2015 Annual Report
fun 2015 Annual Report April 1, 2014 - March 31, 2015 hope heart One Heartland is a place where kids get to set aside their struggles and just be kids. – One Heartland parent Where belonging begins One Heartland came into being in 1993 when founder Neil Willenson found out that an HIV positive sevenyear-old was being denied access to summer camp because of unwarranted fear. That child just wanted a place where he could be himself and have fun. He wanted a place to belong. So Neil created one. Twenty-two years later, there are still young people looking for a place to belong. One Heartland is doing its best year in and year out to be that place. We want to give our participants the experience of a life time. We want to prepare them to go out into the world. But mostly, we want to be where belonging begins. Thanks to you, we get to be. 2015 has seen changes big and small for One Heartland. We’ve added new staff who are already revitalizing the organization with their passion and heart. We’ve recieved generous capital and monetary donations that have allowed us to upgrade our kitchen, archery range, boat house, and more. But the most important changes we make are those we make in children’s lives. Those are the changes we want to share with you in the pages of this report. Those are the reasons you give, and the reasons we come to work every morning. With heartfelt thanks, Patrick Kindler Executive Director “You’ll find some of the most genuine relationships you can ever find on this Earth in one place” –One Heartland participant Safety A Place to Return to Summer 2015 marks Kameron’s tenth summer as a camper with One Heartland. He was a camper at Camp Heartland for eight years and at Camp Hollywood HEART for one year. In 2015, he returned in a new role – as a Leader In Training (LIT). LITs develop the skills necessary to be future leaders at camp and to integrate those skills into their everyday lives. “Initially, the reason why I wanted to become an LIT was the same reason that I’ve kept coming to Camp Heartland year after year since I was a kid,” Kameron said. “Simply put, Camp Heartland was, and continues to be, my family. In the 9 years that I’ve attended Camp Heartland, I’ve made more lifelong friends and had more life-changing experiences than I can count. “It wasn’t until All Camp Day during my first year as an AP [Adventure Program] that I found a different reason to want to be an LIT. Being 14 at the time, I was certain that going through activities meant for children as young as 7 years old would both boring and unpleasant. However, as I saw the younger campers in my group working through puzzles and activities, I was reminded of my days as a young camper. Recalling how much I enjoyed camp as a kid, I made it my mission to help the other campers have as special an experience as I could.” “I want to know that I’ve at least made one person happier every day.” –Kameron Participation the year in numbers: 49% $500 39% 450 average cost of one camp experience including travel percentage of volunteers who were former participants servings of food served each day on average percentage of camp participants local to the Midwest 75 77% Angel Flights donated percentage of camp participants from ethnic minorities One Heartland volunt-hero Keith Leifer knows how to throw a party. For the last 10 years, Keith has been hosting an annual Party With Heart to benefit One Heartland in Milwaukee, Wisc. Over that time, he has raised $25,000 to support One Heartland’s camp programs. Thank you Keith, you’re a true volunt-hero! 476 588 camp experiences provided at low or no cost to families in 2014 thanks to our generous donors and sponsors 93 Z Z number of beds made to welcome our participants Z nights of camp countless memories Acceptance The Magic of Camp “I fell in love with the magic of camp, how fun it was, how much I grew as a person. I knew I wasn’t done growing.” Program Coordinator Allison Jones’s story is all about growth. She first came to One Heartland as part of an Americorps NCCC team doing service projects at camp. She did maintenance and upkeep around camp and also got to be a counselor for two weeks. After that experience, there was no going back. Allison came back as a summer counselor in 2013 and 2014 and was hired full time in October of 2014. “I’m in charge of making sure camp is fun. I make sure that I have fun at least most of the day. “I never had the opportunity to go to summer camp as a kid. I got to live out my childhood dream. I always just like to say that I’m making up for lost time. I have a few extra responsibilities, but as a counselor I got to experience what it was like to be in a cabin and do the activities.” Allison exemplifies one of One Heartland’s greatest strengths: everyone who comes is part of the family. You keep coming back, growing, and enriching the lives of others in turn. That’s the magic of camp.
