GreenTech 2016
On behalf of RAI Amsterdam, I am delighted to personally welcome
you to the second edition of GreenTech Amsterdam. In three days,
you and thousands of other visitors from all over the world, will
see the products, technologies and trends that are shaping the
horticulture industry.
GreenTech is a sparkling new gem in the RAI Amsterdam’s portfolio
of international trade shows. The decision to organize and invest
in this event has proven to be a right choice as it has grown 30%
compared to the first edition: this year we present over 400
exhibitors with all leading manufacturers present.
Pavilions surrounding the themes Water, Energy, Biobased and the
newly added Crops include a theater with free to attend sessions,
demonstrations and workshops. All selected and approved by an
expert committee to ensure your time is well spend. The programme
is listed in this catalogue and the App.

The GreenTech Innovation Award is an important feature of
GreenTech. As organisers we are committed to encourage,
recognize, and reward innovation. The InnovationLAB will present
live displays, presentations and demonstrations from the successful
finalists. With all this in mind, GreenTech is the place to be for faceto-face networking, gaining knowledge and product innovation.
I am extremely proud that last April we launched the GreenTech
Online Community. The Community is a networking and information
hub developed exclusively for horticulture professionals and stakeholders. An online meeting point where members can create, share
and comment on valuable content that addresses top-of-mind
subjects. I invite and encourage you to become a member and enjoy
the opportunity to interact with your fellow professionals online.
The second week of June a trip to the Netherlands is more than
justified by the amount and importance of events organised on
horticulture. We hope you take the opportunity to combine your
visit to GreenTech with a visit to a few of the many greenhouses that
open their doors this week.
The success of GreenTech is the result of the combined efforts
of many people. In particular, I would like to thank the Exhibition
Committee, our stakeholders, and partners AVAG, Fedecom,
Hortialliance, CHA, Agragex, AVF and official mediapartner Hortibiz
for their valuable advice and input. Last but certainly not least, a
heartfelt thank you to our exhibitors and visitors.

organizing team all set for the event?

Yes, we are up and running to welcome our horticulture visitors
and exhibitors from all around the globe, here in Amsterdam, the Netherlands!
Good to hear!
I understood there will be numerous theme pavilions at GreenTech and sharing knowledge will be
an important aspect during this fair. Why is that so important?
We are living in a world where is an overload of information available.
It is our aim and passion to bring a relevant
focus
to all these data. The interest of the growers and investors are leading in this. We focus on the proven and
newest technologies for sustainably growing crops. Both flowers and vegetables.
We share knowledge,
trends/developments through an extensive presentation programme based on 4 sustainable themes: Water, Energy,
Biobased and Crops(optimization). And via dedicated pavilions, demonstrations, the InnovationLAB and innovation
route.
Sounds promising! As official media partner of Greentech we have been working closely with the organizing team in
recent months. I especially found the enthusiasm of everyone to be very contagious. Were you able to make the
industry excited as well?
I wholeheartedly
hope so. And we will continue with that when all Dutch and international horticulture experts
arrive at the show. All participants, 380 from 30 countries, and the GreenTech/RAI Amsterdam team are fully prepared
to engage and inspire our guests to the max! At the show itself of course, and don’t forget what our great capital
Amsterdam has to offer.

Awards 2016
Innovation and excellence will be rewarded when the winners of the 2016 GreenTech
Innovation Awards will be announced! An international jury has scrutinized 73 potential
candidates and after careful analysis and intense consideration has shortlisted 15 final
entries. GreenTech’s awards are presented in three categories – production, equipment and
automation solutions. One of these three winners is chosen as the overall winner of the 2016
GreenTech Innovation Award. The Awards are presented on June 14 during the opening
ceremony of GreenTech 2016. All nominees are on display in the InnovationLAB in Hall 8.

RootmaXX by Saint-Gobain Cultilene (The Netherlands)
–Stand 11.623
Cultilene RootmaXX is a new stone wool cube. The total
quantity of roots is between 5% and 25% higher than in
current cubes. Within the cube the root development is
even, giving better control over plant balance. RootmaXX
is produced on the basis of (X-fibre) technology, a patented
technology by the Saint-Gobain Group. Thanks to this
technology, the fibres go in all directions in the substrate.
ISO Cutting and Planting robot 1800 by ISO Group
(The Netherlands) – Stand 09.307
The ISO Cutting and Planting robot 1800 is able to analyze
the geometry of a stem of a pot rose with the MARVIN 3D
camera program. The pot rose branches, which are hung into
the machine, are detected and analyzed by 8 camera’s, cut
on the right stem length and directly planted into a pot in one
movement by a Denso robot arm.
ISO Plantsampler by ISO group (The Netherlands) –
Stand 09.307
The ISO Plantsampler automates the gathering of DNA
material. In the germination process it is crucial to know the
DNA profile of new varieties. Till now DNA material has been
gathered by manually taking leave-samples of a plant and
analyze these with DNA sequencers. The ISO Plantsampler
automates this process by taking samples from a leave of a
seedling and gather these on a microplate.

The GrowCoon is a 100%
biodegradable culture
plug , made from 100%
biodegradable polymer. It
can be produced in every
desired size. Conical shapes
are also possible. The
GrowCoon can be placed
into the tray before it is
filled with substrate. It keeps
the root ball together after
it is filled with substrate.
This allows the plant to be
transferred without any
pollution and damaging the
roots.
Biospreader by Royal Brinkman (The Netherlands) –
Stand 11.108
The Biospreader is excellent for the floriculture. The
patented high-tech spreading disc in the Biospreader is
the heart of this innovation. The disc provides a uniform
distribution of predatory mites and is designed in a way
that the quality of the predatory mites remains maximal
retained. Predatory mites, once in the crop, will get to
work to control pests.

Triton by Van der Ende Groep
The Triton Bioreactor produces a healthy microbiological
population. The sophisticated water treatment results in
a clean irrigation system and enables an oxygen rich root
environment with microbiological biodiversity. This results
in more resilient crops and helps control root diseases such
as crazy roots. Ultimately, the Triton will contribute to an
improvement of the crop production.
The Triton is a bioreactor with an advanced regulating system
and a clever use of air, water and a compiled living space
providing an optimal habitat for a healthy microbiological
population. This population becomes residential in the Triton,
which means that the microflora will feel ‘at home’. This
residential microflora will take care of any organic pollution
by consuming it. The water after the treatment in the Triton
contains more oxygen, less organic pollutants and an amount
of healthy microflora.

2SaveEnergy greenhouse covering by 2SaveEnergy
2SaveEnergy is a new, practical and economical solution
for energy-efficient growers. This greenhouse covering
contains an outer layer of clear glass with a double antireflective coating and an under layer of diffuse F-CLEAN
film between which there is a ventilation cavity. This is the
first greenhouse covering that combines a high insulation
value and light transmission with an affordable price.

NUF water recycling by NUFiltration Ltd. (Israel) – Stand

NUF water recycling technology for greenhouses based
on the patented NUF™ membranes purification process.
Recycling of irrigation water stream free of pathogens, viruses
and microbiological agents without use of chemicals, thermal
or biological treatments. The recycled stream still contains
the same concentration of fertilizers, micronutrients and salts
which are disposed by the system.
ValkScreenVision screen insertion system by Van der
Valk Horti Systems (The Netherlands) – Stand 11.124
The ValkScreenVision screen insertion system saves time
when inserting or replacing screen cloths and is less risky for
both crop and installer. As the screen cloth is inserted directly
into the profile, there is no need to use clips. As a result
hardly any work is required amongst the crop nor at great
heights. As well as being quick, clean and safe, the system is
also flexible.
Priva Deleafing Robot by Priva (The Netherlands) –
Stand 08.226, 08.420 and 11.120
Together with a large group of tomato growers Priva has
developed a robot, which removes leaves from tomato
plants completely independently and in an economically

Paskal Growth Analyser by Paskal Technologies Ltd.
(Israel) – Stand 11.118
The Paskal Growth Analyser (PGA) is a wireless weighting
System that monitors the daily growth of the Plant. The
wireless sensors are located in the greenhouse and the
plants are hanged to the sensors. Every 20 minutes the
systems measures the weight of the plant. This information
together with the climate date from the climate computer is
analyzed and processed within the Paskal System (Online).
HortiMaX-Go! by Ridder Hortimax Group (The
Netherlands) – Stand 11.210
The HortiMaX-Go! is the all-new Smart Greenhouse
Controller. It is a modern, user-friendly and affordable
horticultural computer for controlling both greenhouse
climate and irrigation. It can be easily customized choosing
unique ‘Smart Switches’ that can be installed in a plugand-play manner. Every grower in the world now has the
opportunity to start his automation smart.

C.H.I.M.P by Phenokey (The Netherlands) – Stand
09.212
C.H.I.M.P (Crop Health & Information Monitoring Platform)
measures control and plant health parameters objectively and
location specific with different sensors. Unique feature is that
C.H.I.M.P measures these parameters autonomously over
the entire area of the greenhouse. The data is converted into
smart performance indicators. These indicators are used for
remote monitoring and decision support.
Connected Screening by Hoogendoorn Growth
Management & Svensson (The Netherlands) – Stand

The Connected Screening module connects the specific
Hoogendoorn iSii process computer software with the
wide range of Svensson climate screens to allow full control
over humidity transfer, light transmission and energy
savings. Knowledge exchange and innovation are the
results of this unique cooperation that provides growers
all benefits of ‘the next generation growing’ (fully closed
screens).

The GreenTech Innovation Route highlights innovations in
horticulture sector. Stands included in the Innovation Route
can be distinguished by a floor sticker in front of the stand.
InnovationLAB
The InnovationLAB consists of several different areas:
Experience and Social Hub
As the name suggests, this part of the InnovationLAB is all
about giving show visitors the chance to experience the
technology of the future in real live demonstrations. It is the
“science center” of Greentech where you can see, feel, taste
and experience upcoming technology solutions that are still
at the research or testing phase. This is a great way to gain a
sneak preview of what the future has in store.
Newsroom
The NEWSROOM features live interviews recorded and
edited live by RAI film crews and shown on the large AV
screen in the InnovationLAB.
Startup Lane
The Startup Lane which offers start-ups and young
professionals an interactive platform in order to bring their
innovative ideas to the market or to new find business
partners. At the Greentech InnovationLAB we offer Startups
and show visitors the unique opportunity to get into contact
with each other in the InnovationLAB Startup Lane specifically
designed for them. Next to being able to interact with the
startups the visitor can also visit the live Startups pitches.

Innovation and
international
collaboration to
feed the world
The demand for food will substantially increase in
the next few decades. Higher number of people and
increasing wealth in major parts of the world will lead
to a doubling of the global demand for especially
high-quality proteins such as vegetables, dairy and
meat. The available land and resources will not
double, so we need to produce more per hectare, per
animal and per unit of natural resources, such as water.
When being productive and efficient, food is also
produced with the lowest amount of greenhouse gas
emissions. An additional advantage is that as much
land as possible is saved for nature conservation and
biodiversity.

Promising smart technologies that can help realizing
increased productivity and efficiency include
precision farming and genomics. Precision farming
is making maximum use of tools such as sensors,
robotics and any other new technology that the IT
area will bring. Genomics is the knowledge of which
genes do what, and allows us to improve and speed
up breeding for e.g. disease resistance and water use.
We are only at the eve of these developments. They
will bring unprecedented improvements in the food
production system, making it possible to produce
more food with fewer raw materials and less emission.
‘More with Less’ so to speak.
Greenhouse horticulture is a frontrunner in
productivity and efficiency and well positioned to
adopt and apply such new technologies. No single
country is able to produce food for the entire world.
That is why countries with a high-productive agri &
food sector not only aim at exporting products, but
also at disseminating knowledge and technology. For
that, an international fair such as GreenTech offers an
excellent opportunity.

Four themes
at GreenTech
Four major themes play an essential role at GreenTech: Water, Energy, Biobased and Crops. These
are challenges the world faces and horticulture can play a crucial role by providing sustainable
solutions. Three theatres are appointed at the exhibition for extensive knowledge exchange and
networking: the Water/Biobased theatre, Hall 9, the Energy Theatre in Hall 11 and the Crops
Theatre in Hall 8.
Why water?
The major challenges are water scarcity, saline
soils and growing water demand. On top of
that water is essential for food security in the
world. In the pavilion you find information about
solutions such as information management, soil
improvement, innovative crop concepts and
technology regarding collection, transport, reuse, storage, water
treatment and irrigation systems.

Why energy?
Fossil energy sources are
becoming increasingly scarce.
This urges the improvement
of energy efficiency, increased
usage of sustainable energy
sources and a smarter use of
fossil energy. At the pavilion you find information
about (semi) closed greenhouses, LED lighting,
next generation growing, the usage of sustainable
energy sources like biomass, geothermal and solar
or cogeneration and last but not least (installation)
renewal in existing greenhouses.
Why bio-based?
Lowering our carbon footprint
requires development
of circular systems and
expansion into new markets
and applications. Horticulture
plays a crucial intermediate
role between plant related raw materials and for
example the pharmaceutical or chemical industry.
At the pavilion you find information about different
solutions such as biomass or pyrolysis heating,
new chemicals and materials applications, food
& feed ingredients or new pharmaceuticals and
nutraceuticals.
Why crops?
To achieve high yielding crop
production, maximize efficiency
and profitability, an optimum
environment is required.
Environmental circumstances
vary greatly around the world.
Different regions have different climates, different
types of soil, different scarcity of production input
along with many other variable factors. Crop
optimization is crucial to the success of a grower’s
crop production.

Breeders Pavilion
GreenTech Tours
The Breeders Pavilion offers a unique opportunity to
see the newest varieties of flowers and vegetables
side by side. The Pavilion is located in an actual
greenhouse, covering no less than 300 square meters.
In cooperation with 7 participants of the Flower Trials
and Vegetable Tour, visitors of the show enjoy a preview
of the greenhouses of breeders in the country using
3D and virtual reality technology. The 300 square
meter greenhouse is constructed and fully equipped
by Hogervorst Tabben, a specialist in building and
demolishing greenhouses and supplying complete
greenhouses. Participants include Anthura, Bayer Crop
Science, Van den Bos Flowerbulbs, Eminent Seeds,
Hilverda Kooij, Schoneveld Breeding and Sion.
This GreenTech it is possible to visit the live show cases
of two renown vegetable breeders as well as some of
the biggest flower and bedding plant breeders in the
world. GreenTech organises all-inclusive bus tours to
these companies where you can talk to specialists and
experience the latest innovations in bedding plants,
flowers and vegetables. All tours will depart from the
GreenTech exhibition and will be guided by a hostess.
After you visited the companies of your choice (approx.
1,5 hours site time) you will be brought back to RAI
Amsterdam. Price €75,- ex VAT (guided transport by bus,

be at the intersection of biology and technology.’ These
legendary words, spoken just before Mr. Steve Jobs
passed away, have inspired the start of Jungle Talks,
webinars about horticultural topics, organized from
Costa Rica, aiming at professionals around the globe.
GreenTech, Jungle Talks and HortiBiz joined forces in
organizing ‘Jungle Talks Live’ during the GreenTech.
Live interviews with horticultural decision makers and
trendsetters on a variety of topics. These live interviews
are also webinars, so even when you are not in the
Netherlands, you can experience ‘innovation where it
starts’.

GreenTech 2016
Everything revolves around crop optimization; in scientific research and with technological companies, for
developers active in mechanisation, at breeders and chemical plants and last but not least at the horticultural
production companies. On all levels cultivation conditions are being improved. Crops Theatre, the beating
heart of the GreenTech 2016 edition puts the spotlight on this central and globally important theme.
For three days, the Crops Theatre, with its stage, large
screen and seating capacity of 80 people, is the centre
of everything related to crop optimization. At the
Theatre, international experts will give introductions
and presentations. The program is extensive and
diverse and includes the latest developments in
GreenTech 2016

the field of biological crop protection,
use of diffuse glass, screens and LED
lighting as well as growing media such
as substrate, potting soil and vertical
farming. ‘Everything you can think of to
optimize the production of your crop you
will find here,’ says Mariska Dreschler,
Manager of GreenTech. ‘There is so much
information and knowledge available
which comes together during these three
days at the theatre,’ according to an
enthusiastic Dreschler. Together with nine
internationally renowned Crops partners
who are supporting the theatre, we
compiled a high-quality program.
Sjaak Bakker, business unit manager of
Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture
and member of the session committee,
was involved in defining the lectures for
the overall program of the Crops Theatre.
The main challenge was
to find the right balance
between the various
themes and monitoring
the content quality of
the sessions. The result
is a well balanced mix of
lecturers from knowledge
institutes and the industry.
The presentations will
be interesting for a wide
audience and refer to
high-tech innovations of
course, but also pay special attention to
mid-tech solutions. These solutions cater
better to the options and opportunities
of foreign visitors. ‘Many cultivation
areas are not ready yet for high tech
solutions. Simple adjustments in the field
of production systems, the introduction
of biological crop protection, of substrate
or fertigation, will already make a great
difference,’ says Bakker.
‘There will be great sessions, like the kickoff on the first day of the fair by Meiny
Prins and Rob Baan, claiming that the
Netherlands is the healthiest and most
sustainable ‘delta’ in the world’, shares
Mariska Dreschler. ‘The Netherlands has
made great steps forward in the field
of water and energy reduction. Meiny
Prins and Rob Baan are frontrunners
and what they do is innovative and
future proof.’ ‘Vertical farming is another
current development that is very cool’,
says Dreschler. ‘A new way of sustainable
cultivation in a closed environment, that
can possibly contribute to the world
food supply.’ Certhon is also part of the

partner ties in closely with the goals
of the Crops Theatre. The company
carries out complete projects in the
field of greenhouse construction and
technical installations all over the world
and also incorporates agronomic and
cultivation advice. ‘We notice there is
an increasing demand, worldwide, for
Dutch horticultural knowledge,’ says John
Lagerwerf. ‘Dutch companies are perfect
advisors when it comes to varieties and
systems. We focus on cultivation and
the client’s market, not on our product,’
says Lagerwerf. To emphasize this,
the company abandoned its turnkey
approach and changed it to ROI-key,
return on investment. What strikes him
in the organization of the Crops Theatre
is the solidarity and collegiality among
the partners, which is also necessary in
international horticulture. ‘When we build
a nice project abroad, we usually work
together with Dutch partners in the field
of horticultural technology.’
Unique approach
The Crops Theatre offers a
comprehensive knowledge program
consisting of many presentations and
lectures on one specific theme and this
makes GreenTech 2016 unique when
compared with other fairs. ‘We closely
cooperate with international market
leaders in order to combine knowledge
and experience and highlight them
during seminars. All technology needed
to cultivate crops is put in the spotlight.
The themes of the 2014 edition, water,
energy and biobased, we have expanded
with Crops. We are focusing more on
content, with specific themes that matter
to growers. In this respect, the expert
committee that compiled the program
succeeded in broadening and deepening
the above mentioned themes.
The attention for less developed
production regions
distinguish this GreenTech
from the previous edition,
thinks Sjaak Bakker. He sees
opportunities to develop
greenhouse cultivation
systems in other countries
with different climates by
using Dutch technology.
‘We possess the
knowledge and technology
to help others. Nowadays
there is more attention for
this aspect and notion.’
Heart
Growers reacted positively to the extra
theme. Crop optimization is closely
related to the grower’s everyday practice.
‘Thinking as the plant, that is what a
grower does. And then you come really
close to the heart, of the grower as well as
the crop,’ says Dreschler. This approach
is innovative when compared to our 2014
edition, because back then the focus was
on cost reduction and sustainability.

Let the sun shine
for Australian
tomatoes
Sundrop Farms has locations in Adelaide, Port Augusta (both Australia), London and Dubai. The
company developed a revolutionary concept to produce crops in areas that have traditionally been
unsuitable for agriculture. The Sundrop System is therefor quite different to most conventional
greenhouses.
Sundrop Farms doesn’t rely on fossil fuels
and freshwater resources. Instead the
company relies primarily on electricity
from the sun, collected by 15 hectares of
solar mirrors. From this source seawater
has been transformed into freshwater.
The heating and cooling system to
control the greenhouse climate has been
powered by sun energy as well. “What
you have seen in Australia is not only
problems due to drought, but you’ve
also had these hundred-year weather
events happening almost every two or
three years. And then suddenly retailers
would find themselves without tomatoes
on their shelves, or incredibly high-priced
tomatoes”, says Philipp Saumweber.
and producing more than 17,000 tonnes
of tomatoes annually using solar power,
seawater and natural pest management.
Sundrop Farms has already partnered
with Coles, the leading supermarket
chain in Australia. “And what we are
able to offer is quality and consistency
year-round to a supermarket at a stable
fixed price because we are no longer
subjected to the vagaries of fossil fuel
pricing or water availability. We see lots
of opportunities across the globe. Some
regions like the Middle East for example
have abundant energy, but also a real
water and food scarcity and security
problem.”
Sustainable
Agriculture uses around 70% of the
world’s natural freshwater supplies. With
a growing world population and a fast
increasing demand for food, the 21st
century has to be about sustainable
expansion to conserve resources. “And
so, we find that the Sundrop System
adapts and works very well across
different regions and not just in our
traditional crops of tomatoes, peppers
and cucumbers.”
Stable fixed price
In 2016, Sundrop Farms will open its
first fully operational state-of-the-art
greenhouse facility in Port Augusta, South
Australia. The site will include four 5 ha
controlled greenhouses, a desalination
plant and solar field comprising of a 115
metre high tower and more than 23,000
mirrors reflecting the sun’s energy. The 20
ha site will be the first of its kind globally,
employing approximately 175 people

Linked tunnel
very suitable for
growing soft fruit
In strawberry production the cultivation area with tunnels is increasing, partly because growers are not
always allowed to build greenhouses due to permit restrictions such as maximum construction height.
The linked 4 meter tunnel is the grower’s favourite. It is easier to control the climate in these tunnels in
comparison to rain shelters and there are more options to automate, when it comes to cultivation and
care.
The interest to grow strawberries in tunnels is
steadily increasing. When using tunnels it is for
instance feasible to achieve two consecutive
cultivation cycles. In reality, growers prefer to use
the linked 4 meter tunnel. When linked, these
tunnels possess a better ventilation capacity than
in a tunnel of 8 meters wide.

work with linked tunnels. Greenhouse
construction was not allowed in their
region, therefore the choice for the
linked tunnels was an easy one. Mark
van Aert, from the village of Zundert,
also chose to construct a linked tunnel,
because he wanted ‘to move fast’ and
greenhouse construction would take
too long.

Keep your options open
Mark van Aert in the village of Zundert
is growing his crop in a linked tunnel
for the first time this year. He chose
Meteor Systems’ linked tunnel and
like HeGe, chose the 4 meter bays
with three rows of plants per bay. By
using the linked tunnel he can advance
the first production and harvest a
few weeks before the open rack
cultivation. In autumn he can extend
his production somewhat by closing all
ventilation.
He also chose to use high cultivation
gutters, because he wants to maintain
flexible. Production in meter troughs
he wants to eventually
change to a direct

want to keep that
option open. Maybe
there’ll be a suitable

Van Aert starts production with an A+
plant. At the end of the production
period the plant is being removed from
the trough and he continues with a
mini tray plant.

Promising
future for plant
compounds
The horticultural sector is looking for new ways to keep on making money. The production and trading
of plant compounds is very promising in this respect. Because each tomato, rose or pot plant contains
thousands of compounds that might be useful for the pharmaceutical or food industries. And that might
be the basis for a whole new chain.
Everyone who works in horticulture knows about it:
the tomato packaging that is partly manufactured
of tomato fibres. A great example of the biobased
economy, or in other words: plant ingredients replace
fossil raw materials as resource for pharmaceutics,
food supplements, cosmetics, pesticides, animal feed

and fuels. Below the surface there are
more of such examples. An increasing
number of growers sells plant compounds
and it is likely that in the future, the
Dutch horticultural sector will become an
important producer of plant compounds.
To make such a future a reality, various
parties started working together. Bio
Based Greenport Westland-Oostland
is now involved in various projects –
among which the packaging enriched
with fibres of cleared tomato plants
and the development of green plant
protection products – and the socalled Entrepreneurial Platform for
Plant Compounds was established. Jan
Smits (Bio Base GreenportWO): ‘Plant
compounds have a great future.’

be used in treating tumours, diabetes and
obesity. The juice in the stems of tomato

‘To ensure a healthy future, the
horticultural sector needs to look for new
earning capacity’, says Jolanda Heistek,
program manager Greenport WestlandOostland (GreenportWO). Increasing
international competition is the cause of
this search: other countries are more often
very capable to grow quality vegetables,
flowers or fruit. A new earning capacity
may sound abstract, but can be very
obvious and concrete. The
marketing of special plant
compounds for instance,
or: the ingredients of plant
products. Each fruit and each
crop consists of thousands
compounds that might be
useful for other purposes.
But which crops contains
which compounds for which
solution? To answer that question the
Centre of Expertise for Plant Compounds
started the extract library. Extracts were
made of 1300 different plant varieties, in
addition the Centre collected available
literature regarding functionality and
plant compounds present in these crops.
Interested companies can screen the
extracts to check if they contain desired
characteristics or specific molecules.

their substances and the residual flows

substances. The horticultural sector has

is a great starting point to search for
other applications, like the development
of the packaging material containing
fibres of tomato plants. That has only
been the beginning though. Bio Based
GreenportWO now cooperates with the
Centre of Expertise for Plant Compounds
and Koppert Biological Systems in
developing green crop protection
products which are based on organic
residues. Waste is what remains and
therefore each Euro you can earn with it
is very welcome of course. But the plants
themselves – such as tomatoes and roses
– can also contain useful compounds.
These plants need to be cultivated
especially in order to extract these useful
compounds. And that is a whole different
ballgame, says Steef Meewisse. Since a
few years, the Dutch rose grower from
the village of Bleiswijk supplies specially
cultivated plants to a pharmaceutical
company for medicinal applications. He
cannot say which plants he cultivates or
which plant compounds the company is
after, because his client does not want
to disclose this information. Meewisse
can say however, that marketing plant
compounds is different, very different.
‘You really have to keep in mind what the
demand is. Not: I have got a plant. But:
what does the world need? And how can
I contribute to this by doing what I can
do well, namely growing plants? That is a
very different way of thinking.’

The buyers of plant
compounds are very
different companies than
horticultural sellers are
currently used to. These customer do not
for instance request a MPS certificate, but
an extensive risk analysis. Customers that
do not want you to mention who they are,
because of the competitive market they
are active in. And customers that operate
in completely different markets. Donkers:
‘selling flowers is way easier than selling
plant compounds, because that is pretty
complex.’

‘Efficiency is
key in solving
water issues’
All over the world water is becoming scarce, but this resource is still essential when it comes to growing
plants and food production. It is therefore important we use water efficiently. But how do you use water
wisely when it is scarce or when you only have access to salt water? In order to answer these and other
questions, water and everything that has to do with it, will extensively being discussed during the GreenTech.
Water, together with crop, sustainable production
and energy, is one of the main themes during the
GreenTech. Water scarcity and the necessity of
efficient irrigation are the central subjects, because
these issues cause significant problems worldwide.

GreenTech, indicates that the fair shows
best practices and striking innovation
in the field of water(reduction). ‘It is
fascinating to see that entrepreneurs
have so much knowledge regarding their
product or solution. These are passionate
specialists who really know what they
are doing. It is really cool to be part of
that…..’
During the fair, a large number of
informative and inspiring presentations
and seminars on the subject of water
are being organized in a special
theatre. Examples are the production
of a healthier crop with less water or the
application of a good quality irrigation
water that serves as a basis for optimum
fertigation. Thijs van der Meulen, product
manager of the GreenTech,
explains that the focus of
the knowledge programs
lies on water efficiency.
At the fair many solutions
are offered in the field
of water storage, water
recycling, salt to fresh
water conversion (reverse
osmosis) and irrigation
systems that add just
enough water to the
plant. ‘These technologies
are very interesting and
relevant for growers all over
the world. Efficiency is the
solution to many water issues.’
Research centres
Jouke Campen, international project
manager at Wageningen UR, is an expert
on these issues. He is project leader at
a number of large water projects in the
Middle East and set up research centres
in Saudi Arabia and the VAE together
with local partners. He investigates
via the ‘adaptive greenhouse design’
which greenhouse design exactly is
the most water efficient and can be
used in sustainable food production.
Campen shares that in the VAE a closed
greenhouse system has been designed
in which, by recycling all water, the
amount of water needed is reduced to
a minimum. ‘The recycling takes place
by using two different methods; by
transferring the evaporation water via
condensation back to the plant and by
cultivation in gutters, so that excess
amounts of water can be recycled.
‘In many regions in the
world there is no or not
sufficient water available’
Normally you need 200 liters to
produce one kg of tomatoes, but with
this experiment in Abu Dhabi we only
needed 4 liters!’
During the GreenTech, Wageningen UR
will showcase projects like these and
hopes they will attract the attention of
other counties. ‘At the moment we are
also working in Australia and Qatar and
Mexico are interested. There’s quite some
enthusiasm indeed.’
Underground water storage
There are more companies at the
GreenTech however that offer innovative
solutions to solve (inter)national water
issue. Codema Systems Group in
Bergschenhoek - a company which
offers products and solutions in the
field of water, climate and energy – that
informs visitors on the possibilities
of underground water storage. Their
specific method the company has
recently developed together with
research centre KWR. Gideon de Jager,
commercial director, explains that
rainwater can be stored in a conditioned
way by underground storage. ‘In the
Netherlands storage in water basins
works reasonably well, but in countries
with a warmer climate a lot of water
evaporates and in addition, algal growth
causes problems. We therefore thought
of a solution by creating a kind of water
reservoir between two sand layers in the
soil. ‘Until now, we used this technology
mostly in the Netherlands. But during
the GreenTech we hope to meet foreign
companies that have to deal with a water
shortage or cannot store it efficiently or
in a conditioned way and therefore are
interested in our technology.’ De Jager
knows that sustainable
use of water and water
reduction are hot items
for investors. ‘Especially
because in many regions in
the world there is no or not
sufficient water available.
And don’t forget that 70%
of all our fresh water – 2,5%
of all available water in the
world – is used to irrigate
open fields. In due course
this irrigation method
needs to be replaced by
tailor made solutions.’
According to De Jager, desalination of
water in an economically viable way could
be the answer to the world’s increasing
need for fresh water. In this respect he
mentions Sundrop Farms in Australia,
a project where Codema together with
Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects
uses solar energy to desalinate sea water.
‘The particular method we use to do this
is unique and promising with regards to
future projects!’

Horticulture is booming. The world population
and its average age are increasing and the general
standard of living is improving, this results in a fast
growing demand for high value crops. Horticultural
production can be regarded as the absolute top of
the food production pyramid worldwide. Regardless
the continent, country or region, protected
horticulture is always aims to produce high value/
quality crops and acts as a benchmark towards local
agro/horticultural products.
Although protected horticultural production forms
only a small part of the total food production
and therefore does not contribute significantly to
the world’s food security problem, this particular
production does take pole position when it comes to
nutritional security (vitamins, minerals).
Leading horticultural production companies are
using flexible designed production systems that
fit local needs when it comes to the environment,
society and economy.

Optimal root distribution in the substrate is very important to get the best yield and quality. Cultilene has
developed the Cultilene Framework to improve the way growers can manage their substrate with so called
Smart Root Zone Management.
The Cultilene Framework is a system that helps
growers to get the best out of Cultilene substrates
and out of their crops. The Cultilene Framework
highlights the critical periods during the growth
and development of the crop. For each of these
critical periods the Cultilene Application managers
have suggested target settings for the different
parameters, important for your root zone control.
Substrate calculator
Good crop management and Smart Root Zone

Management (SRM) starts with good
design of the substrate system; the basics
must be correct. Therefore Cultilene
developed a ‘substrate calculator’. With
this calculator the grower can calculate
the slab layout and plant and extra head
densities, the volume of substrate per
square meter, the dimensions of the
substrate, spacing between the slabs,
etc. There is also a check on performance
of the drip irrigation system. “You
need to be sure that you can supply
enough of water and nutrients under all
circumstances What adjustments have to
be made?”, Harding explains. “Cultilene
also helps to calculate the correct dose
size using a DSF or Dose Size Factor
which relates the dose size to the volume
of substrate that each dripper supplies.”
Knowledge and data
The next step is to set the
targets and strategy for the
growing season, taking into
account what happened
last year. In this way the
consultants of Cultilene can
help the grower and his
crop consultant.
Cultilene also has
developed measurement
protocols, which help a
grower to check if the
values in the substrate
are in line with the target
levels. “It is important that growers
know exactly what is going on in the root
zone. Using the substrate is becoming

“Steering plant balance using water
content and ec is a very valuable tool
which can be used more not only to help
produce high yields and quality but also
to help protect root health during periods
of poor light or plant stress”
The next step is to set
the targets and strategy
for the growing season
Measurement protocols
Cultilene has developed three different
protocols for measuring slabs using a
hand held meter. A standard protocol
that provides quick and simple insight
into the water content and EC of a slab,
a more advanced protocol which can be
used to reveal more detailed information
and a Deluxe measurement, which
provides highly detailed information.
The last measurement is usually carried
out by growing advisors or Cultilene’s
advisors to show the water and ec
distribution in the slab as a profile. By
standardizing the way of measuring,
according to Harding the measurements
can be taken by technician’s and the data
presented to the grower to help him in
the decision making on strategy. “The
data collected also gives a good insight
into the developments during growing
and can be viewed again in the future.

of origin and job title.
The grower can use the conclusions and
insight to optimize the growing strategy
and water in a more targeted way, in
order to achieve the target moisture and
nutrient levels.”

Around fifty growers are
now using the principles of
the Cultilene Framework
and this group is growing
steadily. Harding believes
the results are promising.
“Growers who use the
Cultilene Framework
principles on our substrates
have better control of the
root zone – it’s really Smart
Root Zone Management!
- , the differences in
moisture and nutrient
values between and in the
slabs is reduced. There is also better root
distribution and oxygen supply, which
is particularly important during critical
growing periods. Working according to
this Framework principles helps to further
optimize the use of Cultilene stone-wool
slabs, from the very beginning to the end
of the crop.”
