VAPs
Patients on vents are high risk for infections.
People on mechanical ventilation are often
sedated and rarely able to communicate. As such,
many typical symptoms of pneumonia will either
be absent or unable to be obtained. The most
important signs are fever, low body temperature,
new purulent sputum, and hypoxemia/decreasing
amounts of oxygen in the blood. Through research
and a collaborate team effort of pulmonoligists,
RT’s, infection control monitoring and a dedicated
nursing team, HBH Houston is proud to report we
have had zero VAP to date.

CLABSIs
An estimated 41,000 central line-associated
bloodstream infections (CLABSI) occur in U.S. hospitals
annually. These infections are usually serious, typically
causing a prolongation of hospital stay and increased
cost and risk of mortality. CLABSI can be prevented
through proper management of the central line.
Through evidence based practice, research, education
and increased monitoring, HBH has implemented new
techniques and guidelines for the care of central
lines. There have been zero reported blood stream
infections.
