This manual is particularly aimed at
professionals in the tourism and events
sectors looking to organise group trips
to the Principality of Monaco.
It is designed to make it
easier for you to find the
parking and access information
you need for your trip, and to provide
details of the applicable prices for groups.
Should you require further information, please
feel free to contact the managers for each site.
To help you get the very best from your visit to
the Principality of Monaco and its cultural and
tourist sites, we have also included a selection
of restaurants which cater for groups, as well as
highlights of the main events organised
in the Principality throughout the year.
Along with a selection of practical
information, you will also find a reply
coupon included in this manual. We
would appreciate it if you could send this back to
us along with details of any possible suggestions
that you may have. This coupon can also be used
to request additional brochures. Finally, during
the year you will receive a supplement listing
the new features or latest news from the various
tourist sites and attractions.

> The Principality
of Monaco:
an independent
sovereign state
Although the Principality of Monaco
is one of the smallest states in Europe,
it is nevertheless a fully fledged
member of the United Nations.
This independence, which has been
undisputedly recognised since the
16th century, was won and retained
thanks to the intelligence, the courage
and the tenacity of the Grimaldi
dynasty which has reigned over
the rock for more than 700 years!
Monaco’s admission to the Council
of Europe in 2004 further underlined
this independence. Prince Rainier III
died in April 2005. His son, Albert II
is the new Sovereign.
> A thriving economy
Despite the country’s small surface
area (195ha) and its lack of natural
resources, during the last 30 years
under the leadership of Prince
Rainier III the Principality of Monaco
has enjoyed an economic boom which
has been as consistent as it has been
remarkable, marked by a determined
investment and major construction
policy. The royal government has
encouraged the development of a
range of light, non-polluting industries
which blend in perfectly with the
urban fabric of the Principality.
The tertiary sector has also enjoyed
strong growth in the financial
field and for services, with a high
degree of diversification including
the new technologies and the
telecommunications industry.
Finally, the medical sector is well
represented here thanks to state-ofthe-art facilities including the Princess
Grace Hospital, the Hemodialysis
Centre, the Medical Imaging Centre,
the Cardio-Thoracic Centre not
forgetting the Institut Monégasque
de Médecine du Sport.
3
> Geographical location
Located at the far end of France’s
south-eastern coast, the Principality
of Monaco occupies a narrow coastal
strip running for 4.4 km alongside
the Mediterranean, at the foot of
the southern Alps.
Monaco’s current surface area stands
at 195 hectares (1.95 km2), of which
31 hectares have been gained at the
expense of the sea!
Its particularly mild and temperate
climate and its outstanding levels of
sunshine (more than 300 days per
year) make this the perfect location
for visits and tourism.
> General information
The last population census carried out
in 2000 showed that the Principality
had 32,020 residents, of which more
than 81% were foreigners (with
French people accounting for almost
32% of the total population).
There are approximately 7000
“nationals” (known as Monegasques).
The official language is French,
although Italian and English are also
widely spoken and understood.
The native Monegasque language is
an extremely colourful dialect used by
the “old time” nationals, but which
is now once again increasingly being
studied in the Principality’s schools.
The currency unit is the euro.
Monegasque coins with the same
value as the French ones are also
in circulation.
The state religion is Catholicism,
although freedom of worship is
guaranteed by the Constitution
(the Anglican, Baha’i, Jewish and
Protestant faiths are all represented
in the Principality).
The royal motto is “Deo Juvante”
(With the Help of God).
The country’s national holiday is
celebrated on November 19th.

> Access for tourist coaches
in the Principality
> Coach traffic and parking
procedures
The limited space available in
the Principality has led the public
authorities to take a number of
measures concerning access to,
departures from, and travel between
the public car parks.
The circulation and parking of tourist
coaches in the Principality is subject to
regulations drawn up to manage not
only local traffic but also individual
tourist vehicles with a view to avoiding
the main urban roadways and car
parks becoming clogged, while at the
same time seeking to protect the local
environment.
The computerised traffic and parking
administration system offers an
effective response to the problems
caused by traffic congestion in the
town and the parking areas.
Using this procedure, the “marshalling
centre” at the Jardin Exotique issues
the coach with a marshalling number
upon arrival, in addition to a secret
code enabling it to enter and leave
the car parks.
Coaches must always enter Monaco
via the RN7 (also known as the
“Moyenne Corniche”) and travel
directly to the “Centre de Régulation”
(marshalling centre) for coaches,
which is situated at the Jardin
Exotique (Exotic Gardens) on the
western edge of the Principality.
At the same time, the “marshalling
centre” also takes your payment for
parking, based on a price list shown
on the following pages.
You may only pass through the
Principality of Monaco (transit)
between 7 pm and 8 am.

The State Apartments
at the Prince’s Palace
As a poignant symbol of the Principality’s sovereignty, the Palais
des Princes de Monaco is a private
residence and a genuine “living
palace” thanks to the presence of
the Monaco’s ruling Prince who
continues to live there all year
round. The state apartments can
be visited throughout most of the
year. Faithfully preserving a centuries-old tradition, this palace was
built in its unique location on the
site of a fortress originally created
by the Genoese in 1215. A visit to
the palace offers you an unforgettable journey back through history, from the days of the Guelfes
and the Gibelins up to the Napoleonic era. The palace can still be
admired today in all of its original
splendour including:
- Its Italian style gallery running
along the southern facade, the
“Grands Appartements” (state
apartments), and the marvellous
frescoes painted by Genoese
artists in the 16th century featuring a number of mythological
scenes.
- The Louis XV room,
- The Mazarin room,
- The Throne Room featuring a
huge Renaissance fireplace where
major celebrations and historical
ceremonies have been held since
the 16th century,
- The Sainte Marie Tower,
- The Royal Courtyard.

The Oceanographic
Museum and Aquarium
“Protecting, loving
and informing
on the oceans”
Opposite the Mediterranean, on the
Grimaldi rock, the Oceanographic
Museum is an exceptional place not
to be missed. In this establishment
dedicated to the marine world; history
and topical science complement each
other wonderfully. Other three floors
and set in outstanding architecture
where the Arts hold an important
place, the visitor is invited to follow
in the footsteps of a learned Prince,
Founder of this unconventional
Museum and a pioneer in modern
oceanography, Albert Ist of Monaco
(1848-1922).
On the first floor, in the physical
Oceanography Room, the exhibition
“The Career of an Explorer”
retraces this journey. It serves as
the main focus for discovering and
understanding the subjects and origin
of the major current themes studied in
modern oceanography. In the Applied
Oceanography Room, between
exploration, arts and science, the visit
is punctuated by impressive collection
pieces, set off by the space in these
majestic rooms where the models and
large skeletons of marine mammals,
including that of a recently hung 20m
long fin whale, assume their full size.
On the ground floor, the temporary
exhibitions provide other points
of interest, like the live activities
presented by scientific presenters or
the films screened in the conference
rooms. In the summer season, an
original activity “The Aquarium
Nursery” is offered to the public.
In the basement, the Aquarium
is one of the highlights of the
visit. The ecosystems living in the
Mediterranean and tropical seas,
presented in a realistic setting with
an expertise recognised all over the
world, raises visitors’ awareness to
the sustainable management of the
Ocean. The Shark lagoon, a true
technical and biological feat, reveals
the extraordinary beauty and diversity
of coral reefs and the living creatures
that populate them in a giant 450m3
pool. To conclude this passionate
visit, the terrace and its restaurant
offer an uninterrupted view over the
Great Blue Sea and the Principality.
On March 29th 2010 the museum
will be celebrating its Centenary with
a bumper year of events. Everyone
is invited to celerate this exceptional
anniversary!

The Exotic Garden,
the Observatory Caves
and the Museum
of Prehistoric
Anthropology
An amazing site where you can discover some truly astonishing plant
varieties.
A genuine “Garden of Eden” for succulent plant varieties, this garden laid
out on the flanks of the rocky hillside
offers an uninterrupted view over the
Principality of Monaco and over the
French and Italian Rivieras.
Covering a total of 11,500 sq.m., this
municipal garden was opened in 1933
by Prince Louis II. It is the crowning glory of a collection of succulent
plants which was originally launched
in 1895, coupled with an ambitious
landscaping programme.
The walkways and arches make it possible for you to walk around at your
leisure as you discover these huge and
remarkable plants. The 2.400 hours of
sunshine each year guarantee flowers
with a wide range of colours and sizes
throughout the year. The cacti flowering from springtime until summer are
followed by the Euphorbias during
the autumn. During the winter, this
colourful display ends with the red
plumes of the various Aloes.
The Echinocactus grusonii (“Motherin-Law’s Cushion”), huge cereus
plants, the Madagascan Euphorbia
and the Mexican Agaves all share this
magical setting. The attractive carpet
of Senecio serpens, the forest of treelike Opuntia gradually lead you to the
entrance to the Observatory caves.
In the cave, a surprising sight awaits
visitors, as it is literally full of stalactites, stalagmites, hanging rock features and concretions.
Your visit ends with a not-to-bemissed trip into the Museum of
Prehistoric Anthropology, which
presents the key stages in mankind’s
development and a thrilling trip back
in time which never fails to delight
young and old alike.

New National
Museum of Monaco Villa Paloma
Villa Paloma opened on 18 September 2010. It is the New National
Museum of Monaco’s second exhibition area with Villa Sauber (Larvotto district).
Long a family home before
becoming an exhibition venue, it
is dedicated to the theme of Art
and Territory. It stands in one of
the Principality’s last ‘green lungs,’
ideal for exploring the notion of
landscape linked to Nature and its
representations. This site organises
temporary exhibitions, thereby
offering opportunities for developing various fine-quality artistic
projects associating modern and
contemporary art, architecture,
design...
Villa Paloma’s garden provides an
ideal setting, having preserved
its Italian style garden, a balcony
overlooking the sea and the city
respecting the existing vegetation. It connects with Parc Princesse Antoinette, the Museum
of Prehistoric Anthropology and
the Exotic Garden and its unique
panorama over the Principality.

The Museum of
Stamps and Coins
The museum of stamps and
coins presents the philatelic and
numismatic collections of H.S.H.
the Prince of Monaco, ranging
from the very first Monegasque
coins minted in 1641 and Monaco’s
first stamps produced in 1885,
underlining the importance
of these two vital symbols
of sovereignty, often seen as
“a country’s first ambassadors”.
Thanks to the historical displays
and to the themes presented
in chronological order, visitors
can discover the history of the
Principality, its past alliances
and its key aspects, and also
admire some outstanding postal
documents on show in the Rare
Stamps Room.
A 20-minute film describes the
history of the various postal
systems used in Monaco and
reveals the techniques behind the
printing and marketing of stamps.
A computerised information
terminal allows visitors to consult
the leading encyclopaedic
database of Monegasque stamps
and currency.
