JACANA MEDIA
M 3 \JlLVh wKat wH OiNe
Even though Jacana Media is 21 this year, we’re still as young as our enthusiasm, always
growing and continually doing things differently. When times are tough we blossom;
when it seems prudent to publish less we’ve increased our output, set up new lists, and
found ways to keep the fragile local fiction market alive with support from the Jacana
Literary Foundation.
The Sol Plaatje European Union Award for Poetry in all 11 SA languages goes into
its second year, chaired by the legendary Mbuyiseni Oswald Mtshali, whose Sounds of
a Cowhide Drum is published in a new edition with isiZulu translations of the poems.
The European Union Literary Award for best first novel and the Caine Prize for African
Writing are wonderful sources of new talent, both local and from the continent.
In the tradition of strong woman- and personality-driven lists we have, with Melinda
Ferguson, set up MFBooks Joburg, which will showcase an astonishing pool of local
talent. The Kelly Khumalo Story, both written and steered by Melinda, looks to set the
tone for the imprint.
We’re always looking for new and interesting partners, and we’ve had fun working
with the Goethe-Institut, the African Centre for Cities at UCT, the convenors of the
Ernest Cole Award, Michael Stevenson Gallery, Artlogic and the brand new 2SQ. We’ve
co-published titles with both British and American publishers, not to mention those in
the Antipodes.
We are a little astonished at the strength of our list and we’re proud to be publishing
the biography of Kgalema Motlanthe. We delight at the excellence of our fiction, the
remarkable best-selling Rosamund Kendal with her sharp-as-needles crime thriller and
Consuelo Roland’s beautifully noir novel; we revel in the revelations revealed in Barry
Sergeant’s epic tale of banking jiggerypokery and the late but lingering Brett Kebble.
Muzi Kuzwayo will shake our complacency, and we know that a broad audience will
be enticed to read the story of radio journalist Redi Tlhabi’s loves and heartbreak. Our
natural history list grows from strength to strength: The Rhino Keepers opens a new
debate, and Trevor Carnaby extends his magic with a book for the whole family.
The children’s list is a source of joy. The remarkable Niki Daly charms with his Madiba
parable, The Herd Boy. Children will delight in the world of Kachoo, launching with three
titles and a range of merchandise.
Our authors are short listed for, and win, awards. We congratulate Ronnie Kasrils,
McIntosh Polela, Dr Mongane Wally Serote, Denis Hirson and Terry Westby-Nunn for
their achievements.
We know that we’re only as strong as our authors, who make us feel mighty, and we also
know that we’re supported by an amazing team of freelancers, printers and most of all,
that remarkable gang that makes up Jacana.

KGALEMA MOTLANTHE
The Biography
Ebrahim Harvey
Magisterial in its expanse and eloquent in its telling, Ebrahim
Harvey’s superb account of a man characterised by his
reticence provides a rare and thorough insight into this most
private, and yet among the most powerful, of men in South
Africa.
NON-FICTION
With impeccable timing and a real sense of history this
book for the first time allows the public to get to know and
understand Motlanthe.
This biography contains wide-ranging interviews with
Kgalema, his family, his friends and comrades at Cosatu, the
NUM, the SACP, the ANC and government. Unsparing in its
scope, detailed in its revelations and with a rigorously critical
analysis, this book will reveal not only the complex politician
but also the very human nature of the man.

SONGS & SECrETS
Barry Gilder
Songs & Secrets is a personal exploration of the ANC from
liberation movement to government. It follows the author
into the ANC’s military camps in Angola; to Moscow for
intelligence training; to the underground in Botswana; and
into leadership positions in the intelligence services and
administration of the new government. It unpacks the oftignored conditions in which the ANC government had to
try to turn apartheid around.
The book investigates the personal, political, psychological
and historical realities that gave birth to the new South
Africa.
Songs & Secrets is written in an anecdotal, cinematic style
– providing glimpses into the small and big events that
marked the author’s journey through the three decades of
history that led South Africa and the ANC to the challenges
they face today.

THE FOuNDErS
The Origins of the ANC and the Struggle
for Democracy in South Africa
André Odendaal
To mark the centenary year of the ANC’s foundation, this work explores
the origins of the ANC and of the people who founded it in Bloemfontein
in 1912. In effect, it is a social history of a new class of educated and
christianised African people who emerged in South Africa during the
second half of the 19th century and claimed their place in the new world;
their descendants continue to form the political and social elite in South
Africa today.

TruTH IS A STrANGE FruIT
A Personal Journey through the
Apartheid War
David Beresford
Twice voted Britain’s top foreign correspondent, David Beresford has
produced a ‘word picture’ of South Africa’s apartheid war. Borrowing
from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and plundering his own
journalism, he gives his ‘truth’ of the apartheid years. He has woven
through the book the love letters of John Harris – the ‘station bomber’,
awaiting execution on Pretoria’s death row. In combination, they paint an
often harrowing and heart-breaking, but brilliant picture of South Africa.

This is an insider’s story of political drama and
intrigue during the Mbeki era when the arms

against the executive. This book documents the
specific moment of institutional darkness in
vivid detail and serves to remind us that it was
not only reputations that were damaged by the

Africa’s new democracy.
A reissue of the classic account of black politics

The Making
of the South
African
Constitution
Lauren Segal
and Sharon Cort
10 December 2011 marked 15 years since
Nelson Mandela signed the final draft of the new
South African Constitution at a stadium in the
township of Sharpville. In celebration of the 15th
anniversary of this momentous occasion, the book
One Law, One Nation charts the story of the long
fight for constitutional rights in South Africa, and
the astonishing obstacles and complexity that
lay behind the constitution-making process after
1990. This book is a popular account of the birth
of what has been heralded as one of the world’s
most remarkable constitutions.
A complex, open-eyed book that grapples
with some of South Africa’s most urgent social
problems as they are refracted through one
appalling, frustrating, inspiring place – the Central
Methodist Church in downtown Johannesburg.
How did a place of worship turn into a shelter
for thousands of refugees? Where did they come
from? Why are they still there? Kuljian fluently
combines interviews with members of the refugee
community and key figures like Bishop Paul
Verryn with an understanding of urban dynamics,
migrancy, and national and regional politics.

risked their lives to battle apartheid when South
Africa plunged into an era of darkness in the
1960s, from which it has only recently emerged.
A searing tale of soaring hopes and ideals
betrayed, Rivonia’s Children tells the gripping and
extremely moving story of the impact of political
activism on the lives of three families.
Dennis Davis, highly respected judge of the
High Court and public commentator, and his
legal colleague Michelle le Roux, ask how
the SA judiciary can weather the storms and
crises now facing it, especially as they turn
on disputes of a political nature.

THE KELLY
KHuMALO STOrY
BOY
Kate Shand
NON-FICTION
Melinda Ferguson
with Sarah Setlaelo
Once hailed as SA’s next Brenda Fassie, Kelly
Khumalo had the world at her feet. Until
scandalous court cases, public meltdowns, fake
virginity claims, cocaine abuse and an ill-fated
relationship with SA’s most hated gospel singer,
Jub Jub Molemo – the alleged driver of the Mini
Cooper that mowed down and killed 5 Soweto
schoolboys in a drag race – all but snuffed her
once bright talent out. The end of 2011 saw Kelly
coming clean, clawing her way back from her
very public meltdown on a journey that will test
every fibre of her being. Will she make it?
John Peter was only 14 years old when he made
the tragic decision to hang himself and end his
life. He left behind a devastated family, grappling
to cope with the overwhelming loss of a beloved
son and brother and to come to terms with his
incomprehensible and unbearable decision. In
this memoir Kate Shand, John Peter’s mother,
shares the horror, rage, grief and desolation of her
own personal tsunami. She also shares a story of
transformation, healing and love. Ultimately it is a
story of a boy – just a boy like any other – and of a
mother’s survival in the aftermath of the suicide of
her child.

DYSTOPIA
James Siddall
THE rENEGADE
CALLED SIMPHIWE
Pumla Gqola
From glittering media career to sordid shebeen
gutter, Dystopia chronicles multi-award winning
journo, James Siddall’s swift plunge from darling
of the SA media word – deputy editor of Playboy
at 25 – to chronic alcohlic and addict. Dystopia
is achingly tragic in parts, outrageously funny in
others and at times shockingly sordid. But above
all it’s a story of one man’s triumph in the face of
a disease that affects as much as one in 10 of the
world’s adult population. The book James Frey
could have written if he’d told the whole truth.
Catapulted into national prominence with the
release of her multiple award-winning debut
album, Zandisile, in 2005, Simphiwe Dana has
since carved a place for herself as one of the
most significant artists of her generation. This
book, penned by respected writer, cultural rogue
and academic, Professor Pumla Gqola, is part
biography, part analysis; unconventional like its
subject, interested in understanding the ‘Simphiwe
phenomenon’ and the world that makes her
possible.

BLACK MAN’S MEDICINE
Black Man’s Medicine is all about
economic freedom. It introduces
the idea that SEE (self-economic
empowerment) is the new BEE.
Most importantly, it insists that
although apartheid was a terrible
and lamentable part of our shared
history, it should no longer define
our present challenges and myriad
opportunities for success. It is
about moving from mud and dust,
through the boardroom and on to a
new Africa, where people work hard

BACK IN FrOM THE ANGEr
roger Lucey
Roger Lucey was and is a troubadour, a singer, songwriter and musician
whose primary mandate is to reflect, through song, the world he lives in
to anyone who cares to listen. In the late ’70s the South Africa that Lucey
reflected was a cruel and violent place and his songs quickly drew the
unwanted attention of the State and security police. A covert operation
made sure that Lucey’s music career was severely curtailed and this in
when the troubadour took to other directions in search of a livelihood.
Back in From the Anger tells the story of a once promising young
musician who became a barman, roadie, sound technician, news
cameraman and many other things as he waded through life always trying
to find the voice that he had lost.

A NATIvE OF NOWHErE
A Biography of Nat Nakasa
ryan Brown
In a short but vibrant career as a writer and editor in the apartheid
South Africa of the 1950s and early ’60s, Nakasa penned features for
the country’s most influential black news magazine, Drum, became the
first black columnist for the Rand Daily Mail [...] and founded a literary
journal, The Classic, to publish African writing. By the time he was in
his mid-20s, he had written for the New York Times and been invited to
Harvard to study journalism. But like so many South African intellectuals
of his generation, leaving his homeland was not simply a matter of
deciding to go. It was also a matter of deciding never to come back.

sense of humour, of the way this new body dealt with the anticompetitive

(editors)
As in many post-conflict countries, the roles played
by women during Sudan’s long-lasting liberation
struggle continue to go unrecognised. Thousands
of women joined the southern liberation struggle in
response to a political situation that affected whole
communities, leaving the comfort and security of
their homes not just to accompany their husbands
but to fight for freedom, democracy, equity, justice,
rights and dignity.
African Solutions is the outcome of research
into the policies, programmes and experiences
identified as best practices from the first 12
countries that published Country Review
Reports (CRRs) under the African Peer Review

Sasha PolakowSuransky
Thousands of South African conscripts took part
in the Bush War and their stories are beginning
to be told. What is much less known is the view
from the other side. This book provides, for the
first time in English, first-hand, personal accounts
of the conflict leading up to Cuito Cuanavale,
as told by Soviet advisers to the Angolan army.
Their experience of the war and their views and
assessment of their South African enemies as well
as their Cuban and Angolan allies will surprise
and fascinate South African readers and at the
same time offer new insights into the conflict.
Prior to the Six-Day War, Israel was the darling
of the international Left. But after its occupation
of Palestinian territories in 1967, Israel found
itself isolated from former allies and threatened
anew by old enemies. Sasha Polakow-Suransky
tells the full story of how Israel’s booming arms
industry and South Africa’s isolation led to a
hidden military alliance that grew deeper after
the Likud Party came to power in 1977.

‘An excellent history of Namibia, which should
be accessible to a wide readership... with an
interest in colonialism and liberation on the
African continent. The coverage of both the
German period and of South African rule in
Namibia is excellent.’ – Professor Alan Barnard,
University of Edinburgh.
This is the first comprehensive history of
Zimbabwe, spanning the years from 850 to 2008.
The book tracks the idea of national belonging
and citizenship and explores the nature of state
rule, the changing contours of the political
economy, and the regional and international
dimensions of the country’s history.

(editors)
Susan Williams has written a shocking exposé of
the true story behind the death of the celebrated
UN Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskjöld, one
of the great mysteries of the twentieth century.
This volume critically examines both the
historical and contemporary dynamics shaping
political and economic developments in
Zimbabwe.

Lloyd Sachikonye
South Africa is rife with debate over the highly
controversial issue of the Zimbabwean land
reform. This book has important implications
and some significant lessons for our region.
Lloyd Sachikonye traces the roots of Zimbabwe’s
contemporary violence to the actions of the
Rhodesian armed forces, and the inter-party
conflicts that occurred during the liberation war.

Rogue Urbanism reflects the outcomes of a series of exchanges
between scholars and artists with a direct practical and aesthetic
interest in understanding the complexities of contemporary African
cities. As an ensemble it mirrors the abounding tapestry that marks
these cities. In true African style, Rogue Urbanism is both a call and

An idiosyncratic and subjective history and
‘mapping’ of Johannesburg, including art,
photographs, literary pieces, archive materials,
personal memories, postcards – all threaded
around key elements such as mining, water,
homes and city streets.
Counter Currents represents a critique of
unimaginative urban growth and a showcase of
urban development initiatives by both the state
and the private sector with the aim of shifting
public ideas and discourses.

momentous personal and political events in the life of Nelson Mandela.

A Slice of Life
Andy Capastagno
This is a collection of humorous short stories set in the mythical village
of Ystervarkrivier, a forgotten outpost of the Drakeniqua Municipality,
somewhere in South Africa. The main attraction in the village is a ninehole golf course built by a displaced Yorkshireman, Harry Corkaby.
The action is contemporary, reflecting current events, but the setting is
timeless, a pastoral South Africa with little racial tension. The richest man
in the area is Inkosi Dlamini; the poorest is Thabiso ‘Joseph’ Tshabalala,
Harry’s employee. This is farming country with a very small and spreadout population, but the community comes together to pray and play golf.

Paola Dante, dedicated career-woman and abandoned wife, is sunk in a
coma. She has a decision to make. In the space of sixty seconds she reviews
what has brought her to the circumstance of a hospital bed in ICU.
It all started with a curious incident in their youth, a tangled love-triangle
and a tragic accident. Later Daniel came back into her life and convinced
her to marry him. And then one day he disappeared while cooking an
evening meal, vanishing completely as if he had never been part of her life.

THE SEA OF WISE INSECTS
Terry Westby-Nunn
FICTION
Winner of the The University of Johannesburg Prize: Debut Award 2011
The Sea of Wise Insects is a disturbing exploration of the fragility of
memory, of guilt and responsibility. According to Alice Wolfe, fate has it
in for her. Her body is covered in scars from accidents over the years, and
everyone she’s ever loved has disappeared, mysteriously. She claims she’s a
magnet for bad luck. But others see her as a brooding misfit with a missing
finger, a borderline cutter, a stitched-up freak show. Following the death
of her brother’s beautiful, superficial fiancée, Veronica, in a sinister car
accident on Table Mountain, Alice is arrested. As the trial hurtles towards
her, Alice interrogates her past. Fiction

JuST A DEAD
MAN
Margaret von
Klemperer
FICTION
‘A rare feast – a book whose subject is people
slowly making their way through the trudge and
mud of their history, but which is also a real
page-turner. Makes visible, in a way I have not
seen before, the Eastern Cape frontier wars.’
– William Kentridge
Khalil, ‘the Companion’, is given his name by The
One Above at his birth in 1903. Despite evidence
of this divine interest, Khalil’s eighty-odd years of
life remain fairly ordinary – even though many of
these years are spent under the far from ordinary
conditions of The System in South Africa. Ashraf
Kagee, winner of the seventh annual European
Union Literary Award, evokes the richly-textured
beauty of everyday life of the last century’s Cape
Malay and Indian cultures, and deftly captures
the lyrical resonance of voices long forgotten by
history.

Liesl Jobson
Laura Marsh, art teacher and single mother, is
horrified when a visiting friend finds a corpse in
the plantations near her Pietermaritzburg house.
Things go from bad to worse when the friend, a
Zimbabwean refugee, is arrested for the murder.
Concerned that Daniel has been arrested simply
because he is a foreigner and unlucky enough
to find the body, Laura tries to help him with a
bit of amateur detection. But there seems to be
a connection between Daniel and the dead man,
and the deeper Laura digs, the more complicated
the situation becomes.
In this long-awaited collection, Liesl Jobson,
internationally acclaimed for her mastery of
the very short “flash” fiction form, turns to the
longer form of the story. She writes with panache
and hypnotic honesty about topics as diverse as
anorexia, cleaning the oven, the terror of losing a
child, exile, infidelity and desire. Few writers are
as assured in traversing the terrain of loss and fear.
Yet there is quirky humour and sly surprise in these
stories told from the perspectives of policewomen,
art teachers, athletes, bassoon players, lovers and
mothers.

Worlds in One Country is a compact, inclusive history of writing in South
Africa from the nineteenth century to 1994 that crosses boundaries of

This year’s collection tells of diverse women’s
experiences of love: romantic love, love of
family, love of friends, love of community.
This collection describes the experience of
living a life that defies prescribed boundaries,
a life that deliberately, or as a consequence of
survival, transgresses society’s defined norms.

This collection of stories, essays and poems
describes the transformation of the flight from
violence into a journey of healing, told from a
survivor’s perspective.
Whatever her age, when a girl experiences
violence, something remains inside her, throwing
her world into disarray, and sparking a range of
murmurs in the survivor’s heart.

The Au Pair is a tantalising true story of a
Cape Town wife and mother of three whose
life is turned upside down when she meets
and falls in love with her pretty and much
younger Afrikaans au pair. In essence this is an
unconventional love story, a candid memoir
of how two women found each other at an
inopportune time of their lives.
In October 2004, Nadine Raal’s son Zack was
born with a severe and complex congenital
heart defect. Raal tells the often miraculous and
sometimes heart-breaking stories of the children
and their families whose lives crossed her path
whilst battling for her son’s life.

In this volume, individual strands of the vast
tapestry that make up human experiences of
sexuality in its various forms are examined in
their own right. The threads run from Cape to
Cairo, providing lessons that can be translated
into a greater understanding of sexuality on
the continent at large.
The papers presented in this book are
characterised by a wide-ranging view and tone
that is often speculative and best viewed as a
provocative introduction to an important field
of enquiry, rather than as a state-of-the-art
assessment of sexuality in Africa.

(editors)
30 November 2006 saw South Africa become
the world’s fifth country, and Africa’s first,
to legalise marriage for same-sex couples. To
Have and To Hold: The Making of SameSex Marriage in South Africa explores the
journey to same-sex marriage. This collection
of interviews, essays and documents
recognises the multiplicity of viewpoints on
the topic, as well as the multiple aspects and
efforts that shaped the making of same-sex
marriage in South Africa.
TRANS: Transgender Life Stories from South
Africa takes the reader on a journey into the
many worlds inhabited by transgender South
Africans. The life stories recounted in this
collection are both inspiring and compelling and
reveal the courage and strength of each of the
story tellers involved. The narratives detail the
constant challenges of living in a country that,
despite its progressive Constitution, is still host to
myriad prejudices and misunderstandings when it
comes to trans people.

A Zen Life in
South Africa
In this sequel to Stoep Zen, the heady days of the first democratic
elections in South Africa and the towering presence of Nelson
Mandela have made way for the rather unspectacular work of
building a society that is still asking itself who it is, where it is
going and how it should get there. How do we apply the lens of
Zen to the situation in which we find ourselves today?

Thoughts on a Pilgrimage
Wilna Wilkinson
Caspar Greeff
The Way of Stars and Stones offers practical advice
and information about walking the Camino, the
pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela. In addition
there are spiritual reflections; an overlap of history
and personal observation, of perception and of
reality, of deep thought and light humour.
This lively travelogue follows author Caspar
Greeff’s psycho-spiritual odyssey through the rain
forests of Peru and further to Colombia, Brazil,
Venezuela and Ecuador where Ayahuasca is taken
in the dark of night at ceremonies presided over
by shamans who sing otherworldly songs that are
both magical and healing.

Nick Norman
We are co-creators of a new world and it all
starts in the soil. Food gardens deepen our
connection with nature, quieten our minds and
create a new understanding of life. The food
that is grown gives physical sustenance. The
experience of growing feeds the soul.
The diamond is the brilliant emblem of
endurance, the essence of romance, the stuff
of legend. Every aspect of this unique gem
appears in this book as well as the stories that
characterise the diamond’s remarkable history.

Life, Lunacy and Elation in

Pursuing a Dream in
Troubled Zimbabwe
Sharon Pincott traded her privileged First World existence to
start a new life with The Presidential Elephants of Zimbabwe –
the country’s flagship clan of over 450 wild elephants. She knew
nothing of Zimbabwe’s ways; she was unpaid, untrained, selffunded and arrived with the starry-eyed air of most foreigners.
For more than a decade, this passionate wildlife conservationist
has lived in the Hwange bush among the Presidential Elephants
that she is devoted to and will do anything to protect. While
things often seem to go from bad to worse, she relentlessly
perseveres in the face of overwhelming odds to stick by the
elephants she so obviously loves.

Hughes’s interest in sea turtle research has involved him
in worldwide expeditions, scientific controversy, political

survival by sheer luck. His lasting reward has been his
association with beautiful beaches and the wonderful
family of sea turtles. Hughes was CEO of the Natal
Parks Board and then Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. He is
the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from

THE rHINO KEEPErS
Struggle for Survival
Clive and Anton Walker
The Rhino Keepers focuses on the time-worn tradition of rhino poaching
to fuel the demand for the horn in the East, where it is largely used in
traditional medicines. It is a book that celebrates the conservationists’
fight against the poacher with field rangers, dehorning, radio telemetry,
translocations and sheer bloody willpower. It considers the successes and
failures of the first rhino war in Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia
and recounts the establishment of the various NGOs that have sprung up
in defiance of the wholesale slaughter of Africa’s rhinos.

Celebrating Nature and Culture in

Tony Dold and Michelle Cocks
Voices from the Forest explores the journey of celebrating the link
between people and nature, the book reveals how plants, animals and
landscapes are profoundly reflected in Xhosa language, stories, poetry,
religious rituals, healing practices and everyday customs that define Xhosa
culture. Over the years cultural and spiritual meaning of nature in South
Africa has been poorly recorded and often misunderstood. The current
trade of medicinal plants is often destructive and unsustainable with an
estimated 27 million South Africans making use of indigenous medicines.

Searching African Skies is the story of South
African radio astronomy: from the first telescope
built in the country by NASA in the 1960s, to
Africa challenging one of radio astronomy’s world
leaders, Australia, to co-host the Square Kilometre
Array project.
Mapping South Africa is the first survey of the
fascinating story of maps and mapmaking in the
subcontinent. The author reveals an appreciation
of the close relation between science, exploration
and cartography and gives due prominence to
the role played by individuals and institutions in
producing maps of increasing accuracy and detail.

NATurAL HISTOrY & LIFESTYLE
This is the story of Africa’s antelope, as well as being a practical field
guide. Antelope species and sub-species are threatened and almost
everywhere on the decline. This book tells about their conservation status,
threats and risks for survival, distribution ranges, habitat requirements,
habits and how some of the species were introduced to the scientific
world. Specific reference is made to sub-species as the conservation
prospects for many species differ from region to region. Photographs and
the latest taxonomic classifications help make the text accessible. The
Antelope of Africa aims to raise the appreciation and diversity of the
species and is a must for anyone with an interest in Africa’s wildlife.

Over the last 15 years of working in the bush, Megan has developed
a knack for unravelling the mystery of trees in a simple and fun way.
If Trees Could Talk! is more than a typical tree identification guide
– it’s a story about Megan’s experiences in the bush and individual
tree species, as well as a tool to make learning about trees simple,
inspiring and engaging. With beautiful photographs by award-winning
photographer Shem Compion.

THE HErD BOY
Written and illustrated by Niki Daly
This exquisite picture book is about a boy who dares to dream of a big
future. Malusi is a herd boy who tends to his grandfather’s sheep and
goats among the mountains of the Transkei. High above, eagles fly while
on the ground below, beetles crawl, termites scurry and dust flies as Malusi
plays games of stick-fighting with his friend. But there’s danger too…
Can Malusi save his lambs from the hungry baboon who’s stalking the
flock? And who is the old man in the shiny car who stops to chat, and
encourages the herd boy in his dream of being President?
CHILDrEN & LIBrArIES
This is a story of empowerment, self-belief and leadership, and is inspired
by the life of former president Nelson Mandela.

SHOrTY & BILLY BOY
A Tale of Two Naughty Dogs
Gerard Sekoto
Written and illustrated in 1973 by one of South Africa’s most famous artists,
Gerard Sekoto, this beautiful book tells the tale of two notorious dog-chaps
called Shorty and Billy Boy. Their thieving ways force them to leave their
home but they continue their mischief and Billy Boy is sent to jail. He dreams
about the kindness of others, and comes to realise that good deeds are the true
measure of freedom.

In the heart of Africa lies the Land of Kachoo,
with vast open plains and deep rivers, too.
Animals roam freely in their wild domain
through forests and grasslands and rocky
terrain. Big cats and rhino and Thomson’s
gazelle, elephant and zebra – they live here as
well.
The sights and the sounds in the Land of
Kachoo are uniquely African and will remain
with you. The roar of the lions on a starlit
night and the echo of hooves running away
in fright or the call of the fish eagle in the
African sun are sounds to signal your safari’s
begun. Come and explore this land, if you
dare. A wild African adventure awaits you in
there!
The books all have an activity sticker page
and map that take you into the heart of the
Land of Kachoo.
