in association with 01 Welcome Two old classmates and familiar faces welcome Riverfest 2006 Welcome to historic Limerick, and to Ireland's newest international festival, in our oldest city on our greatest river. This May Bank holiday Limerick will throw the biggest party in Ireland - Riverfest, a celebration of the beautiful river Shannon and the city to which it gave birth. Like every great city we have our famous sons and daughters who have brought us pride and international fame - Richard Harris and Terry Wogan, Kate O'Brien and Ada Rehan, Bill Whelan and Michael Hogan, Francis Condell and Catherine Hayes. We also have those we'd rather forget. The voice of this year's Riverfest is an old school friend of mine, the comedian Karl Spain. While we can't say for sure into which category Karl falls, he is an immensely funny man and I'm delighted he has given his time and his talent into promoting this festival and his native city. Congratulations also to the City Centre Coordination office and Eightball Promotions for putting together an impressive programme of events. I'm looking forward to the party - though not to the slagging I'm sure to get from Karl. Cllr. Diarmuid Scully Mayor of Limerick and Admiral of the Shannon I'm really looking forward to this year's Riverfest. I think it's great that Limerick has a festival in which we can showcase our city in a positive light. We have a lot to offer here and its about time people knew about it. There's a hell of a lot going on so get out and support it. There's no doubt there's something for everyone. I'm hoping that seeing you all bungee jumping, barbequing, speaking French at the market and trying to make sense of the street entertainment will give me some great material for my next show. There might even be a piece about the Mayor in there! You'll hear all about yourself in May! See ya there. The event will involve an entertainment extravaganza, which will run over a four-day period in UCH, consisting of a two-hour variety show each night and also a nostalgic exhibition of the memorabilia associated with the history of Limerick tops. Limerick enjoyed huge success in Tops competitions over the years. Limerick was well represented at both community and corporate level. We will be remembering names such as Insurance’s, City Traders, Banks, CIE, ESB, Post Office, Teachers, Roches Stores, Analog and the Crescent Shopping Centre, not to mention a number of other factories who competed and many of whom successfully participated in the national stages. Tops enabled a tremendous number of people to experience for themselves the creativity and the enjoyment of being involved in live entertainment. It was one of the most popular and successful annual events in Ireland. In the Limerick region, the support for Tops and the demand for tickets was so great that one could only equate it to the mammoth task of acquiring a ticket for a Munster Heineken Cup game at Thomond Park! This piece of Irish history and culture is brought back to life in Limerick by a committee of dedicated people, some of who have been involved in Tops down through the years and others who are involved in driving the performing arts within the community in Limerick. So come and take in the sights and sounds of Tops Odyssey when this phenomenon comes back to Limerick audiences.
