A D J O U R N A L DAUGHTERS OF MIRIAM CENTER / THE GALLEN INSTITUTE DMC Dear Friends, We are pleased to present the 2008 ad journal. In your hands is proof that we are a community that understands, values and supports our 87-year-young continuum of care senior facility. Despite this challenging economy, the 2008 ad journal raised a total of $321,000 and remains our largest annual fund-raiser. Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute distinguishes itself by seeking and achieving accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. We proudly note that we are the only Jewish long-term care facility in the entire State of New Jersey to meet the Commission’s high standards of care, far exceeding government guidelines. DMC achieves such excellence because of its people. From the nurses, staff and administration, to the Board of Trustees and volunteers, the Center is filled with people who create a community of caring, dignity and respect, following Jewish traditions and values. Our parents and grandparents who live here depend on the staff and we, the donors, have many reasons to be proud of our support. Renovation work continues on the second floor, with an anticipated opening in the Fall of 2009. Naming opportunities still exist for this new wing as well as the third and fourth floors which offer a very meaningful opportunity for a special donor or family. We are available to discuss these and other possibilities with you at any time, and invite you to come visit and see the changes taking place at the Center. We, the Board of Trustees, will continue to work hard to ensure that this facility will always be here to serve our Jewish community, providing these very necessary services for our seniors and fulfilling our responsibility and obligation to future generations. To those of you who participated, now more than ever, we thank you. We hope that we can look forward to continued and possibly increased support in the years to come. The rehabilitation facility underwent a total transformation, resulting in a bright and airy open floor plan which makes it easy to navigate with walkers and wheelchairs. The gleaming wood floors give the room a warm feeling, welcoming seniors and putting them in a positive frame of mind as they arrive for therapy. Flowering plants and subtle wallpaper add to the home-like feeling which pervades the physical and occupational therapy suite. Other improvements were less obvious, such as the new, well-insulated windows which keep nursing home residents, apartment tenants and day program clients comfortable as they work to maintain flexibility and balance, or to regain their strength after surgery or injuries. The Gallen Institute for Subacute Care offers a wide variety of modalities to treat the varied needs of the seniors who come to us. Whether patients need intense short-term rehabilitation for hip and knee replacements, amputations, hip and knee fractures or post-stroke recovery, or if they require medically complex services such as extended IV therapy, post surgical stabilization, comprehensive wound care or enteral nutritional therapy, the Institute provides them with the highest quality care. The rehabilitation staff works together with the medical and nursing staff on an individualized interdisciplinary care plan for each patient to achieve the best results. 10 2008 AD JOURNAL New equipment aids staff as they work to help seniors maintain, or regain, their highest level of physical function. Separate stations around the room incorporate a wide variety of modalities to accommodate the specific needs of each individual. Stairs, parallel bars, free weights, and aerobic machines, such as recumbent bicycles and treadmills, help build strength and balance. Occupational therapy workspaces allow patients to regain flexibility needed for everyday tasks. Curtained stations ensure staff can work with patients in privacy whenever required. A separate section of the subacute department is the occupational therapy area which is complete with a mock bathroom. With hard surfaces that quickly turn slippery as they get wet, bathrooms can be the most dangerous place in the home. This setup allows therapists to teach patients the safest way to navigate a bathroom and avoid serious injury. “Everyone appreciates the new space,” commented Rehabilitation Services Director Kimberly Topchiev. She added, “We are very proud of this new facility which combines the functionality of the latest modalities with a warm home-like feeling so our seniors actually look forward to their therapy sessions.” The recumbent bi cycles ensure a m ore ef ficient work leg strength and out to build help get patients back on their fee t again. As of March 2009 Stairs can be extremely hazardous to seniors who often lose muscle tone and balance.
