SPECIFICATIONS FOR POLYMER CONCRETE
DETECTABLE WARNING SURFACES (TRUNCATED DOMES)
1.0
General
Detectable warning panel and tile products consist of truncated dome surfaces that can be
wet set (Wet Set Panels) into freshly poured concrete ramps and sidewalks, or surface
applied (Retrofit Tiles) with appropriate polyurethane adhesive to existing concrete
ramps and sidewalks to warn of upcoming hazards. The truncated dome surfaces are
intended to function like a stop sign (i.e., detectable warning) and alert visually impaired
pedestrians to the presence of hazards. This specification defines the technical
requirements for Polymer Concrete Detectable Warning Surface Products.
2.0
Submittals and Sample
A representative sample of the proposed tile to be furnished must be submitted along with
the required certified test reports for approval.
3.0
Standards
Detectable warning panel/tile products must comply with detectable warnings on walking
surfaces section of the Americans with Disabilities Act, (Title III Regulations, 28 CFR,
part 36 STANDARDS FOR ACCESSIBLE DESIGN, APPENDIX A, SECTION 4.29
DETECTABLE WARNINGS).
4.0
Design
4.1
Detectable warning panel/tile products shall be manufactured using polymer
concrete material. Polymer concrete material shall consist of calcareous and
siliceous stone, glass fibers and a thermoset polyester resin. For consistency,
detectable warning surfaces shall be manufactured using matched die molds under
heat and pressure for superior material compaction, controlled chemical curing
and uniform dimensions. Detectable Warning Surfaces material shall be tested by
an independent testing laboratory.
4.2
Detectable warning panel/tile product surface geometry shall be in accordance
with the latest ADA guideline The detectable warning panel/tile products shall
consist of raised truncated domes aligned in a square grid pattern with a nominal
diameter of 0.9-inches (23 mm) minimum to 1.4 inches (36mm) maximum, a top
diameter of 50% of the base diameter minimum to 65% of the base diameter
maximum, a nominal height of 0.2-inches (5 mm), and nominal center-to-center
spacing of 1.65 inches (41 mm) minimum and 2.35 inches (60mm) maximum.
The base-to-base dome spacing shall be 0.65 inches (16mm) minimum.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Detectable warning panel/tile product s may have radially arrayed domes, where
dome center-to-center spacing may slightly differ from the guidelines as specified
in paragraph 4.2. Check with local and federal mandate requirements regarding
specific spacing criteria and allowances for radially arrayed dome detectable
warning surfaces.
Detectable warning panel/tile product surfaces shall contrast visually with
adjoining surfaces, either light-on-dark or dark-on-light. The material used to
provide contrast shall be an integral part of the walking surface. Paints or other
applied coating shall not be acceptable.
Detectable warning panel/tile product surfaces shall be a minimum of 24 inches
(610 mm) deep and cover the width of ramp for federal installations. Check with
local and state agencies for their specific requirements.
Detectable warning panel/tile products shall have the following nominal
thickness:
• Wet set panel products shall have ½” thick material sectional thickness
excluding truncated domes height.
• Retrofit tile products shall have ¼” thick material sectional thickness
excluding truncated domes height and 1/8” tapered edges on all sides.
Detectable warning wetset panel products shall be designed to be completely
interchangeable meeting the basic panel length, width, and bolt hole location
dimensions and the ½-inch panel thickness excluding truncated dome height. The
panel bolt anchoring system overall length dimension excluding dome height shall
be 2-inches plus/minus 1/8-inch from the top panel surface to bottom of anchor
surface and shall consist of the following hardware at each bolt hole location: one
(1) each 3/8-inch by 1-3/8-inch long zinc plated concrete anchor; one (1) each
3/8-inch zinc plated flat washer; one (1) each 3/8-inch zinc plated locking washer;
and (1) each 3/8-inch by 1-1/2-inch long stainless steel round headed screw with
Phillips type head.

RECCOMENDED INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
FOR
ARMORCAST CAST-IN-PLACE REPLACEABLE OR WET SET
DETECTABLE WARNING PANELS
Required Materials: Armorcast Cast-In-Place Replaceable or Wet Set Detectable Warning
Panel - various sizes as specified by contracting work order, and
proper concrete mix as specified by the contract document.
Required Tools:
Typical tools used by concrete finishers, 25-lb to 50-lb weighted sand
bags or equivalent, and rubber mallet.
1.
Follow all safety requirements that include but not limited to, State, Federal Industry,
and/or Local safety standards. This installation instruction is not meant to supersede
any applicable Federal, State, or local agency codes or requirements. Always wear
proper safety attire when handling concrete raw and/or mixed materials.
2.
Check supplied warning panel for attached metal concrete anchors, washers. The
installed concrete anchors should be snug/tight and will be covered with Armorcast
polymer concrete plugs. If steel anchors are loose and/or can rotate, hand tighten
anchor by turning counter clockwise. Do not remove any metal hardware panel latex
protective cover during installation, the panel must be placed as supplied in concrete
with all hardware attached.
3.
After the concrete is poured, the contractor shall establish finished grade using mason
line or other appropriate methods. The polymer concrete panel shall be placed on top
of the concrete and tapped in place with a rubber mallet or by using the installer’s
weight of concrete vibrator to facilitate placement in a low slump concrete. Final
panel elevation shall be verified.
4.
Make sure the proper slope is obtained as specified in the contract document.
5.
Low slump concrete may require 25 to 50 pound weights to hold down panels after
placement in concrete.
6.
Steel edging trowel with a minimum of 1/8” radius shall be used to edge the finished
concrete around the panel.
7.
Once concrete is hardened, remove weights, and panel protective cover.
