of the issue featured two poems, one titled “Country
Church” written by Mrs. Margaret H.
Barnhardt of Urbanna, and the other
“From The Humble Beginnings” by
Carl Helm, which described the birth
of Jesus.
At the top of the page was Francis
P. Church’s famous answer to Virginia O’Hanlon’s question, “Is there
a Santa Claus?” A great American
editor, Church wrote the message that
touched the world. “Is it real? Ah Virginia in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa
Claus? Thank God, he lives, and he
lives forever. A thousand years from
now, Virginia, nay ten thousand years
from now, he will continue to make
glad the heart of childhood.”
Ten years later in the December 21,
1967 issue, the Sentinel looked more
modern with six photos on the front
page showcasing the annual Christmas Parade and of Santa’s arrival at
the Rappanna Theatre.
The photos featured the Oyster Festival Queen Float in the Christmas
Parade with recently-crowned Queen
Julie Marshall and Little Miss Spat
Karen Strickland. The theatre hardly
had enough seats to accommodate
nearly 400 children and parents there
to meet Santa.
There were some old and new
names on the “Merry Christmas”
advertisement pages. Liz’s Dress
Shop was a repeat from 1957, while
Duke’s Nuway Market in Deltaville,
M.C. Haynes Pharmacy in Deltaville
and Mears Esso Service in Syringa
were all newcomers to the page.
Bristow Funeral Home had changed
its name to Bristow-Faulkner Funeral
Home, but still had the largest ad on
the page.
Park Place Supermarket in Urbanna
had some Christmas sales. Turkeys
were $.35 a pound; ham, $.74 a
pound; oranges, 5-pound bag, $.49;
celery, two stalks for $.29; and red
emperor grapes, $.25 a pound.
Rich’s Supermarket at Locust Hill
had turkeys for $.29 a pound; juicy
Florida oranges, $.03 each; and
bananas, $.10 a pound.
There was an inspiring message
included in Marshall’s Drug Store’s
ad. It read: “May the spirit of Peace
fill every heart; and may the spirit of
Christmas fill your life.”
The Southside Sentinel also had a
Christmas message, “May this truly
be your happiest yuletime.”
The December 22, 1977 issue
showed some changes. Rich’s Supermarket in Locust Hill ran a full-page
ad. The store had a sale on turkeys
at $.59 a pound; fresh crisp pascal
celery at $.39 a stalk; and three heads
of California iceberg lettuce for $1.
Not to be outdone, Park Place
Supermarket had turkeys for $.57 a

by Tom Chillemi
Local families struggling to make
ends meet will have a brighter Christmas thanks to community support
through Christmas Friends Inc. Now
in its 29th year, Christmas Friends is a
grassroots charity—local folks helping the needy in their community.
One of those families consists of
a mother, father and their two boys.
The dad got hurt at his job and is now
unable to work, and the mom was
laid off due to the company shutting
down. They are living off of his disability payments and cannot afford a
very good Christmas for their sons.
Money to keep Christmas Friends
Inc. moving rolled in this week when
a whopping $11,250 was donated.
That brings the total donations so far
to $25,387, just shy of the goal of
$26,000.
In 2014, a total of $25,960 has been
spent on about 300 recipients, most of
whom are children.
All donations go directly to help
needy children and the disabled and
low-income elderly of Middlesex. All
workers are volunteers and there are
no administrative fees. All applicants
are screened by the Middlesex County
Department of Social Services and
must meed strict guidelines.
Tax-deductible donations may be
made payable to Christmas Friends
Inc., P.O. Box 549, Urbanna, VA
23175. Contributors will be recognized as Christmas Friends and their
donations will be listed in the Sentinel. Contributors may remain anonymous. Memorial contributions will
be acknowledged. Call 758-2328 for
more information.
Volunteers will deliver hundreds of
gifts on Saturday, December 20, from

Dear Santa,
I have been a pretty good
girl for the most part this year.
How are you and Mrs. Clause?
Hopefully you both are well.
How are your reindeer? I love
Rudolph, he is my favorite
reindeer! I don’t want much for
Christmas, Santa, just a bike or
maybe a mini four wheeler for
the spring so I can enjoy riding
in the warm weather. Also, I
love books any children books
would be nice, because I will
be starting school this upcoming year. Most of all, I want
you to help little boys and girls
who aren’t as fortunate as I am.
This Christmas make sure they
get everything they need and
want! My mommy and daddy
work hard to make sure I have
what I want and need, so there
isn’t much I could ask you for.
Have a safe trip Santa. I will
have your milk and cookies
and a snack for your reindeer,
too!

In the spirit of the holidays,

Christmas Holidays Open
House at the museum. The
open house will run from Saturday, December 20, through
Sunday, January 4. Admission
to the “Regional Artists Exhibition” and museum exhibits
will be free to everyone. All
are welcome.
The museum will be open
every day from 10 a.m.-4
p.m. during the open house.
Donations will be graciously
accepted.
The area community is welcome to stop by over the holiday season and enjoy the art
from by our area artists as well
as exhibits of our local history
and watermen. The gift shop
will also be open with that
special local gift.
As the last day of the
“Regional Artist Exhibition”
will be on January 4, an artists’
“meet and greet” reception
will be held Saturday, January
3, from 4-6 p.m. Come on out
and join the museum staff and
board members as we thank
all the artists for their participation. There will be a wine
and beer bar, and snacks will
be served.
After January 4, the museum
will close for a short time as
the volunteers and staff begin
resetting of the inside of the
museum for its new exhibits
and layout for the 2015 season.
Once the initial “dirty
work” is done, the museum
plans to open its doors again
for visitors to be able to watch
the progress as the exhibits are
built and assembled. Keep an
eye on the Sentinel for details
and schedules.
The museum exhibit work
group has been busy as bees
working on research and
design of a series of innovative new exhibits to tell the
story of our local history and
maritime tradition. Exhibits
on local history, navigation,
propulsion, charting, boat
construction, and boat builders are only a part of the informative exhibits being planned
to populate the museum.
A replication of a Deltaville
boat-building shop, complete
with workbench, tools and a
round-sterned deadrise nearing completion, will be one of
the core exhibits. This exhibit
also is planned to include
information on all the boat
builders who made our area
the “Boat Building Capitol of
the Bay” in its heyday.

Clarification
Levi E. Braxton Jr.
An advertisement in the
December 11 issue of the
Southside Sentinel erroneously
stated that a Festival of Lessons and Carols would be held
at Philippi Church on December 19. The actual date of the
festival was Sunday, December
14. There will be no service at
the church on December 19.

Philippi Choir performs Nine Lessons
and Carols with strings, flute and bells
On the evening of December 14, the choir of
Philippi Christian Church, Disciples of Christ
(DOC), in Deltaville performed the traditional
Nine Lessons and Carols that began in the
United Kingdom in the 19th-century and was
broadcast over BBC radio each Christmas for
several decades.
The Philippi sanctuary was filled to near
capacity for the service, which was led by Rev.
June Haislip with music conducted by Philippi
Director of Music Aaron Ward. The Philippi
Choir sang to stringed instruments, organ, flute
and bells played by guest musicians.
The service consists of lessons read from
Biblical texts describing the time leading to
and including the birth of Christ. Each reading
is followed by a carol appropriate to the text.
Two traditional carols were sung at the end of
the service.
The service was followed by a reception
in the fellowship hall that was equally well
attended with a serious showing of the cookiebaking talents of the Philippi congregation.
“This was the second performance of the
service in as many years at Philippi since Mr.
Ward became director of music, and we certainly hope that it will continue,” said a church
spokesperson.
Urbanna Methodist Church

choir, and praise team “Jubal.”
All are invited to attend.
On Christmas Eve, there will
be a 5 p.m. service of Holy
Communion and Candle Lighting.
“We welcome all visitors to
worship with us,” said a church
spokesperson.
‘Fellowship

On Sunday, December 21, at

For the fourth year, Hank

to perform some of their favorite songs after a very successful cabaret at the UUFR just
last month. Expect a nice mix
of both popular and seasonal

All Saints Anglican Church plans
Service of Lessons & Carols Sunday
All Saints Anglican Church
in Saluda, led by The Reverand
Father Jeffrey Johnson, rector,
will have a service of Lessons
and Carols on Sunday, December 21, at 11 a.m. to which the
public is cordially invited.
The service is one of Christian worship celebrating the
birth of Jesus in nine short
Bible readings interspersed
with anthems and the congregational singing of familiar
Christmas carols.
The first Festival of Nine
Lessons and Carols was held
in King’s College Chapel at
Cambridge University in 1918,
was revised in 1919 and while
the music may vary from yearto-year, the readings have
remained the same. Annual
radio broadcasts of this service
reach a worldwide audience
through the BBC and American Public Radio.
Each service always begins
