HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
She’s up to the challenge!
By “The Woodman” Bill Wood, Ridin’ On Rep
The PowerSport Institute (PSI), Ohio’s own motorcycle
mechanics training institution, held an Open House at their Cleveland
campus on August 2, 2014 for new student orientation, student
recruitment and enrollment, as well as a cool motorcycle show.
The custom bikes on display were as awesome as you’d
expect, and there’s always lots of great motorcycles and amazing
memorabilia to see inside on their campus tours, but instead Ridin’
On wanted our readers to meet one of the students who’ll be shaping
the future of motorcycle mechanics. So I asked Shawn Moen,
Education Manager for the Core Group,
who I should interview for a profile piece
and he introduced me to Anna Dixon,
which was an excellent choice!
bikes. Then and there she proclaimed that was what she was going to
do, and her desire is still evident today.
Anna said she is “in this for the passion, not to pose as a model
on a bike or to look pretty.” She is indeed easy on the eyes with a
charming smile and a slight and utterly lovely southern drawl, but her
nick name is “Psycho Mouse” and she is out to establish her place in
the male dominated power sports world. I would not bet against this
“mouse”, nor any of the other 10 or so females in their 200-plus class.
Anna hopes to relocate to the south or southwest and open a
custom bike shop, maybe with her dad
running the business side and her mom
the purchasing side. Her current project
bike is a 1983 Honda Nighthawk 550
PSI Student Anna Dixon from PA will be graduating soon, and this “psycho
mouse” plans to open a custom bike shop with her family.
“I thought you might like to see the progress made on my
bike. Right now we’re working on a tank extension. Leaving
the only things stock are the dash (speedo and tac), the forks,
rims, and engine. Thanks so much for taking the time to talk
to me, Anna”
Most motorcycle enthusiasts I meet are grizzled and tattooed guys
bundled in black leather. Many are baby boomers pushing retirement
age. Anna is a petite 5’ 2” and 90 pound 19 year-old with a passion
for custom motorcycles! In five months Anna will graduate from the 72
week program specializing in V-Twins.
She chose to forgo PSI’s Associate Degree option, and thus
avoiding more night classes, so she could work 25 plus hours per week
instead, because she’s paying her own tuition, plus room and board.
Anna grew up in Perry County, Pennsylvania (near Harrisburg)
riding on the back of her dad’s bike. At the age of five she visited the
OCC (Orange County Choppers) and watched them build custom
2
(the only year the 550 was made). She is turning it into a single seat
“bobber” with custom seat, fenders, air intake, tank and paint job. She
and other students are also finishing a restoration job for the family
of a recently deceased classmate, Jarrod. PSI students tend to bond
together like a family and Jarrod is indeed missed and many hands will
pitch in to finish that bike.
I believe Anna is indeed up to the challenge, and that PSI is doing
a great job molding not only exceptional technical talent but the equally
important human relations skills necessary for successful teamwork in
today’s world.

every other Tuesday during the summer. They asked
their friends Matt and Samantha Spafford to ride along with them to the
Rolling Bike Night held at Margaritaville on August 12, where Samantha ended
up qualifying for a Key. Although they
were disappointed that they had been
attending for two years and hadn’t
qualified, they were happy for their
friend.”
Julie continues the story;
“Trevor and Julia came to the finale
at Margaritaville on Sept 6 to cheer
Samantha on. Little did they know
that Julia would end up getting
qualified for her own Key! Five more
qualifiers were drawn that night right
before the contestants began to try
and start the bike, so you needed to be present to win. The fifth name out
of the barrel was not present so another name was drawn. Trevor looked
at his Rolling Bike Night number with chagrin as the winning number was
only two away from his. Then he noticed his wife jumping up and down with
excitement and realized it was hers!”
And the rest is history; Julia went into a final four, then last two, and
then on to WIN a cool new bike with her winning key!
Julia enjoys riding on the back with Trevor on their Street Glide, but since
winning the Rolling Bike Night 2014 Electra Glide Police Bike “Most Wanted”,
she has signed up for the Motorcycle Safety Course to get her endorsement. Trevor is going to take the course along with her to refresh his riding skills.

SIKHS DENIED EXEMPTION FROM ONTARIO HELMET LAW
FLORIDA STATE FAIR SETTLES CIVIL RIGHTS LAWSUIT
In a big win for motorcycle club members nationwide,
the Florida State Fair and local law enforcement were
dealt a stunning blow when they agreed to settle a Civil
Rights lawsuit filed by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.)
attorney Jerry Theophilopoulos (“Jerry T”) on behalf of
the West Florida Confederation of Clubs.
The Florida State Fair and Fair employees, along
with two Hillsborough County Sheriffs agreed to pay three
members of the West Florida Confederation of Clubs a
total of $72,500 to settle the case after nearly a hundred
club members were denied entry into the fair by off-duty
sheriff’s deputies on Feb. 7, 2010 based on the fact they
would not remove their colors.
A posted policy banned “club colors” and the bikers
were threatened with jail if they attempted to enter the front
gate of the fair, and AIM lawyer Jerry T. captured the entire event on film with
a videographer, which was a pivotal reason the federal lawsuit was settled
out of court.
“This settlement is a great day for all motorcycle club members, not only
in the state of Florida, but across America,” said Jerry T., “We sent a message
that our people will not be discriminated against in a public forum.”
After the lawsuit, the no-club-colors signs were replace by a posted
policy stating that the fair may turn away or eject people who are disruptive
or who display behavior associated with “criminal gang membership.” That
cleared the way for bikers to attend subsequent fairs.
MORE MOTORCYCLES EQUALS SAFER ROADS
According to the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), an
increased number of motorcycles on the road results in a lower rate of serious
accidents. When 10% or more of vehicles on the road are motorcycles,
mopeds or scooters, there is a proportionate reduction in rider fatalities, says
Steve Kenward, CEO of the MCIA, a motorcycle trade association in England.
Japan has 98 bikes per 1,000 vehicles (9.8%), and for every 1,000 bikes
on the road, the country has 0.8 motorcyclist fatalities per year. In Europe
the ratio of bikes to cars is lower, at 73 per 1,000 (7.3%), and the rate of
motorcyclist fatalities is higher, at 1.52 per 1,000 bikes. In the USA, the ratio
of bikes to cars is just 27 per thousand (2.7%) and the motorcyclist fatality
rate is much higher, at 5.32 per thousand bikes.
Kenward told how “volume breeds safety” at the recent National Safer
Roads Partnerships’ Conference, where police forces, local authorities,
government officials and academics meet to discuss road safety.
There is also a growing body of evidence that those who start their
motoring career on motorcycles make better car drivers. With congestion on the rise, Kenward explained that getting more motorists
on motorcycles would result in a “virtuous circle” leading to better road users.
According to their research, an increase in motorcycle use has also
been proven to keep traffic flowing. A study which models traffic for one of
the busiest roads in Europe concluded that if just 10% of drivers swapped
to powered two wheelers (PTWs), congestion would be reduced for all
road users by 40%. Increase that number to 25% and congestion is
eliminated entirely.

Motorcycle-riding Sikhs in Ontario, Canada will not be exempted from
the helmet law, Premier Kathleen Wynne has ruled. The Canadian Sikh
Association received a letter from Wynne stating the Liberal government, for
safety reasons, will not allow Sikh motorcycle riders to wear only turbans as
two other Canadian Provinces currently allow.
The Ontario Highway Traffic Act requires all motorcyclists to wear a
helmet. This poses a problem for those of the Sikh faith, whose turbans don’t
fit under most helmets.
“After careful deliberation, we have determined that we will not grant
this type of exemption as it would pose a road safety risk,” Wynne said in her
letter dated Aug. 14.
Wynne said safety trumps religious freedoms in this case. “As you know,
the issue of balance between religious accommodation and public safety has
been considered by the courts in Ontario which, on this issue, have found that
Ontario’s mandatory helmet law does not infringe on the Charter of Rights
and Freedoms, nor the Ontario Human Rights Code,” she said.
In 2008, an Ontario judge ruled against a human rights challenge
launched by a devout Sikh who was fined $110 in 2005 for not wearing a
helmet while riding a motorcycle.
NDP MPP Jagmeet Singh (Bramalea-Gore-Malton) said he was “deeply
disappointed by Premier Wynne’s decision not to grant an exemption to
motorcycle helmet laws for turbaned Sikhs. Similar exemptions already exist
in the United Kingdom, Manitoba and British Columbia, and here in Ontario
the idea is supported by members from all three caucuses.”
NSW AUSTRALIA LEGALIZES LANE FILTERING
This summer the state government of New South Wales legalized lane
filtering, which allows motorcyclists to legally ride between two lanes when
traffic is stationary or slow moving. The idea behind legalizing lane filtering
was to reduce traffic congestion and queuing at intersections.
There are strict conditions attached, which include heavy fines and three
demerit points for motorcyclists caught moving between traffic at more than 30
kilometers/hour, under a new offense called lane splitting. It is also illegal for
motorcyclists to lane filter next to a curb, next to parked cars or in school zones.
Police say that early indicators show the new legislation is working,
but many motorists are still unaware of the new rules. Other road users
(motorists, cyclists and pedestrians) are advised by the Roads and Maritime
to “check twice” for motorcyclists and follow regular road rules.
BIKER PROFILING
New demographics prepared by the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC)
show the median age of California motorcycle owners was 45 years old in 2012
-- having risen from 33 years in 1990, 38 years in 1998 and 41 years in 2009.
Statistics show that the median income for motorcyclists in the Golden
State was $64,130 in 2012, more than double what it was in 1990. More than
60% reported their annual household incomes at over $50,000, with almost
20% reporting incomes of over $100,000. Almost three quarters of them were
employed. About 14% were retired.
ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES TO HELP REDUCE AIR POLLUTION IN IRAN
Nearly half a million electric motorcycles will be manufactured to help
reduce Iran’s Tehran Air Pollution.
The Iran Fuel Conservation Company (IFcC) has a plan to get 400,000
motorcycles that use gasoline off the road and to replace them with
400,000 electric motorcycles, saying, “Due to incomplete combustion, some
motorcycles pollute the air four times as much as automobiles. A manufacturer
will receive $300 for each electric motorbike it produces and sells.
Once the plan is implemented, only electric motorcycles will be allowed
on the streets of central Tehran.

There are almost no words to describe how the
big 10th Anniversary Breast Fest turned out, but
one seems to come to mind… AMAZING!!! Simply
astounding!!! Estimates have it that around 1,700
motorcycles, DOUBLE that of 2013, rode in that
June 1st event starting at Holy Grail Banks
by the Cincinnati Reds stadium, and that
means a LOT more bodies were there! With
the ride becoming so huge, one of the things
the organizers did this year was to reach out
to a variety of men’s & ladies’ local clubs to
be a part of Breast Fest as Road Captains.
They could help their community and assist in
our riders’ safety. Volunteers ranged from the
American Dawgs, American Legion Riders,
Chrome Divas, Fire and Iron, HOG of Cincy,
Shriners Motor Patrol and Southern Ohio
Bikers to many Longtime Friends of the Breast
Fest. With the 6 planned pre-rides, it made all
the difference in the world at smoothly moving
that massive crowd of chrome down the road
to the party without one incident. And what
a party it was!! Owner Mickey Teeters of

Pink Diva Warriors Run

Story by Chopperazzi Jose “Aztec Warrior” Garcia
This was my first Pink Diva Warriors Run and all I can say is WOW, what an
adventure!! The slight mist in the late June morning didn’t stop me and my road
sister from heading to Columbus, Ohio to see what the Pink Diva Warriors were
all about. We pulled into O’Malley’s Lounge and boy, were we shocked; it was a sea
of signature pink clad ladies! They were pure class as we were greeted by a ton
of hugs & kisses and felt immediately like family! Our welcoming new sisters then
guided us to the breakfast burritos, donuts and plenty of hot coffee. The group
does work for Breast Cancer, of course, but this particular event raises money
for Haven House, a shelter for women & children to have a way out of abusive
relationships by supplying them with necessities and help empower them to get
better education, jobs, housing, etc, to start a new life. There were plenty of surprises
with this event as we even got to witness a renewal of vows, with plenty of laughs
as a chaplain affectionately known as Poppa Smurf made this ceremony lively. As he
gave us his blessing, we were off on the poker run, down some of the most scenic
and breathtaking back roads around Columbus, with stops at Kickstand Saloon in Lancaster,
Tootle’s Pumpkin Inn in Circleville, Station House 81 in Commercial Point and Oak Grove Tavern
in Georgesville/Galloway, Ohio. Then we returned to O’Malley’s for plenty of food, music and
tons of raffles. I must say these ladies know how to throw a party! But they also were never too
busy to pay tribute to a fallen soldier, as we paused for a moment paying homage to some Patriot
Guard Riders who were riding in remembrance to a Hero gone. I can say I was honored and
happy to have participated in a Pink Diva Warriors run and plan to AGAIN!
McDog’s Lakeside Saloon, 3611 Bevis Lane (513-385-7803) in Cincy, once again got behind
this event wholeheartedly and opened his property up to the momentous group for a funtabulous
time of music, prizes, raffles, food and great folks! It was a gorgeous sunny day and the most
outstanding Breast Fest EVER! THANK YOU ALL!!

Ride Safe & Always EAT WELL! And feel the love!
Ingredients:
2 eggs
1 tsp ground dried thyme
2 cups buttermilk
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
4 lbs chicken wings, split and tips discarded
1 tsp salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 cup crushed saltine crackers
4 cups peanut oil for frying
1 tsp ground black pepper
Salt to taste
Directions: Beat the eggs and buttermilk together in a mixing bowl until smooth. Mix
in the chicken wings, cover, and refrigerate 30 minutes. Combine the flour and crushed
crackers with the pepper, thyme, cayenne pepper, salt, and garlic powder in a large
mixing bowl. Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 350° F. Remove the chicken
wings from the buttermilk marinade, and discard the remaining marinade. Allow the
excess buttermilk to drip from the wings, then press into the flour mixture to coat. Cook
in batches in the preheated fryer until the breading is golden brown on the outside, and
the chicken wings are no longer pink at the bone, about 10 minutes per batch. Drain on a
paper towel-lined plate, and season to taste with salt before serving.

Italian herbs, un-drained
1 jar (12 oz) home-style beef gravy
1 3/4 cups water

Cleveland CycleWerks
Story by Bill Bish
Photos by Daniel LeHoty, www.LeHotyPhoto.com
Everybody’s heard of Henry Ford, and we all know the story of the
Harley & Davidson clan, both exemplifying the great American success
story…but have you ever heard of Scott Colosimo? Perhaps someday his
name will be synonymous with motorcycle manufacturing, but for now his
Cleveland CycleWerks is a global success story in the making.
If it was easy to start mass-manufacturing motorcycles, then everyone
would be doing it; but would-be entrepreneurs soon learn an alphabet soup
of agencies with initials like EPA, ARB, DOT, FMVSS, DoC, DoL, IRS…etc.,
etc. When the Cleveland Institute of Art graduate (2004) designed his first
bikes about 7 years ago, he envisioned developing a completely Made-inthe-USA motorcycle. That proved to be very difficult as a startup, because
many of the parts suppliers and expertise had moved to Asia long before
his company started.
Not to be dissuaded or denied, Colosimo’s goal is to build a hightech factory with full-blown assembly line at his manufacturing facility on
Cleveland’s west side, located in an expansive turn-of-the-century former
Suppliers in Northeast Ohio weren’t willing to take the risk, and bureaucratic
red tape wasn’t conducive to new business ventures here in America, so
Colosimo soon found China to be much more obliging.
“We manufacture just about everything -- tanks, fenders, seats,
frames, gas tanks, almost every component,” Colosimo told Ridin’ On.
“Our motor is a simple 2 valve pushrod design, assembled by a large and
competent engine assembler.”
“We start with a blank piece of paper and design our bikes from the
ground up.” Despite the “Made In China” stigma, Colosimo claims a better
fail rate than most larger, well-known motorcycle manufacturers; “We make
better quality at a better price than our competitors.”
About three grand for any model, ranging from their standard Ace to an
old skool bobber (Heist), to their café racer (Misfit); and their product lineup
will be expanding to include everything from a moped to a scooter, to an offroad “motard” (Hooligun), a super lightweight FXx motorbike, and plans are
even underway for a “super mono” sportbike and an electric-motorcycle…
Scott Colosimo, founder and chief executive of Cleveland CycleWerks, explains to Bill Bish of Ridin’ On the many
demands and deterrents of mass-production and business start-up.

Cleveland CycleWerks began as the dream of a young designer working
for a leading U.S. Teir 1 automotive supplier. While working in Germany
he tried riding a small German 125cc motorcycle and was amazed by how
light and responsive it was. “I was amazed that small, simple bikes could be
so much fun,” so Colosimo envisioned making those kinds of bikes for the
American market, right here in his hometown.
But that turned out to be nearly impossible. Business codes,
manufacturing demands, government regulations, and developing business
relations for a 28-year-old planning a start-up in 2009 at the height of
the worst recession since the Great Depression proved overwhelming.

and engine offerings will soon grow from the 125/250cc entry level range into
larger displacement models in late 2015.
“Whenever someone thinks of the name Cleveland and motorcycles,
we want them to think of us – parts, service, customization and
motorcycles,” says Colosimo, pointing out that housed in the same factory
are Cleveland CycleWerks (motorcycle manufacturing), Cleveland Speed
Shop (aftermarket parts & apparel), and Cleveland Motorcycles (a local
dealership storefront, service center, custom chop shop and showroom).
Today, the 33-year-old chief executive overseas manufacturing and

the United States and throughout the world, and the bikes they design and

But Colosimo eventually wants his company to come home, and with the economy improving
he hopes to sell enough bikes to attract local suppliers and move operations to Cleveland, Ohio.
“The next generation Misfit is getting ready for
production. Displacement figures were not released, but
will be released in 2015 by Cleveland CycleWerks”.

“Other parts of the world see Cleveland as a bluecollar town, full of people sweating out a living at tough
factory jobs,” explains Colosimo, “and that’s not a bad
image for selling motorcycles.”
So someday soon, look for motorcycles by the
thousands to roll out of Cleveland CycleWerks, built in
the city that bears their name, and infused with the rich

LEGAL BRIEFS
What NOT to Do
after an Accident
By Ralph C. Buss
In last month’s Legal Briefs column I
delineated the most important things to remember
in the event of an accident, such as remain calm
and make sure everyone is okay and safe; call
911 if necessary and summon the police especially
if it’s not your fault; gather important information
about the accident including day/time/place and the
other driver’s license, insurance info and vehicle
description; get witness statements and their contact
info; seek immediate medical attention if you’re hurt;
and contact your insurance company and a lawyer,
etc… but here’s a list of things you should remember
NOT TO DO that are just as important:
DO NOT leave the scene of the accident, as
it is against the law and you could be charged with
hit and run even if the accident is not your fault.
Stay at the scene until police have come and gone,
making sure you have the name of the officer(s)
and that they have your version of what happened.
Be sure to request a copy of the police report.
DO NOT admit fault or say you’re sorry at the
scene, or volunteer any information about who’s to
blame, keeping in mind that anything you say can
later be used against you in both civil and criminal
cases. You may think you are in the wrong and
then learn that the other driver is as much or more
to blame than you are.
DO NOT refuse to sign a ticket – it has nothing
to do with your guilt or innocence. Your signature
only means you are promising to appear in court
to contest the ticket, or to pay it later if you wish. If
you DO NOT sign the ticket, the police officer can
arrest you. However, talk with your lawyer before
you pay a fine or plead guilty to the charges, as
you may hurt your chances of collecting damages
from the other driver later, or you may be helping
the other driver to collect damages from you.
DO NOT put off going to the hospital, thinking
it’s only a little soreness, and DO NOT wait to get
medical attention (later it will be easier to confirm
your injuries if you sought timely medical care).
DO NOT tell anyone you are not hurt. If you
are not obviously injured, tell them you want to be
examined to find out for sure.
DO NOT discuss the accident with medical
personnel in the ambulance, at the ER, during
testing and/or at the doctor’s office. What is said
may be written down and becomes part of the record
-- the same record the insurance company and jury
will use to determine the value of your claim.
DO NOT post anything about your accident
or injuries on social media, or engage in any
online discussions about your case, as opposing
insurance companies will be monitoring your
online activities for any proof that you’re not as
injured as you claim to be! Insurance adjusters
and defense attorneys will investigate your
Facebook, Twitter and related social media
accounts, blogs or web pages -- even when set as
“private” -- and look for things that can help them
avoid taking full responsibility for the harms their
insured has caused. Be very careful about new
postings and photos, and consider putting all your
online activities on hold.
DO NOT talk to the other party’s insurance
company or make statements to an adjustor or
investigator without first consulting your own attorney.
DO NOT sign any paperwork or documents
unless it is for the police or necessary for your own
insurance agent.
DO NOT accept any settlement offer without
consulting an attorney who is familiar with motorcycle
accident cases. Remember, the insurance adjuster
works for the other guy’s insurance company and
their job is to keep their company’s losses at a
minimum. Most personal injury lawyers, including
myself, DO NOT charge for an initial consultation
which allows you to get some idea of what you can
expect free of charge. If you hire an attorney to
represent you it will, of course, cost you, but most of
us accept such cases on a contingency fee basis,
meaning that we take a percentage of the monies
we recover for you, and we don’t get paid unless
you win. It has been my experience over the years
that each and every time you will be better off with a
lawyer than you would be without.
DO NOT miss your doctor’s appointments, as
that could lead to a lapse of treatment argument at
settlement time. The other side can use it against
you if you don’t follow up on treatments, attend
physical therapy sessions, or keep scheduled
doctors’ appointments as evidence you must not
be so badly hurt or suffering from as much pain.
DO NOT fail to inform your doctors and
therapists of each and every complaint you
associate with the accident every time you go,
and don’t assume they already know. If you’re
experiencing pain, say so and be accurate about
how much you’re suffering to document how the
crash adversely affected your life. ALSO, be sure
to immediately inform your doctors and therapists
of any changes or new complaints you associate
with the accident, even if it’s only a phone call. It’s
difficult if not impossible to include an additional
injury that you noticed a week after the crash if you
didn’t inform the doctor of it until months later.
DO NOT engage in any physical activities
that are not approved by your physician and
discussed with your attorney, as you can expect to
be placed under surveillance by the other driver’s
insurer. Defense attorneys and their investigators
can easily obtain access to commercial driver
license (CDL) information from the Secretary
of State, as well as hunting and fishing license
information from the Department of Natural
Resources. If you have serious injuries
that prevent you from driving
a commercial vehicle and/
or participating in
outdoor activities,
consider
not
renewing
those
licenses until you speak
with your lawyer first.
DO NOT take record-keeping lightly, as
it’s important to document your visible injuries
with photographs and paperwork, obtain vehicle
damage estimates, and maintain an ongoing diary
of your injuries, to include type and frequency of
pain, loss of sleep, loss of work time, activities you
had to miss, and any and all physical limitations.
Failure to establish a thorough record of your
injuries can lead to problems at settlement time
and a diminished value of the claim. Anytime
you have a surgery, take pictures. Save all pill
bottles, casts, braces, prescriptions and any other
items from your doctors. This is evidence of your
personal injuries, and it must be preserved.
DO NOT lie - Even if the facts are embarrassing
or detrimental to you, be truthful. The consequences
to your case can be disastrous if you’re caught in a
lie, and providing false information on an insurance
application can be used to void coverage.
DO NOT expect that just because it’s not your
fault, the other person’s insurance will pay all the
bills, fix or replace your bike, cover all your lost wages
and compensate you for your “pain and suffering.”
The at-fault party may not have any insurance at
all, no recoverable assets or a liability policy with
insufficient coverage limits. Perhaps there’s a
question of liability that will necessitate going to a
jury to resolve. The only way to safeguard against
these possibilities is to carry at least have a 100/300
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist provision in your
insurance policy as well as medpay, collision, GAP,
UM property damage and PIP for those in states
such as Kentucky. If you’ve put money into the
motorcycle, it would also be best to have an agreed
or stated value of the motorcycle as well. Check
your policy -- just because you requested “full
coverage” is no guarantee that’s what you actually
paid for. Once you need it and find you don’t have,
it will be too late.
DO NOT wait. The longer you wait to get legal
advice, the harder it is to prove your case. After an
accident, there are many forms and claim notices
which have short time deadlines to file. A personal
injury lawyer has the knowledge necessary to
know what papers to file and how, when and
where to file them. Additionally, only a personal
injury lawyer has the knowledge necessary to put
your case in suit, and most insurance companies
don’t take claims seriously until they see your
case moving in the court system.

FIRST BLIND PERSON TO CIRCUMNAVIGATE THE
GLOBE ON A MOTORCYCLE: CATHY BIRCHALL
Cathy Birchall is the first blind person to travel around the world on a motorcycle, which she did in
one year beginning in August 2008 riding pillion behind her partner Bernard Smith, an avid motorcycle
rider for over 30 years.
Birchall and her partner Smith both kept journals during the trip and eventually wrote a book about
their journey titled Touching The World: A Blind Woman, Two Wheels and 25,000 Miles, which has
just been released to the public. The trip actually covered 26,385 miles, as well as thirty-one countries
and five continents, on an 18-year-old BMW motorcycle. They were married on August 20th 2012 after
Cathy was diagnosed with cancer from which she is recovering.
Birchall has been completely blind since her late twenties due to retinitis pigmentosa and was in her fifties
during the trip. When asked if she had any tips for
anyone looking to do something similar, her response
was; “I’d suggest they go for it. Don’t say no to any
opportunity that comes your way, because life’s too
short. Anything is possible with the right sort of help.”
She and her husband are originally from
Warrington, Cheshire, which is in England.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Actually, a fellow
Brit, Elspeth Beard, from London became
the first woman to circumnavigate the world by
motorcycle in 1984, a journey that took 3 years
and covered 48,000 miles aboard her used ‘74
R 60/6 BMW that the 24-year-old iron butt
said at the time; “gave me the bug for travel
on a bike. It’s the best way to get around cheap, efficient and I enjoy the freedom.”

Sittin’ Pretty
STREET
SMARTS
By Dinah Meister
Fifteen years ago, if someone had told me that one of
the most important aspects of operating a motorcycle safely
is riding posture, I probably would have laughed. What??
POSTURE?! You’re kidding, right? Well…nope. The more I
learned, the more I realized how important it is. Let me explain.
When I was learning to be a Rider Coach, they
taught us to evaluate a rider from the head down. We
scanned the head, shoulders, hands, knees, and feet. After
teaching multiple classes of student-riders of various
experience levels, the rider “don’t’s” became evident
quickly. By improving certain basic posture elements, rider
performance improved. Let’s consider some of the basics of
good riding posture
the elbows. This will protect
against fatigue and keep
good blood flow to the fingers
and hands.
Wrist position. Very important! Developing good
throttle control is especially important to new riders. Having
your right wrist in the proper starting position is key to
having good throttle control and easy access to the front
brake. An easy way to check yourself is to look at your right
hand/wrist position on the throttle, wrapping all four fingers
around the throttle. Position your hand so that the knuckles
are pointing up instead of forward or down. By starting
out with the “knuckles up” position, it limits how much gas
Head and eyes up. If you’ve ever taken a
Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) class, I know you’ve
heard this piece of advice. Riders should keep their
head and eyes up and look ahead. By looking down at
the pavement immediately in front of the motorcycle, one
begins to lose directional control. When stopping, or riding
slowly, it is even more important to keep the head and eyes
focused up. As you apply the brakes to stop, look straight
ahead instead of down. This will help your maintain balance
of the motorcycle at a time when it can be unstable.
Shoulders/arms. The shoulders and back should be
relaxed. Riders’ arms should be relaxed and slightly bent at
one can give the throttle. By limiting the amount of gas, the
starting out movement of the motorcycle will be smoother
and not an abrupt jump. If you’ve ever heard someone say
that the bike “got away from me”…the cause was likely that
they had their hand in the wrong position on the throttle.
Knees. Knees should be tucked in against the tank,
not flapping out in the wind. Having your knees sticking
way out may not affect a rider much going down the road
at 30mph, but when you slow down, the wind flaps (I mean
knees) will destabilize the bike and could cause the rider to
lose balance and directional control. Keep the knees tucked
in and your center of gravity will thank you.
Feet. Position the feet on the controls comfortably
so that you can reach the gear shift lever and the rear brake
quickly and easily.
Most people think that they’re good riders. Some
are, some are not. If you’re one of the good riders, you
probably are already using these techniques. If you are not
using these techniques, give ‘em a try and see how they
work. You might be surprised that these techniques may
help you improve your riding performance and skills. If you
want more in-depth information and practice, contact your
local MSF course provider and ask about upcoming classes.

Steven both went down in an accident involving a
tow truck at the intersection of
W. 105 and Jasper
on Cleveland’s west
side. Twig suffered a
TBI (traumatic brain
injury). While Steven
fully recovered,
Twig has been
continuously
hospitalized and
only recently was he
moved to a nursing
facility. Pending
legal issues
preclude giving further
details, but it suffices to say: Twig’s rehab
will be extensive and expensive.
About 200 bikes and 300 riders
showed up for a fund raising poker run in
Twig’s honor, a “Rally For Twig”. It was a
very tight knit gathering of bikers whose submerged
emotions bubbled up on a glorious spring morning
dedicated to their friend. Riders lingered at each stop
along the 60 plus mile run because so many knew
each other, so there was ample time to socialize and
there were many hugs, warm embraces, laughter, and
damp eyes. This was as much a “love fest” as it was a
poker run, and very emotional in support of Twig!
While Twig’s road to recovery might be long and
arduous, hundreds of riders rendered a Biker Nation
salute by blasting their pipes to say loud and clear
that he will not be traveling alone!
It was a ‘loud pipe prayer’
saying, “God speed Twig,
you’re in our prayers.”
Each stop offered free
food, discounted drinks,
and friendly staff. Aces
Depot, Characters
Sports Bar and Grill,
and Murphy’s Law
Irish Pub earned a
special shout out,
but all the stops did a great
job, as did the ride planners and
volunteers.
Any donations would be
welcomed and deeply appreciated
to help pay medical expenses and
to build a first floor, wheelchairaccessible bathroom for Twig’s return home: c/o Patti Calvey, 3343 W. 95th St., Cleveland, OH 44102.

BOY SCOUTS
“THANKS” POLARIS
Polaris Industries Inc. recently received a one-of-a-kind
print from the Boy Scouts of America in appreciation for its
commitment to a 10-year partnership to provide age-appropriate
vehicles, safety equipment and safety instruction to BSA camps
across the nation. This token of appreciation was presented
during a special ceremony at Polaris’ 60th Anniversary
celebration held in Minneapolis, Minn.
The original print presented to Polaris Chairman and CEO
Scott Wine and Polaris President and COO Bennett Morgan
during the ceremony was created by award-winning artist Greg
Newbold, who also has created cover art for several issues of
BSA’s Boys Life and Scouting Life magazines.
Partnering with BSA builds on Polaris’ strong history of
supporting youth-focused off-road vehicle safety programs.
Vehicles provided through the partnership include the easy-touse Phoenix 200s and Sportsman 570 EXTs, and models will be
adjusted and replaced over time to ensure that Scouts always have
the most up-to-date and age-appropriate vehicles available.
Going…going…gone! The one and only authentic “Captain
America” chopper from the pop culture flick “Easy Rider” is to
be auctioned off this month, and somebody will pay a million
dollars or more to own the world’s most famous motorcycle,
predicts “Profiles in History” (www.profilesinhistory.com),
Hollywood’s leading entertainment auction house.
The bidding war runs October 17th until October 20th for Peter
Fonda’s iconic stars & stripes panhead chopper from the 1969 cult
classic. It’s the only original and authentic motorcycle to exist
from the movie and is substantiated by three signed letters of
authenticity: one from the National Motorcycle Museum signed
by the Museum’s Director, a letter from Peter Fonda, and a signed
letter of authenticity from Dan Haggerty attesting to all the facts in
the Peter Fonda letter as being true and accurate.
There were two “Captain America” bikes built and ridden
by Fonda for the making of Easy Rider to ensure shooting
would continue should mechanical issues arise. In addition to
this bike being ridden in the film, it’s the bike that was used in
the climactic crash sequence at the end of the film. Following
production, Fonda gave the motorcycle to fellow actor, Dan
Haggerty, who helped maintain the motorcycles during the
filming of Easy Rider. The whereabouts of the other “Captain
America” bike is unknown. Prior to the film’s release, that
“Captain America” motorcycle was stolen and presumed broken
down and sold for parts. The crash bike was fully restored by
Haggerty (of “Gentle Ben” fame) and displayed for 12 years at the
National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa. Kuryakyn Debuts Crusher
Performance Division
Crusher, the all-new Performance Division of Kuryakyn, launched its
first series of brand-new and made-in-America exhausts during Sturgis
Bike Week to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the leading designer and
manufacturer of aftermarket parts and accessories.
“We have started this new division as one of the first steps in following
the initiatives we’ve laid out for our next 25 years,” explains new Küryakyn
President Holger Mohr. “Wrapping our years of proven customer service, design
innovation and customer loyalty around a truly performance dedicated team is a
powerful thing,” adding that new product development is already in full swing.
Maverick 4” Slip-Ons and 2-Into-2 exhaust systems made their debut in
Sturgis, as the new Crusher division (www.CrusherPerformance.com) looks to
fill “a void in the marketplace for stylish, premium, high-quality, performance
exhaust products; validating the slogan: Defining Style within Performance.”

REPORT
DOOBIE BROTHERS PAT SIMMONS
RIDES CANNONBALL
Founding member of
the legendary Doobie
Brothers rock band,
guitarist and motorcycle
enthusiast Patrick
Simmons, rode for a great
cause in one of America’s
most epic endurance
rides – the Motorcycle
Cannonball Endurance Run – exclusively for pre-1936
motorcycles.
Simmons took the coast-to-coast ride with his wife,
Cris Sommer Simmons, herself a well-known author
and member of the motorcycle Hall of Fame, piloting their
1934 and 1929 Harley-Davidson motorcycles on the 4,100
mile route from Florida to Washington, raising money for
“Stand Up To Cancer”.
After the Cannonball Endurance Run, held September
5-21, Simmons returned to touring with the Doobie Brothers
ahead of their upcoming album release “Southbound” set for
November 4.
Keanu Reeves’ ARCH Motorcycle Co.
Begins Production
In our October 2012 issue
of Ridin’ On, we reported the
collaboration between avid rider
and actor Keanu Reeves with
bike-builder Gard Hollinger of
L.A. County Choprods to form the
ARCH Motorcycle Company.
After two years of tweaking and
testing its KRGT-1 prototype, the
ARCH Motorcycle Company says its “retro-modern custom” is
now available on a built-to-order basis.
‘Connecting The Art and The Ride,’ the KRGT-1 features
a 122-horsepower S&S 124-CI V-Twin, Ohlins and Race Tech
suspension components, and ISR brakes, featuring “real world
rideability to match the meticulous craftsmanship.”
Manufactured exclusively in ARCH’s Los Angeles-area
factory, the category-defying KRGT-1 will be built to order
with an initial offering price of $78,000. “Production will be
limited, making ownership a coveted experience,” says ARCH,
which can be contacted at (310) 675-2724 or www.
ArchMotorcycle.com.
BUDDY HOLLY’S ARIEL UP FOR AUCTION
Just months before dying in a plane crash in the
winter of 1959, Buddy Holly and each of The
Crickets bought motorcycles to celebrate returning
from a successful world tour and rode home 350
miles in a Texas thunderstorm. Twenty years after
his death, in 1979 the surviving Crickets purchased
Holly’s limited edition 1958 Ariel Cyclone 650cc and
gave it as a birthday present to longtime friend and
fellow performer Waylon Jennings, who had

along with teen rocker Ritchie Valens.
The Ariel will go under the hammer by
Guernsey’s Auction House during their “Remembering Waylon” auction on October 5th at the Musical
Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. “The Ariel remains beautifully preserved and symbolic of a pivotal time
in American music history, still with just over 4,000 original miles and not having been ridden for over 20 years,”
say Guernsey auctioneers, adding that bidding will start at $50,000 and could go as high as one million dollars.

Evil hackers have figured out how to get nude photos of celebrities
that are their private property and then collecting and trading them
like baseball cards, some selling for a lot of money. For example, you
can get $10 million for a naked Honus Wagner.
The White House chef recently married an MSNBC news anchor. Or

President Obama is getting tough on foreign relations -- he’s wearing

Former foe Iran may be partnering with us in a coalition to defeat ISIS,
so we should be upgrading our Facebook relationship to frenemy.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie finally got married during a secret

Keanu Reeves just turned 50; any lower than that and the bus explodes. He

NSYLVANIA SALOON
TRA
It was Halloween and three vampires went into a saloon and moseyed
up to the bar.
“What will you have?” the bartender asked.
“I’ll have a glass of blood,” the first replied.
“I’ll have a glass of blood, too, please,” said the second.
“I’ll have a glass of plasma,” said the third.
“OK, let me get this straight,” the bartender said. “That’ll be two bloods
and a blood light?”

9. The uglier you are, the easier it is to get some.
8. It doesn’t matter if the kids hear you moaning & groaning.
7. Less guilt the morning after.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
A child comes home from his first day at school.
His mother asks, “Well, what did you learn today?”
The kid replies, “Not enough. They want me to come back tomorrow.”
DENTAL PROCEDURE
A man and his wife walked into a dentist’s office. The man said to the
dentist, “Doc, I’m in a terrible hurry. I have two buddies sitting out in my car
waiting for us to go play golf. Forget about the anesthetic; I don’t have time
for the gums to get numb. I just want you to pull the tooth and be done with
it! We have a 10:00 AM tee time at the best golf course in town, and it’s 9:30
already. I don’t have time to wait for the anesthetic to work.”
The dentist thought to himself, “My goodness, this is surely a very brave
man, asking to have his tooth pulled without using anything to kill the pain.”
So the dentist asked him, “Which tooth is it, sir?”
The man turned to his wife and said, “Open your mouth, honey, and show him.”
MENTAL INSTITUTION
Nathan and Mary were both patients in a mental hospital.
One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool,
Nathan suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the
pool and stayed there. Mary promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to
the bottom and pulled Nathan out.
When the Head Nurse became aware of Mary’s heroic act she
immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now
considered her to be mentally stable.
When she went to tell Mary the news she said, “Mary, I have good
news and bad news. The good news is you’re being discharged; since
you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving
the life of another patient, I have concluded that your act displays sound
mindedness. The bad news is, Nathan, the patient you saved, hung himself
with his bathrobe belt in the bathroom. I am so sorry, but he’s dead.”
Mary replied “He didn’t hang himself. I put him there to dry. How soon
can I go home?”

years, mostly for the better. It has always been our prayer that
the vendors’ area would be cleaned up and become more
wholesome for families with children to be able to go and see
some of the cool motorcycles and be able to purchase biker
goods and apparel. I would like to report there have been
a lot of advancements in that area. My wife, Ruth, and I saw
no nudity in the vendors’ area this time. But that’s not to say
there weren’t some reports of females flashing their breasts.
While the improvements are appreciated; we of the Christian
Motorcyclists Association will continue to cry out to God for
a more wholesome atmosphere in the vendors’ area and we’d
appreciate if you’d please join us in our prayers.
While sitting at the CMA booth, I was amazed at the
emptiness of the building that our display was set up in. It got
me to thinking about why it was empty. Yes, the economy has
taken its toll and I talked to some of the vendors who said the
price for a space was very high. That made me think about
Heaven, the home dear Jesus went away to prepare for us. Will
there be some empty spots in Heaven because some people
think the price is too great to pay? Apostle Paul wrote these
words to address the sufferings and the price we may pay to go
to Heaven... Rom ans 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of
this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory
which shall be revealed in us. Inevitably, we will suffer trials and
tribulations while we live upon this earth. But rest assured the
place that Jesus went to prepare for us will make all the anguish
and pain that we endure while waiting for his return will be
very much worth it. God is allowing the pressure of trials and
temptations to come upon us for his glory and
for our good to fortify and guide us.
James 1:2-4 My brethren, count
it all joy when ye fall into divers
temptations; v3 Knowing this,
that the trying of your faith
worketh patience. v4 But
let patience have her
perfect work, that ye may
be perfect and entire,
wanting nothing.
38
Let me remind you that everything that happens in the life
of a born-again Christian happens for a purpose that God will
receive glory and you will be strengthened in your Christian
walk. He does not have to explain the reason for the trials
and the problems other than what he has already said in
the scriptures; we may not understand them at the time but
remember I said these things happen for our good and his
glory. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together
for good to them that love God, to them who are called according
to his purpose. We may not like it, we may not recognize it, but
we know that God is sovereign; he is in control and he knows
what is best for us and that he is working all things out for our
good and his glory. Just trust in him!
The price, the sufferings, that we will go through is not
worthy of comparison to the pure beauty of that place Christ
has gone away to prepare. Read about it in the book of
Revelations chapter 21 and 22; the beauty and the peace that
is in that ETERNAL city cannot be described. John 14:1-3 Let
not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in
me. v2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so,
I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. v3 And
if I go and prepare place for you, I will come again, and receive
you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. God
has made it possible for YOU TO GO TO HEAVEN! He has
built it, he has prepared it, and he has paid the price for you
to go by sacrificing his only begotten Son. 2Peter 3:9 The
Lord is not slack conserning his promises, as some men count
slackness; But is longsuffering to usward, not willing that any
should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Let me ask you one more time, “Will your spot in Heaven
be empty? It’s up to you!! The Lord has gone away to prepare
it, he has paid the price for you to go and his desire IS for you
to go! It’s up to you whether you go or not, the choice is yours,
as he has given you the WAY. Ask Jesus to forgive you of your
sins and repent; have an aspiration to stop doing those things
that you know you should not, and have Faith to let him help
you navigate the rough waters of life.

HERE’S
THE DIEHL
ON…
Your vote MATTERS!
Some days I look around and wonder
what is happening to this great country.
There’s talk of taking away our right to own a
firearm, and Christians are attacked for following their religious beliefs.
How ironic – since America was settled first by people escaping religious
persecution, and independence won by regular people forced to take arms
against a tyrannical government taxing them into poverty.
It seems little by little we’re losing our basic freedoms, and the political
correct crowd thinks that people who choose to drop out of school (or burden
themselves with hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loans), don’t
work, then have children they can’t afford to feed and clothe but manage to
own iPhone and designer sneakers are inherently superior to those that work
hard, save their money, and don’t appreciate the government confiscating it
to support ever-increasing welfare programs.
It gets frustrating, seeing what’s going on at the national level – debates
over illegal immigration heating up, health care costs skyrocketing, and promises
to help out the average citizens repeatedly broken. It’s true – your one vote may
not impact the outcome of a national election. However smaller races for school
board, city and township councils, judges, county and state officials CAN be
impacted by just a few votes. And keep in mind these same small-time officials
are the people that work their way up the political food chain to become Senators
and Congressmen, Supreme Court Justices, and yes, President.
So paying attention to your local races has two important facets – First,
as mentioned above making certain that the “pipeline” of candidates are
people that share your values to decide on the big issues like health care,
immigration, gun rights, safety from Terrorism, and the Constitution.
More immediately, these local officials are the people the DIRECTLY
impact everything in your life. Starting with your local school board that oversees
hiring contracts (spending your money), and setting school policy on everything
from dress codes to the curriculum (like the abominable Common Core). Your
children and grandchildren are overseen and influenced by this board for 9
months every year. Do you know anything about them? Do you know if they’re
spending your tax dollars wisely, or investing in style over substance?
My township trustees set the budget for our local roads, township parks,
and our fire and safety (police) services. I was shocked to find that levies
supporting parks total more than the levies supporting our fire department and
police. I like parks as much as the next person, but it seems like the priorities
are out of whack here. Sure – residents approved the tax but I don’t think they
really understood they were being asked to fund parks that outpaced the cost
for basic safety services. While in general I believe my local officials have
done good job, and a good portion of the public park system was put in place
by prior administrations, I think it is time for SOMEONE willing to point out this
fact to step up and run for office. Unfortunately rather than review this issue
and make tough decisions to reduce the budget, Trustees recently attempted
to add a tax on businesses and workers (not residents!) to pay for “existing
services”. I could write an entire article on this tax proposal and the reasons
for it – as it is a very complicated issue. The bottom line however was that I
believed the tax to be wrong, in clear opposition to my mantra of “lower taxes”
and I was part of the group that worked to defeat the measure. Luckily we were
able to do so before it even appeared on the ballot. Next Trustee election cycle
there will certainly be some discussion about the attempt, and a challenger has
an excellent issue to promote in attempting to defeat the incumbent.
In 2010 a State Representative race in the Cincinnati area was won by
five votes. Afterwards the candidate on the losing side of that battle let me
know that many people came up to him to say they had not made it to the
polls on Election Day – it was a LOT more than five! The winner, Connie
Pillich, is now running for Ohio Treasurer.
In one of the biggest local judicial fights in history, Republican John
Williams was declared the winner on Election Night by just 23 votes. However
there were over 800 provisional ballots cast by voters for a number of reasons
– they were not registered, had already voted absentee, were at the wrong
location, etc. Challenger Tracie Hunter sued for these ballots to be counted.
The Ohio Supreme Court ruled to disregard these ballots according to Ohio
law. However that ruling was overturned by a U.S. District Judge and 149
of these ballots WERE counted – leading Hunter to be declared winner. The
process took two years, and Hunter received $921,000 in legal fees – paid by
the taxpayers of Hamilton County. Just a few ballots out of thousands could
have changed the outcome.
What does this have to do with your motorcycle? Just about everything
we do is regulated or taxed by some government entity. From the license
plates we are require to buy when registering our vehicles to the speed at
which we’re permitted to drive them. From the tax we pay at the gas pump,
to fines for failing to obey traffic laws. From insurance requirements to the
choices we have if we’re injured on the road – all these issues are decided
by Government. And of course everything else from your work, home, and
family is impacted by elected officials. When you don’t pay attention to WHO
is making these decisions, you have no input on WHAT is decided.
So – what can you DO? I know you’re busy – but take the time to
visit a candidate’s forum. Can’t make that? Do an internet search to find
out who is on the ballot in your area, visit their website or Facebook Page,
talk to friends that pay attention to politics. Does a candidate seem to
share your values? Are they endorsed by people or groups you identify
with? And then VOTE! No excuses – just because this is not a Presidential
Election is no reason to sit back and let someone else select your local or
state School Board, Judges, County Commissioners, City Council, State
Senator and Representatives, State Supreme Court Judges, and State
Treasurer, Auditor, Attorney General and Governor. It’s only October so
you have plenty of time to get up to speed and become an informed voter.
