MASS SCHEDULE Dear Friends, Saturday Vigil: 5PM Sunday: 7AM, 9AM, 10:45AM & 5PM Happy Easter! Christ is RISEN! Alleluia! Daily Mass in the Chapel at 8AM Monday - Saturday Confessions: Saturday 3:30PM PASTORAL STAFF Parochial Administrator Rev. Fr. Johnson Abraham [email protected] Business Manager Marlene McCann [email protected] Director of Religious Education Lila Rutkowska [email protected] Secretary-Religious Education Donna Cassianos [email protected] Director of Music Ministry May Hembrador [email protected] Liturgical Musician Lily Melendrez Easter is the feast of HOPE. St. Paul says Christ died for all, (2 Corinthians 5:14) indicating that every human has value, whether black, white, rich or poor. The Easter message is a radical declaration of how God sees every person and, yes, we experience this personally in terms of our own faith. It also underpins our world view in the context of mission and life of Jesus. Easter gives all who have suffered pain a sense that we are not on our own and, despite our emotions and feelings, God does understand. The Easter story gives us a glimpse of God’s broken heart, the physical suffering of Jesus demonstrating that he understands what it is to feel physical and emotional pain. The resurrection is a promise of presence; we are not on our own. The Easter story is the culmination of God’s restoration of humans to the possibility and potential of friendship with God. It can be argued that God’s redemptive plan is all about the restoration of friendship and relationship, so we could look at some word content around this theme and how we can develop a relationship with the living Christ. So we can describe the possibility of friendship, but also the problem: why is that friendship not automatic? It is our selfishness–living for ourselves–that separates us from God’s love and friendship. Easter is the story of how that is dealt with. Pastoral Council President David Wood [email protected] The challenge of the Christian message–the wonder of Easter–is that Christ died so that we no longer live for ourselves; we live for something bigger. We also recognize that selfishness is destroying our world, whether at government level or on a personal level. We can lose hope: how can selfishness out there… how can selfishness in my own life… be dealt with? The Easter story gives us an answer. Christ died that we might no longer live for ourselves. He gives us a new focus as we live for him and his principles. As we take on that new focus, it will help us to not be as selfish; not to live for ourselves as, perhaps, we have done and, in this way, we will all make the world a better place. Adoration started on Advent of 2008. We are thus honored to provide a chapel where parishioners and non-parishioners are able to drop in for a visit or sign up for a committed time. Many of our parishioners are signed up for an hour a week or more. We’d like each of you to consider being part of the hundreds already devoted to this “extraordinary” gift Our Lord has left us. This is an opportunity to experience joy, peace, and the ineffable glory of God. DAILY MASS IN THE CHURCH Monday - Saturday at 8:00 AM. MARTINEZ SHELTER MEALS Individuals or teams are needed to purchase and prepare food to serve one 6 PM dinner meal to homeless families. Volunteers are wanted year-round in March, June, September, and December. Please call Yvonne Mennel: 925-689-2795 or [email protected] WHAT DO YOU KNOW? “What do you know?” is the question linking all three readings today. Imagine the shock waves that shot through the city of Jerusalem that first Easter morning. Jesus’ body was missing! By the time Peter spoke the words found in today’s first reading, fifty days had passed, so he began by saying, in effect, “I take it you know what has been reported all over Judea about Jesus of Nazareth.” Of course they knew by then, but in today’s Gospel we are taken back to the first day. We meet Mary Magdalene exclaiming, “We don’t know where they put him!” What do we know? In the second reading Paul asks, “Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough?” Do we know the power of our own faith? Do we know the effect we can have on others? ST. VINCENT DE PAUL MINISTRY If you or anyone you know needs help "filling in the gap", call St. Agnes St. Vincent de Paul at (925)689-0838 x 250. We will arrange a confidential home visit to see how best we can help. If you would like to serve in this ministry, including blanket drives, serving meals, helping the Rotacare Medical Clinic, raising funds, making home visits, contact the Waltons at (925) 825-7931 or [email protected]. Joy of the Gospel: Pope Francis One of the main themes of this document is Evangelization. 1. The Basic Proclamation of the Gospel (Krygma) For Pope Francis, evangelization begins by sharing the basic message of the Gospel. “In catechesis too, we have rediscovered the fundamental role of the first announcement or kerygma, which needs to be the center of all evangelizing activity and all efforts at Church renewal… On the lips of the catechist the first proclamation must ring out over and over: “Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen and free you” (#164). He goes on to note the importance of the krygma throughout the life of a Christian: “It is first in a qualitative sense because it is the principal proclamation, the one which we must hear again and again in different ways, the one which we must announce one way or another throughout the process of catechesis, at every level and moment” (#164). Don’t worry he practices what he preaches. In the third paragraph he states: I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since “no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord” (#3). 2. Two Sources of Evangelization First, we can evangelize only because of God first loved us. An evangelizing community knows that the Lord has taken the initiative, he has loved us first (cf. 1 Jn 4:19), and therefore we can move forward, boldly take the initiative, go out to others, seek those who have fallen away, stand at the crossroads and welcome the outcast. Second, our evangelization depends on Our ability to accept the Gospel into our lives. “Here we find the source and inspiration of all our efforts at evangelization. For if we have received the love which restores meaning to our lives, how can we fail to share that love with others?” (#9). 3. Missionary Disciple The term “missionary disciple” is used throughout the document. The two terms are used to hold in tension the need both for a relationships with our Lord and the need to go to the outskirts to preach the Gospel. One thing is very clear. Every Baptized member of the Catholic faith is called to evangelize and is called to be a missionary disciple. “In virtue of their baptism, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples (cf. Mt 28:19). All the baptized, whatever their position in the Church or their level of instruction in the faith, are agents of evangelization" (#120). “What I would like to propose is something much more in the line of an evangelical discernment. It is the approach of a missionary disciple, an approach ‘nourished by the light and strength of the Holy Spirit’” (#51). “The Church is herself a missionary disciple” (#40). 8
