S
alvador Dali coined the words “An elegant woman
is a woman who despises you and has no hair
under her arms.” In our much less surreal — and
real — world, this of course short-changes what
elegance is or what it should be.
As Solitaire Magazine’s publisher, I get bombarded daily with press
releases, stories, blogs, newsletters, and just about anything else ever
written or said about jewellery. Almost all describe what they claim are
‘elegant’ pieces. Sadly, that is less and less the case. Instead, I see more
vulgarity. More Kardashianism, and less creativity. More screaming, and
less substance. And more uses of words like ‘bold’, ‘daring’, ‘audacious’
— or my favourite dislike, ‘edgy’.
Elegance is something else. I shall make no attempt here to define
what it is or ought to be. Much more talented and stylish people than
me have done that at length. Elegance is that elusive a quality, that rare.
But what I do know is that what is increasingly touted as elegance on
the media and the web is certainly something else. Fashion perhaps.
But not elegance.
My appeal to you as reader, and to our industry friends everywhere,
is to be more careful with the use of that precious word. To thrive
towards achieving elegance, rather than simply claiming it. True
jewellers are artists at heart, and they will know what I am talking
about. They are driven by their passions, rather than their bankers,
and by the idea of creating something that will stand the test of time.
Brand managers, on the other hand, are tasked with selling often rather
bland collections that have to appeal to the widest possible worldwide
audience. Not much room for true elegance there, I’m afraid.
Please allow me to conclude by wishing you a most happy and
elegant holiday season. Celebrate in style with family and loved ones.
Wear your best gowns, and your most beloved jewellery. Ignore what
every one else thinks you should wear or carry. I have seen ladies in
Asia’s tribal regions more elegant than many a label queen I encounter
on a weekly basis at some branded event or other.
Be yourself. Be elegant. And be free.
Happy Holidays.

The rarefied geometry and sculptural

timepiece, the white gold dial is set using the
most complex of all gem-setting techniques
called invisible setting. Crafted in three
dimensions, it forms a gently undulating
landscape that unleashes the sparkle of
the stones. Adding to the complexity of the
design are the baguette-cut diamonds which
get progressively smaller and draw the eye
hypnotically to the centre of the dial, where
in place of a second hand, a star appears
spinning on its axis while serving as a
movement-operating indicator.
In the Glacier timepiece, Harry Winston
sought to create a fluid, graceful diamond
watch using only baguette-cut diamonds.
Taking four months to design and more
than 1,000 hours to set, master craftsmen
used 386 baguette-cut diamonds in 12
different sizes and thin wires of platinum to
meticulously weave an open-worked watch
bracelet, so supple that it lays against the

carats set totally in-house,
will ever be made.
Another excellent
design in the
collection pays
tribute to Harry
Winston
and his
beloved wife, Edna. The Mrs Winston High
Jewellery Timepiece reflects the perfect
marriage of Edna’s personal style and
Harry Winston’s famous saying: “If I could,
I would attach diamonds directly onto a
woman’s skin”. Handcrafted in platinum,
the timepiece is set with more than 47 carats
of the world’s finest quality diamonds. The
white gold dial is set with 144 brilliant-cut
diamonds and housed within a striking
marquise-shaped platinum case, outlined
with 32 baguette-cut diamonds. More than
200 fancy-shaped diamonds adorn the
bracelet, creating an intricate shimmering
pattern with baguette-cut diamonds along
the outer edges and a mixture of pear,
marquise, and brilliant-cut diamonds
appearing to float along delicate bars of
platinum.
Straddling the line between gemmology
and horology, Harry Winston’s High
Jewellery Timepieces reconcile the
dichotomy of art and functionality with
seamless brilliance and intoxicating beauty,
and signal the moment when a watch
becomes a jewel.

With a slightly darker, more dramatic
look, Sutra Jewels has portrayed a pair of
sunbursts in 18k black gold set with a total
of 7ct rose-cut diamonds. This particular
diamond cut allows for a fashionable

touch of vintage to the jewellery.

This between-the-fingers ring from Yoko

large South Sea cultured pearl, adorned with
two stars set with 0.21ct diamonds. While the
lustre of the cultured pearl is sure to keep the

sets off the ring’s glamour. A real keeper, the

Sandra Bullock on
turning 50, loving life,

J ane
ne of the most loved
celebrities in Hollywood,
actress/producer Sandra
Bullock is funny and
elegant at the same
time. In the fleeting and
flamboyant world of the entertainment
industry, her grace and humility remain
genuine. The Oscar winner, who just turned
50 this year, has managed to balance career
and personal life. She mostly spends time
in Austin and New Orleans where she feels
most at home, and her life is exclusively
centred around her son Louis. On occasion,
though, she shows up at Hollywood events,
where she gets to dress up to the ninth. To
a cocktail party at the Toronto Film Festival,
for example, she wore Martin Katz diamond
chandelier earrings set in blackened 18k
white gold with 196 diamonds.
“Sandra is one of my favourite actresses
whose humour and light-heartedness are
the perfect complement to her grace and
elegance,” said Martin Katz. He has been

dressing Sandra since the beginning of both
of their careers. “Her style and sophistication
embody the spirit of our brand.” But Sandra
loves to explore other jewellers, too. At the
Oscars in 2013, she set a trend with Harry
Winston’s diamond cluster brooch she
wore in her hair. She also wore diamond
ear studs, and a platinum and diamond ring.
A few years back, also at the Oscars, she
complemented a lace Elie Saab gown with
Harry Winston’s round diamond studs that
she let her son Louis pick for her.
YOU LOOK GREAT DRESSED UP, BUT
YOU ALSO LOOK GREAT DRESSED
DOWN. WHAT WOULD WE FIND IN
YOUR CLOSET IF WE COULD HAVE A
PEEK?
My favourite pieces are the ones that I don’t
wear on an average day. I have about eight
pieces from Etro, and they hang in the closet
because it’s not appropriate to wear them
to drop a child off to pre-school. But my
favourite jeans, T-shirts, and sweaters — they
are pretty much what you would see me in
on a daily basis.
HOW ABOUT THE CLOTHES YOU
WEAR WHEN YOU GO TO EVENTS?
Oh, fashion will always be relevant no matter
how much you say it’s not. You know it’s
something playful. It’s something to dream
about and aspire to. It’s few and far between
when I get to throw on my fun dresses. But
I love well-made things. I love couture. I
41
STYLE
love looking at the runway and marvelling
how does McQueen constantly create an art,
a spectacle, a show, something that makes
you wonder how craftsmen put it together.
You know it’s just not applicable to life. But
I’m the person who will go into a closetful
of clothes and shoes and have absolutely
nothing to wear. I think that’s a pretty
universal problem for most women. We
can never have enough black dresses;
never enough cute black flats or
sandals.
AND DO YOU HAVE
A DRAWER OF SILK
NIGHTGOWNS?
I have terribly oversized cheetah
pyjamas that are actually men’s
cheetah flannel pyjamas. My
son thinks they’re brilliant
because I look like a very large
cheetah entering his room.
They are easy to manoeuvre
around in. If you get something
on them you don’t panic, and
you know they’re appropriate
to be in around a small child.
Really cute, slinky things
just don’t suit my lifestyle.
TO KEEP A FIGURE
LIKE THAT, DO
YOU RELIGIOUSLY
EXERCISE AND DIET
ON A DAILY BASIS.
I’ve been an athlete since
childhood. So, sometimes,
I rely on my body a lot more than it’s able
to execute. But I love it. I’m always training
or doing some form of exercise four or five
times a week. I just feel restless if I don’t.
And when you have a three-year-old who
runs a lot, who is hanging off things, you’d
better get up and do your training so you
can keep up with him. As for diet, I love
food, but I eat well. The best thing to do
is to have fun and be active all the time. I
know that I feel better when I’m that way.
YOU JUST TURNED 50. IS IT A BIG
DEAL AND DOES IT MEAN ANY
CHANGES IN YOUR LIFESTYLE?
I know it’s happening. I’m there for
the day, but I also wanted to be the one
person who’s like, what’s the big deal? I
had the best birthday ever on this one
just because of what we chose to do and
the friends that we chose to be with. And
so I’m easing into it. There were a lot of
things that fell into place in my head and
in life. I was so glad I got there because
I’m finally here now and everyone just got
off my back. You know what I mean? It
was almost like a release in an odd way. I
was really happy it happened and what’s
changed. Every day things change, but you
just you don’t care about a lot of things. I
don’t care anymore about so many things
that I cared about when I was 30. It makes
me really focus on the few things that I
absolutely love and adore. I know a lot
more. I’ve learned a lot. I’m not naïve
anymore and I just feel really grateful and
happy.

AND WHAT’S THE BAGGAGE YOU’VE
LEFT BEHIND?
It’s all the things that I took on that really
had no relevance to me. All the things you’re
supposed to be, how you’re supposed to
look, how you’re supposed to act. I was very
easily influenced. If I see someone else doing
something amazing I would be like, I need to
be doing that. I didn’t value my own worth.
I didn’t value my own journey. I really had
a lot of self-doubt, and I think that’s where
the comedy comes from. A lot of times I
would just do that to level the playing field,
but I didn’t know exactly what it was that I
liked or didn’t like until a lot of things were
taken away. There are some things you are
not going to get back, there are some things
that are inevitable. They’re inevitably going

now than I did 20, 30 years ago. So I would
not go back because I was not as happy
with what I had and didn’t have then as I
am today. And is that age? I don’t know. Is
that good therapy? Sure, some of it has to
do with it. Or maybe it’s just learning how
to let go.

that swish against the hand. Dazzling rings,
each cleverly crafted to adorn the upper

jewels beneath the nails. Diamondencrusted snake earrings
designed to sit at the edge
of the entire ear lobe, their
heads appearing to caress
the wearer’s cheek, while
their tails hang off the
lower part of the ear.
These are among the
unusual creations of rising star
designer Noor Al Fardan from Doha. She
took her first steps to fame in 2011 when
she designed and made an exceptional piece
for Lady Gaga for the release of her music
album Born this Way. “The opportunity to
design for Lady Gaga allowed me to express
myself and to push the boundaries of fine
jewellery making. At the same time, she gave
me the courage to launch Noudar. I had
been stalling the launch, but watching her
dance on stage, uncaring about what anyone
thought of her, gave me the ultimate push to
launch my brand.”
Today, Noudar has a following of
jewellery lovers who want fine jewellery
that is different and daring. Noor says her
collections take inspiration from the noble
heritage of Arabic and Islamic culture,
particularly drawing on Omani patterns
and henna designs. “When I was younger,
my sisters and I enjoyed covering just two
fingers in henna. That’s where the idea for
the double rings began,” Noor recalls. These
rings have now become her signature pieces
and are enjoying popularity among fashionforward customers. Recently, the brand
collaborated with Welsh fashion designer
Julien Macdonald for his Spring-Summer
2015 show at London
Fashion Week. Among
the highlights was a white
gold and diamond double
ring that was paired with a
diamond-embroidered wedding
dress. Other items in the collection
included elaborate ring and bracelet
combinations adorning the entire hand and
long lace rings with gemstone tassels.
Noor’s love affair with fine jewellery
started when she was a little girl. Her father,
a well-known jewellery retailer in Doha,
encouraged her from early childhood
onwards to accompany him to jewellery
exhibitions. He let her sit in on discussions
with suppliers of jewellery and watches for
his store, Alfardan. It was here that Noor
learnt the secret language of jewellery and
the inherent seduction of each piece. “After
each meeting, I would sketch my favourite
pieces, altering them in ways that I thought
would make the jewellery look better. By
the time I was 13, I was already designing
personal pieces for friends, family, and
myself,” she recalls.

But the true magic of fine jewellery was
revealed to her during an internship at
Chopard. Here she learnt the nuances of
fine jewellery-making and the importance of
“creating statement pieces that are intricate
in design and at the same time fresh and
appealing to customers.”
“There are a lot of dramatic pieces in the
world of costume jewellery, but far less in
fine jewellery.” She says her dream is to fill
this void in fine jewellery. Among her current
favourites is the sapphire lace ring inspired
by necklaces her mother loved wearing
to parties. “I was fascinated by how those
statement necklaces transformed her entire
look. My personal challenge was to compact
the glamour and mood of those necklaces
into rings that I could wear on my fingers.”
Noor works at keeping Noudar’s designs
young in spirit while ensuring they are
sophisticated and precious. She says she
was always fascinated with watches and the
mechanisms inherent to the art of watchmaking. This fascination with watch-making
in turn influenced the way her jewels are
crafted, incorporating comfort, movement,
and flexibility into each piece.
Her collections take
inspiration from the noble
heritage of Arabic and Islamic
culture, particularly drawing
on Omani patterns and
henna designs
48
She works with a range of gold colours —
white, yellow, and rose. But for more daring
pieces, she uses oxidised or black rhodium
plating to provide nuanced contrasts with
white or black diamonds as well as some
fancy colours. Sapphires, rubies, and
emeralds add precious colour and glamour.
“My favourite jewel is the pearl. I have been
working on a pearl collection, but I am
treading very cautiously and want to take my
time before launching this collection.”
Initially the jewels were produced in
Valencia, but now a dedicated workshop in
Qatar is working on her collections. “It has
been my dream to create a truly Qatari brand
that people would recognise
internationally. I wanted
everything, including the
manufacturing, to be done
in Qatar.”

Audemars Piguet and its legacy of
creating artisanal ladies’ timepieces
A
fter surviving two
world wars, the
stock market crash
of the 1930s, and
the ‘quartz crisis’ of the 1970s, Audemars
Piguet has remained one of the world’s most
iconic horological brands. By continuously
innovating, honouring tradition, and
dedicating itself to quality craftsmanship,
its timepieces have become symbols of
the finest level of watchmaking, with
complicated movements, artisanal designs,
and technical feats.
Case in point, the luxury steel watch
that was Royal Oak, an angular and bold
timepiece that stood out from all other
brands at the height of the quartz era.
Another factor to its long-term survival is
its ability to cater to the needs and wants
of the discerning public — ladies included.
Women’s watches were often made by men
for men, and were therefore more aesthetic
in nature, often decorated with gemstones,
enamel or other decorative forms. Even if
52
they had complications, companies usually
turned them into daintier, “prettier” models
of larger men’s watches, made to fit on
smaller wrists.
While this suited women of older
generations, modern women demanded
more as they grew in prominence in the
workplace and society — bigger, bolder
styles, along with a greater appreciation
for the mechanical movements driving the
watches. The ability to see these trends and
demands helped the Manufacture maintain
its success in the horological world.
Right from the start, Audemars Piguet
has crafted ladies’ timepieces that combined
watchmaking and gemsetting traditions,
offering women the best of both worlds.
Formed in 1875 by two friends Jules-Louis
Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet, their
forte was making accurate watch movements
and hand-made masterpieces, which were
also channelled into their ladies’ timepieces.
Some were elaborate expressions of art and
jewellery, while others were complicated

mechanical marvels in their own right,
with specially developed, hand-finished
movements.
One of the oldest pieces is a round
watch-brooch made by the Manufacture
in 1894, but marketed by Tiffany. The
sinuous lines of the brooch is reminiscent
of the Art Nouveau movement during the
period, decorated with blue enamel, gold,
and diamonds. The watch itself boasts
more than hours and minutes — it is also
a minute repeater. Audemars Piguet also
made some exceptional jewellery watches,
such as the 1926 Art Deco-inspired watch
with baguette-cut diamonds, and the 1927
Tutti Frutti Haute Joaillerie watch. The latter
is a unique piece made in partnership with
Parisian jeweller Equivillon Lafon & Cie,
featuring hand-carved, multi-coloured
gemstones, and the smallest movement the
Manufacture had ever produced.
Fast forward to 1960s and 1970s,
Audemars Piguet began creating ovalshaped watches for women — a precursor
to today’s iconic Millenary collection. These
early models also incorporated gemstones
but were bolder and larger than typical
women’s watches. Examples include the
1971 Elliptical bracelet watch with Tiger’s
Eye, comprising oval-shaped panels of
the stone within 18k yellow gold braided
border. The detailed hand-finishing through
the case and the extra-thin movement
showcased the skill of the watchmaker and
craftsmen. Similarly, the 1970 Horizontal
Elliptical watch featured an extrathin calibre 2003 under a slate
grey dial.
The Millenary collection,
originally unveiled in 1995, is
characterised by a signature oval
case and off-centred dial. Often, it is a
complicated one, made for the discerning
female watch connoisseur who appreciates
beauty and technique. Highlights have
included the 2007 Millenary Starlit Sky
watch with moon phase and the sporty yet
stylish 2010 Millenary Chronograph. The
basis of each Millenary is seen in its soft
curves and distinctive
proportions, blending
elegance, modernity,
contemporary style, and
mechanical finesse.
The 2015 Millenary
collection is not only an
homage to women, but a
celebration of 20 years of
this unique design. The
three new watches feature
an all-new in-housemade movement Calibre
5201 with small seconds
indication and 54 hours of
power reserve. Comprising
its signature off-centred dial and elliptical
case, each timepiece has open-worked dial
that allows for viewing of the mainplate and
certain meticulously finished movement
parts. There are the pink and white gold
versions, decorated with a diamond bezel,
lugs, and sapphire cabochon crown. Then
there is a grander white gold version with
diamonds on the dial, case, case sides, and
lugs, along with blued hands and blue
sapphire cabochon on the crown. All feature
anti-reflective sapphire crystals and alligatorleather straps. And from here, the quest
continues.

A
time of ‘great optimism and economic entrepreneurship’ — Italy in the
‘70s was rife with business opportunities. The country’s economy was
showing flourish, with its middle and upper classes growing. With it
came the blossoming of Italian luxury brands, including, of course, fine
jewellery houses. Standing out amongst the branded giants of the era was ZYDO, a family-owned
Italian jewellery house that went on to make a name for itself on the international jewellery stage.
For Davide Zybert, the elegant and amiable family patriarch and founder of ZYDO, the
jewellery business came as a natural choice. His father was the founder and president of one of
the biggest gold jewellery companies in post-war Europe. “Jewellery manufacturing was in his
blood,” shared Jack Zybert, one of Mr Zybert’s three sons, who now manage the business. Not
surprisingly, it is also in Jack’s and his two brothers’ — Eli and Roberto — blood. Founded in
1972, ZYDO is one of the few Italian jewellery brands that still hosts 100% of its production in

that history. The past informs and shapes
the future of each of our collections. The
third generation in the jewellery business
is acutely and intimately aware of all of
ZYDO’s past creations, with elegant lines,
superior craftsmanship, and remarkable
stones. In studying those designs and
expanding and innovating on them, the new
generation is engaging in a sort of imaginary
conversation through time with the previous
ones to craft ever more stunning jewels.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE
ADVANTAGES OF BEING A FAMILYRUN JEWELLERY BRAND IN TERMS
OF DESIGNS AND MANAGEMENT?
The most important advantages are our
personal attachment to the brand, the
consistency of quality and craftsmanship
over time, and the handed-down knowledge
through generations in the same business.
WHO DOES THE DESIGNS IN THE
FAMILY, AND HOW DOES EACH OF
YOUR ROLE COMPLEMENT EACH
OTHER?
ZYDO has a talented team of designers that
are managed by Roberto Zybert, the director
of production. However, all of the members
of the family are involved in the designing
process. Jack and Eli Zybert, who manage
ZYDO’s operations in Europe and Asia and
the Americas, respectively, are particularly
instrumental in steering the design process
based on market indications, fashion trends,
and, of course, customers’ preference.
WHAT ARE THE THREE MAIN
THINGS THAT YOU CONSIDER WHEN
DESIGNING A PIECE?
The most important factor is our history.
We want to make sure that every piece of
jewellery that we produce is consistent with
the extraordinary creations that we are known
for. We want to make sure that it possesses
the qualities characteristic of our jewellery
— superior craftsmanship, remarkable stone
quality, and outstanding design. Then we are
careful to consider current fashion trends and
consumer’s tastes. Finally, we need to make
sure that all of our designs are perfectly crafted
so that they can be worn easily, comfortably,
and continuously so for years to come.
57
INTERVIEW
HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT
EACH PIECE ALWAYS HAS THAT
DISTINCTIVE FINE ITALIAN
QUALITY?
The essential factor is to host all of the
stages of production entirely and exclusively
in Italy. The craftsmanship of the Italian
artisan is the result of the experience and
knowledge that span many generations. It
cannot be reproduced exactly anywhere
else in the world. Additionally, to make sure
that every ZYDO item is consistent with
our desired level of excellence, we run it
through two separate quality controls. The
first happens right after the mounting is
produced, and the second after the jewel is
complete. The result is a jewel that will be
worn and enjoyed for decades.
PLEASE TAKE US THROUGH
THE PROCESS OF EACH DESIGN,
FROM CONCEPTUALISATION TO
PRODUCTION.
The production of a ZYDO jewel is the
result of a long creative process. It all starts
with the design team. Their inspiration
stems from their flair, design ability, and
the direction and conversations with the
sale’s team. Their designs are evaluated
by Roberto, and once perfected they are
presented to the model maker. A model
is then produced and modified until the
desired form and the outstanding quality
of the mounting are achieved. ZYDO’s
gemmologists select and match the stones
to the design and the model. The setters
apply the selected stones to the mounting.
The jewel is once more checked for quality,
and it is then polished and finished. Finally,
each and every piece is again inspected by
Mr Zybert for the ultimate seal of approval,
ensuring that every ZYDO jewel is truly a
work of art.
“Asian women are very savvy and
knowledgeable consumers”
A LOT OF ASIAN WOMEN LOVE YOUR
PIECES. WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE
THE THINGS THAT DRAW THEM TO
YOUR DESIGNS?
Asian women are very savvy and
knowledgeable consumers. They are deeply
aware of what constitutes a product with
superior and lasting craftsmanship, as well
as the intrinsic value that a jewel made with
higher quality stones commands. Therefore,
the qualities that ZYDO instils in each of its
creations, namely, outstanding craftsmanship,
innovative design, and remarkable stone
quality, are exactly what Asian women are
rightly looking for.

their pieces so much that she decided to
stock them in the store. “This allowed us to
produce more pieces and create a bigger
collection,” says Sonia. “We went to a few
more stores — Couture Lab and Frost in
London, Le Bon Marche — and this is how
Gaydamak started.”
The business quickly expanded overseas.
“We ventured out to Russia, then Europe,
then the Middle East. We are in Paris,
London, St Tropez, Miami, the fashion
hubs,” shares Sonia. “People want to
wear Gaydamak because we are cool and
different.” She reveals that it took the team
close to two years to develop the hand
bracelet technically, for comfort and visual
appeal, and also for the right sizing. “For
another three years, it was our main focus.
We now have about 40 different designs, and
the collection is still growing.”

jewellery designer by

for an unconventional piece formed in
their minds. The result was a unique hand

The first prototypes were worn
by Katia and Sonia and shown to
family and friends. “The reaction
was so positive that we thought,
‘why not?’”says Sonia. From
then on, the creative juices just
kept flowing. The pair, who grew

Paris, and Tel Aviv, founded their eponymous
label in 2009, with the aim of designing
igning
fashion-forward pieces for confident
dent and
powerful women with an enviable sense off
style. An array of curiosities, from a military
medal found in a Palais-Royale store, a
swatch of vintage Russian lace, or antique
books became inspirations that formed the
motifs of their first designs.
Today, Gaydamak pieces are modern
reinterpretations of nature, Oriental patterns,
and ancient architecture. The sisters met

“Our goal is to embellish women to the

Sonia’s advice for her first-time clients is to

For the Gaydamak sisters, standing out is

respect them. But it’s a shame that people

Vienna, Austria’s city of dreams, has
inspired many artists. Frey Wille is known for
its artistic fire enamel jewellery. Committed
to art, the collections are inspired by various
art-historical themes, taking inspirations
from the works of renowned European
artists and giving them contemporary artistic
interpretation. Here, one can find various
gifts for women along with intricately
enamelled accessories for men, like cufflinks,
tie-pins, and pens. “Christmas is about
showing love and gratefulness to those who
stand by our side throughout the whole
year,” enthuses CEO and owner Dr Friedrich
Wille. “Every year we ask ourselves, how can
I put a smile on the face of those I love
by giving them a felicitous surprise?
How can that be something
different from last year? Our
handcrafted jewellery pieces
with designs of striking colours
framed in 18k gold and sparkling

While in Europe, one cannot miss
Italy for its bold stance in fine jewellery.
Damiani, one of the leading Italian
jewellers, excels in creativity and design
down to the smallest of pieces. Their
Metropolitan Dream collection defines
the feeling of living in the big city —
diamonds studded among building-like
blocks. The yellow gold cufflinks exude
power and fit best in a huge multinational
boardroom. The Eden collection, their
latest offering, gives a minimalistic feel
to the most famous Italian motif — the
snake. “Our jewels are contemporary yet
classical,” shares Mr Giorgio Damiani,
Vice President of Damiani Group.
“For someone special, it’s important to
choose an innovative gift like our new
collection, Eden. Elegant and seductive,
this collection aspires to the design of
the Damiani bracelet of the same name,
winner of the Diamond International
Award, the Oscar of jewellery. The
collection features the snake, which has

o create ladies’ timepieces, many watchmakers
simply went for a size reduction of their men’s
models to fit the ladies’ wrists. Add some
gemstones and diamonds, and the off to the
showroom it went — a practice dubbed as ‘shrink it & pink it’.
On the other end of the spectrum, though, there are watchmakers
who create movements specifically for ladies, recognising a
growing demand by increasingly sophisticated and well-heeled
female consumers.
Christophe Claret is one of them, capturing the hearts of
women with creativity, aesthetics, and mechanical virtuosity.
Its highly acclaimed Margot watch line was an original
playful timepiece that allowed the wearer to find out if ‘he
loves me, he loves not’. Now the watchmaker presents the
Marguerite, adding to the complications exclusively devoted
to women. The Marguerite charms not with the love-lifepredicting function, but with a delightful hidden message.
In addition to the Arabic numerals at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock,
the dial presents a second display, where one presses on the
pusher at 2 o’clock to make the numbers disappear and to reveal
the phrase “Il m’aime passionnément” (French for “He loves me
passionately”). The changeover of the two dials is achieved by
superimposing two disks with a matrix layer over the printed
mother-of-pearl dial. In case the wearer misses the “He loves me.
He loves me not” feature, she can flip the watch to the other side
where the game is incorporated at its caseback. The rubies on the
oscillating weight in the form of flower petals declare whether it’s
a “yes” or “no”.
Telling the time is an equally charming affair, thanks to two
butterflies filled with coloured Super-LumiNova — a darker
female one on the white lacquered daisy petal displaying the
hours and a lighter male one on the pistil displaying the minutes.
The case is available in white or rose gold with two newly
invented types of setting, the ‘flake’ and ‘champagne’, which
give the diamonds the effect of sparkling bubbles. The watch is
powered by a self-winding Manufacture movement whose double
barrel ensures an impressive 72-hour power reserve. Each of the
four versions is limited to only 30 pieces.

deep shade of magenta. The colour is rich and
intense, and a perfect complement to the sparkle
of diamonds. Still encompassing the collection’s
classic circular dial, the bezel is elongated to
create more lines, and perhaps to increase
the surface area on which 162 baguettes rest.
Its beauty does not only lie above the surface.
Beneath is a manual Calibre 215 mechanical
movement, capable of a minimum of 44 hours
power reserve. A precise same shade of magenta
leather strap completes the timepiece.

elicate and easy on the eyes, the colour
pink depicts compassion, love, and healing.
No wonder ladies are drawn to this sweet
hue. And when paired with sophisticated
complications, pink packs a pretty yet powerful wallop in
ladies’ timepieces. Allow these rose-coloured horological
masterpieces — from pastel, bright, to intense — to satisfy
your inner pink lover at this festive season.
Over the years, Audemars Piguet has
created more feminine versions of the
Royal Oak pieces, using diamonds,
rose gold, and lighter colours.This
year, they present a pink Ladies’
Royal Oak Quartz, covering the
entire surface of the 18k white
gold case in nothing but fine
gems. Almost 300 baguettes,
totalling approximately 15.92
carats, encrust the watch’s
dial, bezel, band end, and lugs.
Marking the hours are 12 dainty
pink sapphires, while pulling
together the diamond watch is a
hand-stitched pink alligator strap.
Within beats the House’s Calibre 2716
movement.

Omega
Once upon a time, innovation breakthroughs
were largely reserved for men’s timepieces, while
the ladies’ market went undeveloped. Omega
pioneered the cause to provide beautiful and
accurate timepieces for women, and thus created
the Ladymatic. A modern remake, this piece has
kept the orignal signature style and progressive
spirit. The classic round case is crafted out of
stainless steel and features a pink mother-of-pearl
dial, surrounded by a diamond-set bezel. A pink
satin-brushed leather strap softens the sharpness
of the silver steel.Within the 34-mm casing is the
self-winding Co-Axial calibre 8520 mechanism,
capable of a 50-hour power reserve.

Roger Dubuis
While having very little ladies’ timepieces
to call their own, Roger Dubuis has certainly
won the women’s hearts with their latest
offerings. The Velvet collection has come together
uniformly, each distinctly similar, yet unique in its
own ways. The circular dial has since become a
classic, displaying the signature sleek and stylised
Roman numerals as hour indicators. Featuring petite
diamonds on the inner bezel of a rose gold case, this
piece, though not as opulent as its predecessors, is
classically coloured and suited for everyday wear.

estive season
promises to be
glitzy and fanciful.
And neck adornmentt is a winning
trend — from elaborate chokers
hokers to
multi-layered necklaces and delicate
elicate lariats.
Several necklace styles are converging
ing this
season, but chokers and lariats are stepping
ping
up to accessorise dipping necklines, bareshoulders, and even open-back dresses
and tops. While chokers are trending and
elaborate styles are a hot favourite, the
versatile lariat is equally popular because of
the many ways it can be worn.
The Boho-chic choker style worn at
the base of the throat or higher is a strong
favourite for casual glam. However, not to be
outdone in this style, lariats are being adapted
to wrap around the throat or are tied higher
so that the trim nestles at the base of the neck,
lending their weight to the ‘back-lace’ trend.
Viewed from the front, the style appears
as a fashion-forward choker, but the long
glitzy strands that dangle behind the neck
sensuously accessorise open-back or back-less
dresses. In this style, the lariat scores high.
Chokers this season hark back to the ‘70s,
with some of the styles invoking Princess
Diana’s enchanting looks of the early ‘90s. The
most iconic was the large sapphire brooch
(a wedding gift from the Queen Mother)
she had remade into a seven-strand pearl
and sapphire choker. Henn of London now
created several choker styles that capture a
similar mood. Among them is a multi-strand
Mandarin garnet bead choker, its intense
orange shades highlighted by diamond-set
rondels and an enamel and diamond centre
piece. Another festive piece is a faceted bead,
black spinel multi-strand choker with a
purple tourmaline centre piece — its intense
colour enhanced by diamonds and shades of
purple enamel.

Neck cuffs, some open in front, are another
exciting new choker trend. A particularly
captivating example is from Stephen
Webster’s Magnipheasant collection — an
18k white gold plumage collar open at the
front and elaborately set with tanzanite,
aquamarine, and white diamonds. Another
festive Magnipheasant example is an
18k white gold choker with fine pave-set
sapphires in mixed colours.
Meanwhile, a new lariat style packing a
punch is the flexible coil, with the full length
88
of the lariat wrapped around the neck
many times, occasionally finished off with a
bejewelled snake head that adds edgy, festive
allure. Lariats also appear to be winning
the race in pearl styles: long ropes of pearls
that can be knotted into different styles
creating choker looks, looped Y necklaces, or
seductive back-laces. Coleman Douglas has
numerous examples of pearl lariats, from
single strand ropes in a range of colours
of pearls to multi-strands mixed with
gemstones for an added oomph.
Lariats also score high in the ‘simple
glam’ stakes, and the Boucheron Pompom
lariat is a winner for its sensuous, white gold
elegance set ablaze with square, baguette,
and round diamonds. However, Tiffany’s
Bow choker may just about to beat it for
simplicity and grace. Evocative of the
slender thread that was tied around a finger
to remember something — or someone
— the Tiffany Bow is created to represent
a charming symbol of important ties.
Delicately expressed in 18k rose gold with
0.86 carats of round brilliant diamonds, the
bow is knotted onto a slender choker.
In the ‘extreme glam’ stakes, chokers
are on top. Case in point: the rose gold
and diamond Chantecler Galli choker,
comprising a pattern of cockerels in
decreasing sizes, is enchanting — so is
Damiani’s 1920s’ style Charleston Collier,
representing a delicate feather, its details
picked out with fine pave of 1,000 diamonds
and 13 larger diamond ‘drops’.
The verdict? For sheer versatility and a
simple captivating look, the lariat gets our
nod. But if it’s head-turning, eye-popping
glamour you are after this festive season,
then by all means, go with the choker.

O
ur planet has created and yielded an amazing and
still growing array of gemstones. Yet, only a few were
elevated to jewellery stardom, such as diamonds,
sapphires, emeralds, and rubies. With those shining
brightly in the discriminating world of high jewellery, the quest
for creative and financial success is motivating jewellery designers
to explore new materials and gemstone diversity. Chrysoprase,
spessartite garnet, peridot, tanzanite, and morganite are starting to
gain attention and are capturing hearts, minds, and wallets with their
delicate appeal and vibrant intensity.

Peridot
Amongst all the green gemstones, none
is as vibrant as a peridot. After decades of
absence, the olive green stone that sparks
from within has made a comeback. Initially
found on the volcanic island of Zabargad
in the Red Sea, off the coast of Egypt, it is
now being mined at many other locations
across the globe. Bulgari, famed for using
diverse precious and semi-precious
gemstones together in their high jewellery
necklaces, has used peridots against a
variety of gemstones like rubies, amethysts,
tourmalines, rubelites, garnets, and mother
of pearls. The tassel pendants by
Continental Diamond come
in a variety of coloured
gemstones, but the one
with peridots steals
the show with its
neon brilliance.
Chrysoprase
Call it mint-green or apple-green,
chrysoprase is a luscious opaque gemstone,
smooth in texture and thus often cut into
cabochons or beads. The name comes from
a combination of two Greek words: ‘chrys’
meaning yellow or gold and ‘prase’ referring
to green, which in the case of chrysoprase
comes from nickel. Soothing in nature, the
gemstone is said to have healing powers
for broken hearts. The deeper the green,
the higher the price. Versatile by colour, it
pairs well with yellow, white, and even rose
gold. The Italian jeweller Moraglione uses
this pleasant gemstone with diamonds and
pale emeralds in its Sissi collection, and in
combination with pale rutilated quartz in its
Isabella collection. On the other hand, Farah
Khan achieves striking looks by pairing it
with rich gemstones like rubies, emeralds,
amethysts, tanzanites, and pearls.

KNOWLEDGE
Spessartite Garnet
Spessartite is a fiery red-orangey member of
the larger garnet family that comes in most
shades of an evening sunset sky. Also known
as the ‘Garnet of the Sun’, spessartite brings
warm energy, inspiring and encouraging the
wearer to achieve her dreams and goals. In
jewellery, it is either used individually with
diamonds, or in combination with similartoned gemstones like rubies, tourmalines,
and sapphires, filling the missing orange
spot in the colour sequence. The spessartite
flower brooch from Picchiotti perfectly
exemplifies the radiance of energy, with
gently flowing diamond-studded petals. The
German jeweller Hemmerle’s earrings set
with rare Melo Melo pearls and spessartite
garnets in copper and white gold create a
unique yin-yang appeal.
Tanzanite
The deep cerulean brilliance of blue
sapphire was absent from most jewellery
boxes due to its high price and its rumoured
astrological effects. Discovered just over 50
years ago and mined only in Tanzania, it was
used as a blue sapphire substitute at first.
It now made a mark on its own in the high
jewellery industry with its rich and deep inky
bluish-purple colour that has its own special
magic and charm. A versatile gemstone,
tanzanite is easy to pair with emeralds,
rubies, diamonds, and pearls. When tumbled
into beads, they make wonderful tassels for
traditional Indian jewellery like the one from
the House of Rose. When cut with precision,
they make proud centerpieces accented with
diamonds, like Violet — a garland necklace
by Ganjam with a 47.11ct cushion-cut
tanzanite. A colour suitable for everyday wear,
Tanzanite is also in demand for engagement
rings, like the Paolo Costagli three-stone
engagement ring.

Morganite
Sweet, delicate, and with just the right hint
of romance, morganite, the peachy-pink
cousin of aquamarine, is also known as pink
beryl. It comes in various shades, ranging
from pink to orange and violet, and emanates
feminine charm and tenderness. The clarity
and translucence of the stone affect the
price immensely. The best way to enhance its
delicate look is to team it up with diamonds
in white gold, like the Boodles necklace with
a morganite faceted drop. Morganite also goes
well with white and greyish pearls, bringing
out the pink colour beautifully — like these
drop earrings from Yoko London.
The unique qualities of these gemstones
have earned them a well-deserved spot in the
world of precious jewellery. When found in
high quality and substantial size, most have
broken records at major international auction
houses. And they will continue to do so.

t is a thin line when
t is a thin line when
differentiating a 'nice'
man from a 'good' one.
But those who — like us — had the good
fortune to know him personally, and the
many beautiful ladies he adorned in his
lifetime, agree that Stefan Hafner was one
such rare example. His sensitivity towards
women, his outgoing “diamond in the
rough” personality, and his humble manners
made any encounter with him a pleasure.
And his sharp sense of proportions and
aesthetics, his craftsmanship and
elegance made him stand tall and
beloved in the rarefied world of high
jewellery.
You could always and immediately
spot a Stefan Hafner collier or pair of
earrings during a fashion show, in a club, or
on the red carpet. It just worked. It shone
and sparkled from all sides, and it stood out
— a quality we have rarely seen elsewhere.
The expertise reflected in his haute couture
jewellery, and his drive to always be a little
ahead of the company’s vision, has made
him a legend. An enduring one that made
the House of Stefan Hafner what it is today.
Stefan's sensitivity to art and
beauty found a home in the lively
and historic city of Bologna, where he
chose to locate his atelier. His work took him
around the world, to personally service royal
families, New York celebrities, and elegant
ladies of the world everywhere. But even
more so, he travelled to observe the women
and their style in each country. He translated
their charm and elegance into jewellery,
materialising secrets and dreams in the form
of diamonds, smoky quartzes, and precious
topazes. Instilled with a consciousness for
jewellery-making, each collection was barely
ever a replica of the other.
Though he ventured far and wide for
inspiration, his heart belonged home. He
valued the ancient tradition of master
goldsmiths, their love for gold and precious
stones, and their desire to adorn feminine
beauty. He sought out the most expert
craftsmen of Bologna and Valenza, and
together, they turned his visions into reality.
His rich Italian-Swiss heritage played a part
in the technicality and creativity in his work,
fusing a tradition of Swiss watchmakers with
his Italian creativity.
With its current creations, Stefan Hafner
turns away from usual shapes and forms. The
collection's pure and harmonious concepts
give life to pieces that evolve over time,
becoming ageless and timeless.
Ultimately, his jewellery never fails to
emanate the joie de vivre of someone who
does his work with love and dedication.
No matter what the pieces seek to express,
Stefan Hafner creations will confer grace
and femininity to any woman who wears
them.
And we at Solitaire Magazine miss him
and his easy smile.
Stefan Hafner will be available at Jocalia by Zenith
Affair in January 2016.

or most parts of the world, we’re ushering in the winter season where
coats and jackets take centre stage. But all that covering up doesn’t
mean we, ladies, can’t show off. The female silhouette is always
something to celebrate. You can’t disagree — belts are like ribbons
that top off a gift wrap. From wide sash to skinny chains, it’s all in the waist as these bodyhugging accessories are made to complement. And while the sexy midriff is getting all
that attention, a statement brooch would make for a cherry on top. It’s an accessory with
multiple translations: a piece of art, an identity, or a functional jewellery.

tunning gems and jewels brought in from different parts of
the world took centre stage at this year’s edition of Singapore
JewelFest. Held from October 9 to 18 at a custom-built Jewel
Pavilion at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza, the show saw some of the
most innovative and beautifully-crafted jewellery. An annual affair that gathers
jewellery aficionados all over world, this year’s JewelFest also featured masterpieces
designed to honour the country’s rich cultural heritage.

cultural heritage
For its 13th installation, JewelFest went all
out with the opening celebration, kickstarting
it with a fashion show featuring the latest
Mouawad-designed Victoria’s Secret Dream
Angels Fantasy Bras. Worth $2 million
and containing more than 16,000 rubies,
diamonds, and sapphires, the bejewelled
lingeries were previously showcased by
Victoria’s Secret supermodels Adriana Lima
and Alessandra Ambrosio last year. Another
highlight of this year’s festival were jewellery
designs inspired by the celebrations of
Singapore’s Golden Jubilee. Featuring unique
creations by six jewellers, namely, Caratell,
Jaipore by Ritu Aurora, Kavant & Sharart,
Simone Jewels, Vihari, and Lee Hwa Jewellery,
the collection pays homage to Singapore’s
heritage. Each piece was inspired by paintings
from the William Farquhar Collection of
Natural History Drawings.
The 10-day affair was divided into two
editions — the first one highlighted haute
jewellery from 49 Asian designers from Japan,
Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, India, and
Singapore. While the second edition featured
iconic jewels that hailed from Europe, USA,
and the Middle East. Italian brands Verdi
and ZYDO, German fine jeweller Hans D.
Krieger, Switzerland’s Messerer Juwelier, and
Belgium’s Shree Jewels were only some of the
many brands that exhibited their exceptional
range of jewellery pieces..

Patek Philippe celebrates exclusive Minute
Repeaters appreciation session
Patek Philippe and Emperor Watch and Jewellery hosted VIPs in their
first ever Patek Philippe store at the Hilton Singapore. The minute
repeater appreciation session was conducted by Patek Philippe’s
International Technical and Sales Trainer, Ms Anne-Gaëlle Ruch. Guests
were challenged to a test of three minute repeaters, grading the rhythm,
volume, duration, pitch, harmony, and equilibrium of each sound, and
guessing the case material and type of gong. They were thereafter treated
to a rare opportunity to hold and hear the actual minute repeaters. The
exclusive event concluded with a five-course dinner.

Oftentimes you feel that you give your trust
too easily, even if trusting people does not
necessarily mean they will be completely
honest with you. It becomes a source of
disappointment for you when you realise that
doing so promotes a one-way relationship and
you are at a disadvantage. Being transparent
about your feelings and keeping an open
communication will go a long way. Malachite
and quartz help soothe and balance the mind.
An intense feeling of being stuck in a rut

about it will only make you feel frustrated.

Finding Your
Ring Size
Your Ring
Place your ring on top of any one of
these circles. The size of your ring is
where the circle sits snugly around
the inner circumference of the ring.
A ring is a very intimate piece of jewellery; some are worn
every day. This means it should fit well and feel comfortable,
so here are some important sizing tips.

Where Size Matters
A person’s ring size may change over time
owing to age, injury or weight change. A
jeweller may be able to resize your ring,
although this depends on its design.
If your finger falls between two sizes, choose
the larger size to make sure it will fit; a wider
ring may require a slightly larger size, because
it covers more of your finger.
Measure your finger size at the end of the day
when your fingers are at their largest (like
sizing shoes).
Wrap a piece of string or a strip of paper
around your finger. Mark the point where the
two ends meet. Measure the string or paper
against a ruler to get the circumference of
your finger. Divide that by 3.14 to get the
diameter of your finger. Look up your ring size
using the table shown on the right.
Don’t measure finger sizes when your hands
are cold; let them warm up to room
temperature.
18 (19.0MM)
10 (16.1MM)
19 (19.4MM)
11 (16.5MM)

A young designer immortalises
Saturn’s legacy
T
he god of bountiful
harvest, Saturn is an
important deity in Roman mythology. It was
said that his reign marked a Golden Age
of peace and prosperity. He taught men to
work and toil in order to transform earth
into a terrestrial paradise.
For his first major work of art, young
designer Alessandro Maria Scavia pays
tribute to this great god with the Saturn’s
Throne, an elegant chair-sculpture which
bears the emblems of two of the icons of
Italian craftsmanship, Medea Furnishings
and Scavia Jewellery. At first glance, the
subject of opulence and abundance is
evident, with food being realistically and
symbolically presented. But a closer look
gives you a deeper understanding of the
real essence of the fixture — hope, hard
work, and optimism — the very things that
Saturn wanted to instil in men. Featuring
human-like legs to symbolise everyday toil,
the chair has two flanking cornucopias
which embody fertility and prosperity.
The lush fruits and ears of wheat are all
handcrafted in gold and silver, enamelled,
and elaborately festooned with diamond,
ruby, garnet, agate, jasper, amethyst,
carnelian, and jade. The gold-lacquered
French limewood frame and velvet seat
are all distinctly handmade by Scavia and
Medea’s artisans.
“There will never be a future of welfare
and prosperity if we forget our own origins
and traditions, the simplest handicraft
work and the knowledge of our past,”
shares Alessandro. “We must always have
hope for a better future, and struggle every
day to get it.”
