Building the Future Through Athletics
2005 HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
This school year almost 200,000 students will participate in
MIAA high school athletics. Boys and Girls Hockey are two of the
33 sports for which MIAA sponsors end-of-season regional and
state tournaments for individual student-athletes or teams.
"Educational athletics" lead participants through important
and unique learning opportunities that prepare student-athletes
for the challenges of life. Good citizenship, sportsmanship,
leadership, integrity, loyalty, duty, ethics and respect are
essential elements of educational athletics. For more than 95
percent of graduating student-athletes, high school sports will
mark the conclusion of their involvement in organized sport. It
is for this reason that the MISSION of educational athletics is
not focused on college or professional participation, but rather
on the learning opportunities available through the "other half
of education."
The MIAA tournament experience is a celebration of excellence
for high school hockey teams across the State. We applaud the
success of each team, the coaches and their supportive
communities. The MIAA strives to provide regional and state
tournaments in a manner that ensures participants will be
proud of their achievements, and of the schools and communities
they represent.
On behalf of the MIAA Hockey Committee, Board of Directors,
and participating school leaders, I welcome you to the 2005
MIAA Hockey Tournament. Please support these student-athletes
by demonstrating positive behavior throughout the tournament.
Thank you.

James F. Mulloy Sportsmanship Award
The Massachusetts Hockey Coaches' State Association and the MIAA are
proud to present the James F. Mulloy Sportsmanship Award.
Seven years ago, James Mulloy, a great friend of high school hockey and an
outstanding educator, passed away. Jim Mulloy served as a teacher and
administrator for more than 37 years in Everett Public Schools. During this
time, he served a total of 24 years as a varsity ice hockey coach at three MIAA
schools: Dom Savio, Maiden Catholic and Everett High School. He was also
honored as a member of the Massachusetts State Coaches' Hall of Fame.
Next to his family, Jim's great love was ice hockey. As MIAA Ice Hockey Chair
and Statewide Hockey Observer, his legacy was marked by his promotion and
dedication to sportsmanship in the game. To that end, the Massachusetts Ice
Hockey Coaches' Association and the MIAA established the James F. Mulloy Sportsmanship Award. The
award is to be presented annually to the most outstanding boys and girls hockey programs in
Massachusetts. Divisions I, II and III are awarded for reflecting their allegiance to the goals of
sportsmanship.
The James F. Mulloy Sportsmanship Award will be presented to deserving teams during the state
championship games.

4th Annual MIAA Sportsmanship Essay Contest
The MIAA recently sponsored the 4th Annual
MIAA Sportmanship Essay Contest. This year's
theme was 'The Role of the Media in Promoting
Sportsmanship'. The top three finishers presented
their work as honored guests at the 11th Annual
Sportsmanship Summit, which was held in
November. First place was awarded to Ryan
Flaherty of Billerica Memorial High School. Mark
Ferry of St. Joseph Central High School took
second place. Third place went to Amanda
Jenkins of Chatham High School.
Essay winners, from left, Amanda Jenkins, Ryan Flaherty

The Role of the Media in Promoting Sportsmanship
By Ryan Flaherty
Billerica Memorial High School
The media has a profoundly negative effect on sportsmanship. In this day and age, the media glorifies
individuals, violence, and the big play. The good sportsmanship of the majority is overlooked in favor of
the negative actions of the minority. The indifference of the media to an athlete's morals on the field is
threatening the very existence of proper sportsmanship in the world today.
A true sportsman or woman tries to play a sport in the way that most benefits his or her team, regardless
of personal glory. The media does not support this philosophy. The media is in constant search of a hero,
wishing to capture viewers or readers with tales of tremendous individual feats. The focus comes to lie on
a single athlete's accomplishments rather than the team's. Undoubtedly, there are professional athletes
who, though their team has lost a game, can sleep easy knowing that the highlight of their monstrous
homerun or flashy goal will be on SportsCenter that night. This is the wrong message for young athletes,
who now measure success not in victories but in personal batting average or touchdowns scored.
Winning is not everything, but athletes should hold a team victory in higher esteem than a personal one.
Not only does the media downplay good sportsmanship, it actually encourages conduct that is clearly
unsportsmanslike. In hockey, rules allow players to fight on the ice without interference from referees.
This seemingly strange rule exists to draw television viewers to the sport because, like sex, violence sells.
Is it possible to expect a young athlete to act in a dignified manner when that athlete sees professional
"role models" brawling on the field of play? Excessive celebrations, taunting, and arguments with officials
have become commonplace and are played over and over on networks such as ESPN. If poor
sportsmanship continues to be portrayed as acceptable on the national stage there is little hope of good
sportsmanship surviving into the next generation.
Overall, the media has done great harm to the integrity of athletics in the United States. By glorifying the
individual over the team, the media is breeding a nation of showboats, prioritizing their own image above
all else. It would be for the good of all athletes, as well as fans, if this nation's media covered sports as
they were meant to be covered, as a contest between two teams, not a showcase of individual players.
2005 MIAA Hockey Tournament
DIVISION 1A Tournament Preview
by Jim Clark
How crazy was the 2004-05 season in
high school hockey?
In most years, losing five games would
put a team in danger of not making the
elite Super Eight field. This season, it
was enough to earn Catholic Memorial
the top seed.
Not that anyone should be surprised to
see the Knights at the top of the list. Bill
Hanson's club will be shooting for its
third straight Super Eight title and 12th
overall in the 15-year history of the
tournament. Despite having a young
team, the Knights lost only twice to instate opponents and generally are
considered the favorite until someone
can knock them off. Leading the way
have been the Devin twins (junior
forward Joe and defenseman Mike)
while junior Brendan Sullivan has
developed nicely in goal.
More often than not, if CM is No. 1,
then it is BC High next in line. The
Eagles, who have met their Catholic
Conference rivals in the title game the
last six years with a win in 2002, are
another five-loss club. But two of those
came to open the season and two more
came against CM. Led by senior
forwards DJ. Fimiani, Chris Riley, Mike
Roy and Eddie Bessinger along with
junior Joe Capuano, BC High won the
prestigious Cape Cod Classic and
again is hot at the right time.
Hingham has carried the torch for the
public schools for the past few seasons
and the Harbormen will be in position
again as the No. 3 seed. The
independent power has good depth and
has gotten sparks all season from
forwards Mike Genovese, Matt Riley,
Tyler McDonald, Pat McGuirk and Brian
Buckley. The defense corps is rock solid.
Waltham, the champion of the Greater
Boston League, returns in the No. 4
spot after reaching the semifinals a
year ago. Chris Maclnnis, Jackie
Brogan and Lawrence Tracy have
carried the offense while junior Jeff
Saran has stepped in and done a
tremendous job in net.

Arlington Catholic won the alwaystough Catholic Central League and will
be a tough team to handle. The only
other team besides CM or BC High to
win the title (1997), the Cougars feature
balance up front with Ryan Butler,
Patrick Noonan, Patrick Fidler O'Neil
and Michael Adams, with Jeff Oaddio
and Nolan Burns strong on defense.
Medford is making its first Super Eight
appearance since reaching the title
game in 1993 the only public school
ever to do so. The No. 8 Mustangs went
7-0-1 to end the season, winning the
Cahoon Tournament, and sophomore
goalie Colin Tracy has backboned one
of the stingiest teams around (30 goals
in 21 games). Senior Tom Tracy is the
leading scorer.
Reading represents the Middlesex
League as the No. 6 seed after
capturing the league title and closing
the season on a 9-1 run, its only loss
down the stretch coming to Catholic
Memorial. Juniors Mike Gilberg and
Mike Hubbard lead a potentially
explosive offense for the Rockets.
No. 9 Austin Prep caught fire toward
the end of the season and has a
dangerous offense with Paul Scola,
John Jamieson, David McDonald and
Ross Gaudet, as well as one of the
area's best defensemen in Steve
Capraro.
Duxbury sat atop the polls for much of
the season before losing four straight,
but the No. 7 Dragons are dangerous
with Mike Kelly, brothers Billy and
Brendan Carroll, along with Scott May,
Terry Woods and defenseman Mike
Baran. Kevin Gould is battle-tested in goal.
St. John's Prep played everyone and
played them tough out of the Catholic
Conference. Senior goalie Dean Feole
has backstopped the 10th-seeded
Eagles, while Rico Piatelli, Jason Silvia,
Alec Goolsby and Andy Haley are
players to watch on offense.

DIVISION 1 NORTH Tournament Preview
by Jim Clark
Woburn was the only team this season
to beat Super Eight entrant Reading
twice. While that wasn't enough to earn
the Tanners the Middlesex League title
or a Super Eight spot of their own, Jim
Duron's club is the No. 1 seed in
Division 1 North. Senior Sean Murphy
has led the Tanners surge to the top.
Central Catholic finished the season in
a three-way tie for first place in the
Merrimack Valley/Dual County Division.
Paul Jaskot was one of the league's top
scorers and Pat McCarron the top
netminder.
St. Bernard's will have plenty of
motivation after being overlooked for a
Super Eight berth. The Bernardians, in
just their fourth season of Div. 1,
feature one of the state's top snipers in
Todd Bartelson and a standout goalie in
Bobby Vorse.
One year after not even making the
tournament. Burlington sat atop the
Middlesex League for much of the first
half of the season before struggling
down the stretch. But the Red Devils
remain one of the teams to watch in the
postseason.
After consecutive Super Eight berths,
this was thought to be a rebuilding year
for Belmont. However, Dante Muzzioli's
young club matured quickly as senior
Kevin Vona and sophomore Andrew
Diozzi were among the Middlesex
League's top scorers.
Lexington has qualified for the
tournament for the first time since
1981. The defense has been sound, led
by seniors Mike Bienkowski and Sam
Doxsey with sophomore goalie John
Bienkowski.
St. John's (Shrewsbury) looms as the
most dangerous team in the bracket.
The defending Div. 1 state champs also
missed out on a Super Eight berth, but
senior goalie Ray Monroe has the
potential to take over a game. Plenty of
young skaters make the Pioneers a
serious threat.
Fellow Central Mass, independent St.
Peter-Marian looks to make some noise
in the postseason, led by senior forward
Garrett Happy.
Westford also shared the MVC/DCL
title and has a talented forward in
senior Chris Rogers, as well as
sophomore Craig Cardone.
Watertown is another Middlesex
League team that ended a tournament
drought, qualifying for the first time
since 1990 with a big tie against
Woburn and late wins over Lexington
and Winchester.
Acton-Boxborough jumps back into the
tournament fray behind goalie Marc
Emond, solid defenseman John
Webster and forwards Mark Grazewski
and Robbie Trainor.
Billerica finished below .500, but
earned automatic qualification with its
share of the MVC/DCL title. The Indians
have plenty of tournament experience,
Medford, Austin Prep and St. John's
Prep will have a big say in who wins this
bracket, depending on which of them
falter in their Super Eight wild card
games.

DIVISION 1 SOUTH Tournament Preview
by Mark Van
SEEDINGS/SCHEDULE
Backboned by the stalwart performances
of Catholic Conference All-Star seniors
goalie James Radio, defenseman James
Florentine
and
high
scorers
Mike
I. Duxbury (18-4-0)
2. Milton (15-3-2)
3. Silver Lake (14-3-5)
Gibbons and Ryan Leonard, Xaverian
4. Needham (14-5-1)
Brothers High School (12-6-2) should
5. Norwood (13-4-3)
again be favored to win the Division 1
6. Xaverian (12-6-2)
South Sectional. The Hawks boast a 4-
7. From Ing ham (11-6-2)
3 upset of Super Eight high seed BC
8. Barnstable (10-5-5)
High and a 2-2 tie with perennial power
9. Weymouth (10-7-3)
Catholic Memorial. The Westwood-based
10. Braintree (10-8-2)
club hopes to avoid an early upset such
as last year's second round 2-1 defeat to
Braintree despite a 3814 shot advantage.
Traditionally,
Springfield
Catholic has
been extremely successful in the postseason. With a season-opening 4-3 upset
of BC High, high expectations were set
and SC has the goaltending to capitalize.
Similarly,
Bay State League veterans
Braintree, Milton and Norwood are the
cream of the public school ranks. Each
has well-coached and
well-balanced
squads. Milton's senior goalie Rick
Bustin
made a strong
tournament
II. Walpole (9-7-5)
12. New Bedford (10-10-0)
13. North Quincy (9-9-2)
14. Falmouth (7-11-4)
15. Brockton (4-11-4)
FIRST ROUND
(1) Duxbury BYE
(2) Milton vs (15) Brockton
(3) Silver Lake vs (14) Falmouth
(4) Needham vs (13) North Quincy
(5) Norwood vs (12) New Bedford
(6) Xaverian vs (11) Walpole
(7) Framingham vs (10) Braintree
(8} Barnstable vs (9) Weymouth
debut last year and has been extremely
impressive again. Braintree always has
strong goaltending and could again
prove a spoiler and dark horse in the
sectional. Norwood upset Super Eight
team Hingham 3-1 on December 14.
Brockton upset Super Eight Waltham
and also is capable of making a run
deep into March.
If Division 1A Duxbury (18-4) fails to
defeat St. John's Prep in a Super Eight
For up-to-date scheduling and
play-in game, it becomes a major threat
to advance all the way to the Division 1
championship game.

Can Saugus capture title Number #3?
I. St. Mary's (17-2-1)
2. Beverly (14-3-2)
3. Saugus (13-3-4)
4. Lynnfield (13-4-4)
5. North Reading (12-4-4)
6. Revere (12-5-3)
7. Lincoln Sudbury (11-5-2)
8. Gloucester (12-6-2)
9. Danvers (11-7-1)
10. Triton Regional (11-7-2)
II. Haverhill (10-6-4)
12. Newburyport (10-8-2)
13. North Andover (10-9-1)
That's the challenge before the twotime defending Division 2 state
champions as they roar into this year's
playoffs. Despite being seeded third
behind St. Mary's (Lynn) and Beverly,
they're clearly the team to topple.
The Sachems won the Northeastern
Conference title this season on the
strength of offensive stalwarts Jeff
Driscoll, Rob Gannon, and Matt Serino,
who tallied his 100th career point this
season. Opponents will have to solve
steady sophomore goalie Adam Izzicupo
if they wish to dethrone the champs.
The Spartans of St. Mary's won the
No. 1 seed in 2005 by virtue of
winning the Catholic Central League
Small crown - and should make a
strong run to the finals.
Head Coach Mark Lee ('80) led his
team to a phenomenal mark of 17-2-1
and captured the Catholic Central
League Small crown.
The Spartans
played an iron tough regular season
schedule and are poised to parlay their
success into the playoffs.
As St. Mary's looks to dethrone Saugus,
they will rely heavily on team leaders
Jason Rexinis and Nick Vecchia to lead
them to glory.
Sandwiched
between
these
two
powerhouses is 2nd seed Beverly, who
knocked off Saugus in the regular
season, 4-3, for the first time in fifteen
years. With this monkey off their back,
look for the Panthers, led by MVP
candidate and resident sniper Brendan
Fullerton, to make a lot of noise in the
tournament. Minding the blue line for
Beverly will be the always sturdy Ryan
Shairs and Jamie Cullen.

illustrated by perennial power and
defending crownholder Westford (12-4-4)
only earning the ninth seed. While a
number
of
ties
hurt
its
ranking,
Westford has the ability to repeat but
will be challenged by six higher-ranked
teams with fewer losses. Top-ranked
Wilmington
(18-2)
and
third
seed
Andover only succumbed twice this year,
with second-ranked St. Mary's dropping
just one game while tying a pair. Mt. St.
Joseph and Wellesley earned duplicate
17-3 records, while Barnstable also lost
only three games while tying two. But
even giantkiller Winchester
can shock at
(13-6-1)
any time,
vanquishing Division I's top seed
Woburn while breaking its 57-game win
streak. It will be many times a great day
for hockey as upsets and overtimes
should dominate the postseason.

DIVISION 3 NORTH Tournament Preview
by Stephen Doody
SEEDINGS/SCHEDULE
The Salem Witches, 2005's top seed in
Division 3 North, have finally arrived at
a position of hockey prominence after
many frustrating years of futility. The
Witches dominated throughout the
regular season finishing atop their
conference at an impressive (17-2-0).
The loyalty and patience of the Salem
hockey faithful have been rewarded in
the form of junior left winger Justin
Gautreau, who rung up more than 50
points this season. And while Justin was
filling the net with pucks, his netminder
teammate Jake Bolduc was recording
an amazing eight shutouts. This
tremendous duo, skating under the
watchful eye of coach Kristian Hanson,
has helped resurrect a program that
nearly turned to dust.
Thankful Witch-watchers will be rooting
hard for Salem as they try to vanquish
some tough tournament foes, including
Holliston, Lynn Classical, and Dracut.
The Holliston Panthers, who punch in
with a (16-1-3) regular season record,
are led by the potent brother tandem of
Ryan and Matt O'Leary, who combined
for 60 points this season. Add Colin
Martin (23 points) to the mix and watch
the lamp light up.
Hockey fans know that a hot goaltender
can make all the difference come
playoff time. Lynn Classical goaltender
and captain, Phil Whelan, has what it
takes for the Rams to advance. They
also have tremendous scoring punch
with the talented offensive triumvirate
of Tommy Adams, Ryan Duggan and
Chad Johnson. This is a team to watch
out for.

DIVISION 3 CENTRAL Tournament Preview
by Rich Garven
SEEDINGS/SCHEDULE
For the second straight season, Marlboro
enters the Central Mass. Tournament as
the top seed. That matters little to the
three-time defending champion Panthers,
though, who only care about being No. 1
when the final buzzer sounds.
Marlboro finished the regular season
with an 18-1-1 record and has lost just
three games the last two years, one of
those being a 3-2 overtime decision to
Bourne in the state final last March. The
Panthers are a stunning 77-12-5 since the
2001-02 campaign when they began their
and
- coach John Bulter and his son, Bob. The
elder Butler has proven himself to be
among the top hockey minds in the game
while overseeing a mini-dynasty. Bob
Butler, a senior forward, has been the
area's best player for the last two years,
netting a CMass single-season record 80
points last year and adding 71 this time
around.
However, Butler isn't a solo act with
seniors Bob Kaloustian (50-plus points)
and Jeremy Link (30-plus points)
junior
Joe
Mulvey
(20-plus
and
points)
providing balance and depth. Senior
captain Mike O'Brien and junior goalie
Andrew Joyce anchor a defense that
yields less than two goals a game.
Marlboro has plenty of challengers in its
quest for what is believed to be an
unprecedented four-peat at the Division 3
level, foremost among them Gardner,
Shrewsbury, North
Groton-Dunstable.
Middlesex
and
Gardner has steadily improved over the
last four years, increasing its win total
from 10 to 12 to 13 to 15 (through 19
games) this winter. The Wildcats tied
Marlboro, 2-2, in January and are a
veteran team loaded with skilled skaters.

Senior goalie Shawn Riggins has turned in
his most consistent season yet and is
backed by capable junior Kyle Flanagan.
Senior defenseman Augustin Boutelle is
one of the best around at his position.
Shrewsbury, which reached the CMass
final in 2003, is the only team to beat
Marlboro
this
winter
(3-2
in
early
February before losing, 5-3, later in the
month). The Colonials were supposed to
be rebuilding, but Phil Irving wins the
area's mythical Coach of the Year award
for his superb reloading effort.
Junior Jason Pietrastak and seniors Jay
Flanigan and Al Lavin have each collected
20 or more points. Sophomore Mike
Mrazik is another in a long line of
outstanding goalies at Shrewsbury and is
fronted by standout senior defensemen
Chuck Snowdon and David George.
North Middlesex
continues to make
strides under coach Brian Payne and is
back in the postseason for a second
straight year. The Patriots, who won a
state title in 1998 and Central Mass,
championships in 2000 and 2001, were
knocked out by Gardner in the first round
a year ago.
Mike Mercurio and Ryan Fogarty lead the
offense,
each
topping
the
30-point
plateau. North Middlesex gets in done in
the defensive end, senior goalie Drew
Riccio, having lowered his goals-against
average by a third this season to about
2.10.
Groton-Dunstable is another program
that has shown upward mobility the last
four seasons and seemed certain to break
its school record of 16 wins in a season
before reaching the tournament.
The Crusaders, who lost by a 4-2 count to

Frederickson, the school's all-time leading
scorer, leads a group of fowards with 40plus points. Junior goalie Robert McLeod
turned in another sparkling campaign,
posting a GAA of around 1.75.
Auburn, which won just six games three
years ago, is back in the playoffs for the
second consecutive winter thanks to the
high-scoring antics of the brothers Ethier senior Chris and juniors Bill and Matt
having combined for more than 80 points.
Goalie Corey LaFlash is a two-year starter
despite being a sophomore.
Worcester, which was winless four years
ago, punched its ticket for a third straight
time as it retained its Russell Conference
championship. Wildcats Ryan Keddy and
Josh Fask both checked in with around 30
points; Mike Coffin (2.73 GAA) was steady

school history last season for outgoing
coach George Anastas. The Aztecs haven't
missed a beat a beat under Dave Quinn,
who was a longtime assistant to Anastas,
and have received balanced production
from 30-point players Jeff Bahosh, Craig
Tyler and Tim Brannelly.
Westboro last missed out on a postseason
berth in 2001. The Rangers played their
way in this winter by getting hot down the
stretch and have gotten big efforts from
brothers Chris and Scott Brady. Chris, a
senior, notched his 100th career point in
January.
Senior goalie Casey McNally may have
faced more shots than any goalie in Central
Mass, while helping Lunenburg to a fourth
consecutive playoff berth. Fitchburg is in
the playoffs for the third time in as many
years, senior Justin McDonald repeating
his 25-plus point perfromance of last
winter. Littleton is looking to get out of the
first round for the first time in four years.

2005 MIAA Hockey Tournament
DIVISION 3 WEST Tournament Preview
AGAWAM
SEEDINGS/SCHEDULE
by Jeanne O'Neil
The Republican
One hockey team dominated the
competition throughout December and
January, and that was three-time
defending
sectional
champion
Westfield High. After tying East
Longmeadow in their season opener,
the Bombers were unbeaten over their
next 11 games, propelled by the play of
senior forwards Jim Ross, Seamus
Moran, and Sean Sullivan.
But Longmeadow High was never far
behind. The Lancers had a 10-2-1 record
over that same 2-month stretch, and on
Feb. 15 they beat Westfield 7-4 to
assure themselves a share of the Berry
Division title. Longmeadow, which was
the top seed in the 2003-04 tournament
and lost the title game to Westfield 3-2
in double overtime, certainly has the
desire to change the outcome this time
around.
Though Westfield lost five straight
games in February, they cannot be
counted out come playoff time. Keep an
eye on East Longmeadow and
Minnechaug Regional, too. Both teams
played a tough Berry Division schedule
and can skate with anyone. Greenfield,
the Fay-Wright Division champion,
boasts a 200-point scorer in senior
forward Sean Killeen.
