People on mechanical ventilation are often sedated and rarely able to communicate. As such, many typical symptoms of pneumonia will either be absent or unable to be obtained. The most important signs are fever, low body temperature, new purulent sputum, and hypoxemia/decreasing amounts of oxygen in the blood. Through research and a collaborate team effort of pulmonoligists, RT’s, infection control monitoring and a dedicated nursing team, HBH Houston is proud to report we have had zero VAP to date. These infections are usually serious, typically causing a prolongation of hospital stay and increased cost and risk of mortality. CLABSI can be prevented through proper management of the central line. Through evidence based practice, research, education and increased monitoring, HBH has implemented new techniques and guidelines for the care of central lines. There have been zero reported blood stream infections.
