Members of the Rotary Fall River Interact Club have been busy
with projects for the Inter-Mountain Fair that begins Thursday.
Included in the club’s tasks were
an entry in the fair’s Create a Cow
competition and painting trash
cans for the fairgrounds. Top photos shows Madison Hamilton and
Antonio Iniguez. Photo above has
Darcy Coulter putting the finishing
touches on the Create a Cow entry. At right, Robee Knoch stands
next to one of the trash cans the
group decorated. It’s evident club
members also did a little decorating of their faces while completing
the projects.

SETI in
scramble
to verify
deep
space
sound
All 42 dishes of the
Allen Telescope Array
at the Hat Creek radio
observatory were pointed
Sunday night at a distant
star, some 95 light years
away, following the revelation of a sound blip
heard by a Russian radio
telescope.
Reports of the signal
were first published Saturday on the website
Centauri Dreams, a site
for aficionados of deep
space exploration.
The unusual signal
was originally detected
on May 15, 2015, by the
Russian Academy of Science-operated RATAN600 radio telescope in
Zelenchukskaya, Russia,
but was kept secret from
the international community.
An international team
of scientists from the
Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is
investigating the mysterious signal spikes emitting
from the 6.3-billion-yearold star in the constellation Hercules — 95 light
years away from Earth.
Paul Gilster broke the
story after the researchers quietly circulated a
paper announcing the
detection of “a strong
signal in the direction of
HD164595.”
The star’s designation of HD164595 is considered to be sun-like in
nature with a nearly identical metallic composition
to our own star.
So far, a single Neptune-like (but warmer)
planet has been discovered in its orbit and there
could be other planets
within its solar system.
Fall River Brewing Company wins big at 2 competitions
Bronze medal awarded for Kilty Pleasure Scotch Ale in competition among 5,000 beer entries
Fall River Brewing Company
tied for third place in the Scottish Ale category during the U.S.
Open Beer Championships with
their Kilty Pleasure Scotch Ale.
The bronze medal was
awarded to Fall River Brewing
along with Oskar Blues Brewery
(Colorado) – who tied for third
place with their beer, Old Chub.
The Kilty Pleasure Scotch Ale
was one of 5,000 beer entries in
the contest. The U.S. Open Beer
Championships is one of the
largest beer competitions in the
United States with entries being
accepted by commercial breweries, home brewers, and college
breweries.
This summer, Fall River Brew-
ing also won the gold medal (first
place) at the California State Fair
Commercial Beer Competition in
the Porter category with their Pittville Porter beating out 39 other
entries in that category.
These wins add to the growing list of recognitions including
two medals from the Best of Craft
Beer Awards for their Abbott’s
Reserve Bourbon Barrel-Aged
Barley Wine and Widowmaker
Double IPA.
“We are pleased that our beer
has done so well in these competitions,” said founder John
Hutchings.

Fall River Brewing Company pioneered the IPA
market in the area.
Known for their Hexagenia IPA and Widowmaker
Double IPA, Hutchings
said, “Our Hexagenia IPA
is definitely a crowd favorite and makes up the bulk
of our production. In 2015,
we produced 2,670 barrels

expect to brew over 1,000
barrels more.”
Part of the reason for
that increase in production,
he said, is due to Hexagenia IPA being available in
cans. Fall River Brewing
will be producing 16-ounce
cans of their Hexagenia
IPA. They will be available
in four packs or singles
depending on how a retailer
prefers to sell the product.

Shasta Rail Trail
reaches milestone
Great Shasta Rail Trail
ownership changed August
18, marking a milestone in
the trail’s seven year development. Title transferred
from Shasta Land Trust to
the Great Shasta Rail Trail
Association.
“Eighty miles of property
makes for a complicated
real estate transaction,”
said acting SLT Executive
Director Debra Townsend,
“but the effort was wellrewarded with the comple-
tion of SLT’s contribution
toward the development of
this important recreation
facility.”
A California Transportation Commission $350,000
grant funded the original
trail acquisition. An additional $300,000 from private
donations and governmental grants funded the environmental site assessment,
property title research,
hazard waste clean-up, and
engineering surveys.

The Fall River Bulldogs will
host the Burney Raiders tonight
for the midweek Fair Bowl.
The Bulldogs are looking to
bounce back after a season
opening loss to the East Nicolaus
Spartans. Fall River struggled in
the opener, falling 36-7. Coach
Rick Neugebauer believes the
team will quickly focus on their
inter-district rivals coming to the
McArthur field.
“I think it will be pretty easy to
keep the kids focused and motivated this week,” said Neugebauer. “We have a real good
chance to get our season going
with a win.”
The Raiders are coming off
a road win over the Etna Lions,
34-19, but coach Clint McCurg
doesn’t put any stock in last
week’s games.
“Fall River always find a way to
dot their I’s and cross their T’s and
put a good football team together,”
he said. “I’m kind of glad we’re
playing on a short week. No time
to think about our last game.”
The junior varsity teams will
kickoff at 5:30 pm, varsity 7:30.

The contrasting Cardinals
found a lot answers in their areal

Virginia City grabbed the lead
near the two-minute mark, then
sealed the deal with a pick-6 with
just 1:23 remaining and held on
for the 12-point victory.
The Muckers only threw the
ball eight times for 59 yards. But
they featured a rushing attack that
tallied 354 yards on 60 carries.
VC junior Evan Breckenridge
listed 6-1 220 lbs carried the ball

New season, new beginning.
The Burney High football team
entered the season hoping to put
its stamp on the Raider gridiron
reputation. The squad opened the
season Friday with a trip to Etna
and inked the pad, defeating the
host Lions, 34-19.
Burney coach Clint McClurg
said the Raiders did a good job
controlling the line of scrimmage
and just out played their opponent.
The Raiders looked to impose
its will defensively and held the
Lions to just one touchdown
through three quarters of play.
Burney sported a 34-7 lead in
the fourth quarter. Etna burned
the Raider secondary for the final
two scores of the game, but never
really threatened the lead.
“We still have a lot of work to
do,” said McClurg. “But the kids
did a great job, beating a pretty
good Etna team.”
It’s been more than a long
time since Burney won a football
season opener. However, coach
Clint McClurg said it was more
about this team’s commitment to
getting better.
“It’s a nice way to start the
season,” he said, but it’s only one
win. I think it’s more about the
quality of kids on this team. They
want to be physical and be as
good of a football team as they
can be.
“We just need to focus on getting better, staying healthy and
trying to win another football
game.”
The Raiders featured two 100yard rushers in a thunder and lighting kind of fashion. Running back
Alejandro Jimenez (El Caballo)
had 30 carries for 112 yards and
two touchdowns. Marvin Jackson
chewed up yardage in a flash.
He tallied nearly 300 all purpose
yards, rushing for 116 yards on 16
carries with two touchdowns, and
caught two passes for 80.
Quarterback Fabian Jimenez
(brother) completed seven of
eight throws for 138 yards and a
score.
The Raiders got on the board
near the midway point of the
first quarter. Brandon McFarlane
broke free on a fade route and
F. Jimenez hit him in stride for a
44-yard strike and a 6-0 lead.
A. Jimenez put the Raiders up
12-0 with a 5-yard plunge in the
second.
The Lions responded with a
34-yard touchdown toss to cut the
Raider lead in half, 12-6.
El Caballo put the Raiders up
by 12 early in third quarter with a
three-yard plunge. Kaden Tiran
caught the 2-point conversion for
a 20-8 Raider advantage.
Jackson scored on a 20-yard
scamper at the end of the third
quarter. Then in the fourth, he
picked off a Lion areal and retuned
it 65 yards to set up his final score
from the 5-yard line.
“The guys up front did a really
good job for us,” said of his lineman. “Noah Cassell, Matthew
Elmore, Austin Kaczorowski and
Michael gave us a push every
time we need one.”
The Burney junior varsity Raiders won the early contest, defeating their counterparts, 24-12.
