The couple have owned a villa at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club for over two years now, located in the Palmito Community. Apart from the tranquillity of the surroundings, the beautiful countryside and, of course, the golf, the Olsens have begun to enjoy the delights of Japanese cuisine at enso sushibar, which they fully admit they have “fallen in love with”. Is your villa at Las Colinas your first or second home? How often do you come here? Las Colinas is our second home and we come here as often as we can. It's a fantastic place to live and enjoy our main hobby: golf. How long have you owned your villa at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club? Why did you choose Las Colinas over other options? We have had the villa for two and a half years now. We chose Las Colinas firstly for the area. We knew the area well, as we had owned property in San Miguel de Salinas previously. We really liked the resort at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club, the quality of the villas and, as keen golf players; we fell in love with the golf course at first sight. The tranquillity and fact that it is a low density property development were also key factors in deciding to stay here. Moreover, we like the people who work at Las Colinas very much, as they make us feel at home here. We know you spend a lot of time here, would you like to live at Las Colinas permanently? We like snow and skiing a lot so it's ideal for us to spend half the year in Las Colinas and the other The Olsen family 5 A world apart EACH FAMILY HAS ITS PASSION “We can enjoy our favourite hobbies here in peaceful, quiet surroundings” half in Norway where, apart from practising this winter sport, we can see our children and grandchildren. You are regular customers at the enso sushibar restaurant. How do you rate Japanese cuisine? We love it; we believe Japanese cuisine is healthy and delicious. In Norway we often eat sushi but ever since we tried the food at enso sushibar we eat more sushi here than we do in Norway. “Our friends and family love visiting us when we're at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club” 6 What do you think of the enso sushibar? We love the food served there, it is very fresh and tasty, and we always receive a warm welcome. Apart from sampling the enso menu at the restaurant, do you use the take away service? We've tried it from time to time but we usually prefer to eat in at the restaurant, as we love walking through the woods to the Clubhouse. That way we combine food and exercise. What do you like doing best when you come to Las Colinas? We love playing golf and play about four times a week. We also try to take part in all the tournaments organised here. In fact, we have met some really nice people, owners and visitors, while playing golf with whom we have shared other activities at Las Colinas. A world apart 8 MY FAVOURITE HOBBY “As soon as we turn into the natural gorge at the entrance of Las Colinas we switch into relax mode” Las Colinas has been home to a very special resident for over a year and half now: the Belgian tennis professional, Olivier Rochus. After visiting the villa owned by family members at Golf & Country Club, Olivier and his girlfriend, Jessica, fell in love with the place and decided to buy an apartment immediately at Las Colinas. Apart from making the most of his stay to train for tennis tournaments and practise other sports, Olivier relaxes here, away from the hectic pace of professional competitions, enjoying the peace and quiet of the surroundings to the full, in company of his family. Why did you choose Las Colinas Golf & Country Club to buy your home? Because it was exactly what we were looking for: a second home in an area with plenty more sunshine than rain, where there was a golf course and swimming pools, and near the sea. What attracted to you to Las Colinas? The place itself. The setting is beautiful and peaceful. We usually live at a very fast pace; travelling all the time, moving to a different city every week to play in a new tournament, but as soon as we turn into the natural gorge at the entrance to Las Colinas we switch into relax mode. When was your apartment handed over at Las Colinas? We've been owners for around a year and a half. We know you are a tennis professional, what does it take to become a prestigious international player? It takes many hours of hard training, great mental strength both on and off court, and, of course, a great passion for tennis. As a tennis pro and lover of the sport, what would you highlight about our amenities? Las Colinas is a fantastic place to play sport. There are two very good clay courts; a fitness centre, which is small but well equipped; and a natural trail, which is ideal for running. Besides, the hilly landscape of the resort and surrounding areas are ideal for cycling. Olivier Rochus 9 A world apart The climate at Las Colinas is perfect for playing sport all year round, was this an important factor when choosing your second home? The climate in general was a decisive factor. Winter is very long in northern Europe, so it's great to be able to get away to the sun in Spain. And, of course, you can play tennis outdoors all year round at Colinas. I can also prepare for the “Although Las Colinas is a great place to play sport, it's also the ideal location to relax and take it easy, preferably at the Beach Club.” 10 MY FAVOURITE HOBBY next year of tournaments both physically and technically, working to improve my game, which is always great. Apart from tennis, do you play other sports when you visit Las Colinas? Golf. Lots of golf! I love it. I also really like cycling and cooking but, above all, spending time with my girlfriend, family and friends. “We try to come to Las Colinas as soon as can between tournaments and, sometimes, during the summer months.” A world apart Las Colinas International School of Falconry is a unique initiative in Spain to discover and experience the ancient art of falconry, recently proclaimed a Living Human Heritage. 12 WHAT'S NEW AT LAS COLINAS Las Colinas International School of Falconry, the thrill of flying a hawk freely You can enjoy the experience of discovering the ancient art of falconry 13 A world apart WHAT'S NEW AT LAS COLINAS It is a different and memorable experience, during which you can interact with one of our birds of prey and enjoy the thrill of watching their free flight through Mediterranean woodland. A luxurious bathing experience: the master bathroom has been designed to appeal to the senses. Villa Milano A modern, sophisticated Spanish-style villa, designed with pure lines. The Milano villa boasts spacious, open rooms. Its glass front enhances views towards the coast and the golf course. It is a protected underwater diving area spanning 19 km2. The Cousteau Foundation has ranked it as one of the best spots on the Mediterranean to practise underwater diving due to its biological diversity, good seabed conditions and spectacular shipwrecks. At A world apart we invite you to unlock some of its secrets. 35 A PLACE TO DISCOVER A world apart Located between Cabo de Palos Lighthouse and Islas Hormigas, the Marine Reserve comprises Isla Hormiga, Bajo del Mosquito and El Hormigón and La Losa islets. The excellent state of conservation of the area has led to great biological diversity, with extensive prairies of posidonia oceanica or neptune grass , as well as coral colonies, which serve as the natural habitat for a host of different plant and animal species. The seabed at the Reserve combines rocky and sandy areas, with extensive posidonia oceanica prairies 36 Its shallow seabed has posed a danger to vessels since ancient times, as testified to by the many shipwrecks along the coastline. In the area known as Bajo de Fuera, lie the remains of the Sirio, an Italian transatlantic liner carrying emigrants on their way to America, which sunk in 1906, causing a high death toll. You need to be an experienced diver in order to discover the secrets of the Sirio, as the wreck is very deep, 40 metres down, and apply for a special permit. Other important shipwrecks, such as the Minerva or Norteamérica vessels, also rest nearby on the seafloor. Underwater paradise Apart from the archaeological treasures, you can also spot large groupers, ocean sun fish, sea eels, octopuses, dentex, and there are even occasional sightings of tuna fish and dolphins. The waters at Dentro, de la Testa, de los Piles I and II are suitable for beginner divers, especially for fans of underwater photography, as there are unusual rock formations teeming with sea life, with large schools of small, brightly coloured fish swimming around. It is worth remembering that, although you do not need a special license to dive in these areas, you should always do so under the supervision of a diving school. At the coastal town of Cabo de Palos, you will find a number of clubs, run by qualified divers, where you can enjoy the amazing feeling of exploring this unique underwater world. Cabo de Palos Lighthouse The lighthouse is perched high on a rock at Cabo de Palos. According the Roman writer Pliny the Elder, in ancient times, in the same place where the lighthouse is today, there used to be a temple dedicated to Saturn. Centuries afterwards, under Philip II's rule, it was decided to build a watch tower to look out for enemy ships, which was eventually built in the nineteenth century. Cabo de Palos lighthouse stands 51 metres high (81 above sea level) crowned by a 2.20 X 3.20 metre turret rising above the cornice. Although it has been warning ships of the dangers along this coast since 1865, over the centuries has been witness to many shipwrecks like the Sirio, Minerva or Norteamérica. Restricted marine reserve Since 2002 the area has been classed as a Protected Marine Reserve, hence all diving activity is strictly regulated. Indeed, nobody, except a small number of biologists who have been granted a special license, is allowed to dive directly at Islas Hormigas. These measures aim to help protect and regenerate the marine resources, together with the development of traditional extraction techniques such as trammel nets and long line fishing, which help ensure sustainability in the area. Outside the Reserve, we recommend areas in Bajo del Descargador, which are ideal for night trips; Bajo de los Pinchosos; Escalerica and Cala Fría, and the latter are highly recommended for diving courses and initiation, apart from being a good option when the sea is too rough to allow you to explore the Reserve.
