So far in 2016, six of the nine storefronts that have closed were run by small business owners. Many have said it’s a struggle to compete with the big corporations moving in like Whole Foods and Target, but Pockets Franchise owner, Matthew Fritzinger, is optimistic about his business. Pockets has been in the neighborhood at 1307 E. 53rd St., for 17 years, and Fritzinger has owned the business for the past five. Pockets is known for its healthy fast food options including salads, calzones and baked multi-grain bread filled with vegetables, cheeses and meats known as a “pocket”. “The people in Hyde Park are the most important thing to this business,” Fritzinger said. Fritzinger said that as a small business, he works with local schools such as Kenwood Academy, 5105 S. Blackstone Ave., and Murray Elementary, 5335 S. Kenwood Ave., to cater their fundraising events, and said that in the summer months he hires students from Kenwood almost exclusively to work in his store. “I’m not doing these things to get anything out of it, I’m doing it because I think it’s the right thing to do as a member of this community,” he said. He said small businesses know their communities and customers better than big corporations. “I have relationships with the customers and know about 150 people’s orders by heart; like that guy, he’s about to get our Asian salad,” said Fritzinger, right before greeting a customer who indeed did order an Asian salad. While keeping up with his customers is something that Fritzinger delights in, he said its getting hard to keep his franchise going in the Hyde Park community when rent prices are rising. Fritzinger said that the University of Chicago, has increased his rent by 35 percent, which reflects the fair market rent. Fritzinger fears that corporations will move in on the development happening around 53rd Street and become competition. “Corporate stores and restaurants only need to break even in the long run because other locations they have do well,” Fritzinger said. “It’s a lot different for smaller businesses.” While one of seven Chicagoland locations, Fritzinger said that Pockets Hyde Park is number two in sales and number one in reputa- Pockets Hyde Park, 1307 E. 53rd St. tion. He added that Kingoberry Frozen Yogurt, which he added to Pockets three and a half years ago, is the only place in Hyde Park that offers frozen yogurt year round. Fritzinger hopes that partnerships with Grubhub and UberEATS will help market his business better, and that his involvement with the community will help as well. Spencer Bibbs “We are a part of the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce and we participate in the First Thursday event every month,” he said. “We will also be a part of the upcoming Dinner Crawl in October where people can sample our famous pockets.” [email protected] NKOCCC supports Binny's move Open House By MEREDITH OGILVIE Staff Writer Vicente Magana (center) practices his writing, while his mother Evelyn Magana (right) and teacher Marie Magana look on during the preschool open house, Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Chicago Childcare Society, 5467 S. University Ave. Owen M. Lawson III The North Kenwood Oakland Conservation Community Council voted last night to support Michael Binstein, owner of Binny’s Beverage Depot, as he moves forward with plans to relocate the store at 1531 E. 53rd St., which is an “Express” location, to the vacant storefront next to Ross Dress For Less at 1300 E. 47th St. Binstein began his presentation by telling the group of over 40 attendees at the meeting the rich family history of Binny’s and how it had grown from a two-person operation on the north side in 1948 to the numerous brick and mortar shops all over Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Support for the relocation was overwhelmingly positive until a community member, who identified herself as a Masjid Al-Faatir mosque member, said, “Almost every major crime involves alcohol and drugs and you want to bring in a huge liquor store. No one has said Omar Muhammad (left) stands to make a comment regarding Binny’s Beverage Depot’s move to Kenwood during a North Kenwood Oakland Conservation Community Council meeting Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Kennicott Marc Monaghan Park Fieldhouse, 4434 S. It was the day she returned from work to find someone had entered her home, riffled through her belongings and left with not only her valuables but also her sense of safety. “They walked right in, past security, came up the elevator and walked right into my apartment," Walls said. "They took a laptop, jewelry, money, even my fur coat I had hanging right here in the closet.” Walls lives in the 5000 Block of Lake Shore Drive, which has seen its fair share of crime since the seasonal warm up last May. In the span of one week toward the end of May, four apartments were broken into and the Chicago Police Department (CPD) issued a community alert on June 2 urging residents to keep the perimeter of their properties well lit and to keep doors and windows secured. The rash of unlawful entries have continued throughout the summer. Police reports show that on the same day Walls reported her breakin another person in her building also filed an unlawful entry report. Walls said other neighbors have also told her their apartments were broken into. She said that while the building's management company, MAC Properties, did send out an alert of previous robberies, they did not treat the matter with the importance it deserved. “An email was sent out on May 29 to notify residents in my building of what happened but I never saw it," Walls said, mentioning that there are a large number of senior citizens that live in the building. "Something that important should be printed out and put under every unit in the building.” Peter Cassel, director of community development at Mac Properties, said that the management company does not have a specific resident communication policy in place because they look at each incident on a case-by-case basis and decide the most appropriate method of communication. When the laundry facility was broken into and laundry money was stolen at Poinsettia Apartments, 5528 S. Hyde Park Blvd., which is another property managed by Mac, residents were notified by a note posted in the laundry room with details of the break in and surveillance images. “We work closely with the [Chicago Police Department], the University of Chicago Police Department and property owners and managers to coordinate with resi- dents to keep Hyde Park as safe as possible," Cassel said. Unfortunately, these are not isolated incidents. According to the Chicago Police Department Clearmap website, a listing of crime incidents that can be searched by ward, address, district and other details, showed over 50 reported incidents of theft from 47th Street to 55th Street and from Dorchester Avenue to Lake Shore Drive since May. [email protected] Array of Things installs environmental data collecting nodes By SARAH PAN Herald Intern Last week, the University of Chicago project, Array of Things, installed its first nodes to measure environmental data in a number of neighborhoods around Chicago. 50 will be installed through September, to a total of 500 throughout the city by the end of 2018. In partnership with the U. of C., Argonne National Laboratory and the City of Chicago, the Array of Things has been a project dedicated to creating physical nodes for tracking different kinds of data. The nodes measure data such as air quality, climate, traffic, sky color, ozone levels, sound intensity and more. “The University of Chicago has a long and flourishing tradition of scholarship that engages with urban life and makes a positive impact,” University of Chicago President Robert J. Zimmer said. “The Array of Things project advances these ideals by gathering a broad scope of data about the urban environment, in a form that researchers, policymakers and residents can use to develop innovative ways of improving our city and urban areas around the world.” The data collected will help both city officials and researchers work to solve different environmental problems. Data will be available to the public for free through the City of Chicago Data Portal and Plenar.io. “The Array of Things project is just one example of the advancements that are possible when the city, university and Argonne combine their diverse and complementary perspectives, experience and expertise,” said Argonne Director Peter B. Littlewood. “I’m excited to see the Array of Things fulfill its potential to help make Chicago cleaner, healthier and more livable, and I also look forward to future game-changing collaborations with our local partners.” Early nodes will be located at The Loop, Logan Square and along Lake Michigan. Additional nodes will soon make their way to other major U.S. cities and countries. [email protected] Hyde Park seniors find niche in Encore Chorale By ALLISON MATYUS Staff Writer Hyde Park’s Encore Chorale is approaching its third session starting Sept. 14, and its success speaks—or sings—volumes in the positive experiences of the chorale singers. Cindy Pardo has been singing for years, taking voice lessons and is an active member in the choir at First Unitarian Church, 5650 S. Woodlawn Ave., so signing up for the chorale’s first two sessions was an easy decision. “I thought the experience was ter- rific,” Pardo said. “When all was said and done, everything blended and everyone sounded good.” Pardo participated in the two previous sessions but said she still learned new techniques through the chorale’s conductor, Jonathan Miller. “It’s always a pleasure to work with someone who is really good at what they do,” Pardo said. The chorale is a no-audition group, which means singers’ levels range from Pardo’s extensive background, to people. Such as Sharon Glick, who just want to try some- thing new. “I’m retired now and I never had a single thought of joining a singing group but I just figured why not and it has been really delightful,” Glick said. She said she has learned how to read music and how to collaborate as a group to make the song just right. “You have to listen to each other and work together to sing a song. It’s challenging, but it’s fun and stimulating,” she said. A better voice isn’t all the singers come away with, though. Countless studies have proven that there are health benefits to belonging to a choir, especially for older adults. “It’s certainly good for your brain when you have to put together how your voice sounds and what the words are,” Pardo said. “The brain remembers music even if some of our other senses aren’t as sharp anymore.” The social element of being in a chorale is also beneficial. “I have met a lot of really nice people that I wouldn’t have necessarily met otherwise,” Glick said. The Hyde Park Encore Chorale, which is co-sponsored by the Chicago Hyde Park Village, meets every Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Montgomery Place, 5550 S. Staff and residents mingled while eating buffet-style lunch, enjoying entertainment from a balloon artist and magician, and played a team game of beanbag toss. “It’s a celebration of years and years of providing services, a home, a safe haven for seniors in our community,” Shiela Bogen, administrator for the health care pavilion and chief operating officer for CCRC, said. “It’s a special place for seniors from Hyde Park especially to come and spend their golden years.” A lot of residents at Montgomery Place, 5550 S. Shore Dr., are directly from the Hyde Park area, many having worked at the University of Chicago. “The residents here are very seasoned,” Mary Domino, director of dining services, said. “They’re doctors, lawyers, professors, and they basically all grew up in Hyde Park and come here when they grow older. That’s really unique; they’re very sophisticated.” The staff and residents foster close relationships, which is especially apparent at events such as the anniversary celebration. “What you’ll see is in Montgomery Place everybody’s fam- Fall in Love with Your Yard again! • Fall Fertilizizng • Trimming • Mulch • Winterizing • Mums & Bulbs • Fall Planters “Small Landscaping Jobs are Our Specialty!! Just to get to know about what they go through makes me get up and want to get to work and service them. It’s all about the residents.” Residents recognized the importance of the anniversary, and how Montgomery Place has evolved. “I think we should be proud of what’s happened in the 25 years since the start,” resident Mae Wygant said. “It’s evolved from a much, much smaller community of seniors, to this larger community for which the residents have had a major part and helped with making it grow.” With 25 years behind them, Montgomery Place looks forward, said the Montgomery Place’s new CEO Deborah Hart. “I look at it as a beginning for the next 25,” Hart said. “We don’t want to stop where we are, but build what we have. The good news is that it is very likely that the fence surrounding the Island and lagoon will come down sometime next month. The not-such-good-news, depending on one’s perspective, is that the occasion for this will be the undoubtedly media-heavy event surrounding the “unveiling” of the Yoko Ono Sky Landing sculpture on the Island. The work of creating the concrete foundation for the Yoko Ono piece is now underway. The base will be clad in marble. Eventually, if not in time for the “unveiling,” the fence and walkway now on the west side of the Japanese Garden will be removed, and a new fence enclosing the Garden and the sculpture will be erected, dramatically changing the experience of being in the Garden. Lovers of the traditional Osaka Garden may be unhappy; those who fancy the new may be pleased. In any event, the north end of the Wooded Island will have been permanently changed. Policy questions remain: Who is paying for the major infrastructure work that the installation requires? Who is paying for the sculpture? Who will own it and maintain it? What about security? With the Darrow Bridge closed, where will visitors park? What about public restrooms? Jackson Park Watch has asked these questions of the Park District Board of Commissioners numerous times, with no response. Other questions concern the consequences, not only for the Garden, which may well become not only a tourist attraction but a revenuegenerating event location, but also importantly for the tranquility of the Wooded Island and for the birds and other wildlife that find shelter in the nature sanctuary it hosts . And finally, all of this has occurred with no community input, but instead, apparently under the sweeping authority granted Project 120 by the secretive MOU executed between the Park District and Project 120 in 2014. We already have commitments concerning community input on Project 120’s proposed Celebrating the return of the nurse midwife unit at U. of C. To the Editor: I celebrate The University of Chicago Hospitals for re-opening its nurse midwife unit this month. I was one of the pregnant and new mothers who led the protest to stop the closure of the practice 13 years ago. I feel vindicated and elated that the University of Chicago (U. of C.) now sees nurse midwifery as essential in obstetric care and childbirth. Nurse midwifery is seen as a less medically interventionist approach. Closing that practice caused many in the neighborhood to seek that kind of care elsewhere. In 2003 when the new head of obstetrics at the University of Chicago Hospitals decided to close their nurse midwife practice they said it was because of the costs. It angered past and present patients because we valued their downto-earth and accessible approach. We were mostly low risk women who held in high regard their personal services in a high tech hospital setting in our neighborhood. Recently when I spoke with Erin Irwin MSN, CNM, Director, Midwifery Services at University of Chicago Medical Center, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology she told me our protests made a difference to her personally. She watched the Hyde Park pro-midwife activism with envy as a clinic in a low-income neighborhood of Chicago where she worked at the same time was closing and no one made a peep. She also said the U. of C. Midwife practice has its work cut out for them in terms of gaining the trust and business from the neighborhood. After having spoken to Irwin I feel bolstered by her motivation as a caregiver. She recalled a pivitol experience at the start of her career, being touched by a low-income mother whose baby Irwin helped deliver. “Thank you for taking such good care of me even though I have a public aid card,” the woman told Irwin who was stunned by the woman’s expectation of lesser care. Thirteen years ago, the closing felt demoralizing. But now as the practice reopens, hearing the administration’s support and Irwin belief that a nurse midwife’s care during childbirth is a human right, I feel more correct than ever that I was a part of a righteous battle. Now I know that our efforts paid off. Lake Michigan where they spent several weeks each summer and where she hosted numerous extended family gatherings over the years. She was born on November 7, 1942 in Horten, Norway, the daughter of Murray and Ingrid (Karlsen) Nilsen. At age six, she immigrated with her family to the United States, moving to Jersey City, N.J., where she lived until graduation from Lincoln High School. Wenche then attended Hope College in Holland, Mich., where she met her future husband Larry and graduated with a major in French. She pursued graduate studies in French at Kent State University in Ohio before she and Larry were married in New Jersey in 1966. She and Larry settled in Chicago, where they had two children, Heidi Ruth and Jon Peter. She spent her career teaching middle and high school French and language arts, first at Eisenhower High School, and later at the Academy of Our Lady, Alvernia High School and finally at Sacred Heart Schools on Sheridan Road, from which she retired in 2013. While at Sacred Heart, she developed a middle school language arts curriculum built around Greek and Roman classical studies, a project that drew upon her interest in ancient history. After her retirement, she was appointed to the Board of Sacred Heart Schools, serving there the rest of her life. He felt coming here was a good choice for him academically.” For the 2016-17-football season, Snyder was looking for a place to play. And after a couple of visits to the school, including meetings with the coaches, teachers and staff members, Snyder made Kenwood, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave., his new home. “I was really impressed with how the coaches, teachers and staff treated me upon my arrival here,” said Snyder, who is a senior at Kenwood. “They have really welcomed me with open arms. It feels great, especially not knowing where I would play before the season started.” Snyder said his first two-years of high school at Hales was spent with doubt and uncertainty. “We didn’t know if we would have a [football] season that year,” Snyder said. “So my parents transferred me to Leo High School for one year and would eventually find the right place for me my senior year.” Kenwood coach Jack Ramsey who recruited Snyder, said he is training Snyder to become a quarterback. “At Hales and Leo he played a little wide receiver and quarterback,” Ramsey said. “He is currently in the process of making the transition from being a wide receiver to a starting quarterback while getting acclimated to our system.” Ramsey also explained that he is preparing Snyder to run the spread offense. He said that Snyder was a little rattled at first but made the necessary adjustments throughout Saturday’s game. “The sky is the limit for this kid,” Ramsey said. “He just has to mature and learn a little more composure.” These changes within the offense is a different philosophy from last year’s team, as the Broncos featured mobile quarterback Dejuan McCollum, who ran the “read offense” made famous by former NFL Super Bowl Champion Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks. “Our [quarterback] this year is not as mobile as Dejuan was last year,” said Kenwood linebacker and former Hales Franciscan Spartan Amari Brown. “But he’s great at making adjustments on the fly.” [email protected] Say It! The event will take place at the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, 5480 S. Kenwood Ave. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday Sept. 10. Sarah Diwan, executive director of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club and co-host of the event, said the club is proud to help the Neighborhood Parents Network of Chicago provide an accessible place for the fair. “Most of their enrollment comes from the South Loop, Downtown and Bronzeville area,” Diwan said. “They are now expanding their services to the Hyde Park area with hopes of enrolling children from the neighborhood.” The fair will feature over 60 local schools, enrichment programs, and provide parents with resources that can help them in the school search process. The event also will give attendees the opportunity to discuss school options with representatives from the public and private school sector, non-profit organizations and business professionals. Services and activities will also be offered, at the event, to participants with small children. The fair is free and open to the public. To RSVP visit www.npnparents.org. [email protected] Say It! Plants available at the annual fair include 154 varieties of flowers like chrysanthemums, tulips, hyacinths, crocuses and daffodils. Flowers that are planted after the fair will begin to bloom in the early spring months to welcome in a new season. “We gardeners look forward to an early spring filled with flowering bulbs, some actually coming up through the snow,” said Joy Rosner, chairwoman of the Fall Hyde Park Garden Fair. “By late February or early March, bulbs purchased at the fair and planted this fall will cheer you up after what seems like an endless winter.” Rosner said that all plants and flowers are hand picked and sold at the fair. She said that the bulbs are imported straight from the Netherlands. The chrysanthemums planted after the fair can last about four to six weeks, depending on the weather, as these mums can survive several light frosts. There will also be a selection of indoor plants that can be grown throughout the year. Rosner said Garden Fair Committee members and volunteers will be available to answer questions about fall planting and which flowers to choose for your garden. The fair will take place in the courtyard of the Hyde Park Shopping Center, 5500 S. Lake Park Ave., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 17. Lake Park Ave. Herald file photo By MEREDITH OGILVIE Staff Writer Saturday, Aug. 27 was not only the last Saturday of the month, it was also the standing date of the monthly charity event #HashtagLunchbag held at The Promontory. What started in 2012 as a way for a group of friends to give back around the holiday season has grown into a phenomenon, thanks to the impact of social media. Despite the rain, a large group of volunteers piled onto the top floor of The Promontory, 5311 S. Lake Park Ave., to participate in the charity event. When volunteers walked through the doors to the music venue, an organizer taking the suggested cash donation of $10 to cover the cost of food and supplies greeted them. Once inside, volunteers stopped by a designated area that had been set up by the organizers to talk about the history of the movement, then they were each given five bags to decorate. While a DJ spun upbeat R&B tunes, participants were invited to find a place at the bar and around the venue to set up shop and decorate the lunch bags. They created unique designs and wrote inspirational notes to send along with the lunch bag, using brightly colored markers given to them by the organizers. “I really like that aspect of the event,” said first time participant Moheen Ramsey. “I’ve been involved with charities before, but writing the inspirational notes and decorating the bags gives it a human touch. HashtagLunchbag is like no other charity I’ve ever worked with.” After the decorating, volunteers were given Hyde Park Youth Symphony 2016-17 Auditions Join the symphony for our 62nd season Audition Information September 8th, 4:00pm - 8:00pm 915 East 60th Street, Chicago, IL 60637 Logan Center for the Arts To register for auditions, go to www.thehpys.org For questions contact [email protected], 773-595-1318 tag #hashtaglunchbag and to record videos for Snapchat. This aspect of the event has been the key to the growth of this community service project. Once the supplies ran out, the participants were invited to take a group photo to commemorate the day. The lunches were then loaded into volunteer vehicles and driven to local shelters within the hour to insure freshness. The next #hashtaglunchbag event is scheduled for Sept. 24 at The Promontory. The drive will culminate with a massive block party with food and games on 75th Street and Stewart Avenue. CHICAGO THE UNIVERSITY OF Laboratory Schools “We fed our kids all summer, preventing shootings, and we plan to keep going by getting our kids ready for school with school supplies and uniforms,” said Tamar Manasseh, founder of M.A.S.K. “What has been amazing is how much the community, not just Englewood, but Bronzeville, Hyde Park, Logan Square and really all of Chicago has stepped up to parent these kids.” Michelle Hoffman, a M.A.S.K. member that helped organize the supply drive with parents from all over the city, said she is inspired and encouraged by how successful the drive has been. “When we started organizing this Back to School drive, we thought, ‘well maybe we can help 20 or 30 kids’ but we have been inundated with donations and can help so many more,” Hoffmann said. “I think people understand that these kids who come to 75th and Stewart are all of our kids, no matter where you live in Chicago. That’s the whole foundation of M.A.S.K. and it’s great to see it in action.” Recently, M.A.S.K. has been out at various places in Hyde Park to raise awareness and strengthen ties between south side neighborhoods. Rebecca Janowitz created the Children’s Book Fair in 1986. She said the story of its inception is, “Very Hyde Park.” “There was a leasing dispute over O’Gara’s Bookstore on 57th Street so Hyde Parkers rallied together to save the store,” Janowitz said. “As a result, we had a mailing list of all these book lovers so we decided to do something with it.” She said at first, the idea for a book fair dedicated to murder mysteries was tossed around, but in the end the Hyde Park Children’s Book Fair was born to celebrate the first month that kids are back in school. Since it began, on 57th Street between Kimbark and Dorchester avenues, the book fair has featured local, independent bookstores, Chicago authors and storytellers. The committee has since moved the fair to Nichols Park, 1355 E. 53rd St. This year, Hyde Park author Kate Hannigan will be at the fair to sign her book “The Detective’s Assistant.” Chicago-based author Janet Nolan will also be at the fair to sign “Seven & a Half Tons of Steel.” One of the highlights of the fair is the fairytale characters that show up to interact with children. The 13 films chosen will be shown in nine parks around Chicago from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3, including Midway Plaisance Park. “Chicago Onscreen is a unique part of one of our city’s most popular summer traditions, and it contributes to our thriving film industry,” Emanuel said in a written statement. “I’m so proud to welcome its return in 2016. Through Chicago Onscreen we are providing a platform for local artists to showcase their work and a big screen window into the richly diverse and talented neighborhoods throughout Chicago.” The films for the program are created and produced locally, and revolve around Chicago. “We are very proud to continue to support the artistic endeavors of local filmmakers through this dynamic program,” Kelly said. “Big screens, provided by our Movies in the Parks program, help activate our parks during summer nights by providing an outdoor stage for creative projects to be seen and local stories to be told.” Films this year focus on four themes: identity, memory, victory and vitality. On Sept. 3, six short identity films will be shown in Midway Park, 1130 Midway Plaisance North. The short films include “The Amazing Mr. Ash”, “Baby Mary”, “Bedrooms”, “Crystal Lake”, “I’m an Actor: Yo Soy Actor”, and “Oreo” for a total runtime of an hour and 21 minutes. Beyond a Mammogram’s mission is to increase awareness of the risks of breast cancer, and the importance of regularly performing BINNY’S from page 1 close. He said Binny's does this because it wants to create a welcoming and safe environment for adults to purchase alcohol. He added that his stores also do not serve 40 ounces and various other malt liquors that attract a certain crowd. After the discussion period, the council voted in favor of the store relocation. There was only one dissenting vote among the board. Now that Binstein has the council's approval, he and Gregory Newsome, owner of the shopping center at 47th Street and Lake Park Avenue, plan to work with Ald. Sophia King (4th) to lift the area's moratorium on liquor sales. “The 2nd district is dry and has been for some time,” Newsome said. The moratorium vacillates back and fourth between being implemented and being lifted and is in a constant state of flux. The moratorium was lifted temporarily when Wal-Mart was built on 47th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue and relaxed to allow the Walgreens breast self-exams for cancer.
