From the desk of the Principal........
Dear Grenadier Parents: If you’re not exhausted from voting in the Comcast Sportsnet Mascot Madness contest or watching Presidential debates, I hope you are able to take a moment to read this update! We’re headed for warmer weather, and we are happy to welcome spring as we celebrate some great accomplishments from the winter at Elk Grove High School. We had an exciting Winter Athletic Season, with three Sectional Qualifiers in Girls Gymnastics (Jill Valente, Angel Skuse, and Jessica Hadler). Additionally, for the 11th consecutive year, our Coed Cheerleading team qualified for the IHSA State Finals, finishing in 12th place overall. In Boys Swimming, Jack Faleczek again qualified for the IHSA State Meet in four events! Finally, our Boys Basketball team finished the season as MSL Conference East Division Co-‐Champions for the first time since 2005! With All-‐Conference players Tyree Howard and Fulton Wingba, Daily Herald All-‐Area Honorable Mention player Brad Hubly, and MSL East Player of the Year Joe Gatziolis, the Grenadiers gave us an exciting season under the guidance of MSL East Coach of the Year Anthony Furman. We look forward to more excitement from our Spring Athletic Teams. Our Speech Team had an extremely successful season as well, finishing in 13th place in the entire state, with Emily Franke qualifying for the State Meet, Kathryn Riopel finishing in 5th Place in Special Occasion Speaking, and Megan Manoj finishing as State Champion in Oratorical Declamation! Our Business students won the Magnetar Academy Team Challenge, outperforming over 400 students from Chicago area high schools in financial literacy and stock portfolio management and earning a $5000 grant for Elk Grove High School. 17 of our SkillsUSA students qualified for the state competition in areas such as Culinary Arts, Automotive Service, and Carpentry. Our Algebra I Team qualified for the State Math Meet, and Senior Juan Rojas finished as a medalist at the IHSA State Chess Meet. What an impressive set of accomplishments by our EGHS students! And there is more to come. Our Marching Grenadiers continue to prepare for their amazing opportunity to represent the State of Illinois at the National Independence Day Parade on July 4th. I can’t wait to see them perform in the nation’s capital in front of thousands of spectators! Our Spring Musical, “Once on This Island,” will be performed on April 22-‐
23, and with our vocal, acting, musical, and dance talent, it is sure to be a huge hit you will not want to miss! We are also heading into a challenging stretch of academic rigor, with the PARCC exam, the Sophomore PSAT10, and the Junior ACT on April 19, quickly followed by Advanced Placement Exams in early May. As always, we are confident that our students will amaze us and show our community why Elk Grove High School is consistently rated as one of America’s best high schools by US News, Newsweek, and the Washington Post. We are always completely confident in our students and staff, but it’s always nice to be recognized by “outsiders” as well! Finally, please join and support our Parent-‐Teacher Council and Booster Groups! They are led by parents just like you who are working hard to give our students the best preparation for life we can possibly provide! Please visit eghs.d214.org for more information. Best wishes, Paul Kelly Principal EGHS Parent Newsletter

Mis mejores deseos, Paul Kelly Director EGHS Parent Newsletter

Some of High School District 214’s sharpest student entrepreneurs will pitch their business proposals to a panel of judges at the second annual Startup Showcase. The Showcase is the culmination of a year's worth of critical thinking, collaboration and innovation from students enrolled in District 214's entrepreneurship program, which engages students in the everyday business of creating ideas and building companies. The program, launched last year, relies on the expertise of local partners with professional roots in a variety of areas – from marketing and branding to finance and business development – who co-‐teach alongside District 214 teachers to deliver relevant education. The Showcase – featuring students from Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, John Hersey, Rolling Meadows and Wheeling high schools – will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 at the Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S Goebbert Rd. in Arlington Heights. Along with the pitches, students will have the opportunity to network with professionals, and attendees will have the opportunity to view other student entrepreneurial work and enjoy light refreshments. Students in the winning group each will receive a $500 financial award toward their postsecondary plans, funded by contributions to the District 214 Education Foundation. The entrepreneurship program has already helped students turn their ideas into reality. At last year's Startup Showcase, Wheeling High School students successfully pitched their innovative clip that helps gym-‐goers secure their weights. Since then, the students have launched their business and held a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $23,000. For more information about Startup Showcase or the entrepreneurship program, contact Dan Weidner, Director of Career and Technical Education, at [email protected]. If you would like to make a donation to support the program or event, contact Erin Brooks, Executive Director of the District 214 Education Foundation, at [email protected]. EGHS Parent Newsletter

4th Quarter - April 2016
High School District 214 has launched a Twitter-‐based scholarship contest, asking current seniors to share how they are college or career ready beyond a test score. The competition is inspired by the Redefining Ready! Initiative, which was launched in February at the National Conference for Education and designed to more accurately determine college and career readiness. Redefining Ready! includes various metrics, including success in Advanced Placement or dual credit classes, completion of internships or industry certifications and co-‐curricular participation to better assess students' potential for postsecondary success. To enter the contest, students must use one or more of those metrics to explain -‐-‐ in a 30-‐second maximum video on Twitter -‐-‐ why they are college or career ready. The District 214 Education Foundation will award up to two $1,000 scholarships, funded by AASA, The School Administrators Association, and an anonymous donor. Students must post their videos to Twitter, using the #RedefiningReady hashtag and tagging @District214 in their scholarship entry tweet. Students can use phones, iPads or video cameras to film the videos, which will be judged on compelling content. Creativity is encouraged. "We are looking for genuine stories about how one or two of these metrics have better shaped and positioned our students for success," said Erin Brooks, executive director of the District 214 Education Foundation. "We want to know how the opportunities within District 214, and the hard work of our students, helped propel them forward. We're excited to see the entries." As part of the contest, students must also fill out a brief application and return it to their college counselor. Winners will be determined by a committee of administrators and college counselors. Dear Parent/Guardian and Staff Members:
In 1999 the Illinois General Assembly passed laws requiring that public schools notify
parents/guardians and school employees at least 48 hours prior to any pesticide
applications on school property. The term “pesticide” includes insecticides, herbicides,
rodenticides, and fungicides. The notification requirement extends to both indoor and
outdoor pesticide applications. Excluded from the notification requirement are
antimicrobial agents (such as disinfectants, sanitizers, or deodorizers), insecticide baits,
and rodenticide baits.
Elk Grove High School has therefore established a registry of people who wish to be
notified. To be included in this registry for school year 2016-17, please complete the
form below and submit it to the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor at your school. Any
other questions you may have regarding the District’s pest management practices may
also be directed to Ted Birren at 847-718-7619.
School Pesticide Application Notification Program Registry
Please notify me, at least 48 hours in advance, when any pesticide applications will
occur on school property.

D214 PARENT NEWS Parents and Teachers Talk Technology at Conference: A group of local school districts collaborated in November to provide a half-‐day workshop for parents to understand how technology is changing the 21st century classroom. High School District #214, in partnership with Districts 21, 23, 25, 26, 57 and 59, hosted the ENGAGE 2015 Parent Technology Conference at John Hersey High School. Nearly 400 people registered for the conference, which offered parents an opportunity to hear directly from educators about the roles and implications of technology -‐ from cyber security and apps to social media safety, the possibilities of coding even at young ages, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education and supporting student learning at home. Parents learned how creativity and innovation in technology is advancing educational opportunities throughout District #214 and in local elementary districts, allowing students to connect with and learn from teachers, each other, and the world more than ever before. The conference was part of a continued effort to engage parents in the learning process. Breakfast Celebrates Industry Partners and Successes: In the last five years, District #214 students have logged more than 1.7 million hours in internships through partnerships with hundreds of business partners, helping them discover their future while still in high school. The District saluted those partners Wednesday, November 18 th at a breakfast that showcased student interns and thanked businesses for playing a role in student success. More than 100 partners from the 2015 calendar year were thanked. Dr. Alison Hilsabeck, Provost and Chief Academic Officer at National Louis University, Provided the keynote address. She called District 214’s program, “A Model for the Nation”. District 214’s Career Discovery External Experiences program matches students with business partners in fields that fuel their passion, from culinary arts and archite3cture to engineering, healthcare, and education. Internship experiences pair students with employers for as many as ten hours a week for a full semester or twenty hours a week for six summer weeks. Micro-‐internships provide opportunities for abbreviated experiences, with an objective of increased flexibility. District #214 hopes to have 3,000 students in internships by the 2016/17 school year, toward a goal of every student in the District completing some level of internship before graduation. Everyday Hero Campaign: Do you know a District #214 staff member who goes above and beyond? We are looking to recognize them as part of our continued 214 Everyday Hero project, with a goal of thanking and spotlighting the tremendous employees who go the extra mile for our schools and students. You can nominate heroes by giving them a public Twitter shoutout and using the #214Hero hashtag, or by emailing their story to our Hero inbox, at [email protected]. This academic year, we will profile select nominees in video vignettes on our District 214 YouTube page. We encourage you to join the conversation, and honor all who make a difference. March 2016
Dear Parent/Guardian,
New Immunization Requirement for the School year 2016-2017:
Every child entering the twelfth grade shall show proof of having received two
doses of meningococcal conjugate vaccine prior to entering the twelfth grade. The
first dose shall have been received on or after the 10th birthday, and the second dose
shall be at least eight weeks after the first dose. If the first dose is administered when the
child is 16 years of age or older, only one dose is required.
The requirements of this Section also apply to children who transfer into Illinois schools
from other states, regardless of the age or grade level at which the child transfers.
What does this mean to you and your student? Your student may have already received
the two doses of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine but it has not been specified on
their immunization form. Please ask your doctor if your student has received the two
meningococcal conjugate vaccine and have them provide the dates they were given and
a doctorʼs signature. If they have not received both doses, you are required to get this
vaccination for your child. Your child will be subject to exclusion as described in the
school code of Illinois. Please see attached letter from the Illinois Department of Public
Health.
Please complete by June 1, 2016 or contact the School Nurse if unable to complete
by that date.

Important Information
For Incoming 9th Grade Parents
If you have a religious exemption for vaccines, the nurse needs this form
completed before the first day of school or
your child will not be allowed to attend school
THIS FORM NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED BY YOUR PHYSICIAN
INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING ILLINOIS CERTIFICATE OF RELIGIOUS EXEMPTION TO REQUIRED IMMUNIZATIONS AND/OR EXAMINATIONS FORM Who may use the Certificate of Religious Exemption to Required Immunizations and/or Examinations Form: • Parents or legal guardians who are requesting a religious exemption to immunizations or examinations must use this form for students entering kindergarten, sixth, or ninth grades. • A separate form must be used for each child with a religious exemption enrolled to enter any public, charter, private or parochial preschool, kindergarten, elementary or secondary school. • This form may not be used for exemptions from immunizations and/or examination for personal or philosophical reasons. Illinois law does not allow for such exemptions. (See excerpts below from Public Act 099-‐0249 enacted August 3, 2015 at page bottom). When use of this form becomes required: October 16, 2015 How to complete the Certificate of Religious Exemption to Required Immunizations and/or Examinations Form: • Complete the Parent/Guardian sections, which include key information about the student and the school the student will be entering, and the immunizations or examinations for which religious exemptions is being requested. Provide a statement of religious belief(s) for each vaccination/examination requested. • The form must be signed by the child’s parent or legal guardian AND the child’s health care provider* responsible for performing the child’s health examination. • Submit the completed form to local school authority on or before October 15th of the school year or by an earlier enrollment date established by a school district. Religious Exemption from Immunizations and/or Examination Form Process: • The local school authority is responsible for determining whether the information supplied on the Certificate of Religious Exemption to Required Immunizations and/or Examinations Form constitutes a valid religious objection. • The local school authority shall inform the parent or legal guardian, at the time that the exemption is presented, of exclusion procedures, should there be an outbreak of one or more diseases from which the student is not protected, in accordance with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) rules, Control of Communicable Diseases Code (77 III. Adm. Code 690). • Exempting a child from health, dental, or eye examination does not exempt the child from participation in the program of physical education training provided in Section 27-‐5 through 27-‐7 of the Illinois School Code (105 ILCS 5/27-‐5 through 105 ILCS 5/27-‐7). A separate request for exemption from physical education, if desired, would need to be presented. Excerpt from Public Act 099-0249 enacted August 3, 2015: Children of parents or legal guardians who object to health, dental or eye examinations or any part thereof, or to immunizations or to vision and hearing screening tests on religious grounds shall not be required to undergo the examinations or immunizations if the parents or legal guardians present to the appropriate local school authority a signed Certificate of Religious Exemption detailing the grounds for objection and the specific immunizations and/or examinations to which they object. The grounds for objection must set forth the specific religious belief(s) that conflict with the examination, immunization or other medical intervention. The certificate will be signed by the parent or legal guardian to confirm their awareness of the school’s exclusion policies in the case of a vaccine preventable disease outbreak or exposure. The certificate must also be signed by the child’s health care provider responsible for performing the child’s examination for entry into kindergarten, sixth or ninth grade. This signature affirms that the provider educated the parent or legal guardian about the benefits of immunization and the health risks to the student and to the community from the communicable diseases for which immunization is required in Illinois. The religious objection provided need not be directed by the tenets of an established religious organization. However, general philosophical or moral reluctance to allow physical examinations, eye examinations, immunizations, vision and hearing screening or dental examinations will not provide a sufficient basis for an exception to statutory requirements. The local school authority is responsible for determining if the content of the Certificate of Religious Exemption constitutes a valid religious objection. The local school authority shall inform the parent or legal guardian of exclusion procedures in accordance with IDPH’s rules, Control of Communicable Diseases Code (77 III. Adm. Code 690) at the time the objection is presented. EGHS Parent Newsletter

2016 POST PROM
Elk Grove High School’s Prom and Post Prom events will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016. This
year’s Post Prom event will be held at Pinstripes Bowling, Bocce, Bistro in South Barrington,
Illinois.
Students attending the Post Prom event will depart The Belvedere on Alexis Luxury Tours coach
buses at approximately 11 p.m. and arrive at Pinstripes at approximately 11:30 p.m. The Post
Prom event at Pinstripes will run from 11:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., where the students will enjoy
unlimited bowling (20 luxury lanes), indoor and outdoor bocce courts, DJ entertainment and
dancing, and access to the outdoor heated patio with fire pit. Delicious food stations will offer hot
entrees, desserts and beverages throughout the evening. EGHS administration, staff members,
and contracted licensed security guards will be present the entire evening to chaperone the
event. Buses will depart Pinstripes at approximately 2:30 a.m. and arrive at The Belvedere at
approximately 3:00 a.m.
Ticket sales will be held at EGHS on Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. for seniors
only and from 10 a.m. to Noon for seniors and juniors. The cost of the Post Prom ticket is $30 per
person or $60 per couple. The Post Prom Permission Form and additional ticket information will
be mailed home via a separate mailing; information will also be available on the website.
Please encourage your student to attend the Post Prom event at Pinstripes! We are one of two
high schools remaining in District 214 that continue to host a Post Prom event. We believe a
substance-free, well-chaperoned event is a better alternative to unchaperoned celebrations in
small groups, where, too often, illegal substances and alcohol are available.
Financial Update
Thank you to all our families that have supported our fundraisers! However, the ongoing need of
financial support is critical to the success of this event. To keep the price affordable for all
students, we strive to substantially reduce the total cost per ticket by approximately 50 percent.
Our fundraising efforts and the financial donations from our families and community businesses
help to defer the cost. This is where we need your help. We are asking all of our EGHS families to
consider a donation to Post Prom. Whether your child will be attending Post Prom this year or
next, by donating to this year’s Post Prom activity, you are ensuring the future success of this
important event.
Please return the enclosed Post Prom Donation Form with your cash or check donation.
Thank you for your support!

The Elk Grove High School Post Prom event will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016 at Pinstripes
Bowling, Bocce, Bistro in South Barrington. All donations received are used to offset the cost per
student for the event, which includes bus transportation, cost for gaming at Pinstripes, food, drinks,
DJ, and security. In past years, thanks to the generosity of Post Prom supporters, approximately half
the cost of each student has been paid for by the Post Prom Committee through fundraising and
donations, therefore, significantly decreasing the ticket cost for our students.
Please help us continue our tradition of a fun, safe, economical Post Prom event for our students.
