No Play starts again As the days are getting longer and winter is nearly over it is time to start wearing our Sun Smart hats again. Next week all students and staff are required to wear hats that protect their face, neck and ears, i.e. legionnaire, broad brimmed or bucket hats, whenever they are outside. Baseball or peak caps and visors are not considered a suitable alternative. Reminders will be given next week to help ease us all into remembering our hats. However, from Monday 18th August (Week 5) anyone not wearing a Sun Smart hat will be required to stay in the shade. Racism. It Stops With Me Charnwood-Dunlop School Bettington Circuit, CHARNWOOD ACT Ph 62057322 Fax 62057321 [email protected] Principal: Debbie Martens Deputy Principal: Nicole Nicholson Senior Team Leader: Ryan Lindsay Junior Team Leader: Ian Sylvester BPIEC Team Leader: Wendy Waring Field Officer: Will Johnston _________________________________________ School Board Chair: Angela Staples Ph 0414735110 P&C President: Anne Rowe Ph 0407402993 A group of students from our Introductory English Centre were invited to sing at a recent public awareness campaign launched at the ACT Legislative Assembly. The campaign called Racism: It Stops With Me invites us all to think about what we can do individually and as a society to counter racism wherever it happens. At our school we are currently focusing on the value of ‘Acceptance’ which fits well with the message of Racism: It Stops With Me. The website www.itstopswithme.humanrights.go v.au contains resources and information about racism and ideas for how each of us can make a difference in countering racism. Here are some resources from the website: Racism can take many forms, such as jokes or comments that cause offence or hurt, sometimes unintentionally; name calling or verbal abuse, harassment or intimidation, or commentary in the media or online that inflames hostility towards certain groups. In Australia racist behaviour can be directed at members of any racial group but some people are more vulnerable to racism and discrimination, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. What can we do to stop racism? If you see racist behaviour and it feels safe to do so – say something. For example it could be as simple as saying “Why don’t you just leave him/her alone?” If it doesn’t feel safe to say something then tell someone responsible like a teacher, bus driver, shop assistant or the police Think about how you could support the person who is the target of abuse by sitting or standing next to them and checking if they are OK. Help us to take a stand against racism at CharnwoodDunlop School because Racism Stops with Us! Principal Congratulations to the following students who have earned a wrist band for consistently demonstrating our REACH attitudes: Wendy Waring and Rob Matthews were both presented with badges and certificates by AEU president Glenn Fowler for 30 years of service. Wow - we applaud you both! Parent-Teacher Interviews Thank you to all families who used the online booking system and met with teachers during the past fortnight. We really value this communication opportunity and highly encourage any of you who were unable to make it during this period to see your child’s teacher and book a meeting to discuss semester one progress and goals for semester two. Car Parking Issues RESPECT: Nicole Le, Paige Fairall, Izaak Custodio, Ryu Nguyen, Tyreece Ryan, Jack Rogan, Tristan Mitchell, Kianah Waters, Jeremy Sibly, Callum Thomas, Samara Doherty, Minnie Kunlamat, Casey Ryan, Taylor Harrison, Madison Power EXCELLENCE: ACCEPTANCE: Samara Doherty, Minnie Kunlamat, COMMITMENT: Josh Andreatta, Caitlin Bucat, Noah DePlater, Kaiden Donnelly, Lily Drew, Ada Hatcher, Robbie Jones, Jenna Kamppi, James Logue, Jack O’Donnell, Ben Parry, Jessica Punds, Rosalia Rakete, Jack Siharath, Emily Staples, Samara Doherty, Trent McGrath, Paige Howie, Minnie Kunlamat, Nathan Rourke, Casey Ryan, Jermaine Pangai, Tyson Cassidy, Jaan Celik, Jessica Charman, Elliot Cleaves, Ben Doherty, Kody Donnelly, Rhianna Hutchings, Will Jones, Zeke Kamppi, Jezreel Lopez, Kelsey Merrigan, Lachlan Morton, Hayden Oliver, Daniel Ruuskanen, Alyssa Scott, Connor Thompson, Tiasha Ursino, Liana West, Byron Withers HONESTY: Samara Doherty, Paige Howie, Casey Ryan Thank you for upholding our school values and setting a positive example for your peers! This fortnight as a school we are focussing on ACCEPTANCE. At CDS we believe acceptance is about being willing to recognise and respect the beliefs and practices of others and valuing differences. Now this is COMMITMENT! Two of our teachers were recognised last week at our staff meeting for their long term contribution to the ACT teaching profession. At the recent P&C meeting concerns were once again raised in regards to dangerous parking behaviour at 3pm pick up time. Many families, particularly those with young children and babies in prams, are finding it challenging to walk their children safely from class to their car due to the number of people illegally parking on the kurb and pathways. We urge you to please be considerate of others at pick up time and make child safety your number one concern. Mobile Phone Policy Thank you to those of you who provided feedback on the draft policy that was sent home in week one. We will now take the policy to the board for endorsement. CHILL program Last Friday afternoon we recommenced our CHILL groups. In term 2 the focus was investigating our own cultural identities and discussing what it means to be Australian. This term we are learning about different cultures in greater detail. Following on from NAIDOC week the focus will be Aboriginal culture, specifically looking at family, identity, land. Students heard stories from the Yarning Strong series, sampled bush tucker and learnt about family trees and the classic kinship system. Fresh Tastes Friday Our fortnightly special snacks and lunches look like they are going to be a hit. We have been overwhelmed with positive responses from students and families keen to buy these yummy and nutritious foods. Thank you to Elizabeth Hickey our Student Wellbeing Officer and our Year 6 Food and Health representatives Corey Watson and Phoebe Spurr for getting this initiative up and running. Our Mac and Cheese pasta and jelly and fruit snack brought smiles to faces on a freezing cold Friday. against all other teams in the B grade from the Northside, winning all their games and proceeding to the finals day. The Southside B grade competition was called off due to bad weather so we ended up playing the third placed team from the whole southside. However, thanks to the boys ability to play as a team and some good effort in training sessions at lunchtimes, we beat Queanbeyan Public School convincingly with a final score of 20-0. Tony Alofipo scored two tries and Prince Gill and Dom Burt Gardner scored one apiece in the victory. The whole team displayed excellent sportsmanship and were a credit to the school. Tony Alofipo was awarded the man of the match award. The win shows some of the talent we have here at Charnwood-Dunlop School and is the first time in several years the Rugby League team has won a territory wide competition. Field Officer Make sure you bring $2.50 next Friday 15th August to enjoy a yummy lunch if you haven’t pre ordered. Deputy Principal Sullivan Shield Last Thursday the Charnwood-Dunlop boy’s Rugby League team competed in the final of the Sullivan Plate, part of the NRL’s annual Sullivan Shield competition. After participating in a grading day at the start of June and being placed in the B grade, the boys then competed P & C Meeting 6.30pm, August 26, 2014 All welcome School Parliament News The year 6 students meet every Monday from 12pm – 3pm. On the odd weeks we do a parliament sitting and the even weeks we visit classes to get ideas and work on bills or organisation of our projects. In our first parliament sitting this term we passed a number of bills such as: Term 3 disco to be run by year 6 Junior House Cup New basketball hoops for juniors Year 6 fun day Canteen special lunches Year 6 yearbook These bills then moved to the senate. 4 of the bills were passed and two were sent back for amendments. The year 6s are now working on each of these bills as mini projects. The disco is going to be run as a parliament fundraiser on Friday 12 September. We have had two canteen lunches, last week we served fruit jelly and at the end of last term we had a yummy Mac & Cheese pasta. So far we have raised $1100 but we still need to buy the ingredients for the next 4 lunches. Reading Eggs is a site that is worth exploring. Have a look at http://readingeggs.com.au/apps/ . Raz Kids is an American site that charges a membership fee, but might be worth exploring for you family. Other apps that might be right for your child are: Endless Alphabet – for young children to explore the alphabet. Reading For Details helps students practice identifying the 5W's of reading — who, what, where, when, and why. After reading a short story, the student is asked a reading detail question, Aesop's Quest, based on Aesop's Fables, is a learning game where the student must remember elements of a story to complete a level. Starfall—Learn to Read The Opposites app helps children learn vocabulary and the corresponding antonyms by challenging them to match up pairs of opposing words in increasingly difficult levels Speech with Milo: Sequencing is a sequencing and storytelling game. Slide the three picture cards into correct order (first, next, and last), then watch the story come to life. If you find a reading app that would be great for the rest of our school community to know about, please let me know. Reading Eggs and Eggspress In the past the school organised, monitored and paid for student memberships in the internet based ABC Reading Eggs and Eggspress programs. The membership was cancelled due to the small number of students using the program. We are considering purchasing a membership again, but it really does depend on the number of families who would be willing to commit to regularly using the program to make it economically worthwhile. If your family would like to join the program and be willing to commit to using it, please complete the slip and return it to the front office. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Interest in Reading Eggs and Eggspress Return Slip My family would like the school to purchase memberships in Reading Eggs and Eggspress. I understand we need to have an internet connection at home and that the program can be used on iPads, PC’s and andriods. The children in my family who would use the program are: _____________________________________ ________________________________________ _____________________________________ _________________________________________ Parent Name ______________________________________________________ (please print) Walking School Bus The School has had recent interest from a number of families in starting a walking school bus at CDS. Many families find drop off and pick up times a challenge with work commitments and children attending multiple schools. The parking congestion is also an ongoing concern that could be alleviated with more students walking to and from school. Our aim is to set up a fixed walking route around Charnwood and potentially into Dunlop. If you are interested in the possibility of using or supporting the establishment of a walking school bus please see one of our friendly P & C representatives. ACTION’s New School Services Network On Monday 1 September 2014 a significantly enhanced ACTION bus network, including more direct routes, better connections, increased frequency and improved weekend services, will commence. This will include a new school services network. Over the past 12 months ACTION has reviewed all school services and school service patronage. As a result changes to the school services network have been made to increase network efficiency and reinvest resources into the morning and afternoon peaks. Some school routes are unchanged and others have been redesigned or merged. Where patronage levels no longer support a dedicated school route this has been replaced by regular route services. Approximately 59% of school student boardings are already on regular route services. As this new ACTION school services network may affect many students we are providing four weeks’ notice to schools, students and parents to help them prepare. Information about school bus services and regular routes which service schools is now available on the ACTION website www.action.act.gov.au and details of any changes affecting your school are listed below. A dedicated schools information hotline has also been established to handle enquiries. Thank you in advance and should you have any queries please contact the dedicated schools information hotline on 6205 5033.
