The herbarium collection of Andreas R. Wolny in the Gymnasium of Sremski
Karlovci contains the specimens of well-known Serbian botanist Dr. Josif Pančić,
who donated them during and after his visit to the Gymnasium. Also, one small
part of the specimens from this collection is deposited in the herbarium of the
Institute for Nature Conservation of Vojvodina Province in Novi Sad. A list of 281
herbarium sheets with 295 taxa is presented for the first time to the botanical
community, with detailed information on where and when the plants were
collected, and notes on the specimens and revision data.
Key words: herbarium collection, Josif Pančić, Andreas R. Wolny, Gymnasium of Sremski Karlovci
INTRODUCTION
During his long botanical career Dr. Josif Pančić (1814-1888) investigated the plant life in the territories of present-day Serbia, Montenegro,
Romania, Bulgaria, and, to a lesser extent, Croatia, Hungary and Austria,
38
PERIĆ, R. ET AL.: PANČIĆ’S SPECIMENS IN HERBARIUM OF A. WOLNY
which resulted in the first national floras of the Principalities of Serbia
(Pančić 1874, 1884), Montenegro (Pančić 1875), Bulgaria (Pančić 1883,
1886), as well as many other botanical papers (Janković 1970). He gave
special attention to gathering a lot of plant material, which he later included
in his herbarium collection. The majority of these specimens are deposited
in the Herbarium of the Institute of Botany and Botanical Garden
“Jevremovac” - BEOU (Thiers 2012), within the special collection Herbarium Pancicianum (Vukojičić et al. 2011). A small part of his specimens is
deposited in the Herbarium of the Natural History Museum in Belgrade
(BEO, Thiers 2012) and in the herbarium collection of Andreas Rafael
Wolny in the Gymnasium of Sremski Karlovci. Also, an unknown number
of specimens are scattered through other Herbaria, mainly in central
Europe.
The herbarium collection of Andreas Rafael Wolny (1757-1827) in the
Gymnasium of Sremski Karlovci is the oldest known collection in Serbia,
with approximately 7300 sheets. Within this collection are stored specimens of vascular plants, mosses, lichens, fungi and algae, principally
originating from the territory of the former Habsburg Monarchy, including
the present-day province of Vojvodina (Serbia). It can be divided into three
different collections: authentic material of Wolny (197 sheets), general
school collection (about 6800 sheets) and material of Josif Pančić (270
sheets). After an official decision of the Institute for Protection and Study
of cultural monuments (nr. 240/50, March 13th, 1950), the herbarium
collection of Andreas Wolny in the Gymnasium of Sremski Karlovci was
inventoried and protected by the state (Marčetić 1950, 1952).
Wolny was highly respected both by his contemporaries (Waldstein &
Kitaibel 1802, Sadler 1820, 1830, Rochel 1828, Schuster 1829, Haberle
1830) and by subsequent botanists like Kanitz (1865), Schulzer et al.
(1866), Janka, Borbás and Jávorka (Bunke 1996) as well. Because of its
great historical and scientific importance many botanists (A. Rochel, A.
Kanitz, L. Adamović, A. Forenbacher, N. Košanin) visited Wolny’s collection (Marčetić 1950). During his botanical excursion to Srem in 1857 Pančić also visited and studied Wolny’s collection (Hirc 1919, Mitranović
1964). As was usual for that time he donated herbarium material during his
visit (he also sent a few specimens afterwards). This part of Pančić’s botanical legacy from the earliest known period of his work is presented for the
first time to the botanical community.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
The list of herbarium exsiccates of Josif Pančić in Andreas R. Wolny’s
collection is given according to their number in the Herbarium Inventory
BULLETIN OF THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM, 2012, 5: 37-71.
39
(198-467) with a few additional sheets without number. All information
from labels is stored in the database in original form. Classification and
proper determination of each taxon were checked. Processed information
includes revised or properly and fully written names of taxa and authors, as
well as various abbreviations with updated toponymy and notes concerning
the sheets and specimens characteristics. If the identification was either
wrong, or still valid but now considered a synonym (Tutin et al. 1968,
1972, 1976, 1980, 1993), the appropriate taxon (specific or subspecific)
name was entered after the revision of the material. During the review of
the herbarium collection all specimens were photographed in the original.
Regarding the List of herbarium exsiccates in the following chapter, the
valid names were marked with bold letters. If names were misapplied or
representing synonyms, standard symbols were used (“–” misapplication of
name; “≡” isotypic synonyms; “=” heterotypic synonyms). In cases where
some taxa are considered to be particularly interesting from the chorological, historical or nature protection point of view their significance is
discussed in a special section (Obs.).

It should be mentioned that an additional 11 sheets with specimens
collected by Pančić are deposited in the Herbarium of the Institute for
Nature Conservation of Vojvodina Province. This herbarium material was
accidentally found, along with a few hundred other sheets, in the
Petrovaradin fortress powder stockroom about 35-40 years ago (V. Stojšić
pers. comm.). According to the characteristics (size, shape and colour) and
label information of the sheets, it is clear that they belong to the Pančić

collection in the Gymnasium herbarium. Because they lack the inventory
mark given by Marčetić and Babić who made the first full collection
inventory in 1950 (Marčetić 1950), it is evident that this material was
separated from the main collection before December 1950. These sheets
were probably lost during the many relocations of the whole collection in
the past (at least after the construction of the new Gymnasium building in
1891 or during the World Wars).

The herbarium collection of Josif Pančić at the Gymnasium of Sremski
Karlovci, with additional sheets in the Institute for Nature Conservation of
Vojvodina Province comprises 281 sheets placed in 3 boxes (two in the
Gymnasium and one in the Institute). Within this material there are 295
taxa on species (278) and subspecies level (30) classified into 169 genera

Maire & Petitmengin, Mt Parnassos (Greece).
and 49 families. Almost one third of the herbarium specimens in this
collection lacks information about the date and the locality of collecting (76
sheets). Only 126 sheets include information on the year of collecting the
plant material.
Pančić’s collection from Sremski Karlovci contains herbarium specimens of plants collected in the territories of Serbia (129), Romania (27),
Hungary (12) and Austria (6). In addition, this collection includes the herbarium material acquired through exchange from France (12), Greece (11)

65
and Italy (7). It is interesting to note that in this collection there are more
specimens from France and Greece than in the Herbarium Pancicianum of
the Institute of Botany and the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”, University
of Belgrade, that contains only 9 exsiccates from France and 7 from Greece
(Vukojičić et al. 2011). However, a significant number (76) of sheets lack
information about the locality. The most important part of this collection
are herbarium specimens of 15 endemic species (Achillea umbellata,
Asperula capitata, Eryngium serbicum, Eryngium palmatum, Evax perpusilla, Gagea graeca, Leontodon hirtus, Malcolmia graeca, Minuartia stellata (Fig. 1), Pedicularis ascendens, Pedicularis cenisia, Primula pedemontana, Saponaria lutea, Saxifraga biflora and Seseli leucospermum). In
addition, there are specimens of Eryngium serbicum (Fig. 2) and E.
palmatum originating from the locus classicus, and probably representing
type material of these two species. The collection also contains exsiccates
of Achillea ptarmica, species that disappeared from the territory of Serbia
(Stevanović & Vukojičić 1999: 98), Hippuris vulgaris, critically endangered species in Serbia (Vučković & Panjković 1999), as well as Fritillaria
montana from Mt Medvednik and Lysimachia nemorum from Mt Murtenica, likely to be a new localites for these species in Serbia.
Fig. 2. - Herbarium specimen of Eryngium serbicum Pančić, Dobrača (Serbia).
Collection analysis showed that Pančić’s specimens in Sremski Karlovci dated from the very beginning of his botanical work. This period
includes three subsequent periods: student days at University of Pest (1832-1843), “Ruskberg period” (1844-1845), and early years in Serbia (1846-1858). The oldest material originated from Hungary and dates from 1836 to
66
PERIĆ, R. ET AL.: PANČIĆ’S SPECIMENS IN HERBARIUM OF A. WOLNY
1839 (Asperula arvensis, Cirsium pannonicum, Juncus subnodulosus, Ranunculus pedatus, Phyteuma orbiculare, Seseli leucospermum). During the
“Ruskberg period”, Pančić explored flora of the Carpathian Mountains
(especially the Transylvanian part) and the Carinthian Alps. In this collection there are 27 specimens from this period (Fig. 3). The third period

coincides with Pančić’s practice of medicine in Jagodina and Kragujevac
(1846-1853) and first years in Belgrade Lyceum (from 1853 onwards).
Although the majority of Pančić’s specimens are deposited in the
Herbarium of the Institute of Botany and the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”, also of great significance is the minor part of his specimens in the

special collection Herbarium Pancicianum. Besides its historical and
cultural value, this herbarium material is of great importance for present
and future botanical explorations especially throughout the Balkan Peninsula and needs to be fully digitized which would prevent damage to the
material after its use and properly presented to a wider audience.
