NEWSLETTER
MAY 2016
♡ SPEAKING FROM THE HEART ♡
May is such an exquisitely beautiful time of year. It quietly ushers in a world busy with the
process of coming alive again. It is a time for unearthing new discoveries, reawakening
dormant desires, rekindling forgotten memories and rediscovering our potential to feel the
many textured grains of life pass through our fingertips. Under a brilliant blue sky the grass
is sprouting shiny new green shoots, flowers are bursting with vibrant color and delicate
fragrance, birds are singing joyful songs of desire and delight, and baby animals are taking their first
tentative steps out into the world. Neighborhoods welcome the noise and confusion of children at play,
couples strolling hand in hand, and senior adults leisurely walking down streets alive with memories....
May is a celebration of life.
We have an opportunity to embrace each new day that presents itself before us. As each morning unfolds
around us, we are presented with a smorgasbord of choices and options from which to sink our fingers and
toes into. With our eyes wide open, we can observe the beauty of life... in a child’s tender and delightful
discoveries of her new capabilities; in the beautiful and gentle display of birth and growth that Mother
Nature carefully exhibits; and in our own capacity to dream, reach for and learn new ideas about the world
and ourselves. We can see, learn and engage in the beauty of life.... as we breathe deeply, we can take in
the sense of wonder that being and active participant in the process of life brings.
Take a slow deep breath of the fresh May air. Feel your lungs expand with the sense of well being and the
power to look forward with hope and optimism. You have a remarkable capacity to overcome the
difficulties, stresses and changes that accompany a life with people. With spirit and determination you
seek out opportunities to enrich, stimulate and soothe your mind, body and soul. You find areas of
commonality and connect along lines of mutual interest. When you isolate, your sadness grows. When
you take a knowing step towards a friend, and join hands in search of a more meaningful tomorrow, you
will unlock the possibilities for feeling satisfaction and pleasure. With every beat of your heart you have a
new chance to feel, to reach out, and to be touched by the miracle of life...Keep a welcome space open in
your heart to celebrate - to take in all that is truly meaningful and real - and enjoy!!
With love, Marian

Senior Center Director’s Message
This space is reserved for those people wishing to give
their warmest and most sincere thanks to their friends,
family members or anyone you care about. Perhaps you
would like to wish someone a special birthday or thank
them for a thoughtful gesture.
For a donation to SNAP, tell us what you’d like to say.
Please see Peggy or Nina with your submission. Your
generous cash donation helps to maintain and enhance
our senior center.
PLEASE REMEMBER SNAP
IN YOUR WILL OR TRUST
There are many ways to give to charity and good
causes. Bequests can serve as a memorial to honor the
memory of a loved one, or establish a fund for a
particular aspect of SNAP. Bequests are often a final
communication one has with descendants, a way of
demonstrating your values and setting an example for
your heirs.
A planned gift or bequest to SNAP helps you to
determine your legacy in a truly meaningful way and
have a profound impact on the future of the
organization. Please remember SNAP so that we can
continue to provide important services to others in our
community.

I recently read an article titled “Seven Awesome Things about Getting Old”. It was interesting as I
continued to read and I realized that getting older truly means getting better. But only if you are
able to learn from your experiences and be at peace with the decisions you have made. Never
second guessing yourself and being secure with the person you have grown to be. These 7 awesome
things only come to people who are confident with their lives and have mastered the art of living and
learning.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
You know who you are. You finally stop caring what other people think of you.
You get rid of the vampires. Those are the people who sucked you dry and gave nothing back.
You make peace with yourself. You forgive yourself your imperfections and you move on.
You no longer care about being cool. Very few people are…And it’s ok.
You stop doing things to impress others. You now do things to fulfill yourself. When you try
something new you enjoy the experience, as opposed to being embarrassed because you
think you are “no good”.
6. You’re still growing, but it’s on the inside now. You recognize the profound value in things.
You deeply cherish time with your friends and you feel gratitude.
7. The trio of should/could/ would. Should I have? Could I have? Would I have? They are
replaced by “I can and I will. Then again, maybe I won’t”
“You finally know the truth. You’re not a victim of life. You are life, and you only get one. So
you Live large.” -Jane Watson

A MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD
At the board meeting held on April 18th, we discussed our hopes for the completion of the new building. Our
director, Paola Miceli was kind enough to come to the meeting to address our questions. With her connection
to the politicians in the county she managed to get quite a financial boost so that we no longer need $950,000
but $250,000 to complete the work. Her hope is that we are into the new building before the end of the year.
We spoke about the jewelry sale on May 2nd in time for Mother’s Day. The jewelry class will go 50-50 with
SNAP at this sale. All jewelry and knick-knack donations are gratefully accepted for the sale. Please see
Carole or Andrea.
We are also in the process of arranging a Craft Sale/Flea Market event on a Saturday in June to be held
indoors at SNAP to make money for the New Building Fund. Tables will be open to outdoor vendors as well
as SNAP members for $25 each. You can sell your own items for profit and enjoy the day with friends and
neighbors or you can shop at our visiting vendors. Nina Bhola and myself are working with the Fundraising
Committee to make this a success.
The question regarding members being asked to move from a table they have chosen to sit at has come up
again. This will be discussed at length at the open board meeting on May 16th at 10am. You are all aware of
the rules but we will refresh everyone’s memory at that time. Please have your questions and concerns ready
to discuss at the meeting. Nina Bhola and the entire board are ready and willing to answer you.
Thank you in advance for your participation, these meetings give you a chance to voice your opinions and
complaints.
