WELCOME
2015 NOTABLE RESEARCH AND
PATIENT CARE BREAKTHROUGHS
Dear Friends,
As we move toward a new year, I would like
to offer my deepest appreciation for your
continued involvement with Jimmy Fund Golf.
In 2015, your efforts on and off the golf course
helped Jimmy Fund Golf raise vital funds for
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Thanks to your support and dedication, Dana-Farber
was able to achieve the following breakthroughs:
■ FDA fast-tracking and approval of an experimental
drug for non-small cell lung cancer that achieved 95
percent disease control in clinical trials
Thanks to your support, Dana-Farber is able to maintain a singular focus
on conquering cancer with an equal commitment to both research
and patient care. This 50/50 balance results in an extraordinary level
of collaboration and partnership between our laboratory scientists,
clinicians, and patients, and is essential for making the most progress
against cancer in the shortest amount of time.
■ Launching a groundbreaking genetic test
In 2015, Dana-Farber opened chemistry, biology, and drug development
labs in the state-of-the-art Longwood Center. This space allows our
best and brightest researchers to work together on understanding
the biology of cancer and bringing novel cancer-fighting agents from
the laboratory bench to the patient bedside. All of this would not be
possible without your continued support.
this link has been shown in a large population—as well
As you may know, I will be retiring in 2016 as president and CEO of
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Looking back over my 16 years at DanaFarber, I am delighted by how much Jimmy Fund Golf has grown, from
raising $2.8 million in my first year to $6.8 million in 2015. I am confident
the next 16 years will be just as fruitful for this important program and,
as a result, for Dana-Farber.
Now is a time of great promise for cancer science, and I know that with
your continued commitment, Dana-Farber will remain at the forefront
of the field. On behalf of Dana-Farber’s patients and their families,
thank you for your continued commitment to conquering cancer with
Jimmy Fund Golf.
to speed treatment decisions and improve targeting
of treatments in blood cancers
■ Discovering that high levels of vitamin D can
help protect against colorectal cancer—the first time
as improve survival time for patients with the disease
■ Creating a web-based, animated video series
on oral chemotherapy to educate patients and their
families about the benefits and risks of this type of
cancer treatment
■ Demonstrating that statin drugs can delay
progression of prostate cancer by a median of
10 months if initiated at the start of androgen therapy
■ Achieving reduced recurrence of disease in
women with small, HER2-positive breast tumors
using a lower-intensity combination therapy that
limits negative side effects
Sincerely,
Edward J. Benz Jr., MD

LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY. HELP CONQUER CANCER.
The Dana-Farber Society (DFS) is a group of more than 900 special donors who have established
a legacy to help conquer cancer by making a gift to Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund in their estate
plans. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015, DFS began with just 90 forward-thinking individuals.
The essential support from DFS gifts allows the Institute to accomplish more for its patients and their
families while planning for the future. Members can create a legacy through bequests, charitable gift
annuities, retirement plan assets, life insurance plans, gifts of real estate, and other gift arrangements. Join DFS today with
a planned gift that provides benefits to you and helps saves lives. For more information on Dana-Farber’s planned giving
opportunities and the Dana-Farber Society, contact Alice Tobin Zaff, Assistant Vice President, Gift Planning, at 800-535-5577
