How it all started - lupus
How it all started … LUISA [Lupus Inspired Advocacy] was set up in order to increase
awareness and strengthen advocacy for lupus - an unpredictable and relatively unfamiliar
condition that "does not have a clear set of signs”, and PEARL [People Empowerment for
Arthritis & Lupus] was recently conceived to empower patients not only with lupus but also
those with similar chronic debilitating conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis,
and ankylosing spondylitis. Along the way, it became a humbling experience to learn about
the daily struggles and triumphs in the lives of the patients who prove to us that their illnesses
do not hamper their zest for life.
Art, energy and passion unleashed … Stemming from special friendships, shared
dreams and an exceptional spirit of volunteerism, these patients and their caregivers now take
center stage to finally unravel “the Patient, the Artist” musicale and art exhibit. This special
affair is also a fitting prelude to another LUISA initiative - the Asian Lupus Summit on
November 29 to 30, themed “improving outcomes, improving lives” - is a way to thank
ourmoversandgeneroussupporters who have fueled the drive for lupus education
and research through the years.
Life can be fulfilling despite a debilitating illness. As these patients come out of their
shadows, let us celebrate the beauty, life and strength of spirit - in every patient-artist, in
every arthritis and lupus patient who may be going through difficult times, and in every
person who cares for these patients.

The Asian Lupus Summit was a
thrilling experience for us
medical students. We were
fortunate to have this opportunity
to be involved in an actual
medical convention, not just for
the experience of attending one,
but to learn from Lupus, as well.
We were provided with the
experience of attending lectures
given by different lupus experts
from around the world.
Raphael Anthony D. Guballa
Anne Therese I. Estanislao
Listening to the talks helped me comprehend some of the
things that confused me when I read Harrison's. I initially
thought that maybe the lupus summit would be
overwhelming and I wouldn't get anything. However, as we
sat there and listened, the speakers, especially Professor
Petri, shed light and made things seemingly easier.
Francisco, Joanna Mae F.
I do love how, even the experts,
were not afraid not to know the
answers to every question,
specifically when Dr. Petri was
asked on the dosage of
hydrochloroquine and she just
simply answered I don’t know
either, it just gave a good result
in my practice.
De Guzman, Lesleimar M.
Attending the Asian Lupus Summit was a big opportunity for me to
expound my knowledge about SLE and to experience an international
conference. It was my first time to witness an overwhelming event seeing
doctors from all around the world team up to share their understanding
and awareness, and give their best possible treatment modalities on the
disease that we all know has no cure. No medical student would refuse
to accept a grand educational occasion like this.
Fidel, Karlo P.
I could have studied or
rested on that long weekend.
But I was really curious about
this, and I know I will even
gain more if I attended it. I
am more excited now to
attend more summits and
conferences especially in
rheumatology again, or even
other specializations. It is
through continuing education
indeed that will make me the
best doctor that I can be in
the future.
Garcia, Lawrence George P.
It was great to see these
world renown experts
who do research and
publish articles that I only
get to read about in
journals or books. It’s an
amazing feeling to
actually see and listen to
them in person.
