LETTER RIP
McPUBLIC O’NEWS GOES IRISH
NO WORRIES, IT’S ONLY ONE ISSUE OUT OF 52 THAT WE’LL DO THIS
You must forgive the obvious overuse of the
color green in this issue. It’s St. Patrick’s Day
and I am the son of the son of an Irishman. I
think there is a song lyric here somewhere, but
it’s true. Even though being ‘the son of the son
of’ is the only part of me that’s Irish, I can’t
help but feel like all of
me is Irish on a day like
St. Patrick’s. That’s right,
one-hundred percent
Irish. I feel like I’m not
the only one to believe
this about themselves.
Putting together this
issue of the Public News
led me to discover the
abundant rich tradition
and the countless many
Ken Petty Irish pubs that there
are in the metro North
Houston region. There’s a freaking lot of
them! It’s no wonder that the area celebrates
St. Patrick’s Day all week long, starting on the
Sunday kicking off the week with the annual
St. Patrick’s Day Parade on FM 1960 (aka
Cypress Creek Parkway).
Not only does this Sunday’s St. Patrick’s
Day parade celebrate the Irish Day of lore, but
it also helps benefit the Cypress Creek EMS
Education Scholarship programs. Over the
last five years, I am told, this has raised over
$100,000 for the cause. Well done, my fellow
Irish Springsters!
For those of you who are learning about this
parade right here, right now for the first time,
let me tell you that the parade starts at 2pm at
Champion’s Forest on FM 1960 (now call Cy-
press Creek Parkway) and flows eastward toward the motherland and ends at Kuykendahl
and FM, well, you know, that Cypress Creek
Parkway thingy. The parade route crosses at
least a couple dozen Irish businesses, a quarter
of which are pubs!
Last year, young and old, stretched out their
hands hoping to catch candy, toys and other
trinkets of good will from the parade participants. I almost think that St. Patrick’s is like a
Protestant Mardi Gras, only there isn’t an Ash
day after to repent on and give up stuff. Not
that that’s wrong, it’s just different. An Irish
kind of difference.
I encourage every one to come out to the
parade and festivities this Sunday to celebrate
the week... and the day. After all, the next
huge day to celebrate anything won’t be here
until Memorial Day (that is, not counting
Mother’s Day and Easter). In the meanwhile
we are going to have to watch our backs
(April Fools Day) and watch our wallets
(Income Tax Deadline).
I’d like to send a shout out to all the restaurants, pubs, musicians and art galleries who
have been very kind and accommodating to
the contributing editors and writers of the
Public News. It’s because of your warm reception of these fine individuals that you help
the Public News shine a light on all the great
things we have to enjoy in North Houston.
Everything from the Crescent Moon Wine
Bar, Space Cadets Collection Collection and
Two Mules Tavern to the Vapor Depot, Dosey
Doe, Conroe’s Corner Pub and to every musician who will ever grace the pages of this fine
rag with their story and song, thank you!

PUBLIC NEWS
HOUSTON – March 12, 2015 – Investing in
home improvement projects can have a huge
return – whether to create a more enjoyable
living space or to put the home on the market.
Members of the Remodelers Council of the
Greater Houston Builders Association say that
while homeowners often have big visions for
renovation projects, a look at the big picture
followed by practical steps to achieve those
goals can make all the difference.
Remodeler’s Council President Tom Pellegrin, president of Third Coast Builders,
suggests that the big picture view will help
homeowners do things in a logical order. “For
example, don’t paint and replace the floors
and then tear out the kitchen,” he said.
Larry Abbott, owner of Abbott Contracting, agrees, adding that it’s best to check the
home’s exterior – roof and siding – before
remodeling an interior space. “We’ve seen
people do the inside first, and if the exterior
is in terrible shape a storm can come through
and ruin everything,” he said. “If planning
something elaborate – especially if it’s a sizable project – getting an architect or designer
on board is vital.”
For the highest return on investment, Pellegrin recommends replacing the front door.
“A really nice front door completely dresses
up a home. And when you figure what it costs
to do a project versus what you gain in value,
adding a new front door actually comes out at
the top.”
New countertops and fresh paint make a big
difference in both kitchen and bath spaces,
Pellegrin said, and suggests updating the bath
with an upscale shower and replacing worn,
dated fixtures to give the area a modern look
and feel, considered a plus by homebuyers.
These rooms also need attention from homeowners who plan to age in the home, Abbott
said. “Make sure the doorways are wide
enough and check counter heights in case a
wheelchair is ever needed.”
Replacing a home’s windows with new
energy-efficient designs benefit not only
homeowners who plan to stay in the house,
but become a selling point to interested buyers, Pellegrin said.
The builders agree that homeowners can
make the most of a remodel by hiring a
qualified contractor and spending time upfront
communicating exactly what is wanted – before any work gets started.
“You’ve got to find a contractor you will
trust to be in your home and do the work,”
Abbott said, “And do your homework, making
sure references are recent.”
Pellegrin suggests finding a contractor who
will spend the time to assess the project.
“Some people want to keep up their homes for
resale, and some just want to enjoy the space,”
he said. “I try to get a feel for what the priorities are. If you’re going to stay for a while, the
home needs to function for your family.”

2015 at The Hobby Center for Performing
Arts located in the Zilkha Hall, 800 Bagby

Chaos arises when letters begin to fall
from a town monument and government officials ban them one by one. The
community depends on the strength of a
determined teenage girl to fight for their
freedom of speech. This unique musical
is part romance, part clever word game
and part adult fable that reminds us of
how precious our liberties are and how
important it is to have the courage to stand
up for what we believe.

March 3 through March 22
Tuesday, March 3 at 7:00pm

Alexander is having a bad day. A terrible
day. A horrible day. To be quite honest, it’s
a terrible horrible, no good, very bad day. In
this delightful adaptation of her popular book,
Judith Viorst sets Alexander’s rather trying
life to music and brings to the stage one of
America’s feistiest characters. Not only does
Alexander wake up with gum in his hair, but
his mother forgets to pack him dessert, and
his best friend decides he’s not his best friend
anymore. Alexander’s struggles with life’s daily dramas will not only entertain but educate
young audiences as they identify with Alexander and the obstacles he encounters, encouraging them to share their feelings and to realize
that bad days happen-- even in Australia.

Painting with Pastels
This is an ongoing weekly course, beginning February 5, 2015. The class meets every Thursday
from 2:00pm - 4:30pm in the upstairs classroom
at the Conroe Art League Gallery - 127 Simonton
St. - Conroe, TX 77301.
Painting in pastels is quick, easy, colorful, beautiful, very portable - and FUN! Handled correctly,
pastels will last many lifetimes and their pure
colors never fade, crack, or peel.
No stress and no pressure here to paint a masterpiece. You’ll learn how to turn “happy accidents”
into a part of your painting, or erase it - pastels are
very forgiving. Everyone will hjave a chance to
experiment with different techniques and materials, and you’ll develop your own unique style over
time.
For those who are new to art, you’ll learn the
basics of drawing and painting. For more experienced artists who are new to pastels, you’ll learn
the characteristics and techniques that are unique
to pastels. At the end of each class, you’ll have a
finished or nearly-finished painting to take home,
ready for framing.
Each student is encouraged to learn at their own
pace. You are welcomed to do a class-based painting from reference photos provided by the instructor, or bring in your own reference materials to
use. We may also paint from life, or go outdoors
to paint as the weather permits.
During this ongoing course, you will:
-Improve your drawing skills, including proportions and perspective.
on Friday, March 27 at 2:30 PM. Please feel
free to attend either session. The April selection is Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle

An exhibition featuring new works by
Jamie Ellen Davis
Fresh Arts presents “troublewithwords”, a solo
exhibition of new work by local artist Jamie Ellen Davis. “troublewithwords” is a collection of
simple, organic drawings, prints, and work drawn
directly on the gallery walls that collectively
create an autobiographical narrative of the artist
and how her severe learning disabilities have
influenced her work. The result? An engaging,
self-exploratory and self-revelatory exhibition
that invites the viewer into a world where words,
in their distortion, become objects to be both

A LITTLE LATE?
by Bart Pearston
“The Party seeks power entirely for its own
sake. We are not interested in the good of
others; we are interested solely in power. Not
wealth or luxury or long life or happiness:
only power, pure power. George Orwell 1984
Writing this dystopian classic killed George
Orwell back in 1949.
The world owes him
a huge debt for his
sacrifice. At least we
owe him the time to
read it and remember it.
His scoffers ridiculed
this prophetic classic
of what “Big Brother”,
i.e. Big Government,
would be in 35 years,
it appears that 31
Bart Pearston but
years afterward we see
one of his first signs
coming to be. Our Founding Fathers, agreed
first and foremost right after freedom of
religious expression, was freedom of speech/
press. Control of the media was snatched away
from the hands of power with the creation
of the internet. Anyone could not publicly
“broadcast” whatever they wished to. Make
no mistake, the FCC means to wrestle it back.
When even mainline online media outlets
like TIME magazine contain a story with Gov.
Jeb Bush exposing what “Net Neutrality” is
all about, something is up. Transferring the
power to grant URL licenses from the US to
an international body last year was justified as
being a “good faith measure” since in spite of
the world-wide-web being created here, it is
used globally. But the FCC’s passing of a 300
plus page regulatory expansion disguised as
“Net Neutrality” is “bad faith”. The bill passed
on a 3-2 vote along purely partisan lines. (3
Democratic Commissioners voted for, 2 GOP
commissioners against).
They had to dig out a strained interpretation
of a 1934 law as their justification. Allegedly
it was to prevent “monopolization”. Companies like Netflix, Hulu, and other companies
which originally pushed this legislation, regret
it now. Imagine an almost unread regulation
(ACA. anyone?) that stifles competition and
innovation being branded as fighting “monopolization”. Really? Orwell would be proud.
War is peace, Freedom is slavery, “Newspeak”
has arrived!
A little background for those who haven’t
been keeping up with this. In 2010 Congress
granted the FCC regulating power over broadband internet ISP’s. This was struck down in
2014 by a federal appeals court since the internet was not a Title 2 “utility” like cell phones
or cable TV. The current administration and
Former Sec. of State Clinton, the current
Democrat poll leader, have expressed support
for the FCC to have the power to set fees,
deny service, and even remove “broadcasters”
under the Title 2 designation. GOP front runner Gov. Bush opposes this. Just by stating the
positions of whom I agree or disagree with,
under this stealth bill could make me a potential “target” for denial of permission to post on
the net. Is this really what we believe in?
When this paper went “digital”, I heard
many bloggers and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs warning about the danger of such
“powers”. The power to restrict dissenting
opinions from being “broadcast” by either
side is anathema to our American ideals. Just
my making such a statement here could be
used as a reason to censor me, this paper, or
both under these reg’s. Of course, in 1984
terms, we no longer call it “censorship”, in
Newspeak we refer to it a “net neutrality” and
just “regulating dissension”. Congress, which
has the actual Constitutional power to legislate
such things needs to act to overturn this bill.
Even those who are on record as being opposed to it have stated they will not bring any
bills up to overturn this since it would. “be
nearly impossible to get through Congress
without Democratic support.” But even if true,
we deserve to have them go on record as being supportive of such expansive centralized
powers being granted when they come up for
reelection.
AN APPRECIATION OF
CY TWOMBLY
by Rosanne Friedman
The camera separated portraiture from painting. What did this do for us in art?
Marcel Duchamp hired a sign painter to
paint a hand on his painting. In doing so he
separated art from craft; Image from image
maker. He defined himself as the artist not the
painter. The thinker not the craftsman. What
did this do for us in art?
The idea, the pure idea in art, is explored
with the conceptual artists of recent times. I
think of Cy Twombly. At the Menil Collection, our world class treasure trove of art and
culture, right down the street in Houston—
there is a Cy Twombly BUILDING. Full of
Cy Twombly paintings, best said-- full of Cy
Twombly ideas. Cy Twombly is a conceptual
artist. He uses paint for ideas. He paints ideas.
He rejects the usual forms of feel good art.
He works in a level of the uncomfortable. He
lived and loved to reject issues like: does it
have good craftsmanship, is it well made, does
it exhibit skill, is it neatly done?
The building is made by Cy Twombly
for this collection of his work. The building brings to mind the massive density of
Egyptian architecture. The walls are thick
when you enter, the light is a blend of natural
filtered light and artificial light one might say
lighter than air. All affords a contrast with the
architecture and the delicacy of the line:
A line, a line for line’s sake. The fragile
moment in a line. The line as a wonder. A
memory. A history. A mark toward language,
Line to evoke gentle narrative.
I visited with renowned artist Robert Irwin
and he said that when a person makes a line
once, fine, but when one makes a line for
decades, you have to take that line differently,
seriously.
Cy Twombly takes on an art standard by
making art work to come to the level of
craftsmanship it needs. He challenges you to
think through expectations of what an artist
provides. His work is not neat, it is messy.
He asks from a viewer to come to understand
the information that he gives in a painting: he
is not an illustrator, he is an illuminator.
Cy Twombly will not give us answers, he’ll
give us a bunch of questions. The deeper questions in art are what keeps it current? What
is the balance point of idea and material? If
artwork is not neat, what is it about neatness
that gets in the way of living? And the viewer,
if open to listening, will hear different questions each visit.

A FOODIE PERSPECTIVE
GOOD AS GOLD
It occurred to me while writing this week’s review that Asian and Tex Mex restaurants share a
geographical characteristic in the greater Spring/
Tomball/Woodlands/Conroe region. Drive a mile
or two in any direction along a freeway or major
thoroughfare and you’re bound to find at least
one representative (and sometimes several) of
each cuisine.
For us foodies who love both beef fajitas and
beef with broccoli, this is both a blessing and a
curse. On the one hand,
we have several choices
when dining out and
don’t have to drive very
far for lunch or dinner.
Unfortunately, having
a multitude of choices
available to us also
means that most of them
will be mediocre at best,
with the occasional hidPaul Van Deusen den gem here and there.
(Remember the good ol’
80/20 rule? Yep, it applies to restaurants, too.)
This week’s hidden gem is Golden Bowl, a
family-owned Asian cuisine restaurant tucked
away in the eastern corner of the strip center
directly behind the Chevron
station at the southwest corner
of Cypresswood and I-45. No,
it’s not the greatest location for
a restaurant. But that’s about the
only negative thing I found after
dining in three times and ordering
takeout once.
What they lack in location is
more than made up for in their
execution of service and the presentation and flavor of their food.
And Golden Bowl doesn’t just do
great Chinese food either; they
also serve very good sushi and a
few tasty Thai dishes as well.
On my first visit there we started with Potstickers ($4.95), Bang Bang Shrimp ($7.95), and
Shrimp Tempura ($5.95). While all three appetizers were quite tasty, the Bang Bang Shrimp was
by far the star of the show. It featured six shelled
jumbo shrimp tossed in a sweet and slightly spicy
mayonnaise-based sauce served on a bed of fried
rice noodles. The sauce was so good I found
myself using a fork to scrape every last bit off
the plate, and on both this and another visit, the
shrimp were perfectly cooked to just done, the
end result firm, plump, and juicy.
For entrées we tried both a Shaggy Dog and
Green Monster Roll ($11.00 and $13.00), as well
as Singapore Rice Noodles ($9.95) and Spicy
Tangerine Beef ($11.95).
My son’s Shaggy Dog Roll was good, but admittedly I’ve had better elsewhere as this is one
of my favorite sushi rolls. My mother-in-law’s
Green Monster, on the other hand, was fantastic. It featured spicy tuna, salmon and avocado,
wrapped in soy bean paper and deep fried, then
topped with spicy mayo, honey, wasabi, eel
sauce, masago and green onion. With everything
this roll had going on - sweet and spicy and
savory and crunchy – it wasn’t on the table more
than five minutes before vanishing.
The Singapore Rice Noodles, a.k.a. Singapore
by Paul Van Deusen
Mei Fun, were
quite simply
the best we’ve
had in the
greater Spring
area. (Every
time my wife
Amanda and I
try a new Asian
restaurant, we
order this dish
as one of our
benchmark
items, much
the same way
we’ll order
fajitas and
cheese enchiladas when trying a new Tex
Mex place.)
Some restaurants add too
much curry. Or they overcook the rice noodles
to a dry, clumpy, tangled mess. Or they skimp on
the chicken, pork, shrimp and egg typically included in the dish. Thankfully Golden Bowl does
none of the above, and the noodles are as close
to perfect as we’ve found. If you like this dish,
you’ll love theirs, I promise.
The Spicy Tangerine Beef was
as good, if not better, than most
Orange Beef dishes I’ve tried
elsewhere. I honestly couldn’t tell
if the citrus strips in my stir fry
were tangerine or orange, but the
twice-cooked and lightly battered
beef remained tender and the sauce
was on point.
Last week I stopped in for lunch
to try the General Tso’s Chicken
(another of my benchmarks) lunch
combination ($6.75). It’s served
with your choice of an egg roll or
vegetable spring roll, and steamed rice, fried rice
or brown rice. Unlike most restaurants, soup is
not included with the meal; instead, it’s served
complimentary at both lunch and dinner to anyone who requests it.
I opted for hot and sour soup that was pleasantly spicy and just sour enough, and an egg roll
and fried rice to accompany my entrée. The egg
roll had the typical cabbage, celery, and pork filling found in most restaurants, but it was perfectly
fried to a crisp golden brown and not the least bit
greasy whatsoever.
Their fried rice I just found to be okay. Golden
Bowl obviously uses a lighter touch than most
when stir frying their rice because it has a lighter
color and moister texture than other restaurants.
The flavor was good, but I like my fried rice
slightly crispy but not dry, with a dark brown hue
that lets you know it was cooked in a smoking
hot wok.

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH:
CHASE GASSAWAY
Public News: Describe your music and how
did you come about to have that style?
Chase: All I can say for style is that I’m honest.
I perform a lot of genres and cover multiple artists that would’nt seem to blend. But, I’ve found
a way to bring them together with my weathered vocals and simple arrangements. I tend to
fit complex movement into a style that seems
effortless. I love lyrics that expose the soul and
its imperfections. I’m drawn to vulnerable art
and try to bring that into what I perform.
most? Why?
Chase: I usually perform guitar, ukulele and
keys for my sets. But, for the performing
culture of Austin, I’m usually called to play harmonica, banjolele, trombone, harmonica, bass
and drums. I feel most at home on stringed
instruments. The layout seems to make sense
more than anything I’ve played on stage. They
resonate with me. The physics make sense
and I can see what’s happening under my
fingers.
Public News: How did you start your music
career?
Chase: I’ve breathed music since I was a
kid. From children’s choir in church; cello in
elementary school, and trombone in middle
school. I started writing songs in high school
and performing them live. In college I recorded
my first EP and really brought my songwriting
to the public. Since moving to Austin in 2007,
I’ve been performing my original music as a
regular part of my gigging calendar. Most of my
time is spent arranging for orchestras, but I’m
trying to keep myself on the road performing
my original songs.
Public News: What is your worst pet peeve
as a musician?
Chase: I try to be pretty accepting as a player.
It seems most people are more interested in
what you disapprove of in the music zeitgeist,
than what you are digging. As a culture, I
guess it would be how we perceive music.
Because it’s streamed in our ear buds during workouts, driving commutes, and in the
background of our restaurants, we often miss
the art of the craft. Songwriting takes days of
soul searching and even more hours to record,
mix, master and promote before it makes it to
the public. We do this with the small hope that
someone will be moved because they connect
with the music. If you’re going to venue where
a musician is pouring themselves out, be con-
Public News: What instruments do you
play, and which one do you enjoy playing
siderate. They might move you in a way you
never expected.
Public News: What is your worst road
story?
Chase: I’ve had flat tires, wrong directions and
lost bags. The worst situation is when you’re
on a route, hundreds of miles form home,
and realize your’e not matched with style of
the other bands on the bill. I can connect with
most audiences, but if they’re there to see a
metal band, I’m not going to win them over. As
a whole, music patrons want to like whatever
artist steps on stage. But, if people want to
mosh and bang their heads, I’m not going to
win them over with pensive lyrics and a transparent soul. I’ve tried. They applaud, and I’m
not sure if its because they loved it or because
I’m leaving the stage.
When Chase Gassaway is in town you can
catch him playing the Genuwine Tasting Room
in Magnolia or at the Crescent Moon Wine Bar
in North Spring. The Chase Gassaway Trio is
playing The Corner Pub in Conroe Friday night
March 13th. Go check him and the band out!

NICK’S LOCAL EATS
BERNIE’S
BACKYARD
–
A
FOODIEPALOOZA
SPRING’S FIRST SUPER FOOD TRUCK PARK!
story by Nick Rama
photos by John Wade
The north side of town has been lacking food
trucks for a while, especially the closer you get
to the Woodlands. I look at the Austin, TX’s food
truck scene and it’s nowhere near what Houston
has to offer. Bernie’s Backyard sits on 5 acres
and will have 8 different food trucks that will
be conveniently located
near Old Town Spring on
the northbound feeder of
Interstate 45 just passed
Spring Steubener. At
the front of the property
there will be an indoor
bar with plenty of seating,
dart boards, foozeball,
some popular arcade style
games and probably even
a shuffle board table.
Nick Rama Bernie’s will have plenty
of parking and a lot of
room to expand for the future. I am really excited
about having this new concept here in Spring with
a tentative opening in early May 2015.
I sat down with Brandon, the Marketing Officer
of Bernie’s Backyard, to get answers to some
questions on this epic new concept.
Nick: Tell me what to expect at Bernie’s Backyard and what makes this different than the
Houston Food Truck Park?
Bernie’s Backyard is a new concept for the area
and unique in its design, all the while being much
more than a food truck park. It’s a destination for
the whole family, containing a beer bar, outdoor
stage and climate controlled patio. There are
many events we are planning for the future, like a
farmers market or beer fest.
Nick: Brilliant! Climate controlled seating?
Tell me more about this.
We are striving to bring the comfort of indoor dining to a fun outdoor venue. We know the struggles
of eating some of the best food to be had from
food trucks on our Texas streets. We really wanted
to provide the same inspired food in a environment that tames the Texas summer so you can
enjoy your food, beer and great seating. We have
indoor and outdoor seating to enjoy your meal.
Nick: Why did you choose this location?
We feel that this is a great location since it bridges
the gap between The Woodlands and Spring. We
love the area and believe it’s a great climate for
gourmet food and great fun.
Nick: I know that the line up of the eight food
trucks are top secret right now. Can you at
least tell us what types of cuisine you will have
there?
Nick I would love to but at this time I must
decline. What I will say is multiple styles of food
are well represented by some of the hottest trucks
or trailers in Texas.
Nick: What is a FoodiePalooza?
To me its creating somewhere foodies, families
and friends can gather together and have fun, get
out and do something more than just a trip to dinner or lunch. There is something for everyone and
its food centric.
Nick: What will be the parks hours of operations and will all the food trucks be open during business hours?
We are working on the hours of operation. As we
near the finishing of construction, everything will
be firmed up.
Nick: Will you have live music daily?
We will have live
music as often
as we can. Of
course, if there is
community support behind it and
there is a need,
we will provide.
Nick: What
other special
events are you
planning to have
out at Bernie’s
Backyard?
A farmers
market, Bernie’s
Crawfish Festi-
val, car shows, corporate events and live music.
We are also working with a Local Brewer to
provide a Beer Fest.
Nick: Will Bernie’s be a place that you can
bring the whole family?
We are building Bernie’s for the family, for the
foodie, and for the fun seeker. It will be an all-
around, well rounded event center.
Nick: What can you tell me about your Beer
list so far? Will you all have mixed cocktails
too?
We are working with some local breweries as
well as more traditional offerings. We will only be
offering Beer and Wine for now.

Foodies Continued from page 9
The General Tso’s chicken was delicious. Lotus
flour (similar to rice flour or cornstarch) is used
to fry chicken and many of the other proteins
here. The resulting fried food becomes encased in
a much lighter and crisper shell, almost tempuralike, than wheat flour would produce. The sauce
was sweet and spicy and there was just enough
to coat the chicken without drowning it, a crime
I feel is unfortunately committed by far too many
Asian restaurants.
The only downside to my lunch was the two
lonely broccoli florets that accompanied the
chicken. They seemed to serve more as a garnish
and less as an addition to the entrée. I would suggest a sprinkling of uncooked diced green onion
on top as a more effective and flavorful garnish;
if you’re going to put broccoli on the plate as
well, then don’t be so chintzy and give me a few
more florets!
Other notable dishes I tried during my visits
were the Dragon & Phoenix ($13.95), Spicy Thai
Green Chicken Curry ($9.75), Sesame Chicken
($10.95), and the Volcano Roll ($12.00).
One thing Golden Bowl does well is to provide
numerous options for diners. Sushi lunch and
dinner combinations are available for diners not
wanting to order sushi a la carte, and a Bento
Box is available that allows you to pick from a
variety of Chinese and Thai entrées and sushi
rolls. There is also a Stir Fry Bar option that allows you to handpick the vegetables, protein, and
sauce to create your own noodle or rice bowl.
Service is very friendly and helpful. On a recent Sunday evening when dine in business was a
little slow with only a handful of tables, both the
hostess and another table’s waiter also checked in
on us to ask how everything was. Quite refreshing when all too often restaurant employees talk
amongst themselves or fiddle with their cell
phones when it’s slow.
As noted by several Yelpers and confirmed by
comparing several menus, Golden Bowl is just
a little more expensive than some, but not all,
of the other options in the area.
But I believe it’s a classic case
of you get what you pay for. On
every trip I made, the quality of
the food was top notch and the
portion sizes were generous.
I should also point out that
Golden Bowl has a four and onehalf star rating out of five stars
with twenty-two reviews so far
on Yelp. Quite a good start for a
new restaurant.
Next time you’re in the mood
for some quality Chinese food
or sushi, I would urge you to give Golden Bowl
a try. While they may not be the cheapest place
around, I think they’re among the best. And once
you’ve tried their food, I think you’ll agree with
me that they are indeed one of Spring’s hidden
treasures.

The Crazy World of Arthur Brown
by Mark Crampton
When I moved from southern California to
Little Cypress High School in Orange, Texas
in the summer of 1969, I brought a California
sense of music and dance that was pretty far
out for many of the country folk there! In
fact, I remember being filmed (by a hand-held
8mm movie camera, no less!), dancing at
one of the first school dances I went to! Led
Zeppelin, the Doors, Iron Butterfly, Arthur
Brown – LCHS just was not ready for me or
my music!
Wait a minute, you say. Zep, Doors, you’ve
heard of them, but who is Arthur Brown?
Well, Arthur Brown was the original, the
very first shock-rocker, the first self-described

‘VooDoo Dancer’, wearing face makeup,
fancy costumes, and a great flaming metal
helmet in his act! Arthur Brown was one of
the very first artist to use detailed stage props
to set the stories of his songs. Alice Cooper,
Ozzy Osbourne, KISS, King Diamond, Marilyn Manson, all owe their shock-rock concept
to Brown!
Brown also had an unbelievable four octave
singing voice, and was noted for both the low
gutturals and high-pitched screams and howling in his music – a precursor to heavy metal.
Brown’s greatest hit, Fire with his band
‘The Crazy World of Arthur Brown’ in 1968,
started with him screaming “‘I am the god of
hellfire!”, which became somewhat of a catchphrase of the time. Brown became known and
billed as ‘The God of Hellfire’, which he still
uses to this day.
Brown ‘s outlandish stage performances became legends of the time. During one of his
first live performances, at the Windsor Festival
in 1967, Brown set himself on fire with his
flaming helmet. Audience members doused
the flames with beer, and he finished his show
– minus most of his hair! (Where have we
heard that before, Gene Simmons fans?)
Brown often stripped naked on stage (but
was only arrested once for this, at a show
in Italy - perhaps he gave Jim Morrison this
idea), set himself on fire in many of his shows,
and frequently set the stage on fire also. Many
venues would not book him without requiring
extra insurance!
Believe it or not, Jemi Hendrix – noted
for setting his own guitars on fire on stage –
kicked Brown off his tour for setting the stage
on fire!
Arthur Brown’s next incarnation was in the
band ‘Kingdom Come’ from 1970 – 1973, He
gained further notoriety for the stage shows,
including his simulated crucifixion and heavy
drug images. (Shades of Alice Cooper! Why
does that sound familiar? )
In 1980 Brown moved to Austin, Texas,
and worked as a carpenter and painter, while
finishing a Master’s Degree in Counseling.
In 1990, Brown opened Healing Songs
Therapy in Austin. His therapy procedures
included writing a personal song for each
patient.
In 1996, Brown returned to England and
full-time performing. Apparently being true
to his roots, at a concert in 2007 he again set
himself on fire on stage, and also set another
band member on fire! Bboth continued the
show, mimus their hair!
