Cincinnati overcame an early 3-0 deficit and rolled to a 27-10 lead after three quarters. Cincinnati’s marquee offensive stars each had outstanding games. QB Carson Palmer posted a 107.5 passer rating, tops in the AFC for the opening weekend. HB Rudi Johnson rushed for 126 yards, second-most in team history for a season opener. And WR Chad Johnson caught 9 passes for 91 yards, tying for the AFC opening-weekend lead in receptions. Second-year CB Keiwan Ratliff and rookie MLB Odell Thurman had interceptions for Cincinnati, and Ratliff recovered a Browns fumble forced by DT John Thornton. The Bengals were plus-1 in turnover differential, moving to 10-1 under head coach Marvin Lewis in games with a positive differential. The Bengals tied the team record with a plus-6 turnover differential (7 takeaways, 1 giveaway) and rolled to a 27-0 halftime lead in dismantling the Vikings. The Bengals intercepted 5 Daunte Culpepper passes, their most INTs in a game since 1976, and CB Deltha O’Neal had 3 of those, tying the team record. Carson Palmer passed for 266 yards in the first half alone for Cincinnati, and he finished with 337 yards, his secondhighest career total. Palmer threw a 70-yard TD pass to Chad Johnson on the second scrimmage play of the game, and his 12-yard TD pass to T.J. Houshmandzadeh gave the Bengals a 14-0 lead with 7:19 still left in the first quarter. The Vikings fell behind 37-0 before averting a shutout with 3:17 to play on a Culpepper TD run and a two-point conversion. The Bengals improved to 2-0 and the Vikings fell to 0-2. 17 7 10 0 0 3 — — 27 13 SCORE TEAM-SCORING PLAY QTR-LEFT V-H Cle. - P.Dawson 29 field goal ........................................................1-4:37 .........0-3 Cin. - R.Johnson 1 run (S.Graham kick) .....................................2-13:44 .........7-3 Cin. - S.Graham 32 field goal........................................................2-8:46 .......10-3 Cle. - F.Jackson 68 pass from T.Dilfer (P.Dawson kick)................2-5:03 .....10-10 Cin. - K.Walter 20 pass from C.Palmer (S.Graham kick)..............2-0:45 .....17-10 Cin. - J.Johnson 18 pass from C.Palmer (S.Graham kick) ..........3-9:48 .....24-10 Cin. - S.Graham 23 field goal........................................................3-8:24 .....27-10 Cle. - P.Dawson 34 field goal ........................................................4-9:48 .....27-13 Att Yds 26 126 5 11 1 11 32 148 BENGALS C.Palmer TOTALS PASSING Att Cmp Yds TD-I BROWNS 34 26 280 2-1 T.Dilfer 34 26 280 2-1 TOTALS Lg TD 24 0 6 0 3 0 24 0 Att Cmp Yds TD-I 43 26 278 1-2 43 26 278 1-2 No Yds Lg TD 8 128 68t 1 5 65 19 0 4 16 8 0 3 32 20 0 3 22 13 0 2 16 9 0 1 -1 -1 0 26 278 68t 1 8 37 SCORE TEAM-SCORING PLAY QTR-LEFT V-H Cin. - C.Johnson 70 pass from C.Palmer (S.Graham kick)........1-14:08 .........0-7 Cin. - T.Houshmandzadeh 12 pass from C.Palmer (S.Graham kick) ...1-7:19........0-14 Cin. - S.Graham 40 field goal........................................................2-5:02 .......0-17 Cin. - S.Graham 29 field goal........................................................2-3:19 .......0-20 Cin. - M.Schobel 8 pass from C.Palmer .......................................2-0:12 .......0-27 Cin. - T.Houshmandzadeh 16 run (S.Graham kick) ......................3-2:06 .......0-34 Cin. - S.Graham 30 field goal........................................................4-5:41 .......0-37 Min.- D.Culpepper 5 run (D.Culpepper to M.Robinson pass) .....4-3:17 .......8-37 Missed FG: None. They had 5 interceptions for the second straight game in their victory over the Bears, and they had 6 total takeaways after getting 7 the previous week. The Bengals went three-and-out on their first possession against a tough Chicago defense, but LB Brian Simmons’ interception on Chicago’s first scrimmage play put Cincinnati on a roll. The Bengals punctured a generally tough Chicago defense for 3 Carson Palmer TD passes, 2 to Chad Johnson. The Bears offense, meanwhile, penetrated the Cincinnati red zone only once on the day and had a long scrimmage gain of 23 yards. Palmer posted a 130.3 passer rating, hitting triple figures for the his sixth straight start, dating back to the 2004 season. The Bengals logged their first 3-0 start since their AFC Central Division title season of 1990, and the Bears fell to 1-2. After winning each of their first three games by 14 or more points, the Bengals came up against a stubborn foe in winless Houston and managed to get the job done in the clutch. The Texans had a first down at the Cincinnati 44 early in the fourth quarter, with the scored tied 10-10, but sacks by rookie LBs Odell Thurman and David Pollack forced Houston to punt from its own 25. The Cincinnati offense responded with a 13-play drive that resulted in a 27-yard Shayne Graham field goal, and on the next Texans possession, Bengals DE Justin Smith executed a sack-and-strip on QB David Carr, with DT John Thornton recovering the fumble at the Houston 35. When Graham kicked a 46-yard field goal for a 16-10 Bengals lead, only 1:10 remained to play and Houston was out of timeouts. The Texans advanced only as far as their own 40-yard line on their final possession before Carr was sacked again on a fourth-down play as time ran out — Cincinnati’s seventh sack of the game. The Bengals improved to 4-0 for the first time since their Super Bowl season of 1988, and the Texans fell to 0-3. The score tied the game at 17-17, and the Bengals scored 2 fourth-quarter TDs while limiting the Titans to 2 field goals. Bengals QB Carson Palmer tied an NFL record by posting his ninth straight game with a 100-plus passer rating, and Palmer’s 15-yard TD pass to WR Chad Johnson put Cincinnati ahead to stay at 24-20 with 4:19 remaining. James forced a Chris Brown fumble later in the final period, and his 26-yard return to the Titans’ 1 set up a TD by HB Rudi Johnson. The Bengals had a plus-3 advantage in turnover differential and improved their NFL-leading differential to plus-16. Cincinnati went to 5-1 on the season, winning for only the second time in seven trips to Tennessee. The Titans fell to 2-4 on the season. Cincinnati pulled within 23-20 with 5:16 to play on a 25-yard TD pass from QB Carson Palmer to WR Chris Henry, and later the Bengals had a chance to drive for a go-ahead TD or tying field goal. But with just over a minute to play, Palmer lost a fumble to a blind-side Jaguars pass rush at the Jacksonville 45. The Jaguars beat the Bengals at Jacksonville for a seventh straight time, led by RB Fred Taylor’s 132 rushing yards. The Bengals fell to 4-1 on the season, while the Jaguars improved to 3-2. ROSTERS Sunday night, Oct. 9, at ALLTEL Stadium — 149 — 2005 Season Review.indd 149 7/18/2006 2:10:57 PM STAFF ROSTERS VETERANS 2006 DRAFT CHOICES COLLEGE FREE AGENTS 2005 REVIEW HISTORY RECORDS Game 7 Steelers 27, Bengals 13 Sunday, Oct. 30, at Paul Brown Stadium Before a franchise-record home crowd of 66,104, the Bengals misfired on a chance to take a 2½-game lead in the AFC North Division, and also to match their best seven-game start in team history. They fell 27-13 to the visiting Steelers, falling to 5-2 on the year while Pittsburgh climbed to within a half-game at 4-2. The Bengals drove to the Pittsburgh 12 on their first possession, but came away without points, and they netted only a field goal after driving to the Steelers’ 8 on their second possession. Pittsburgh made Cincinnati pay for the missed opportunities, moving to leads of 7-6 at halftime and 24-6 after three quarters. The Steelers rumbled for 221 rushing yards, 131 by Willie Parker, and QB Ben Roethlisberger threw a pair of TD passes. Bengals QB Carson Palmer scored the lone Cincinnati TD on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter. Palmer entered the game with an NFL-record-tying streak of nine straight games with a passer rating of 100 or more, but he was held to a 53.8 rating in the loss. The Bengals picked off 5 Brett Favre passes, the most ever suffered by the Packers QB legend in a regular-season game, and Cincinnati ran its record to 6-2, the best at the halfway point of a season since a 7-1 mark in the Super Bowl season of 1988. The Bengals also became the first NFL team since 1970 to get 5 INTs in three different games in a season. Despite a plus-4 turnover differential, the Bengals didn’t have an easy road to victory. Though they went up 21-7 on Carson Palmer’s third TD pass of the day, a 27-yarder to FB Jeremi Johnson with 13:17 to play, Favre drove the Packers 88 yards for a TD that narrowed the gap to 21-14 with 3:11 remaining. Following a Bengals punt, Favre led Green Bay to a first down at the Bengals’ 28 with 23 seconds remaining, but the Bengals rose up on the final two snaps to end the threat as time ran out. The Packers fell to 1-6 on the year as the Bengals posted the franchise’s first win in four games against Favre. Cincinnati scored TDs on each of its three penetrations of the Baltimore 20-yard line, and on four Baltimore trips inside the Cincinnati 20, the Bengals defense gave up only three FGs and no TDs. The Ravens pulled within five points at 14-9 early in the fourth quarter, but the Cincinnati offense responded with a 12-play, 91-yard TD drive to put the game away. The drive finished with a 3-yard TD pass from Carson Palmer to rookie WR Chris Henry. Palmer posted a 128.4 passer rating, topping the 100 mark for the 11th time in his last 12 games. Bengals HB Rudi Johnson rushed for 97 yards and scored the first Cincinnati TD on a 1-yard run in the second quarter. The Cincinnati defense yielded only 240 net yards as the Ravens fell to 2-6 on the year. Cincinnati rallied from a 35-17 deficit to close within 35-34 early in the third quarter. In the end, however, the Bengals were not quite a match for the NFL’s only unbeaten team. The Colts led 42-34 with 4:29 left in the third. And when the Bengals countered with a drive to the Colts’ 27, Indy’s defense got off the field by stuffing a fourth-and-one sweep by Cincinnati HB Chris Perry. The game featured standout performances by QBs Carson Palmer and Peyton Manning, and the day ended with Palmer and Manning ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the NFL in season passer rating. Bengals WR Chad Johnson had a career-high 189 receiving yards. The Colts led 35-27 at halftime, and the 62 total points were tied for second-most ever in an NFL first half, as well as the most first-half points ever in a Bengals game. The Colts’ 35 first-half points tied the most ever against Cincinnati. As the Colts rose to 10-0, the Bengals fell to 7-3. Cincinnati posted a three-game winning streak against the Ravens for the first time in series history. After rolling to a 34-0 lead with 6:18 left in the third quarter, the Bengals saw Baltimore strike for three TDs in quick succession. Jamal Lewis’ 5-yard scoring run left the Bengals leading by just 13 (34-21) with 11:58 still left in the fourth quarter. But the Cincinnati offense killed half of that remaining time with a 61-yard TD drive, as Rudi Johnson’s second TD run of the day gave the Bengals a comfortable 42-21 edge with 6:03 remaining. For the first time since Dec. 5, 1999, the Bengals finished a game with a 300-yard passer (Carson Palmer, 302), a 100-yard rusher (Rudi Johnson, 114) and a 100-yard receiver (T.J. Houshmandzadeh, 147). The Bengals improved to 8-3, while Baltimore fell to 3-8. The Bengals outgunned the Steelers to claim their most significant victory since their last playoff appearance in 1990. The victory over the defending AFC North champions gave Cincinnati a two-game division lead with four games to play, plus a tiebreaker edge based on division record. The Bengals withstood a 474-yard Steelers offensive output, countering with 4 takeaways and a giveaway-free 324 yards of their own. The 324-yard total did not include a 94-yard kickoff return by Cincinnati’s Tab Perry, which set up the first of Rudi Johnson’s 2 rushing TDs for a 31-24 Bengals lead in the third quarter. The Bengals moved to a 38-24 lead in the fourth quarter when Johnson scored to climax a 49-yard drive set up by an Odell Thurman INT. The Steelers closed to 38-31 and gained possession at their own 24-yard line with 2:26 to play, but the Bengals defense stopped Pittsburgh without a first down, getting sacks by David Pollack and Justin Smith. The Bengals improved to 9-3 on the season as the Steelers fell to 7-5. Special teams standout Tab Perry set up a Bengals field goal by forcing and recovering an R.W. McQuarters fumble on the game’s opening kickoff, and Cincinnati went on to lead 17-0 after the first quarter. Carson Palmer threw 3 TD passes for Cincinnati, setting a team record with 30 for the year, and Chad Johnson caught a career-high 11 passes. Rudi Johnson rushed for a pair of Cincinnati TDs, and CB Deltha O’Neal got his 10th interception, setting a new club season record. The Bengals improved to 11-3, clinching the AFC North title, and Detroit fell to 4-10. Cincinnati took its first lead at 20-17 with two seconds remaining in the third quarter, on a 4-yard TD pass from Carson Palmer to WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh. The TD play converted a third-and-goal situation. The Browns tied the score at 20-20 on Phil Dawson’s 29-yard field goal with 4:19 to play, but the Bengals consumed the final 4:19 of the game on a 12-play drive that ended with Graham’s game-winning kick. Graham was 3-for-3 in field goals for the game. Cincinnati’s defense yielded a season-low 208 net yards, and HB Rudi Johnson accounted for most of Cincinnati’s 278-yard total with a season-high 169 rushing yards and 11 more on 3 receptions. Johnson scored his team-leading 10th TD of the year on an 8-yard run in the first quarter. The Bengals improved to 10-3 on the season, tying the best 13-game record in club history. ROSTERS Sunday, Dec. 11, at Paul Brown Stadium — 153 — 2005 Season Review.indd 153 7/18/2006 2:10:59 PM STAFF ROSTERS VETERANS 2006 DRAFT CHOICES COLLEGE FREE AGENTS 2005 REVIEW HISTORY Game 15 Bills 37, Bengals 27 Sunday, Jan. 1, at Arrowhead Stadium Needing a win to stay in contention for the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs, the Bengals absorbed what head coach Marvin Lewis called a “thoroughly disappointing” loss, falling to a 4-10 Bills team that had lost five straight. It was Cincinnati’s eighth straight loss against the Bills. Buffalo’s highly-regarded special teams contributed a 99-yard kickoff return for a TD by Terrence McGee, an onside kick recovery, and a 19.0-yard average on two punt returns. McGee also had a 46-yard INT return for a score, becoming the first player in NFL history to score on a KOR and an INT in the same game. The Bengals tied the score at 27-27 on Shayne Graham’s 27-yard field goal with 7:27 to play, but the Bills drove to a go-ahead FG with 0:58 left, and McGee made his INT for a TD as the Bengals tried to mount a comeback in the final minute. Attendance at Paul Brown Stadium was 65,485, and the Bengals set a new regular season attendance mark of 526,469. The Bengals fell to 11-4; the Bills improved to 5-10. The Bengals entered the regular-season finale with only their playoff seeding at stake and, despite the loss to the Chiefs, Cincinnati still came away as the No. 3 seed in the AFC. Injured starters Levi Jones and Deltha O’Neal were inactive for the game and many other Bengals starters, including QB Carson Palmer, saw only limited playing time. The Bengals’ only score came on a 49-yard field goal by Shayne Graham late in the first quarter — his 14th consecutive FG, a new team record. HB Rudi Johnson managed only 18 rushing yards, but that was enough to give him 1458 for the season and break the team record he set in 2004 (1454). The Bengals had just 161 yards of total offense, while Kansas City racked up 537 yards, the most yards allowed by Cincinnati all season. RB Larry Johnson rushed for 201 yards and 3 TDs for the Chiefs, who were playing their last game under head coach Dick Vermeil. The Bengals ended the regular season with an 11-5 record, while Kansas City finished 10-6. But Cincinnati was dealt a devastating blow on its second offensive play, as QB Carson Palmer was lost to a serious knee injury while completing his first NFL postseason pass — a club postseasonrecord 66 yarder to WR Chris Henry. Backup QB Jon Kitna took over for Palmer and helped Cincinnati fashion a 17-14 halftime lead, but Pittsburgh owned the second half. The Bengals’ offense, deflated without Palmer, had just 6 first downs and 105 net yards in the final two periods and failed to score another point. The Steelers used a botched snap on a Bengals FG attempt and two INTs by Kitna to control the second half and claim the first-ever postseason meeting between the longtime divisional rivals. Pittsburgh, which had finished second to the Bengals in the AFC North and entered the playoffs as the No. 6-seeded Wild Card team, went on to win Super Bowl XL. The three previous coaches who have taken the Bengals to the playoffs all either went to the postseason or won 10 games during their third years at the helm: • Paul Brown’s third Bengals season was 1970, the team’s first in the NFL after the NFL-AFL merger. The team captured the initial AFC Central Division title with an 8-6 record. The Bengals won their last seven games after a 1-6 start and became at the time the youngest expansion franchise ever to reach the playoffs. • Forrest Gregg’s third season was 1982. His Bengals finished 7-2 in a strike-shortened season, tying for the second-best record in the AFC. Divisional standings were not used in ’82, and the team entered the playoffs as the AFC’s third seed among eight qualifiers. • Sam Wyche’s third season was 1986, and though the team did not make the playoffs, it finished 10-6, a record that in most years is good enough to punch a playoff ticket. Wyche’s club finished two games behind 12-4 Cleveland in the AFC Central. Four non-division winners finished with 10-6 records, and tiebreakers sent the N.Y. Jets and Kansas City to the playoffs while the Bengals and Seattle missed out. Wyche later took the Bengals to the playoffs twice, in 1988 and ’90. — 155 — 2005 Season Review.indd 155 7/18/2006 2:11:00 PM STAFF ROSTERS VETERANS 2006 DRAFT CHOICES COLLEGE FREE AGENTS 2005 REVIEW HISTORY RECORDS STADIUM , NFL & MEDIA BENGALS 2005 PARTICIPATION CHART Cin.
