As we have said in the past and continue to boast, our New Jersey Wrestling Championships are the best in the country. The NWCA has complimented us on the system that we have in New Jersey (Team and Individual Championships) and are trying to use it at the National level to promote the sport of wrestling. We have produced many outstanding wrestlers, headlined by individuals such as Olympic Champions Jordan Burroughs, Bruce Baumgartner, Chris Campbell and so many others. We are proud of our wrestlers and this year is no different. There are many outstanding wrestlers in this year’s field. The success of these wrestlers is only possible by the efforts of many, especially the parents and coaches of each of the wrestlers. The showcase for these outstanding athletes helps to complete the wrestling season in grand fashion. This is only possible through the help of many, my assistant, Jack Kinner, Steve Timko and his staff at the NJSIAA, especially Jewel Sellers, and the tournament staff at the tables and around the arena as well as the many coaches and officials who help behind the scenes. I would like to say a special thank you to the Convention Center staff and the Security Staff for their cooperation and assistance. Most importantly, a thank you to all the great fans that support the wrestlers and the State Championships. You are the Greatest. Howie O'Neil - NJSIAA Wrestling The NJSIAA Wrestling Committee and the NJ Wrestling Tournament Director Coaches Association continue to try to improve the sport of wrestling. Although there were a few glitches this year with the changeover to Track Wrestling, the seeding procedures continue to be improved. Next year the system glitches should be corrected and the system should be one that we all can utilize with understanding and without complications. Also, as a result of the partnership with the NWCA and Track Wrestling, many have started to use a live scoring system. This will be improved as the years go by and eventually it will be universal. The Coaches Association recommended creating 5 groups just as football did. This was approved and the first year of the 5 groups was a success. Despite the cold temperatures and the snow the attendance was still one of the largest since the group championships were started. The 5 groups necessitated a change in venue to Sun Bank Arena in Trenton. The initial reaction of the coaches was that the venue was very good and enjoyable for the teams. The overall success of the change is still being evaluated. The committees continue to listen to the coaches and fans to look for ways to improve not only the tournaments but wrestling in general. I would like to share a letter from Mike Moyer of the National Wrestling Coaches Association which will only support what I have been saying and make it even more obvious of what we have here in New Jersey. “On behalf of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Board of Directors and our President, Coach Mark Cody at the University of Oklahoma, I want to thank the entire New Jersey wrestling community for entrusting us to provide numerous programs and services designed to strengthen wrestling throughout the state. We are excited to be collaborating on three significant projects; the automation of the NJSIAA district seeding tournaments, the streamlining of reporting regular season dual meets results to multiple clearinghouses (ranking committee, newspapers, etc.), and the use of the NWCA/Track Wrestling Tournament Software for the NJSIAA post season tournaments. It is our goal to help every coach reduce the amount of time they spend on burdensome administrative duties so they have more time to spend with their student-wrestlers. One of the new focuses of the NWCA is on high school wrestling participation trends across America. Over the past decade, we’ve noticed that while overall participation is growing (by about 40,000); the average roster size per team is actually shrinking (leading to more forfeits). In 1975, the average roster size (nationally) was 37 and today it is 26. Further, on average, approximately 26-29% of individual high school dual meet matches are now forfeits. We believe one of the primary factors leading to this trend in many states is the diminishing importance of regular season dual meets. That said, I want to commend the NJSIAA and its Wrestling Committee for their commitment to adopting rules and regulations designed to increase participation, fan interest, and media exposure for scholastic wrestling. We believe New Jersey represents the gold standard in this regard as evidenced by the fact that the incidence of forfeits throughout your state is well below the national average. That said however, there are still forfeits in New Jersey and one forfeit is one too many. A forfeit either represents a student in the school who once wrestled and no longer does or it represents a student in the school who has yet to be invited into our sport. The NWCA has developed several online coaching development resources designed to promote best practices for improving the recruitment and retention of wrestlers at every age group level. Please go to www.nwcaonline.com to access them. Lastly, we want to congratulate all wrestlers and coaches who are participating in the NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships this year. You are fortunate to be able to compete in one of the premier state championships in America. Good luck and best wishes for a fantastic 2015 NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships. “ Sincerely, Mike Moyer Executive Director NWCA Submitting Names for: The Harry E. Lake Award Contributions to New Jersey Wrestling Gene Barber This year’s Harry E. Lake Award winner is the now-retired, veteran coach of Absegami High School, Gene Barber. Gene began his wrestling odyssey at South Jersey’s legendary powerhouse, Paulsboro High School, where in 1969 he won the District 29 title and was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler. He went on to place 3rd in Region 8.Upon graduation from Paulsboro in 1969, Barber spent two years at Camden County Junior College where he garnered All-American status by placing 2nd in Junior College Nationals (JUCOs) in 1971. After leaving Camden County Junior College, Barber attended Trenton State College, now TCNJ, where he once again earned All-American honors: this time by placing 3rd in both 1972 and 1973; however, in 1973, he also was a Division I All-American, gaining this honor by finishing 2nd in the country. Barber graduated from Trenton State in 1974 with a degree in Health and Physical Education. He did his student teaching at his alma mater, and was a permanent substitute teacher there in the Health and Physical Education Department and also assisted by coaching both football and wrestling before moving on to Agsegami High School in 1978 where he spent the remainder of his 33 year teaching and coaching career. During Barber’s tenure at “Gami” he put together some eye-popping statistics: his teams went 507-136-4 (a .785 winning percentage), won 18 Cape Atlantic League titles, 6 South Jersey Championships and 4 State Group Championships. His Absegami team was ranked #1 in the state in ‘02, ‘03 and ‘04, and in ‘04 was ranked #4 in the nation. Many fans will recall the “show down” between #1 Gami vs #1 Easton (PA) at the Carpenter Center on the campus of the University of Delaware in ‘02. The match was won by Absegami by a single point, but the win was not secured before an overtime period win at the heavyweight weight class (wrestled last in those days). It was a stellar day for New Jersey wrestling. Barber coached 16”100 match” winners, 129 District Champions, 46 Region Champions and 8 individual State Champions. Ever the consummate coach, quiet in the corner and self-effacing, Barber would much rather recall his teams’ accomplishments and the positive impact he believed wrestling had upon the lives of all of his former wrestlers than the accolades he had bestowed upon him...and there were many: Barber was named Region 8 Coach of the Year 5 times, named NJ Coach of the Year in 2001, was named USA Wrestling’s “Man of the Year” in 2004 and was the recipient of the Unico Lifetime Achievement Award. Also included in this list of personal achievements are being inducted into the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Paulsboro High School Hall of Fame, the Camden County Hall of Fame, The TCNJ Hall of Fame, the National Junior College Hall of Fame, the Gloucester County Hall of Fame, the South Jersey Coaches Hall of Fame, the NJSIAA Hall of Fame, and in 2011, was inducted into the New Jersey Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for “Life Time Service to Wrestling.” On retiring in 2011, Barber has continued to remain active in wrestling, working behind the scenes at district, region, group and state competitions. Currently living in Hammonton, NJ, he and Kathy, his wife of 33 years, raised 3 children: Matthew (27), a Waterford, NJ police officer; Gina (24), an event planner for Smithville, NJ; and, Michael (22) a special education teacher in Sommerville, NJ. The Harry E. Lake - Outstanding Contributions to N.J. Wrestling Award - bears the name of the Director of Athletics at Union High School. Mr. Lake organized and directed the state tournaments from 1934 until his untimely death in 1959. He organized the New Jersey Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association in 1934. It has been said that Bill Cann brought wrestling to New Jersey and Harry Lake promoted it. No one doubts that Harry would approve of the 2008 selection of C. Norman Winter as the recipient of the Harry E. Lake Award. PREVIOUS WINNERS OF THE LAKE AWARD 1962-T.R. Williams 1963-H. Boresch 1964-M. Schibanoff 1965-E. Loeser 1966-R. Voliva 1967-C. Members may only receive this esteemed award one time The First Annual Award has been presented to VINCENT RUSSO ~ March 9, 2014 Vincent “Vinnie” Russo has been officiating wrestling in the State of New Jersey for the past 30 plus years. He has officiated on all levels of the sport including National, as well as The State Finals. In 1999 Vinnie was named the NJSIAA/NFHS Official of the Year. Vinnie has been ranked number 1 by the State Coaches Association for the past 15 years. Along with his excellence in officiating Vinnie has served as Treasure of the New Jersey Wrestling Officials Association for the past 9 years. Along with his State involvement Vinnie has been invited to be a member of the Wrestlers in Business Network, and is currently a member of The NJ NHSF Rules Committee. When Vinnie was named “Chief Referee” for the State of New Jersey 4 years ago, and with that title comes with the task of being the Wrestling Assignor for the Sectional, District, Regional, and State Wrestling Tournaments. One of Vinnie’s greatest achievements is being the Founder of the Referee Evaluation Process. Each NJSIAA Wrestling Referee has been assigned a number which is located on the back of their Official’s Shirt. The New Jersey Wrestling Officials Association is the only Officials group that has this number system in the State. With this process he also formed a group of over 40 Evaluators throughout the State of NJ. This is the Major Reason why New Jersey Officials are considered the Best in the Country. Vinnie along with this long list of accolades also assigns the officials for 70 different New Jersey Schools. With the evaluation process fully in place it gives Vinnie a large picture on where we need to work to improve as an organization. Vinnie has done an enormous amount of work to help are officials become the best. Vinnie is married to his lovely Wife Lorraine and has 3 daughters, Kandice, Mia and Shea. What a fitting honor to Vinnie then to have this award named for him. He wrestled in high school at Roselle Park and coached for schools such as Cranford, Glen Ridge, and Marlboro. For the past 31 years Roy has been an official. His love of the sport, dedication, and professionalism made him one of the best officials in the state. His officiating career includes multiple regional awards, 10 state finals, and the current appointment of state rule interpreter. He often says his greatest reward is being part of the wrestling fraternity and the great relationships he had built over the years. His commitment to high school wrestling has helped elevate the level of officiating in the state of New Jersey. Currently in his 21st year as an administrator at Bridgewater Raritan High School Roy is joined by his wife Tammy, son Roy, and daughters Alyssa and Carlee. Thanks to his sensational defense, Agaisse accomplished just that when he rode out Phillipsburg's Brandon Paetzell in the second period and then escaped in the third for a 1-0 victory in a much-anticipated showdown in the 106-pound final at the NJSIAA/Resilite championships Sunday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. "When I set out at the beginning of the season, my goal was to win states," Agaisse said. "With all the hard work I put in to get here, it's a great feeling." Longtime training partners, Agaisse and Paetzell have squared off many times over the years but only once in high school prior to the state final -- a 1-0 victory by Agaisse in a dual meet last season. The state final was rather reminiscent of that encounter, as Agaisse (41-0) was tough on top and then held off several near takedowns from his fellow sophomore. "I knew my defense was good enough," Agaisse said. "But I still wanted to look to keep scoring points. It was a very similar match (to last season's). We're pretty even on our feet." Agaisse also had a handful of near-offensive scores, but Paetzell (39-2) was also able to fend those off. He just could not get the second period escape he needed - one that would have likely sent the bout to overtime in the end. "He's very tough defensively," Paetzell said. "I got in on two deep shots and couldn't finish. He's really tough on top. … I need to train twice as hard as I have been and use this to motivate me to work even harder." Both wrestlers have now won state medals in their first two seasons and made considerable jumps up the podium this season. Paetzell finished fifth in the state last season at 106 pounds. Agaisse was seventh in the state at 106 pounds last year. Bergen Catholic's Suriano defeats Holy Spirit's Pat D'Arcy to claim 113-pound title By Joe Kania For The Star-Ledger Winning, for Bergen Catholic's Nick Suriano, simply is not enough anymore. The sophomore entered yesterday's 113-pound state final having won by eight points or more in each of his previous 44 bouts. Although that streak would be snapped in the final, Suriano's unbeaten streak continued when he defeated Holy Spirit's Pat D'Arcy, 7-0, at the NJSIAA/Resilite championships yesterday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. It was Suriano's second title after he won the 106-pound title in 2013. He remains unbeaten, at 87-0, in his career. “I'm happy,” Suriano said with a straight face. “I just wasn't happy with my performance. Of course I'm not going to major every person every time, but that's not my goal. My goal is to shut you out every time, and he didn't score a point.” Suriano now enters the conversation as potentially one of the best to ever wrestle in New Jersey, if he was not there already. Anthony Ashnault of South Plainfield became the first four-time unbeaten state champion in state history in 2013, a feat that Suriano could match should he remain unbeaten and win two more titles. It is no small task and Suriano knows he is a long way away from that, but he admits that the thought has crossed his mind. “I definitely think about the four titles,” Suriano said, “but I'm also thinking about NCAA and world titles. This is just part of the steppingstone to where I want to be. I absolutely think I can get better. Today I wrestled a B- or a C+, I didn't wrestle my way. A year from today on the center mat I'll be 10 times better.” It is a scary thought. Hanover Park's Cefolo beats Russo of St. Peter's Prep for 120-pound title By James Kratch For The Star-Ledger Anthony Cefolo was in the stands for last year's state tournament. Then a sophomore at Hanover Park, Cefolo was a spectator supporting his teammates because he finished fourth in a loaded region tournament field, just a year after winning the 106-pound state title as a freshman. Yesterday, Cefolo was back taking several quarter turns from the top of podium to face each section of Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall after he had posted a 5-1 victory over Michael Russo of St. Peter's Prep in the 120-pound final at the NJSIAA//Resilite championshipsSunday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. "It's just a great feeling to be back and win the states," said Cefolo, who finished fourth in a stacked 120-pound class at Region 3 last year. "Last year I didn't make it, but hard work pays off. This was my one goal, to become a state champ again." Cefolo (41-5) took control late in the first period to make sure of it. He notched a takedown in the closing seconds and picked up two back points on Russo (32-6) for good measure for a 4-0 advantage two minutes in. "Getting a big lead like that in the beginning of the match, it sends a great feeling to you," Cefolo said. "You've got the lead and it's hard to come back from a four-point move. I felt real confident then." Russo, a senior who finished sixth in the state at 113 pounds last year, got an escape in the second period to cut it to 4-1. But a Cefolo escape in the third pushed the lead back up to four points and sealed the victory. "It was tough to come down here (last year) and watch my own weight with me not being able to qualify," Cefolo said. "It was a hard feeling. But this feels real good." Bound Brook's De La Cruz survives another tight one, beats Bierdumpfel for 126-pound title By Patrick Lanni For The Star-Ledger Craig De La Cruz proved once again he could prevail when the going got tough. After failing to escape from his defensive position in the first tiebreaker, the Bound Brook junior needed to attack to regain control of his 126-pound title match with Don Bosco Prep's Kyle Bierdumpfel. Needing a takedown, De La Cruz lunged and successfully swung his sophomore opponent to the mat to earn the 3-2 decision and his second straight state title at the NJSIAA/Resilite championships on Sunday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. "I knew he was going to relax because I didn't take many shots that match," De La Cruz said. "That was pretty much my go-to shot right there." De La Cruz (39-3), who was the 113-pound champion a season ago, also advanced in overtime in the semifinals with a 5-1 decision over Monroe's Salvatore Profaci. His success late in matches was a nod to his training, he said. "I was well-conditioned and that really helped pull me through late, especially right there," he added. In the Region 5 final against Ryan Pomrinca of North Hunterdon last weekend, De La Cruz could not find the late-game moment to defeat Pomrinca. The loss was extra motivation for his return to Atlantic City. "I needed that," De La Cruz said. "It was a wake-up call for me. I went over that (loss) this week, and it just motivated me to win again. That feeling is just addicting and I have to finish it off again next year." North Bergen's Giraldo beats Magaldo of Watchung Hills in 132-pound final By Brian Deakyne For The Star-Ledger In a rivalry that has lasted longer than their high school careers, it seemed fitting that the 132-pound state championship came down to Anthony Giraldo and Mike Magaldo. And, much like their previous meeting this season, North Bergen's Giraldo was victorious in the NJSIAA/Resilite championship bout Sunday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Giraldo used an escape and takedown in the second period to take the title in a 3-1 decision over Watcung Hills' Magaldo for his second straight state crown after winning at 126 last year. "I knew that we were both pretty evenly matched, so I knew my coach always says that you need a takedown and an escape," Giraldo said. "That's how you're going to win those big matches. I knew after the first period when I had the choice that I wanted down right away. I knew I had to get up." Giraldo (41-0) rode out Magaldo (38-2) for the latter part of the second period and the entire third to get the victory. A late stalling call against Giraldo accounted for Magaldo's only point. Giraldo, who became the first North Bergen wrestler to win two state championships, beat Magaldo by the same score in a dual meet Jan. 18, but the head-to-head match-ups date back to middle school. "Since last night, his name's been going through my head," Giraldo said of his familiar foe. "It feels good to get on top. I think our rivalry pushed up past our limits. I think we push each other and that's why we're such good wrestlers." Paulsboro's Gentile fights off Cranford's Murray to win 138-pound title By Joe Kania For The Star-Ledger Sickness, fatigue and a surging opponent were not enough to come between Ronnie Gentile and his first state title. After coming down with flu-like symptoms six days earlier, the Paulsboro junior handed Cranford's Gavin Murray his first loss of the season to win the 138-pound title, 7-6, at the NJSIAA/Resilite championships Sunday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. “It still hasn't hit me yet,” Gentile said. “I think it will take a while to sink in that I'm actually a state champion.” Gentile (41-1) scored two first-period takedowns and appeared ready to run away with the title. Murray, who entered the final unbeaten, had other plans. Murray (40-1), a junior, closed the gap in the third period when Gentile began to tire and was penalized for stalling, bringing the score within a takedown. But Gentile was able to hold on. But Gentile was able to hold on. “Yeah, I've been pretty sick,” Gentile said. “That's no excuse. Those last seconds I was just thinking, 'I have to hold on, anything it takes. I just have to hold on.' ” The top seed, Gentile picked up decision victories over Southern Regional's Matt Wilhelm, Shawnee's Connor Muli and Delbarton's Travis Vasquez to reach his second final -- he was second at 132 in 2013. He had been ranked No. 1 at the weight by The Star-Ledger since the start of the season. “Being the top seed, I definitely felt like there was a little added pressure,” Gentile said. “I knew guys we going to be really gunning for me. I tried not to let it get to me though. I just tried to stay mentally positive.” With the victory, Gentile becomes Paulsboro's 26th state champion. “Growing up in Paulsboro I watched guys like Alex Silvestro, Joe Duca and Zach Greenwald win state titles,” Gentile said. “I really looked up to them and wanted to be like them when I was a little kid. Now I finally am.” DePaul's David McFadden captures first career title with 4-3 decision in 145-pound final By Connor Hughes For The Star-Ledger As the final seconds ticked off the clock, David McFadden saw many images from the past three years flash before his eyes. The DePaul wrestler saw his second-place state finish two years ago, then last year’s placing of sixth. He saw the time spent in the weight room, those sprints run to make living this moment a possibility. He knew that when the clock finally hit zero, all of it would finally pay off. “I was just holding on,” McFadden said. “I wasn’t going to lose.” McFadden held on, the clock hit zero and the junior won his first career state title by defeating St. Peter’s Prep’s Ryan Burkert, 4-3, in the 145-pound final at the NJSIAA/Resilite championships at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. “I can’t even explain this feeling right now. There’s nothing better in the world,” McFadden (42-1) said. “I’ve worked all year for this one match.” McFadden's one match game against a familiar opponent as both he and Burkert went to battle earlier in the year. McFadden defeated Burkhert, Moments into Sunday's contest, McFadden sensed the opponent he was facing was far different from the one he had seen earlier in the year. "I really didn't think I'd see him again," McFadden said. "He got a lot better. He's a tough opponent because he goes the full six minutes." Against Burkert (35-7), McFadden fell behind quickly when he was taken down just 20 seconds into the first period. The early deficit did not faze him, as he did his best to remain composed. “I was still in the match,” McFadden said. “It has only been maybe twice that I didn’t record the first takedown, but I’m a calm wrestler. I just had to fight through it.” After hitting the mat, McFadden escaped to pull within one. With 51 seconds remaining in the second period, he gained his first lead by recording a takedown of his own. “This was going to be a crazy match,” McFadden said. “I just knew I wasn’t going to lose. I worked too hard to come in second.” Burkert fought his way back in the third, pulling within one point after McFadden was called for a stall. With 15 seconds remaining, Burkert made one last effort at the title. The junior dived at McFadden, nearly bringing him down, but McFadden fought it off and held on for the victory. “He scared me at the end,” McFadden said. “(Burkert)'s a tough competitor, but I was able to stick it out and fight through it.” When McFadden returns for the 2015 season, he'll be three-time Region 1 champion, three-time District 4 champion and three-time state medalist. Burkhert will return as a two-time Region 4 champion, two-time District 16 champion and two-time medalist. Clark of St. Augustine's beats Hunterdon Central's Dinmore for 152-pound title By James Kratch For The Star-Ledger St. Augustine's Jack Clark won tournament championships all over the country in his days as a youth star and then a prep standout. But he will tell you no victory compares to the one he achieved yesterday in the 152-pound state final at the NJSIAA/Resilite Championships on Sunday in Atlantic City. "It's the greatest feeling. I've wanted to do this since I was 6 and it finally came true. I'm so excited," Clark said moments after he brought the crowd at Boardwalk Hall to its feet with a 3-1 overtime triumph over Gary Dinmore of Hunterdon Central, now a three-time state runner-up. "It's the best feeling ever, by far. Nothing even compared to that feeling. Look how many people are here. This is my state. I wanted to win more than anything." The bout lived up to its hype and billing, a clash between the undefeated and North Carolina-bound Clark, who transferred to St. Augustine after winning three Maryland state titles and two prep national crowns at McDonogh, and Penn State commit Dinmore, who was seeking his first state title after finishing second the previous two seasons. Both wrestlers stood tied at 1 after regulation, having fended off takedown attempts by the other, including one initially awarded to Dinmore with four seconds remaining before being waved off. In the extra period, Clark (26-0) finally broke through and ended the thriller with a takedown in 30 seconds. "It was an amazing match. He was extremely good," Clark said. "I see why he took second two times. He was definitely the best kid I wrestled this year. He had me nervous. He was really funky and he was quick." But while Clark's dream was realized, Dinmore (39-3) was not able to get to the top of the podium at long last. After finishing his career with a mark of 142-15, he said he thought his initial takedown being negated was the right call. His focus now, he said, is to prepare to continue his career at the next level. "I'm just thinking about college now," he said. "This is all just practice (for college) to me." East Brunswick's Jonathan Schleifer beats Bound Brooks's Joshua Ugalde in 160-pound final By Brian Deakyne For The Star-Ledger Little by little, year by year, Jonathan Schleifer has moved up the podium. After placing eighth as a freshman, East Brunswick's Schleifer finished third as a sophomore and second as a junior at the state wrestling championships. But yesterday, the Princeton-bound Schleifer finally reached the highly coveted top spot when he took down Bound Brook's Joshua Ugalde in the 160-pound state final at the NJSIAA/Resilite championships at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. In a rematch of the Region 5 final, Schleifer (38-0) captured the state title with a 6-5 decision. "That was regions, this is the state final," Schleifer said. "Obviously, it's different. We both have come a long way and neither of us wanted to finish second. We both showed more aggression, I believe." Schleifer came out firing with a pair of takedowns in the first period, but he played the final minute of the second period conservatively, and allowed Ugalde to climb back into a 4-4 tie with a takedown at the buzzer. "It's time to go, it's time to get my offense going," Schleifer said of his mindset to open the third period. From the defensive position, Schleifer used a reversal to take a 6-4 lead and almost had more before Ugalde called for an injury timeout. After the restart, Ugalde (36-4) closed to 6-5 with an escape in the final minute, but Schleifer held him off to clinch the title. "My freshman year, my goal was just to place," Schleifer said. "I didn't realize what being a state champ really was. Everybody talks about it in their practice rooms, but once I was in here, looking up at the top, I knew that was what I wanted. Every year, I've trained harder and harder." At the end, the biggest motivation for Schleifer was his family. "Just talking to my parents and my little brothers, it makes me realize how far I've come, growing up next to them," Schleifer said. Roxbury's Artigliere beats Farinaro of Don Bosco Prep for 170-pound title By Patrick Lanni For The Star-Ledger Dillon Artigliere carried the added pressure of an 86-match winning streak and the tall task of repeating as state champion when he took the mat for his 170-pound title bout with Don Bosco Prep's Luke Farinaro. But that did not deter the senior from ending his Roxbury career at the top. Artigliere polished off his high school campaign yesterday with a 3-1 decision over Farinaro to earn his second straight title and 87th straight victory at the NJSIAA/Resilite Championships on Sunday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. "It was my last match ever, so obviously there was a goal to win, but it feels a little extra nice to know that in your last one ever, you came out on top," said the Cornellbound Artigliere, who won the state title at 160 last year. After a building a 2-0 lead with a takedown in the first period, Artigliere (43-0) continued to control the match until the final 15 seconds, when Farinaro (32-6) threatened to erase his 3-1 lead. Farinaro, a senior, had Artigliere wrapped up in a hold at the center of the mat and nearly got the takedown he needed to send the match to overtime. Artigliere, however, was able to hold strong and fend off his Bergen County foe. "I knew there was not a lot of time on the clock and I knew I just had to keep battling and not give up that two," Artigliere said. "So I was just doing everything I could to keep fighting." After fighting for four years at Roxbury, Artigliere will head to Ithaca, N.Y. to continue his career at Cornell. But until then, he will have two state titles, an 87-match winning streak and memories to last a lifetime. "As cliche as it is, more than the wrestling, the matches and the wins, I'm going to miss the time with the coaches, my family and friends the most," Artigliere said. "Throughout my four years, they've been great, and I couldn't have asked for anything more." Bergen Catholic's Sebastian defeats Brearley's Balboni to win third straight By Joe Kania For The Star-Ledger Bergen Catholic's Johnny Sebastian's senior season had it all – championships, losses and a debilitating injury that could have, and maybe should have, ended his season. But when he walked off the mat yesterday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, none of that mattered. All that mattered was the result. And that was a third straight state championship. Sebastian scored a takedown in overtime to defeat Brearley's Joey Balboni, 6-4, in the 182-pound final at the NJSIAA/Resilite championships. The victory makes him just the 25th wrestler in New Jersey history to win three state titles. “You're going to look at the match and there were highs and lows,” Sebastian said. “The whole season had highs and lows. But I'm not going to critique myself, I'm just happy with the result. I'm so happy to win my third state title and be a part of this. I left my name in the history books as one of the best to ever wrestle in New Jersey.” Sebastian had defeated Balboni, 13-5, at the Beast of the East in December. One month later, Sebastian sustained a torn labrum in his shoulder that will require surgery. When they wrestled again for the state title, it was clear Balboni had learned from his mistakes. He took Sebastian down, something that he failed to do in their first meeting, and was able to slow Sebastian's offense, holding him to just four points. After Balboni secured his first takedown, the momentum “With my shoulder, I knew I had to pick and choose my shots,” Sebastian said. “I wasn't going to be able to fire away or I might have re-injured it. He was coming after me in that second half of the match. I knew I just had to keep my cool, breathe and focus on taking one good, hard shot.” Sebastian got that shot in overtime. He fired a low single-leg attempt, catching Balboni off-guard and scoring the winning takedown. Sebastian will head to Northwestern in the fall having won state titles in each of his final three high school seasons. “Sometimes people want to go out with a dominating victory,” Sebastian said. “I just wanted to win. A lot of people are going to remember this match. I want to be remembered as 'Johnny Wrestling.' I want to be remembered as someone who lived it, breathed it and laid it all on the line for one thing – to be the best.” Montgomery's Cassar claims state title at 195 to cap perfect season By James Kratch For The Star-Ledger As far as Montgomery High School senior Anthony Cassar is concerned, it was a fair tradeoff. “Eight months of living hell for six minutes of heaven,” he said today after winning the 195-pound title at the NJSIAA Wrestling Championships — the first in Montgomery history. Cassar was a 4-1 winner over Franklin’s Ralph Normandia in the fourth meeting between the Somerset County rivals. Cassar won them all — in the county tournament final, the District 18 final, Region V final and the state final. “I know there are a lot of wrestlers who beat someone three times, then lost in the state final,” said Cassar, who finished 43-0. “That was not going to happen.” That wasn’t a certainty until Cassar escaped with 23 seconds left in the second 30-second overtime and followed it up with a takedown with five seconds remaining. The bout was tied 1-1 after regulation.“I escaped and I thought it was over,” Cassar said. “Then I saw he was still coming at me. “I’ve never been in an ultimate ride out before. But I’ve always been confident in overtime. I just seem to get a boost of energy. I feel like I worked hard. I am in good condition, and I wanted to show it.” Cassar, who was making his first appearance in the state tournament, made a splash when he bounced top-seeded Matt Correnti, 8-2, in his Boardwalk Hall debut. Cassar was never as successful offensively as he was in his first bout, winning his next two by scores of 4-3 and 3-1 to get to the final. But like they say in football, “defense wins championships” and it did for Cassar. “Up until my last match in the regional finals last year, I never thought getting to the states was a possibility,” Cassar said. “For the next eight months, that became my No. 1 goal. No matter what I was doing, winning a state championship was on my mind.” Normandia, who will wrestle at Rutgers next season, got closer with every bout with Cassar, but never quite close enough. Normandia lost a tooth during the course of the state final. “I could feel his willpower,” Cassar said of Normandia, who fought off four deep double-leg takedown attempts in regulation. “It was a toe-to-toe battle. I won the two pretty easily (6-3 and 5-2) but the third one (3-1 in overtime) I wasn’t aggressive enough,” Cassar said. “I knew this one was going right to the end.” When asked how the view from the No. 1 spot on the podium looked, Cassar smiled.“Beautiful,” he said. Delsea's Dobzanski defeats Don Bosco's Chakonis to win second 220-pound title By Joe Kania For The Star-Ledger Delsea's Bryan Dobzanski came into the state tournament as a favorite who had earned a reputation as more than a standout wrestler. The senior will attend the University of Louisville in the fall on a baseball scholarship and is expected to be selected in this year's Major League Baseball draft. Still, he wanted to leave his legacy on Delsea and South Jersey wrestling. Dobzanski earned a reversal with two seconds left in double overtime to defeat Don Bosco Prep's Zack Chakonis, 3-1, in double overtime in the 220-pound final at the NJSIAA/Resilite championships yesterday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. It was Dobzanski's second consecutive state title and 89th consecutive victory. “There was a huge target on my back,” Dobzanski said. “I've been on this crazy long win streak, I've only allowed three points the whole season. I know people are gunning to beat me and if they beat me, it's a huge accomplishment for them. “It's a lot of pressure. It's something you have to deal with. You have to deal with it. You have to rise to the occasion. You've got to be the better man and I think I was.” Dobzanski and Chakonis met in the 220-pound final last March and Dobzanski won by a point. It was the only state final rematch from a year ago. “I'm hoping everybody who was in the building remembers me,” Dobzanski said. “That's my goal in life – to be remembered, to be somebody in the world. I really feel like this is a step closer to being a great person. That's all I wanted to do, be remembered, be legendary. I did that here today.” To reach the final, Dobzanski picked up falls over Southern Regional's Jesse Bauta and Wayne Valley's Justin Walker and won a 5-0 decision over St. Peter's Jordan Fox. Walker and Fox both ended their seasons on the podium, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Andrew Stevens wins 285-pound final, becomes first Camden winner By Brian Deakyne For The Star-Ledger Minutes after his historic 285-pound state championship bout, Andrew Stevens still had no words to describe what his senior season had entailed. With his emotions still running high, Stevens finally took a sigh of relief as he addressed a surplus of friends, family and media members after he had become the first state champion in school history for Camden with a 3-0 victory over Robbinsville's Tyler Gildner yesterday at the NJSIAA/Resilite wrestling championships at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. "It feels so awesome," Stevens said. "I won. It took a long time and I was getting so frustrated, waiting for my match to come around and to get to this point. It took a lot of work and preparation for this moment." On the heels of his dramatic semifinal victory Saturday night, when he arrived to the arena less than two minutes before he would have been disqualified for missing his match, Stevens' final bout was not filled with as much anxiety. But that mattered little to the supportive crowd on hand. "I was confident," said Stevens, who also became just the fifth winner from an inner-city public school since the state tournament began in 1934. "No matter who I was stepping on the mat against, I would have still beat them. I would have had to. I wanted to win that bad." After a scoreless first period, Stevens (37-0) earned an escape and grabbed a takedown in the second period to take the 3-0 lead. In the third, Stevens rode out Gildner (36-3) to clinch the title, and even then, he was left motionless on the mat. "It means the world to me because I'm the first and you can't say anything else," Stevens said. "It was so difficult. I got poked in the eye wrestling, I got beat up in practice. Basically, practice was torture." Stevens, who received the loudest ovation during the introductions prior to the finals, said the support he received from the Camden community over the past year pushed him over the hump. "It means so much to me to have people that I don't even know that I see in the hallway and having an impact on my life," Stevens said. "I have no words." And, less than 24 hours after almost missing his shot at a state title, his arrival was not an issue. He arrived hours in advance. "I was here early," Stevens said with a laugh. "I was here by 1:15 Atlantic City Notebook By James Kratch For The Star-Ledger Brian Deakyne and Patrick Lanni contributed Delbarton's Dan Reed capped his high school career at the NJSIAA Resilite championships in style. The senior 145-pounder notched a takedown with 30 seconds left in his third-place bout with Clearview's Michael VanBrill, picking up a 2-l victoryand reaching the 100-victoryplateau in his'final-scholastic match yesterday at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall. "I had it all planned out since our last dual meet,” Reed said. "I said, '10 more matches.' I wanted it to be the state .final, obviously, but it's still a really a good feeling." Reedwas one of six wrestlers to capture medals for Delbarton. Joining Reed on the podium were, teammates Ty Agqaisse, the state champion at 106 pounds, Travis Vasquez (third at 138), Josef Johnson (third at 170), Joseph Tavoso (fourth at 152) and Nick Farro (sixth at 120). Delbarton finished tied with Bergen Catholic and St. Peter's Prep for the most medals won by one schoot. "I've played sports (for a long time), and this is my favorite team I have ever been on,"Reed said. "We work the hardest, we get along the best and obviously it's showing." In the final match of his high school career, John Faugno of Glen Ridge pinned Jackson Liberty's Tim Liquori to claim seventh place at 160 pounds. The pin, which came at 3:57, came after a period and a half of scrambling. With a 3-2 advantage, Faugno got a takedown and spun Liquori into a cradle to end his career on a high note. “It feels great to go out of a season, out of a high school career, on a pin like that,” Faugno said. “It's kind of what my coaches were saying beforehand, being my last match and all that. I was hoping for better, I was hoping for a state championship, but to medal here and get on the podium, it's really a great feeling since I've never been able to do it before.” It had been 30 years since Red Bank Catholic sent a wrestler to the state championships, but Shawn McCord ended that drought when he advanced from the Region 6 tournament. The 220-pounder not only ended the drought but left Atlantic City with a medal after earning a 4-1 decision over Tyreek Smith of Moorestown to finish seventh. That capped a stellar senior run for McCord, who led RBC's football team to the Parochial, Group 3 semifinals. It was a banner weekend for the three 126-pounders from Region5. Bound Brook's Craig De La Cruz won the crown, while North Hunterdon's Ryan Pomrinca and Monroe's Salvatore Profaci met in the third-place bout, with Pornrinca winning, 2-1, in rideouts. Pomrinca had edged Profaci, who fell to De La Cruz in the state semifinal, in overtime in the Region5 semifinals. Pomrinca finished seventh in the state at 113 pounds in 2012 before a broken hand kept him off the podium last season. "The three guys that came out of our region, we're all placing top 4," Pomrinca said. "It's really tough. Wewere joking about how it's (almost) just us. You put us in the bracket, the best guys win. Us three, we happened to be in the semifinals and the best guys.". Two of St. Peter's six medals came from the same family, as twin brothers Connor and Ryan Burkert had strong tournaments. Connor, who wrestles at 138 pounds, finished fourth in the state after dropping a decision to Delbarton’s Vasquez in the final at 145. The brothers are juniors. The goal for Edison's Billy Povalac was to place in his first trip to the state tournament. But that aspiration took a dent when he suffered a 6-3 loss to Timber Creek's Lorenzo Ruggiero in the 138-pound preliminary round Friday. Undeterred, Povalac rattled off four wrestleback victories Saturday to ensure himself a spot on the podium. After dropping a wrestleback semifinal to Delbarton's Travis Vasquez yesterday morning, Povalac closed out the tournament with a 9-3 victory over Shawnee's Connor Muli in the fifth-place final. "I just wanted to get as far as I can," said Povalac, a junior. "Next year, I'm coming off a win instead of a loss. It's a big relief, having a win at the end of the year. Going into next year, it's going to feel great." Morris County had seven other medal winners beyond Delbarton's group. Both Roxbury's Dillon Artigliere and Hanover Park's Anthony Cefolo won championships, Artigliere at 170 and Cefalo at 120. Mendham had wo medal winners, as Sam Button finished fourth at 182 pounds and Eric Friedman finished eighth at 138 pounds, Jefferson’s Bryan Damon finished fourth at 10 and Morrsi Knolls’ Garrett O’Shea finished sixth at 106. Parsippany Hills’ Michael Weiss finished eighth at 182. West Jersey accounted for nine medals in total. Phil- lipsburg's Brandon Paetzell was second at 106 pounds and Jake Kocsis was fourth at 170 pounds. Hunterdon Central's Gary Dinmore was second at 152,Ioined by teammates Dytan Nace (fifth at i32) and teammate, Collin Boylan (eighth at 145), RyanPomrinca finished-third at128 pounds'and North Hunterdon teammate Mike Ciavarro was sixth at 152. Heavyweights' Andrew Pacheco of Warren Hills and PopeJohn's Noa Merritt finished sixth and eighth, respectively. The county highlights:' From Essex County Dean Caravela of Caldwell finished eight in the 113 pound bracket, John Ferinde of Nutley finished eight at 120 and John Faugno of Glen Ridge took seventh at 160. In Mlddlsex County, Jonathon Schleifer of East Brunswick finished first in the l60-pound bout and Profaci placed fourth at. 126.
