M zi a g a ne From the Director Looking back over the eight years it has been my pleasure to serve our neighborhood, I’m struck by not only by how much has changed, but how much has stayed the same. During my 20 years as a resident of Kamm’s Corners, my lovely next-door neighbor has been there the whole time. I still buy my meat and other goodies at K&K Portage Market, and my newspaper is delivered by the same family at the same time every day. I like that about our neighborhood. I suspect your experience has been similar, and that you like it too. Of course, things do change. Lots of positive change has come to Kamm’s Corners over the past year or two, and more will follow. We have a fancy new streetscape, complete with electrified and irrigated planter boxes, new benches, historic lighting, and the like. We have new businesses, including the new Marc’s, Panini’s, and Si Senor Mexican Restaurant, with more on the way. Walk up and have a look. If you haven’t seen our “downtown” lately, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. At KCDC, we’re much busier than we were eight years ago. This magazine is much larger, partly in color, and now delivered four times a year. Our “Asphalt Cinema” just completed its 6th season, and Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market completed its third. Now we’re adding an indoor market. You can “friend” us on Facebook, and follow our “tweets.” We’re re-habbing houses, renovating storefronts, buying buildings, making plans, and generally doing everything we can to keep what’s great and to effect repairs where things are out of whack. We’ll continue to do that and more. Meanwhile, we need you to do your part. Spend as much of your money locally as you can, especially this holiday season. Reward our merchants with your business. Take time to really think about the array of products available right here, and put your money where your house is. And, if you want to give us a boost, join us at “Wine in the Holidays,” our only fundraiser of the year, at Puritas Nursery on December 3rd. (See article page 6.) It’s a great party to get you into the holiday spirit, and you’ll see many of your neighbors there. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and Staff of Kamm’s Corners Development, have a safe, happy, and meaningful holiday season. And as always, let us know how we’re doing. Our Cover: Our holiday cover photo this year, which we are sure everyone can relate to, is an original composition by neighborhood resident and noted professional photographer, Gary Yasaki, Yasaki Photographic. You can reach Gary at 216-781-7330. Pat McCafferty Vice-President... She was selected to take part in the 5th Cohort Multicultural Executive Development Program (MEDP) through the YMCA of the USA. Through a comprehensive application, narrative essay, resume and other supporting documents, the selection committee felt that Monic embodied potential qualities to become a successful leader in the YMCA Movement. Only 13 candidates were selected nationally. The YMCA of Greater Cleveland offers a 50% off joiner fee special every January. For more information about the 2010 membership special, visit www.clevelandymca.org or call the West Park-Fairview Family YMCA Membership Director, Alyssa Shepherd at 216-941-5410. You may also reach her at [email protected]. The West Park-Fairview Family YMCA is at 15501 Lorain Avenue. Puritas Nursery is again featuring a magnificent holiday train display. To keep informed of neighborhood news, sign up for KCDC’s e-newsletter, if you haven’t already done so. To opt in, visit our website at www.kammscorners.com. Updates will come monthly, with an extra issue occasionally thrown in for news that we feel is time sensitive or of great importance to you. If you ever misplace your copy of Kamm’s Corners Magazine, remember you may view it online at our website at www.kammscorners.com. … by Councilman Marty Keane News from Ward 21 and City Hall Dear Neighbors: Happy Holidays! May this issue of Kamm’s Corners Magazine be the start of a healthy and happy holiday season. The recent election came and went with yet another strong showing in our ward, soon to be known as Ward 19. On January 4th, most of what was Ward 21 will be called Ward 19. We lost some neighbors to the southeast and gained others to the northeast. Feel free to call me if you have any questions on the redistricting. Simply put, I am honored and blessed to represent the neighborhoods I love for another term in City Council, whatever our ward number. Looking back at last year’s holiday magazine, I am amazed that the groundbreaking for the Lorain Avenue Streetscape was the cover feature and occurred November 6, 2008. We have come a long way since then. Our downtown Kamm’s Corners is being reinvented. The removal of the power lines alone is a huge improvement. The addition of new sidewalks, planters, benches, and lighting will attract more businesses and economic development opportunities. Of course, the new infrastructure is an attraction to our community. But, more importantly, the people who call West Park home are the real reason businesses locate here – we who remain committed to shopping locally and to maintaining our properties. I can guarantee you that the small business owners along Lorain Avenue, Rocky River Drive, and Warren Road – the shop keepers at Warren Village and Kamms Plaza shopping centers will tell you the same thing. Our commitment to our neighbors, 5 our neighborhood, and our local merchants is the best way to assure our long-term success. Puritas Avenue re-surfacing is nearly complete. Getting this project done using our own capital dollars in such a difficult economy was no small feat! Thanks to everyone for their patience during construction. Please remember to maintain the speed limit when the road is nice and smooth and the barrels are gone. Also, no matter what street you live on, for safety’s sake, please refrain from putting your leaves and snow in the street. Yes, we are making great progress here and have the continued support of Mayor Jackson. However, the City of Cleveland as a whole is facing some serious financial challenges. A significant budgetary shortfall looms in fiscal year 2010. Though efficiency measures and belt-tightening efforts by Mayor Jackson and City Council to cut costs while maintaining service has left us in a much better position than other cities, difficult decisions remain. The draft budget for the City is due in December followed by the Mayor’s Estimated Budget for 2010 in February. Those budget exercises will determine what we are up against and what we need to do to thrive. Perhaps I covered too much in this little column. What I wish most to say is Happy Holidays! God bless you and your families, especially during this wonderful time of year. Cherish the things you have and make any effort you can to help those who have not. e an e K y t r a M in the Holidays Holiday Fundraiser To Benefit KCDC Uncork the Fun and join us for Wine in the Holidays (and Beer!) on Thursday, December 3rd, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Puritas Nursery, 19201 Puritas Avenue Inside the beautifully decorated nursery you will find a mix of great wine and beer, delicious appetizers, loads of fun, and live music by local favorites Brand New Hat. Cecilia’s Song, an a cappella choir from Saint Joseph Academy, will sing a medley of holiday tunes. Everyone is invited to join in the caroling. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive under the clock by horse-drawn sleigh to greet the crowd. Then all will follow Santa to Kamms Plaza for Winter Wonderland fun from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Events will take place in two locations: one for the photos with Santa, refreshments, and prize drawings, and the other for face painting, balloon creations, and crafts. Santa’s helpers will be directing. Enjoy a barbershop quartet, horsedrawn sleigh rides, and activities throughout the evening. Free refreshments will be served. You may be an instant winner of a great door prize donated by local merchants. At around 8 p.m. a big drawing will be held for two televisions, a DVD player, and an MP3 player, all donated by Kamms Plaza. (Adults only for the big drawing, please.) Anyone whose ticket is called, must be present to win. This year, the sound system will also be directed outside so those in line for the sleigh rides will also hear the numbers being called. Sleigh rides around Kamms Plaza will be offered free of charge on Friday nights in December on the 4th, 11th, and 18th. The complimentary sleigh rides depart from the tower corner. Heavy rain or ice will cause the rides to be cancelled. Otherwise, bundle up and enjoy! Cecilia’s Song Cecilia’s Song was founded in 2000 at Saint Joseph Academy for the purpose of giving high school-aged girls an opportunity to sing challenging four-part a cappella music for audiences throughout Greater Cleveland. Named for the song sung by the Patron Saint of Music on the day she died, Cecilia’s Song has performed at benefits, sporting events, and other special occasions since their inception. Back row from left: Julie Simo, Megan Yantko, Annie Kostel, Maddie Lanning. Front row from left: Laura Kalynchuk, Veronica Riverad, Kayte Tuleta, Molly Maloney, Jessica Olle. 7 Streetscape Improvement Project Sees the Light! The new light fixtures are up on the north side of Lorain Avenue. Not only do the lights look great, but they also cast a pleasant white light on the sidewalk and storefronts that brings warmth to the street. It’s particularly apparent when compared to the old light fixtures remaining on the south side. Crews will continue to work on the lights and the removal of the old poles and wiring for the next several weeks. See a new light pole installation below. Also, have you seen that our new planters now have vegetation and trees in them? Because streetscape planners had the foresight to install electric outlets in them, holiday lighting will be able to be installed on the trees in years to come, making for a festive “downtown” Kamm’s Corners! Shopping Kamm’s Makes Everyone Richer NECK PAIN? BACK PAIN? Locally owned independent businesses return a great deal back to the community. It’s called the multiplier effect: one dollar spent at a locally owned business comes back to the community through city taxes, employee wages, and contributions to local non-profit organizations. So, please keep your money here in Kamm’s whenever possible. You can grab an espresso at Savor the Moment or Common Grounds, pick up some fresh fish at Seven Seas Seafood, or get pet supplies at Kamm’s Plaza Pet & Supply. Shop for unique gifts or services at any number of local stores that add to the character that is Kamm’s Corners. How and when the heavy vault was transported eight miles from West Park to downtown Cleveland is a mystery. After West Park was annexed to Cleveland on November 7, 1922, its public property, including the city hall building, was turned over to Cleveland. The safe, clearly labeled “City of West Park,” may have been moved to Cleveland at that time. Names can be in black and white letters. You can do as many as you like. The end product might take a different shape as determined by the letters chosen. Several frame and matting options are available. Prices start at $10 a letter and $25 for the frame. If you have your own idea in mind, just let Robin know and she will see what she can come up with! Call Robin at 216-832-2581. Names in a Frame by Robin Wieland How badly did Cleveland need a safe that someone was willing to haul the heavy object all that way? It just doesn’t seem like something you’d do unless it was really necessary. There must be an untold story behind the move. If any readers can shed light on it, please contact me at 216-252-9850. In about 1977, when the police station moved to its present building on West 130th, the old city hall was torn down. An addition was added to the fire station and now covers the original site of the old city hall. In any case, we’re lucky to have discovered the safe still in existence. The old vault is a significant relic of West Park’s history but now serves only to store office supplies. Perhaps some way can be found to bring it home where it can be put on public display as a reminder of our heritage. Councilman Martin J. Keane has been exploring this possibility for the historical society. Local Resident Frames Your Name To see a sample of Names in a Frame stop in at Savor the Moment coffee shop on Rocky River Drive. Save St. Pat’s Update Parishioners are pursuing efforts to save the church from being shuttered by Bishop Richard Lennon. The Save St. Pat’s Committee along with parishioners will continue to the next phase of the appeal process, if the Vatican does not answer favorably or soon they will appeal to Rome again via the Apostolic Signatura, which can be likened to a type of Supreme Court at the Vatican. This step will require an Italian canon advocate that is costly, however the St. Pat’s parishioners are ready for the expenditure and the necessary action to keep St. Patrick Church open to continue to serve the West Park community. West Park residents can check out the website www.stpatrickwp.org/savestpats for updates and info on how to help. West Park United Church of Christ Celebrates 150 Years of Service to the West Park Community West Park United Church of Christ, founded by nine people in 1859 in what was once known as Rockport Township, has spent 2009 celebrating 150 years of service to the Kamm’s Corners community with a series of special events. “Charter members of the church included Benjamin Mastick and Lavinia Triskett, names that continue to live on to this very day,” observed Licensed Minister Jim Furry, a 55-year member of the congregation, which is located at 3909 Rocky River Drive. “West Park UCC has played a central role in the history of this area, serving as an anchor for the community,” added Reverend Lawrence Craig. The original plot of land for the church was purchased from the Nichols family in 1860 at a cost of $75, with a church building constructed a year later at a total cost of $1,500. Since that time, the church has undergone a number of major renovations with the addition of an education building and fellowship hall, which are used by a variety of community service groups throughout the area. The 320-member congregation is actively involved in the community and has invested more than $100,000 in its church buildings and grounds in recent years, installing a new carillon, replacing an antiquated boiler system, upgrading the sound system in its sanctuary, and renovating Bartter Hall, which at one time hosted the West Park Kiwanis Club meetings. However, the congregation’s ongoing investment in its grounds and buildings are only part of the story. “West Park UCC members are actively involved in the mission and ministry of Christ. This is emphasized in the church’s outreach efforts throughout the Kamm’s Corners area,” observes Reverend Craig, who was called to lead the church in 1998. “Our members have volunteered more than 30,000 hours at Fairview Hospital and donated more than 2,000 hours to Meals on Wheels,” he said. “Others in our congregation have been tutors and aides at Valley View, Almira and Newton D. Baker schools, and we house a highly regarded pre-school called Discovery World. West Park United Church of Christ is more than buildings. It is people, people committed to the ministry and mission of Jesus Christ by serving others in the West Park area.” As part of its 150 years of service to the community, West Park United Church of Christ held a community concert on Saturday, June 27th and organized a special 150th Anniversary church service at 10:00 a.m. on June 28th. A gala dinner party took place on September 26th at the Holy Spirit Party Center that included an awards program, music, and dancing. KCDC was pleased to present a special plaque in recognition of this milestone. To learn more about West Park UCC and its outreach efforts, call 216-6717228 or visit www.westparkucc.org. Just plenty of space and weights to get the job done combined with a welcoming and attentive staff. Communicating a big vision requires a powerful image and during his first year of business Tom was never happy just continuing with the Pro Fitness name and look. He knew what he wanted, but couldn’t quite put it into words and images himself. Fortunately, he found just what he was looking for when he met Jerry Beck in March of this year. Not only was Jerry a hard core strength athlete who very much “got” the concepts that Tom was trying to convey, he was also a very talented artist who had already created an apparel line around the Iron Asylum concept which he originated. As a synergistic result of their meeting, Jerry became part of Tom’s team and Pro Fitness became the Iron Asylum, complete with a full service, on site, custom screen printing operation. “It was a total transformation,” Tom recalls. “We not only had great new logo art and access to Jerry’s Iron Asylum line of apparel, but we continued to improve our equipment and services.” The results of the efforts of Tom and his staff are obvious. Just consider that the Iron Asylum now features: …by Joe Outlaw Where the Weak Become Strong Lifetime neighborhood resident Tom Slomka, known as “TJ” to his friends, has always been engaged in sports and fitness. He grew up on Westdale and currently lives on Woodbury. A Saint Ed’s grad, he played football in high school. He has always been part of the Kamm’s Corners neighborhood. When he was in his early twenties Tom began to think seriously about opening a gym. He had worked out at Black’s Health World at 120th and Lorain Avenue and had seen world class strength athletes, professional sports figures, and average people alike benefit from a “hard core” motivational environment. After Black’s closed, Tom tried several of the major new fitness chains, but none of them completely fit his personal requirements for a fitness lifestyle. He knew if he were patient, an opportunity would come his way to open a facility of his own and run it in accordance with his vision of what a gym should be. Tom’s opportunity came in March of 2008 when he took over Pro Fitness at 16602 Lorain Avenue. This at long last put him in the business of fitness and gave him a chance to evolve his dream. “I knew what turned me off at some of the big chains. I vowed I would not engage in strong arm sales tactics,” Tom stated. “I wanted to run my gym by the Golden Rule and treat my members as I would want to be treated myself.” Equally important, Tom wanted to present a “hard core” gym experience that everyone could relate to. He knew from personal experience how successful Iron Asylum owner Tom Slomka with staff members AFAA Certified Trainer Kandy Ridinger, Meghan McCarthy, Sarah Ochall, and Jerry Beck. • 6,000 square feet upstairs & downstairs packed with tons of free weights, Hammer Strength, and Cardio Equipment. • Mono-Lift and Reverse Hyper racks for power-lifters. • Certified Personal Training available on staff. • Two tanning bed rooms. • Men and women’s locker room with showers. • Cooler stocked with pre and post workout beverages. • Iron Asylum apparel including T-shirts and hoodies. 14 Iron Asylum concept originator and artist Jerry Beck silk screens apparel on site at the Iron Asylum. One of the things that really bothered Tom about the big chains was their payment and collection policies. “Some facilities today actually require you to pay with an ATM card on file and you must authorize automatic debits,” Tom relates. “And heaven help you when you want to stop the deductions. It can be quite inconvenient.” At Iron Asylum you can pay by the visit, monthly, quarterly, biannually, or annually. Family, senior, and student special rates are available. Rates start at $25 per month and major credit cards are accepted. Though you can arrange to pay by automated debit, there are no contracts and you can stop payments at any time. “We are not about sales people trying to up-sell you or tying you in to a restrictive contract.” Tom emphasizes. Tom realizes some people may have misinterpreted one of their slogans – “There is no place for the weak here.”– or the “hard core” image they portray. “It’s actually a bit ironic, because this is THE place for the weak,” says Tom. “Our intent was to convey that anyone – men and women, the young and the old, beginner and advanced lifters – can become stronger and more fit here. And we have great cardio, too. The whole idea of a no frills, hard core gym is to motivate and surround our members with success and enthusiasm rather than confusing electronic devices and sales hype.” A great selection of equipment, motivation, and a very welcoming, supportive environment are exactly what you will find at the Iron Asylum! A well-designed Social Media campaign should be the cornerstone of advertising for every business today. From Internet-based outlets to brick and mortar storefronts, effective Social Media marketing drives traffic. You can reach millions of people with your product or service offer. “But for many small business owners, the idea of learning how to use Social Media Marketing is overwhelming,” says Bobbie. According to statistics, Facebook alone grew to 300 million active users already this year. Their fastest growing demographic is those 35 years and older. And 50% of their active users log on any given day. Social Media Marketing, done correctly, has the ability to propel a once unknown company into global awareness within a short amount of time. Right Hand Right Click, LLC, a West Park Virtual Assistant Company, is offering classes to teach entrepreneurs and small business owners how to unlock the code and unleash the power of Social Media Marketing. In a two-hour class, business owners can learn the basics of the three major social networking sites. “Before you know it, you will be thinking in terms of ‘content rich key word profiles’, strategizing social media activities to define your brand, and using quality content to build a stronger customer base.” “Social media is taking off like a rocket. Businesses need to hop on board or prepared to be left behind,” says Bobbie. Call now for information about the next class. Contact Bobbie Beach of Right Hand Right Click at 216-941-0941. They both are new businesses occupying the former Goodwill store in Downtown Kamm’s Corners. Future Kids Day Care Activity Center, at 16940 Lorain Avenue, and Payless Furniture, at 16950 Lorain Avenue, have brought the long vacant building back to life. The City of Cleveland Storefront Renovation Program (SRP) provided design assistance and a 40% rebate up to a maximum of $3,000 for tenant signage and awnings for each business. Tim Barrett, Design Specialist with the SRP, designed the unique signage for the businesses. In addition, a new storefront entrance was installed for the furniture store. Missing storefront windows and bulkhead tiles were restored to match the colors and pattern of the original design, and the building received a fresh coat of paint. The day care signage is shown in two sections. Different colored letters spelling Future Kids were painted across a yellow awning with lines to represent tablet paper, while Day Care Activity Center is shown on a chalk board below, including a piece of chalk. The two wedges projecting from the building were transformed into a box of crayons and a box of chalk, with different colors of crayons and chalk extending out of the box tops. The Payless Furniture sign was designed in layers to add depth and shadows. Burgundy squares and rectangles were attached to the charcoal sign panel. Then gold letters outlined in black were pin mounted to project beyond the squares and rectangles. Future Kids Day Care Activity Center opened on October 1st, and already has an enrollment of 70 children. The 9,150 square foot facility is divided into large, colorful rooms for different age groups. “Our goal is to provide quality, loving care for children in a clean, creative, and safe environment,” said owner Jamila Jabr. “We treat the children like they are our own, and we want them to feel at home. We’ve received many positive comments from parents about the center and the professional teachers.” Certified day care teachers speaking English, Spanish, and Arabic provide care for children ages six weeks to fourteen years, including special needs children. Teachers direct activities for each age group including fine motor skills, story time, games, music, and art. Also, reading, writing, math, Spanish, and computer instruction is available. The day care van, painted with the colorful signage, transports children to and from school. And, teachers provide homework assistance after school. 23 “We love our sign,” said Jamila. “It’s not like any other sign, and our center is very visible. People stop by all the time and take pictures. We are happy to be in Downtown Kamm’s Corners, and couldn’t have found a better location.” Future Kids Day Care Activity Center is open 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and provides breakfast, lunch, and a snack. For enrollment information please visit futurekidsdaycare.com or call 216941-5990. Payless Furniture offers a variety of furniture styles from traditional to contemporary at competitive prices. The furniture is displayed in room settings throughout the 3,000 square foot showroom, including living room, dining room, kitchen, and bedroom. “Customers like our prices and styles of furniture,” said owner Bachar Seoud. “They’re happy to have a furniture store open in the neighborhood again.” The store includes a selection of home furnishings such as floor and table lamps, area rugs, and LCD flat screen TV’s. Also, custom-made drapery service and installation is available with a selection of Italian fabrics. “All the improvements with the street and buildings are encouraging for new businesses, and present a safe image,” said Bachar. “We’re happy to be a new business in Downtown Kamm’s Corners.” Payless Furniture offers free delivery in the Kamm’s Corners neighborhood, and a 10% discount to firefighters and police officers. Visit the store from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Please call 216-251-9300 for more information and sale updates. KCDC congratulates Future Kids Day Care Activity Center and Payless Furniture on their outstanding renovation, and for bringing a long vacant building back to life. Welcome to Downtown Kamm’s Corners! For more information about the Storefront Renovation Program, please contact Cindy Janis at [email protected] or call 216-252-6559 ext. 1200. West Park Discovery World Makes A Child’s Day Bright …by Marilyn Osborne When children are asked, “What did you do today?” the most common reply is, “Nothing.” That’s because boiling all activities down to one response is hard for kids (and even grown ups) to do. What a child may want to say is, “My day was filled with activity. I learned about dinosaurs. I played on the swings. I made pretend reindeer food with oatmeal and glitter. I ate all my lunch, and I fell right to sleep at nap time.” To keep parents informed and foster meaningful conversations, every child in the full day program at West Park Discovery World goes home at the end of each day with a summary sheet reporting what he or she did, including general mood, what was eaten, what the theme of the day covered, and anything of special note the teachers feel a mom or dad might want to know. Owners/Administrators Nora Litchney (left) and Gayle Kovach also teach at West Park Discovery World to stay engaged and active in the educational field. “Parents are starved for such information,” said Gayle Kovach, coowner and co-founder. She graduated from the University of Toledo with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. Her prior experiences have been in teaching and directing Kindergarten, Montessori, and preschool classes. Nora Litchney, her business partner, earned an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Bachelors Degree in Social Science from Baldwin Wallace. Since 1978, Nora has been teaching and Teresa Pofok’s second child is now in Kindergarten there. Discovery World offers an enriched full day Kindergarten program taught by an experienced, licensed, master degreed professional. She said, “I use the daily report to talk with my son. For example, when I saw they were studying dinosaurs, I asked him about it. Then, I took him to the Museum of A young trio discovers muscles in the oversized book, Natural History so he “How Your Body Works.” could see the dinosaur directing preschool programs, and bones.” Knowing what they are doing is presently an Adjunct Professor at in day care allows her to participate Cuyahoga Community College. in his education in a real way. The program familiarizes the children with all the musical instruments and music theory. Nichole Griwatch’s 5-year old daughter Alivia has been attending Discovery World for three years. “I like the year-round education my daughter receives and the small class sizes. Teachers know the children well – and they make a point to know the parents, too. I feel comfortable calling the school for advice about Alivia – she’s my only child and I welcome their experience and knowledge.” Mrs. Griwatch said she is happy with her daughter’s progress. “Alivia is doing addition and subtraction already. She’s very bright, and with my working schedule, she would not be where she is if not for Discovery World.” In addition to the accolades above, all the parents mentioned the special activities that include parental involvement such as Dads & Donuts Day in March, where the children bring their dads or other male relative for a donut breakfast and arts & crafts on a Saturday morning. “My husband and son made a handprint wall hook last time, and that’s where my husband now hangs his hat,” said Mrs. Kemer. Monthly newsletters announce events planned by the staff and parent volunteers. And, at each class’s entranceway, the day’s activities are posted, including songs to be sung, books to be read, snacks to be served, and the theme of the day, which are aligned to Ohio’s Early Learning Content Standards. “High quality preschool has always been a top goal, which is why we pursued and achieved our 3 Star Rating and our National Accreditation,” said Nora. All the lead teachers at Discovery World have advanced degrees in education. Most have been with the school for many years and have seen many little graduation ceremonies as their pupils moved on to excel in primary school and beyond. Fairview Hospital Pain Management: Helping You Turn Your Back on Pain It might be a sudden, sharp pain that strikes without warning, or it could be a nagging pain that increases over time. Either way, you aren’t alone. Back pain affects 80 percent of us at some point during our lives, according to the National Institutes of Health. If pain limits your activity in any way, the first step in pain management is to see your doctor, says Adel Zakari, MD, interventional pain management specialist at Fairview Hospital. “If back pain is severe, therapies like medication and physical therapy may not adequately control the pain,” says Dr. Zakari. “Combining interventional therapies with physical therapy and medications tends to have the best results.” Interventional therapy is tailored to the patient’s needs and can include the following: • Trigger point injections aid in the treatment of pain resulting from muscle spasm or strain. • Epidural steroid injections help control the pain originating from spinal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spinal canal, disc pain and pain resulting from nerve compromise (neuropathic pain). Joint injections help control arthritis pain, including injections for the facet joints (small joints in the lower back), and the sacroiliac joint, which connects the tail bone to the hip bone. In addition to these interventions, radiofrequency ablation can be used for long-term pain control. In this procedure, an electrical current produced by a radio wave heats the nerve tissue and disrupts its ability to send the pain signals. This safe procedure is only targeted toward the pain transmitting nerves. For patients with severe chronic pain, especially those with complex regional pain syndrome (reflex sympathetic dystrophy or RSD), or pain persisting after spine surgery, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) may be an option. SCS is a two-phase process, Dr. Zakari says, the first of which is a trial. During this simple, outpatient procedure, a fine wire is inserted next to the spinal cord without making any incisions. The wire is connected to an external device transmitting electrical pulses to the spinal cord, blocking pain signal transmission. 25 “If during this test phase, the patient feels the therapy is improving his or her quality of life, we move to the second phase,” Dr. Zakari says. The second phase is a minor surgical procedure, where the physician implants the device, which resembles a pacemaker, and the leads into the body. The best therapy will vary by patient, Dr. Zakari explains. “Every patient is different,” he says. “We start with the simplest therapy and work to find the best treatment possible.” If you’d like more information on how the Pain Management Center at Fairview Hospital can help you, call 216.476.7331 or visit www.fairviewhospital.org/painrelief. Well written article on the Setta Trophy business and family by Marilyn Osborne. I thought you might like to have a story of my experience with these nice folks. I came back from Iraq in 2006 after serving with the US Army. My soldiers presented me with a statuette as we were re-deploying back to the USA, but didn’t have the time to get it engraved. So I brought the statuette and plaque to Setta Trophy and asked if they could engrave the plaque and mount it. I believe I dealt with Scott. I returned to pick up the statuette a few days later and was very happy with the work. Scott bagged the item and gave it to me. I asked what the charge was and he said “You’ve paid enough, we can’t charge you anything.” Many family members and friends welcomed me back to the USA, but that was the “welcome home” I’ll remember most many years from now. The Setta family doesn’t know me and didn’t sell me anything and couldn’t make a profit from me, but were as kind and considerate as if I was a family member. Please ask your readers to bring them any and all of their business. They’re the genuine article: warm, caring people. Not a big-box chain store! And say thanks from me, again! your Snow Removal!
