New Jersey Bi-annual license renewal comes up this October so if you need additional CE this is a convenient way
to fulfill your requirements.
The February 20th issue of Time magazine has a fascinating article on medical billing titled “Bitter Pill: Why
Medical Bills Are Killing Us” by Steven Brill. In what may well be the longest magazine article ever published, the
perverse system of hospital billing in the US is examined in painful detail. I highly recommend that you take the
time to read it. You will discover that many non-profit hospital corporations make huge profits, and that the CEOs
and CFOs and other administrators of these organizations are paid millions of dollars in compensation annually.
Who knew! Then there is the magic of the ‘Chargemaster’ computer that sets prices for everything, apparently
without any regard what so ever for actual costs. Wouldn’t you like to have one of those? Unfortunately some of
your patients may think that you do. Here is why I think that reading this article is important; in the minds of many
people dentistry is just another part of the overall health care mess. We need to be able to set the record straight
when patients question the price of care. If you can’t provide answers then who will?
The gravy train doesn’t stop with the hospital corporations; it extends to some vendors and equipment suppliers
who have discovered that there are no limits on marking up prices to a captive audience. Unfortunately many of
these vendors also market supplies and materials to dentistry. Recently I pulled out a supply company catalog and
I was thumbing through it when I realized it was about five years old. When I took a look at the current edition I
was shocked to see how much prices had gone up. The past five years have been a period of extremely low inflation
yet the prices of some dental materials have gone through the roof. Why is that? Perhaps the medical pricing model
has infiltrated dental products?
The ADA has tracked dental practice incomes for several decades. During previous economic downturns dental
practice incomes went flat and began to increase once the economy recovered. This is the first time that practice
incomes have actually declined during a recession but I’m sure you didn’t need me to tell you that.

It is paramount for all dentists to have some understanding on how to diagnose and treat the most common dental
injuries, especially the emergency phase of the treatment. This is because for most injuries, the time from injury to
