President’s
Message
The
Welcome to a new year,
a new club president
and new adventures!
I
From PAGE OBENSHAIN
2012 President
have been granted the great
honor of serving this club as the
president for the next year. I am
a small part of a team dedicated
to serving all the members of
this great organization. We hope to continue the tradition of offering varied experiences for you to get out and see old
friends and meet new members all the
while enjoying what we all have in common – the greatest car made!
We enjoyed many wonderful holiday
parties, thanks to the Morells and Mike
Kwasin for opening their beautiful homes
to us, and we had a very festive gathering
at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.
In 1962 a friend suggested we go to
Daytona to see the first ever sports car
race at that track. Needless to say, I was
hooked and have been a Porsche fan
ever since.

In March of the same year, we went
to the Sebring 12 Hours and I have only
missed a few races since then.
Each year, our Suncoast Region is a cosponsor of the Porsche Corral at the 24
Hours of Daytona. This year’s race, Saturday, Jan. 28 and Sunday, Jan. 29, is the 50th
anniversary and the turnout will be huge
– attendance and racers.
The corral is open Friday through Sunday with parking for about 200 Porsches, a
tent with big screen coverage of the races,
and food and drink for Porsche owners.
Each region takes shifts manning the tent
and corral parking. It is a great opportunity
to greet Porsche owners from all over the
county and inform them of the advantages
of joining PCA. If you are going, please sign
up to help out during our shift.
Friday is a great day to be at the track
as you can see the prep, talk to the teams
and see qualifying and practice sessions
and some great racing with the Continental Tire series races that are loaded with
911s, Boxsters and Caymans, among other
makes.
If you don’t get over on Friday, get there
early Saturday as the infield fills up and
even in a Porsche, they will not let you
drive into the infield.
The first weekend in February is the
48 Hours of Sebring, put on by our Suncoast Region along with our good friends
from Gold Coast Region. The opportunity
to volunteer or just come see some good
racing at no charge is still available.
We normally have over 300 Porsches
entered from full out race machines coming from competing at Daytona to our
showroom stock cars running in the Advanced Solo division. This club race has
been the largest in U.S. history and we
hope to keep it that way. Come on down
and check it out.
Happy New Year
to our readers
and advertisers!

SCHEDULE OF
Social Corner EVENTS
By Jill Perry,
2012 Social Chair
We keep on saying it; it
keeps on being true. It was another Great
Year and PCA folks are some of the friendliest people on the planet. Suncoast PCA
enjoyed many great events in 2011 for
Driver’s Education, Autocross, social events,
trips to fun places with great friends, rallies,
Concours, Rookie Weekend and on and on.
We are a blessed bunch!
The holiday season brought us some
festive and great events. It kicked off with
a not-to-miss party at Pete and Cindy Morell’s Wine and Hors d’Oeuvres party. What
a great and fun event! Thank you to Pete
and Cindy for rolling out the red carpet to
the Suncoast members! Thank you to Mike
Kwasin for hosting an over-the-top Holiday
Party in his beautiful home in South Tampa
and for opening up his home and heart to
us year after year. The following weekend
was another spectacular event, the Holiday
Gala, at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club; it was
again a huge success.
January Date Your Porsche Night
As you start thinking about your resolutions for the New Year, start thinking about
what fun events you’re going to attend and
get online and sign-up right away. Now is
the time to sign up and start off the New
Year with the First Date your Porsche night
of 2012 at the Colonnade, a long-standing
tradition with Suncoasters (see ad page 8).
RSVP by January 14 to be included in this
annual event.
The Collier Collection, Cars on
5th Avenue, and Vic Elford Dinner
The Everglades Region has joined in partnership with us to make what was a great
day into a fabulous day. It can be a weekend,
if that’s what you choose. On Saturday, Feb.
11, the Suncoast PCA tour of The Collier
Collection will be held from 10 a.m. – noon
(see pg. 32). The Collier Collection is a private venue that comprises over 100 automobiles manufactured between 1898 and
1995. The collection’s holdings encompass
some of the most extraordinary and relevant automobiles. The collection’s direction
has been to only hold the finest and, where
possible, the most original examples of each
selected model, which itself must meet rigid
criteria about historic significance. For more
info on the collection, RevsInstitute.org/
REVSMuseumBrochure.pdf.
Following the tour we will head to
downtown Naples and attend the 8th Annual Cars on 5th Avenue - a huge show
with five car clubs, 400+ cars and entertainment. This will be a casual event where
we’ll enjoy the show and dine at one of the
divine restaurants nearby – no reservations,
no organized group event, just leisurely enjoying the afternoon. The day will finish with
a spectacular evening hosted by the Everglades Region. We will dine with them and
enjoy listening to Vic Elford speak. Born in
London, Vic Elford was one of the fastest
drivers of the ‘60s and ‘70s - and a Porsche
hero. Nicknamed “Quick Vic” by his peers,
legendary driver Vic Elford is arguably the
most versatile all round driver of all time.
Pesky details: Sign up for the Collier
Collection Tour begins on January 1 on
www.ClubRegistration.net. The first 100
paid registrations will be able to attend the
event. After the first 100 sign up, we will
start a waiting list. The cost for the museum
tour is $15.The museum is located at 2500
South Horseshoe Drive, Naples, FL.The 8th
Annual Cars on 5th Avenue has no cost
and lunch is on your own. The dinner with
Vic Elford is $40 per person for Suncoast
members. To register for the dinner with Vic
Elford contact Carlos Vasallo at cvasallo@

The Membership Starting Line
By Joe Shukys, Membership Chairman
Dear Members,
I am celebrating my 10-year anniversary with the Porsche Club of America and
have belonged to two different chapters.
The first chapter I belonged to never saw
me, as I did not participate in any events to speak of. When
I came to Tampa, it was much the same way until I decided
to attend a display-your-ride event at the Hall’s house south
of Tampa. There were a lot of cool cars there but even as
outgoing as I am, I did kind of feel like an outsider, as many
who knew each other were chatting in their small groups as
it typically goes at open functions.
I met Suncoast Member Jeremy Dixon there as we discussed his wheel finish on his beautiful ‘87 Cab, which is long

sold at this point. Jeremy was/is full of knowledge of the middies and he became my very first PCA acquaintance and,
to this day, he is a still very good friend. Come to think of it,
I have developed some great relationships within this club
over the past 10 years and I still look back to that first event
I attended.
I made a promise to myself that as membership chairman I
would do my best to be a chaperone, or whatever one might
call it, to ease members into their very first event. I, of all
people, know how difficult it can be and I am super outgoing!
Please allow myself and other board members to be your

You owe it to yourself to find out what a professional and
friendly group we are blessed with in this chapter. Or, you
can simply email me and ask, “How can I get started?” in the
subject line and we can start from there! Happy New Year!

1946 my father started
an auto repair shop in St
Petersburg. Growing up, I
have always been interested
in cars. After school and on the weekends,
I would watch the mechanics and help
with filing paperwork.
I graduated from George Mason University in Virginia with a degree in history. When I returned to St. Petersburg,
I decided that I would work in the auto
business. My passions are cars, autocross
& birding.
In 1994 my sister Ana Brightleaf took
me to MacDill to autocross with SCCA.
The first day was a practice day, but it
seemed very chaotic to me. On the second day, I felt more confident and really
enjoyed the event. I joined SCCA in 1994
and began to autocross almost every
weekend.
The first Porsche I had was a 1974

914 but I didn’t drive it very often. The
914 was followed by a 1974 Targa, a 1986
Targa, a 2000 Boxster S, and finally a
2004 Carrera. I joined the Porsche Club
in 1995. The car I am most likely to purchase next is the Boxster S or Cayman S
with PDK.

In 1998, I persuaded Joli Laughlin and
Sharron and Danny Shields to go with me
to the Parade in Steamboat Springs (my
first Parade). Of course, we all couldn’t fit
into the Targa. Dan, Sharron and Joli drove
most of the way, taking turns at driving
our Plymouth minivan filled with tires, a
jack, and other items.
Joli and I usually compete in the autocross, the tech quiz and the road rally. Joli,
Dan and Sharron (as drivers) have participated with me in all the rallies that I attended. Sharron said she would never go
on another rally with me again, but, after a
few years, she changed her mind.
We have been to 10 parades beginning in 1998. I love going to the parades
and enjoying the cars, the people and the
venues. It is always a great time.

will be coordinating advertisers with the

PORSCHE PROFILE • JANUARY 2012
Getting to know your PCA Suncoast Region, one member at a time
10 Questions for Manuel Guixens, PCA Suncoast Region member for four years
PORSCHE PROFILE: What’s your occupation
and in which part of the Suncoast Region do
you live?
Manuel Guixens: I am a partner in a regional food distributor and live in Lithia with
my beautiful wife and three kids.
PP: How did you first become a Porsche/Suncoast enthusiast?
MG: I don’t know if it was the poster of a Red
930, my brother and I had on our wall growing up but there was always something special
about a Porsche. I remember having a toy 935
Lowenbrau racecar as a kid and loving that
sloped nose and wide fenders. I think that is
what led to my fascination with Slant Noses.
PP: What models of Porsches have you owned
and what do you currently drive?
MG: I have a 1986 911 Targa in Grand Prix
white. It has less than 45,000 original miles
and is my first Porsche. Last year, after a long
search, I tracked down a 1989 Factory slant
nose. It was not in the best condition but has
been a very rewarding project to restore. After buying it twice, the whole car, then basically
a new car, box by box, it’s pretty much done
and looks like it just rolled out of the factory. I
have no plans to rid of either one. My current
daily driver is a 2008 International MXT pickup
truck. It weighs in at 10,000 lbs. and rides on
40-inch tires.
PP: What is your “dream” car?
MG: That is a tough question. I think I cannot
name just one. If it were a modern car, I would
go with the GT3 RS 4.0. It is a work of art.
From the 80s, the slant nose, of course. Now,
from the 70s down, I would have to say any
version of Ferrari’s 250.
PP: In which PCA/Suncoast activities or events
do you participate?
MG: I really enjoy the concours events and am
venturing out into autocrossing. I have been to
a few autocrosses already and am impressed
by how much better my car is than I am a
driver. Eventually, I would like to run in some
DEs at Sebring.
PP: Is there a Suncoast event in which you excel – or would like to excel?
MG: No first places yet but I would like to excel at the concours events. It’s not so much
winning or the enjoyment of the event but the
quiet time prepping the car. Some people see
therapists; I clean or work on my cars.
PP: What interests you, other than Porsche?
MG: Anything having to do with spending time
with my family. If I can throw cars into the mix,
then I am in Heaven!
PP: Do you prefer the direct way home or the
twists and turns route?
MG: It depends on which car: if it’s the twisties,
then the Targa; if it’s a freeway or an open road,
then definitely the turbo.
PORSCHE PROFILE • JANUARY 2012
PP: In your opinion, how could Porsche improve the driving experience?
MG: Not much room for improvement; just
keep building cars with soul.
PP: Do you have a Porsche story you’d like to
share with our readers?
MG: The original owner of my slant nose lives
in Orlando. I am the fourth owner of the car.
She had the car for about 10 years then sold
it and it ended up in the Carolinas. It changed
hands a few times, then I found it on the Internet and the rest is history.
Once I went through all the documents, I found
her name and number in the owner’s manual.
I decided to call her. As luck would have it, her
number had still been the same all this time.
When she picked up, I said, “You do not know
me but I am the new owner of a black slant
nose you once owned.” There was a gasp and
a long pause. I said, “Ma’am, are you ok?” She
responded, “I loved that car.”
She continued to tell me the story about how
she saw it and drove it right off the showroom
floor. She reluctantly sold the car after having
issues getting in and out of the car. I mentioned
the history of the car after she sold it and my
plans to restore it to its original glory. She was
very happy to hear that her old car was in good
hands. Her only request was that next time I
was in Orlando I was to take her for a ride in
her old car. I plan to call her when we have our
yearly multi-region event in Clermont.

When you are going through NASCAR turns 1 and 2 or 3 and 4, you look

The first time I drove Daytona, it was
early morning, the low sun was streaming through the windshield and I had forgotten to put on my sunglasses. Almost
blinded by the glare as I wound through
the infield portion of the track, I lowered
my visor. As I came out of turn 6, and
went up on the banking, I quickly raised
my visor. Why? Because I had to in order

It looks nice and wide like three lanes

for this great banquet, which had approximately 65 members in attendance. The dealership also provided
some nice door prizes for some lucky

Tim Stoops presided over

all schools.
Saturday, Nov. 12, the Suncoast and
Gold Coast regions jointly held the
annual Instructors day with a large
number of Instructors plus potential
solo drivers striving to be selected as
Instructors. The good news is that 16
new Instructors from four PCA regions
were welcomed into our midst.
A general banquet for everyone
was held at the Inn on Saturday night.
Reeves Motorsports provided very
nice door prizes and made us feel welcome. Reeves also provides water and
ice at every DE our region has held.
That is always much appreciated in that
it keeps the drivers comfortable.
Sunday the 13th, our DE, hosted by
the Suncoast and Goldcoast regions,
had record attendance. Beautiful cool
weather and sunshine looked down on
those beautiful Porsches all day long!
We are indeed fortunate to have
such a fine school with lots of talented

long-awaited Smoky

With those words, the three amigos,
Hercules Mihaelaras (aka Ike), Dick
Brubaker and I, along with our favorite squeezes (yes, I brought the wife),
took off to meet the rest of the gang.
We hooked up with eight more cars
and caravanned northward.
We stopped for the night in Commerce, GA. The next morning the
group swelled to 19 cars and we had
a beautiful ride through South Carolina’s Foothill Parkway on our way to

Blowing Rock and the Woolly Worm
Festival. Traffic was bad but we paraded through town waving to our
adoring fans.
We booked two nights at the
Green Garden Inn. This place is on
the National Historic Register, which
means it’s really old – indoor plumbing was a nice surprise. Their restaurant’s gourmet special was steak with
chocolate sauce (really?). It was pretty
good. The wife had soup.
Monday’s planned adventure had
to be re-routed because Obama
decided to drive through town. You
would not believe the cops, K-9 units,
Secret Service and probably the militia that turned out to guard every
road, tree and rock in the vicinity.

and off we went on our detoured adventure. The ride was fun but on the
way back we got into a huge traffic
jam in Boone caused by Obama; he
stopped for a potty break. That “royal
flush” backed up more than traffic.
Tuesday we visited the Mast Store.
This store has everything; if you don’t
need it, they got it (and she bought
it). The drive afterwards was a doozy.
The objective was to get to the other
side of the mountain by any route.
It’s amazing that we all ended up at
the same restaurant for lunch. After
lunch, it was a perfect day for a trip to
Grandfather Mountain.

Peter Sontag’s Fast Lane Travel. Jan and I
have attended 20 Porsche Parades and
over 25 Porsche Swap Meets hosted by
the Central Pennsylvania Region of PCA,
so we are definitely “Porsche People.”
Last year, after retiring as a busy joint
replacement Orthopedic Surgeon at the
Geisinger Medical Center, having performed over 10,000 joint arthroplasties
over a 46-year career, we began to look at
our personal bucket lists. This year we settled on four days touring Ireland followed
by the 5-day PCA Treffen in Germany.
The trip was excellent, including many
“highs” and just a few “lows.” The outstanding parts were the Museums of Mercedes and Porsche, the Porsche Factory
tour, Autobahn driving in an Avis rental
Porsche, Stuttgart sight seeing, and numerous castle tours.
Lower on the spectrum was a scheduled medieval dinner that featured eating
greasy spare ribs with our fingers, accompanied by amateur singers and actors tell22

ing unfunny anecdotes and serving poor
food and beverages.
A personal low is the absence of English speaking TV and current English newspapers, reminiscent of my year of sea duty
as Ship’s Surgeon on an aircraft carrier, the
USS Yorktown. As a current news addict,
something is missing without that input,
even on a great trip. A final event that
ranks somewhere between high and low
was the Cannstatter Volkfest, a local version of the Munich Octoberfest.
This event is a “state fair” sort of hapPORSCHE PROFILE • JANUARY 2012
pening held in a large amusement park
setting featuring wall-to-wall people, loud
rock bands with ear shattering amplifiers, all crammed into three large picnic
table pavilions.
The floors were sticky with spilled
beer, the waitresses had no space to deliver food and drinks while trying to maneuver through crowds of beer splashing
from huge pitcher sized mugs. Some participants danced on tabletops, waving their
steins and making serving impossible. It
was indeed an event to behold, but I think
one “Octoberfest” may just be enough
for a lifetime.
The highlights of the trip, by far, were
the Museums of Porsche and Mercedes,
the Porsche Factory Tour, and driving
the Autobahn in a rented C4 PDK 997
Cabriolet. The Porsche Museum, like the
Mercedes Museum the day before, was
a stunning example of contemporary
architecture.
Guides provide dialog as one walks
through the temporal landmarks of
Porsche development. Displays start with
the early accomplishments of Ferdinand
Porsche, including the Lohner hybrid vehicle and the Volkswagen Beetle, continuing on to a displayed example of every
significant Porsche automobile, including
the 2011 Boxster Spyder.
For those who profess “It’s not the cars,
it’s the people,” I suggest that a trip to the
Porsche Museum might just alter their
thinking. Good people are to be found everywhere, including your family, your work,
or your hometown. The real Porsche experience is the cars, the result of unique
events of world history, all documented in
this unique shrine located in Zuffenhausen,
a suburb of Stuttgart.
The Factory Tour was entirely fascinating
as one walked through the birthplace of our
impressive reliable, trend-setting Porsches.
Robotic carts, led by magnetic tracks imbedded in the floor, deliver components to
specific stations along the assembly line. It
takes six hours to assemble a Porsche, and
simultaneously in another building, another
three hours to assemble an engine.
Through the consultancy of Toyota,
Porsche adapted the assembly lines to “just
in time of the arrival of components” years
ago. This concept makes huge in-house inventories of parts unnecessary, freeing up
operating capital. A small inventory of seven days worth of production components
is maintained to deal with unexpected delays in delivery of parts.
We were surprised to learn that only 10
percent of Porsches rolling off the assembly
line are road tested today. That is remarkable when one considers that Porsche re-

After the Factory Tour, we were escorted to the guest dining room where a
luncheon of beef medallions and fresh vegetables awaited us. Many people visited the
Museum that day, but only the Fast Lane
Travel group was afforded the pleasure of
the guest dining room. This was an arrangement provided by Peter Sontag, along with

Autobahn driving was a two-day affair
in the Avis rental C4S PDK 997 Cabriolet.
All of my personal Porsches at home are
manual shifters, so this was my first experience with the Tiptronic mode. I now think
that we all have to try this technology at
speed before we submit sarcastic remarks
to surveys such as Bob Gutjahr’s recent
Panorama article.
My Danville 993 Turbo with manual shift
has topped 150 MPH at Watkins Glen and
Pocono International, so I am not a new
member of the 150 MPH club. On the
Autobahn, however, going that speed with
slower cars close by in the right lane is a
little more challenging than driving with
more space on a clear track. I found that I
could pay more attention to traffic and the
road ahead when not thinking about gear
selection.
I recall that when mired in bumper-tobumper traffic on the Baltimore-Washington Expressway, even the purist stick shifter
advocate will endure some shifting pain.
German Autobahn driving is fairly easy to
grasp if one burns a few helpful tips into
his brain. 1: The left lane is only for passing.
2: Never pass on the right. 3: Move over
to the right lane after signaling if someone

Hard-driving Ralph Carr was the P8 winner with a 50.761

his fifth run. Not to be outdone, the I-1 winner Glen Getchell
also toured the grassy embankment but not before posting a

won uncontested in the P3 category as did Jose Velez in P4,
Sharon Shields in P8-L, Mike Rappaport in BMW, and Nick

Frank Quinones scored a P2 victory posting 53.224 in his
silver 968 over Jairius Treat in a blue 928, and Bill Sumansky was
victorious in S3 with a blazing time of 51.338 seconds.
Russell Swope posted the S4 winning fastest 911 time of
the day of 52.230 seconds with consistent and ever improving driving in his 996 C2. I squeaked out a P5 win in my 996
C4S with time of 53.534 seconds over Harvey Cummins in
his 997 C2.

Tuesday we moved our lodging
across town to the Crestwood Inn with
its spectacular views. The bartender in

the sensation simulates hooking your
tongue to a battery charger. To stop
the mouth spasms, you’ll swallow anything. Then you get the real “shock” – a
$12 bar tab.
Wednesday it rained, so we traveled
to West Jefferson City to tour the small
town shops. The shopkeepers were
glad to see the wife. For them, the recession is now over. The wife doesn’t
understand terms such as “maximum
cargo capacity,” “vehicle weight limits”

Thursday was a fun ride along the

cars in a Drivers Education configuration. I felt like a green student all over
again, even though I had been instructing at Sebring for years.
This past October, we had a large
contingent of Suncoast drivers who
made the trek across state to drive the
fabled track. Since one needs to be at
least an advanced solo driver to be allowed on the track, all had lots of experience, and most were instructors.
Several of us had driven the track before, but a number were here for the
first time.
Late Thursday we had an orientation
meeting conducted by none other than
world famous and multiple Daytona 24
Hour winner Hurley Haywood. That was
followed by a great track walk, guided by
seasoned Daytona 24 Hour driver Ron
Zitza of Zots Racing in Orlando. We all
tucked our trusty Porsche steeds in for
the night, praying that the forecasted

cars popping out into the left lane because
they are not aware of the closing speed of
a left lane Porsche traveling at 250 km/h
(155 MPH).
My group of six Porsches was labeled
heavy rains would not materialize.
As I looked out the window the next
morning, I knew immediately that it
was going to be an interesting day. The
ground was already wet from the rains
that had come through. We managed to
get the first run off on time and in relatively dry conditions (if you don’t count
the numerous puddles scattered around
the track).
Everyone came off the track exhilarated and ready for more. Just before
our second run, we had another downpour, so while technically it was not raining as we entered the track, we all had
our windshield wipers on when up on
the banking because of the spray from
cars ahead.
The infield reminded me of my kids
Slip and Slide when they were young.
It definitely was a challenge keeping the
front end of the car pointed in the right
direction - a challenge that not all mastered. Fortunately, all Suncoasters came
home unscathed.
The skies held off for the last two

“The Eagles,” led by German driver Thomas
Hoferlin. The second group of six Porsches
was dubbed “The Yodel Bears,” led by Peter Sontag. When Thomas announced over
the walkie -talkie “O K Eagles, let’s fly!” we
tried to keep the tail lights of Thomas in
sight unless his brake lights came on. This
became easier after a few runs. Unfortunately, traffic was fairly heavy, since this
weekend was a German holiday, “Reunification Day,” celebrating the rejoining of
East and West Germany. The photo of our
speedometer at 251 km/h was taken by
copilot Jan leaning over and not able to get
the best quality picture because of glare.
Following speed runs, we departed
the Autobahn and entered some beautiful country roads. A deja vu feeling came
over me reminiscent of the same mood I
noticed after driving high speed at Watkins
Glen. It was quite pleasant to drive winding country roads at 65 MPH and actually
enjoy the rural surroundings. Parts of Germany are very much like rural Pennsylvania with rolling green farmlands, herds of
runs, and we even managed to get a
short bit of sunshine at noon, as we all
gathered on the start finish line of the
track for a photo op. Unfortunately, that
was the end of the good weather until late Sunday. Most of us gave up by
noon on Saturday, but a few stalwart
souls stuck it out till the better end,
and were rewarded by a couple of late
Sunday runs.
Driving Daytona truly is a kick, and
a totally different experience than our
equally fabled and fun Sebring. Trying to
compare the two is like trying to compare a Monet and a Dali, or for you less
cultured, a Frito and a Hershey bar. They
are both great in their own way, but
sampling one does not prepare you for
the other.
I ran Daytona the first time for the
unique experience. I thought that I
needed to go one more time to get it
out of my system, but especially after
the rain shortened the weekend. In the
words of Arnold, “ Ahl be bock!”
sheep and cattle, and beautiful streams and
forests. What an excellent way to wind down
after getting the speed out of one’s system.
That evening was spent on Lindau Island, a
nice resort area with tourist friendly hotels
and restaurants.
On returning to Stuttgart, there was more
Autobahn driving, so everyone seemed to
get enough of flying low over the German
countryside. We arrived back at The Hotel
Graff Zeppelin in Stuttgart and turned in our
Porsches. A word about Stuttgart, a world
class city. Stuttgart is a pleasant blend of old
and new. I consider it every bit as desirable
to visit as London, Rome, or Paris; and the
people are friendly! From the front of our
hotel, one could see a green hillside vineyard. Cultural sights abound, dining is superb,
and shopping opportunities are unlimited,
albeit expensive.
On Konigstrasse Schlossplatz, there was
a farmer’s market, a flea market, street musicians, and more stores than one could
possibly visit.
I suppose some folks would prefer mak-

ing their own travel arrangements under the
guise of independence or saving money, but
we would discourage that. The use of an experienced travel agency, like Fast Lane Travel,
is strongly recommended. Otherwise, the
potential for wasted time and poor decisions
is too great. An added perk with Fast Lane
Travel are the gifts left on your bed in the hotels at the end of each day, including a base-

ball cap, beer stein, polo shirt, embroidered
denim shirt, travel bag, embroidered patches,
umbrella, and if you like them, fanny packs. It
was a good trip!

Panamera GTS: Porsche’s Sporty Performance Sedan
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Porsche
unveiled the Porsche Panamera GTS,
the purest expression of a sports sedan in the Porsche family with a clear
focus on performance, at the Los Angeles Auto Show this past November.
The new Panamera GTS is based
on the Panamera 4S and includes
more power, upgraded brakes and a
body lowered by ten millimeters with
new, sportier chassis tuning coupled
to air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).
These technical modifications make
the Panamera model even more capable of cutting it on the racetrack
without sacrificing practicality.
The sportiest of all Panamera
models also conveys this to occupants
and the outside world by its striking
sound. In terms of looks, the new Panamera GTS includes distinctive design
features at the front, side and rear as
well as black highlights. The interior is
also tailored to its sporty personality
with adaptive sports seats, SportDesign steering wheel with shift paddles
and exclusive GTS leather interior
with Alcantara surfaces.
28
The Panamera GTS is powered
by a modified 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, delivering 430 hp
at 6,700 rpm, increasing the output
over the Panamera S/4S by 30 hp.
The maximum torque also increases
by comparison, from 369 to 384 lb.
ft. At the push of a button, thanks to
the standard Sport Chrono package,
the 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission
transmits the engine output to the
all-wheel drive system during gear
changes without interruption to the
power flow. This collaboration enables the Panamera GTS to sprint to
60 mph in 4.3 seconds, accelerating
on to its top track speed of 178 mph.
The 0-60 figures and top speed
only scratch the surface of the new
Panamera GTS’s sporty character. Its
chassis in particular makes it fit for the
racetrack: the adaptive air suspension
and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) connect the chassis
and body, constantly adapting to the
driving challenges by regulating leveling settings, adjusting height, modifying
the spring rate and electrically moduPORSCHE PROFILE • JANUARY 2012
lating the damping system.
The body has been lowered by ten
millimeters and the damping designed
to be tauter, which helps agility and
further reinforces the sporty personality of the Panamera GTS. Five millimeter wheel spacers between the
wheel and the wheel hubs increase
the rear axle track width, giving the
Panamera even more stability. The
required grip is provided by standard
255/45 size 19-inch tires on the front
axle and 285/40 on the rear axle.
Optional 20-inch wheels are available
with 255/40 tires on the front and
295/35 on the rear.
Deceleration on the sporty Panamera is provided by the braking system from the Panamera Turbo, which
includes larger diameter front brake
rotors than Panamera S/4S. Like all
other Porsche models, the Panamera
is available with the optional Porsche
Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB),
featuring brake calipers finished in
yellow.
For more information on the Panamera GTS, visit the Porsche Club of
America web site.
