FAITH, HOPE AND CLARITY
“All I want for Christmas is you.” Mariah Carey warbled that. I say something
a little different: all I want for Christmas is a grand selection of your finest
wares… please.
Many of the buying public feel the same way, so hopefully it will be a merry
festive season for your business. It should certainly be a happy one for us
because, no sooner should this magazine make the printers, than we’ll be
quaffing Santa’s sherry, whipping out the stockings and attempting to extort
expensive luxury gifts from passing wise men smoking Camel.
2005 proved an exceptional year for the flat-screen TV as LCD-TVs and
plasmas truly established themselves as the apple of the consumer’s eye. With
millions of CRT TVs still waiting to be replaced, the market is a long way off its
peak and should continue to generate appreciable revenue. We’ve checked out a
sizeable selection of options to help you pick and choose which ones you should
be stocking in 2006.
As more and more of these shift from the shelves, buyers are also starting
to see the benefits of specialist AV furniture and functional wall mounting
solutions... and these are certainly helping retailers boost their margins, again
offering hope for the year ahead.
Meanwhile, as the conventional Hi-Fi sector continues to stutter and
consumer demands move from straightforward multi-channel surround sound
systems to fully fledged, automated multi-room entertainment, more and more
retailers are embracing this change. The era of the custom installation is upon
us and this sense of flux is being felt on many shop floors as we evolve to
embrace new smart technologies and offer our buyers more integrated services.
With more affordable products continually being developed and more people
becoming aware of the advantages of an install, opportunities in this area have
never been better… and who better to capitalise upon them? So, in light of that,
Happy New Year – we hope it’s a successful one.

WHAT’S NEW
First Glimpse...
CREEK AUDIO SHOW WHY THEY ARE CURRENTLY
THE TALK OF THE TOWN, WITH SOME EXCEPTIONALLY
WELL CRAFTED NEW RELEASES…
Creek Audio have never been a company to rush out new releases that
aren’t quite ready in order to make a quick buck. In fact, they are
renowned for their consideration and overriding commitment to quality
and as a result, when they have a new range ready for release
expectation is high. This was certainly the case at the recent What Hi-Fi?
Sound and Vision Show when Creek purported to be releasing products
with the “most significant advances” they’ve come up with in 23 years.
MAKING OF A CLASSIC
The 5350SE Classic, which has been billed as a
direct successor of the much-lauded 5350SE,
boasts a fully restyled case, having had its
outmoded tape selector switch removed. Its pre
and power amps are connected via a semihidden push switch on the rear of the panel.
Thanks to this, users seeking some extra scope
in their sound can hook up an external
subwoofer.
All of the products were on show at the
What Hi-Fi? Show, with Mike himself on hand to
talk visitors through their capabilities. Suffice to
say a great impression was made, which was
aided and abetted by the presence of the Epos
speakers Creek have been developing in recent
years. With two magnificent home cinema
packages available and two What Hi-Fi? awards
in the Epos trophy cabinet for 2005, clearly the
team at Creek know a thing or two about high
quality, multi-channel sounds too. However, at
this moment in time, they are the talk of the
two-channel world…
MAKE YOUR OWN DESTINY
With an unusually compromise-free mandate, as well
as Mike Creek’s personal experience of some 35 years
in the game, The Destiny range does not disappoint.
The Destiny CD-player was founded on the basic ideas
deployed in the CD50mk2, a model widely regarded as
Creek’s finest performer to date. However, having
loosened the purse strings in the pursuit of even
higher quality audio reproduction, the Destiny takes
things to the next level.
This striking looking product has been built out of
seriously sturdy extruded, machined and anodised
aluminium. Inside the reassuringly strong casing are,
amongst other things, a custom made DVD-Rom drive, a
high resolution disc drive system, top notch firmware
(which can be updated in the future) and rigorously
regulated and filtered power supplies, which promote
optimum efficiency and keep interference to a minimum.
Also incorporated is an enhanced Master Clock, which
serves to keep jitter extraordinarily low. Everything has
been meticulously conceptualised and crafted and the
result is a product fitting of the perfectionism for which
the company’s leader is renowned.
The CD-player is joined on the launch pad by two
new integrated amplifiers. The Destiny amplifier is
aesthetically matched to the CD-player and benefits
from the same solid, custom-made casing. This new
amp allows users to choose between a sonically
perfect passive relay without gain and high precision
active performance; something those with techy
inclinations and their own preferences will no doubt
appreciate. To further enhance its performance the
Destiny’s pre-amp and power amplifier can be joined
and separated by a push button switch, recessed
behind the rear panel.
As you would expect from Creek, the Destiny amp
will feature a dedicated, balanced input with MM and
MC Phono circuits available, which exploit the
balanced nature of Phono cartridge wiring to
significantly improve interference suppression and
provide studio levels of accuracy to the venerable vinyl
disc source.
The amp also offers low current stand-by
operation and, by mid 2006, will be able to be tied into
an automation system, thanks to Creek’s plans to
develop a bus system offering RS232-style control. The
Destiny amp is the perfect companion to the CD-player
and the two products have been described by Mr Creek
as his “proudest creations so far” – and that’s
saying something.

The Manchester show's main
man, Stuart Hopwood
THE RENAISSANCE MEN
Manchester’s most popular Hi-Fi and
vision show returned to the Renaissance
Hotel last month and succeeded in pulling
in the punters once again. 2005’s event
has already been acclaimed an overwhelming success by its organisers,
exhibitors and visitors. “Every year we’re impressed by the steady flow of
high-quality visitors this show attracts, but this year has been considerably
more impressive, with a larger number of discerning couples and highcalibre customers,” commented Denon’s Peter Woodard.
With more than 60 brands on display, there was a fully-fledged feast
for the electronics buff to tuck in to. One of the biggest draws proved to be
the Yamaha stand which featured a custom built listening area, providing a
thoroughly effective platform for the award-winning digital sound projector,
the YSP800, to show off its attributes. Other big draws included the
revitalised selection of Audiolab amplifiers and CD separates, back from
the dead due to popular demand. Denon’s new iPod harnessing Smart Life
Systems certainly stimulated a lot of interest, whilst Onkyo’s well priced
DS-A1 iPod docking station reported a healthy reception.
Speaker specialists Eclipse certainly don’t cater for the casual audio
fan so the fact they had a great show says a lot about the quality of visitors
that made the rounds. “We are 120% satisfied with this event,” MD Hiroshi
Watanabe remarked. “The show has produced greater crowds than any
other we have attended.” The firm have already confirmed they’ll be
returning in 2006, having been impressed with the acoustics of the rooms
as well. With some exceptional new products lined up for the launch pad
expect to hear a lot more from them in the coming months.
Making the most of MP3-players is something of a theme these days
and there are no better solutions than TEAC’s new addition to the
Reference 200 Series. Acoustic Energy certainly caused a stir with some
great new products on show, including their wonderfully innovative Wi-Fi
internet radio, whilst Sharp’s new HD-ready, 65-inch LCD-TV was the
biggest pull in visual entertainment. However, Sony, Pioneer, Fujitsu and
Panasonic all gave their fellow home entertainment giant a run for their
money with some great, HDTV-based displays. With PURE and Tivoli also
commanding significant displays, a strong showing of DAB products was
assured, whilst speaker manufacturers Neat Acoustics and Art both had brand
new products making their debut.
There was a lot on show to pull in the punters and as a result more made
the trip than the organisers had dared to predict. With many shows currently
in decline this is great news for directors Stuart Hopwood and Gay Brown of
Practical Hi-Fi. As Gay commented: “Having such a wide variety of leading
exhibitors support this show provides a fantastic opportunity for all visitors,
whatever their level of enthusiasm for appreciation of sound, vision, style and
fashion.” She continued: “Being able to see, hear, feel and buy such a vast
array of products from recognised world brand names and leaders of new
technologies, all under one roof in the centre of Manchester, has become an
essential marketing tool for both Practical Hi-Fi and the industry as a whole.”

Audica are known

edge speaker
systems
6
Audica, whose stunning speaker products were first unveiled to
the UK industry at the CEDIA Expo 2004, has appointed Armour
Home Electronics as its new UK distributor. The renowned
Armour team are already in charge and both sides seem
highly excited by their new relationship.
Commenting on the news, Alex Munro,
Audica’s Managing Director said: “We are
extremely pleased to have secured the
services of Armour as our distributor. They
are clearly the leading distribution company
in our market sector and I am confident the
strength of their sales and marketing
organisation will propel Audica’s initial
successes to another level.”
Glenn McClelland, Armour Home Electronics’
Managing Director added: “I don’t think I’m giving
away any trade secrets when I say the key to being a
successful distributor is to have great products to
sell. Audica speakers fit the bill perfectly. They deliver
exceptional performance from beautiful, leading edge
designs and at a price that represents
outstanding value. I believe our dealers will
enjoy tremendous success with the Audica

SHOPPED THEN THEY DROPPED
A DOUBLE SCOOP
While many retailers in the AV sector have been
finding times rather tough of late, it is important to
note that it isn’t just our industry that is struggling. It
is, it would seem, the product of a wider economic
trend afflicting the High Street generally. According to
a report in The Guardian, new shopper data has
revealed October as “the quietest month for stores
for more than six years.”
The figures behind this declaration came from
The Retail Traffic Index, who measure the volume of
shoppers at retail destinations. With these figures
falling 3% from the same period last year, clearly
conditions are giving us a harder sell. According to
those behind the report, the research group SPSL,
the figures are the worst they’ve seen since they
began to collect data back in 1999.
It has been London and the southeast where the
most substantial decline has been felt, with numbers
plummeting by 7% in October on 2004, following
reports of a 6.6% decline in September. Clothing
retailer Matalan is the latest big name to report a
major downturn. However, with the Christmas season
very nearly in the offing, many are confident things
will soon pick up.
Last month, the great, the good and the clearly addled of the UK AV
industry gathered at the Park Lane Hilton for the annual What Hi-Fi?
Sound & Vision awards shindig. Amongst the night’s winners were Onkyo's
DAB/CD Micro and iPod dock, both of which bagged major honours at the
event. The £220 Onkyo CR-505DAB system was crowned Best Hi-Fi Micro
System £200-£500. 'This neat unit,” the magazine explained, “delivers
splendidly balanced, insightful sound from both CD and DAB - simply add a
pair of efficient budget speakers to complete your sparkling system.”
"The sub £500 Hi-Fi micro system sector is one of the most hotly
contested in the whole industry," says David Vukovich, Onkyo UK Sales
Manager. "For the CR-505DAB to be judged the best in class by the No1
one-selling Hi-Fi/AV magazine is a major triumph… it really puts Onkyo
on the map and demonstrates what a serious contender the brand is
fast becoming in UK."
Onkyo's other award-winner was the £59.99 Onkyo DS-A1
iPod dock, named as the Best iPod Connector Dock. According
to the What’s Hi-Fi? writers, it's “a simple but effective way to
enjoy your iPod's music and photo collection via your Hi-Fi
or home cinema system.”
"We're really pleased that such a globally prestigious
magazine has recognised Onkyo's constant drive to
innovate,” UK boss Kengo Iwasaki commented. “We'll have
some more surprises for them in 2006."

TOO COOL
For the third year running Denon has been
voted a Cool BrandLeader. According to the
Superbrands Cool Council, "Denon dazzles
with the excellence of its product, not its
advertising spend." Chosen from the tens
of thousands of brands on the UK market, short listed down to 700 and with just 50
brand finalists, Denon is in the company of market leaders such as MTV, Diesel Jeans,
Audi, Gaggia, Agent Provocateur, Moet et Chandon and Oakley. Denon is unusual
amongst the winners in that their acclaim is founded upon the word-of-mouth from
satisfied users and sheer product quality, not to the huge ad budgets enjoyed by most of
the other winners.
Stephen Cheliotis, Chairman of the CoolBrands council, commented: "Winning
awards is almost intrinsic to the Denon brand with universal recognition for quality
amongst both professionals and enthusiasts. To add to these achievements we are
proud to present Denon with the highly deserved accolade of CoolBrand 2005."
Mike O'Mahony, MD of Denon UK, was clearly delighted with this appraisal. "As the
Denon brand grows way beyond its specialist roots we continually strive to maintain the
core value of the brand; quality. Denon is never the cheapest, it is often the best. We are
delighted with the Cool Award as it recognises that this effort underpins Denon's
reputation. In an increasingly downmarket world, Denon’s success again proves that
quality still counts."
The 'Cool' accolade will receive extensive publicity and Denon will be featured in a
DPS in the glossy style book covering the Awards, cover mounted on Dazed & Confused
magazine in November.

AND THE
WINNERS ARE…
Last month the AV industry’s top
dogs descended upon Park Lane’s
Hilton Hotel for the annual What
Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision Awards.
The plush surroundings proved an
appropriate venue for the
magazine to choose as it is going
from strength to strength, both in
the UK and in the global arena it is
increasingly permeating. All of our
major manufacturers made the
trip, with the team from What’s
New striding confidently between
them, stealing their champagne
Monitor Audio rack up the awards...
and picking their brains.
Following a grand reception and a hearty meal, it was over to the
business end of the event, with comic Phil Jupitus and Managing Editor
Clare Newsome in charge of presenting the awards. The biggest
winners on the night were Monitor Audio and Yamaha, each of whom
claimed two Product of the Year awards.
Monitor’s i-deck has certainly proved a hit around our offices and it
was no surprise to see this particular iPod add-on run out victorious.
After all, for a mere £250 it offers iPod owners an incredibly simplistic
route to drawing full, rich and detailed sounds from their diminutive
MP3-player. It was Yamaha’s Digital Sound Projectors which claimed
the top technology award for innovation and this was equally well
deserved. These sleek, single-bodied speakers have proved a
revelation, offering users one of the most original, aesthetically viable
and affordable ways
of securing a surrounding soundtrack about.
Atacama were thrilled to claim the top prize in the Accessories
division for the Equinox Series – a range of furniture that also ruled the
roost in 2004. QED rode out the inevitable comical asides, dominating
the cable category, with the Silver Anniversary XT speaker cable
winning the highest accolade. BenQ have made some serious waves in
the home cinema arena since they entered the fray and in the PE7700
they have clearly created a true winner. This beat off many longer
standing competitors to claim the top place on the rostrum and
illustrated how seriously BenQ should be treated in this growing
market.
It was less of a surprise to see Denon triumph with a DVD-player
or KEF’s iQ5 claim the plaudits, whilst PURE’s Evoke-2XT was always
going to be a natural selection in the DAB section. With the crowd
eager to be entertained, it proved an enjoyable night for everyone
concerned and the bars were buzzing after the presentation, with backs
being patted and ears being bent. There is no more prestigious award
show for our industry and the thumbs up the winning products have
received from arguably the best read magazine of its kind should
certainly help you shift their stock in store.

7th YEAR
IN THE HOT SEAT
Intempo Digital, a leading home grown manufacturer
of DAB Digital Radio, has appointed Graham Brown as
its new chairman. Graham, the former chief executive
of SWEB Electrical Chain, joins the manufacturer with
a view to steering the company through a forthcoming
and vital next stage of development. Graham’s retail
background includes spells with MFI, Texas Homecare
and Ritz Video Chain, while at SWEB Electrical he
proved particularly successful, returning the business
to sustained profitability. Latterly his involvement in the
private equity industry has earned him an outstanding
reputation for delivering successful investments. As a Intempo have turned
to Graham Brown to
result, Intempo hope to benefit from this experience
guide them
and the strategic business advice Graham offers.
Intempo Digital’s current range includes multi-award-winning kitchen radios, that
have received Which? magazine’s ‘Best Buy’ in four consecutive DAB group tests. The
company also recently created an exclusive limited edition radio in a high-profile
collaboration with fashion designer, Matthew Williamson. The venture was a success
with the radio selling out and requiring waiting lists in 14 John Lewis stores where it
was sold exclusively.
“Almost two-million DAB digital radios have been sold in the UK now and listening
figures are booming as more and more people tune into this technology,” said
Bernadette Spofforth, Founder of Intempo Digital. “Intempo has always been at the
forefront of this digital radio era,” she continued, “putting our footprint on the industry
by achieving a 10% brand share of the UK radio market in our first year of trading
alone. Graham’s appointment will help us to further develop and grow our brand in this
market.”
Intempo Digital is currently extending its range of DAB digital radio products thanks
to the launch of its BoomBox for adults and CD/Radio alarm clock. With Dab continually
growing, Intempo’s affordable range, conscientious development and award-winning
customer service should ensure the firm of a successful Christmas period.

HISTORY LESSONS
SPREADING THEIR WEB
Next year Alexandra Palace will be celebrating the 70th
anniversary of the first ever TV broadcast, which came direct from
the historic venue. In 1936 Elizabeth Cowell uttered the immortal
words: "This is direct television from Alexandra Palace". Since
then television has become one of modern society's most
significant technological breakthroughs and the BBC's occupation
of the Palace in the 1930's for early experiments and actual
production was key to its development. Alexandra Palace is the
birthplace of television and its anniversary will be celebrated there
throughout 2006. Watch this space for further details about how
you can explore the history of one of the very inventions our
business is founded upon.

AVF, one of our finest wall and floor
mounts specialists, has launched a
website aimed at electrical retailers. The
site, www.avf-nexus.co.uk, is dedicated to
the company’s new collection of flat-panel
screen mounts and provides retailers with
all the information they need on the Nexus
range. Simple and easy to navigate, it
offers resellers the most convenient
introduction to the range around. From the
animated landing page the user can
choose to view one or all of the four
ranges – Designer, Studio, Cinema and
Arc - within the Nexus Collection. Retailers
can download detailed datasheets, a variety
of images and installation guides on each
product within the series. Interested
merchants can also request pricing
information online and details of how to
become a dealer.
Andrew Dimond, managing director of
AVF, said: “As we know, there is often more
money to be made from accessories than
the TV itself, so there’s a great opportunity
for retailers to cross sell. As a further
incentive, we’ve also developed a pricing
model that ensures independents can make
significant margins whilst remaining
competitive with the multiples.”
The website is the latest stage of AVF’s
high-profile marketing campaign to launch
the Nexus brand. In September
independents were targeted with a teaser
campaign in trade press and through direct
mail featuring mysterious x -shaped
objects.

Roger Jennings has
been appointed
Managing Director of
Sevenoaks Sound and
Vision. Roger was
previously Chief
Executive of the Austin
Reed Group Plc, where he had also held the position of Retail
Managing Director. Here he was responsible for transforming it
from a traditional retailer into a modern, successful branded
retail and licensing group.
Commenting on his appointment Roger said: "I am
delighted to be joining such a first class business and am
impressed with what they have achieved in such a competitive
market. I'm looking forward to the opportunity of bringing my
retail and brand management experience to the business. Our
aim is to significantly grow the business and to secure the
position of Sevenoaks as the leading retailer of high quality
Home Entertainment in the UK."

Andrew added: “So far the campaign
has raised retailers’ curiosity and interest
in the Nexus range. The level of response
and positive feedback has far outweighed
our expectations and a more detailed
mailing with specific dealer information is
now taking place for those that requested it.
We hope that the site will stimulate even
more retailers to become AVF dealers.”
AVF Nexus has slimline flush to wall
mounts, tilting mounts and there is a corner
mount option on a swivel arm that keeps a
TV in a more conventional position.
Independent research conducted by Mori
showed that twice as many people preferred
Nexus to other mounts available. The Nexus
collection is instantly recognisable with its
high-quality silver finish and unique “X”
symbol and its products should stand out
thanks to their distinctive packaging design
and the bright colours.

EYE ON THE INDUSTRY
FIVE ALIVE
The Consumer Electronic Association (CEA) has released the 2006
edition of Five Technologies to Watch, an annual publication that
examines five prominent technology trends set to influence the
consumer electronics (CE) industry in the coming year. This latest
edition examines recordable high-definition content, domestic robotics,
the digital home studio, interactive gaming and innovative displays.
The overall message is a positive one, with the CEA forecasting
endless possibilities for the consumer electronics industry. "These five
technologies truly illustrate the progress of technology in the digital
age. They stood out in our extensive research process as the most
likely to make the biggest splash in the consumer market in the year
ahead," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CEA. "Every year the
industry continues to make strides toward improvement, and it is clear
that the consumer electronics industry has a bright future."
Geared toward industry professionals, the publication provides an
analysis of each of the five trends and outlines, related issues and
market forecasts for the upcoming year. Other topics covered for each
trend include consumer perspectives, partnerships, key players and
public policy issues.
The ability to receive and record HD content at home is quickly
becoming a reality of the digital age. With an upsurge in HDTV sets and
HD programming well underway, recordable high-definition devices,
including Blu-ray Disc, HD DVD and HD DVR, will also make a big impact
in the market, according to Five Technologies to Watch. Already, digital
video recorders (DVRs) can be found in nearly 10% of American homes
and the number is expected to rise in 2006 with more cable and
satellite providers offering the HDVR service. Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD
offer the ability to record and transport HD content, but a potential
format war between the two standards could be a roadblock to the
adoptability of HD recording. Copy protection and video-on-demand
also pose significant threats to recordable HD devices; however
consumer research points to a bright future for HD recording.
The report also pays homage to companies working to advance
robotics technology and notes the explosion of digital cameras,
camcorders, audio players etc leading to the development of DIY home
studios. The fourth area to attract the attention of the writers was the
next generation video consoles due for release in the next six months
or so. These, we learned, may well act as a cornerstone of the digital
home by incorporating high-definition movie playback, online game
play, digital camera and camcorder connectivity, and the ability to
access computer files stored on a PC.
Finally, in good news for all AV retailers, the report estimates that
the market for innovative television displays will continue to grow
exponentially. With home design and space a key focus, flat-panel
displays such as plasmas, LCD-TVs and DLP-TVs are becoming
increasingly popular. The combination of a big screen and
unprecedented quality in a slender package will
make sales higher than ever. With newer,
thinner display technologies, such as SED
and OLED, also set to make their
presence felt, this is one area that will
hold the consumers attention.
Although Five Technologies
to Watch focuses primary on
the market the across the
pond, us Europeans can
learn a lot from it and
having had a good look
through its key points
we reckon there is
plenty to be
positive about in
the year ahead.

A CLEAR STRATEGY
Following the recent announcement of a new distributor for the T+A and Waterfall
brands in the UK, Ty Jackson of Transparent Distribution Ltd has confirmed his
agreement to become the sole distributor for the new and exciting Vivadi brand in
the UK.
"Having already achieved good progress with my existing Hi Fi and
Loudspeaker brands, T+A and Waterfall, I have been actively searching out a vision
product to complete the proposition from Transparent Distribution Ltd. The key
criteria was for the product to be targeting at a similar level of the market to our
existing range so that a symmetry between all brands could be achieved. At a time
when flat-panel sales are becoming ever more competitive and margins being
pushed to the limit, it was also extremely important to find a brand that could be
easily distinguished from the competition and also offer a genuine return for the
dealers’ investment.
Having been closely following the progress of the Vivadi brand over the past
couple of years and having read that the product was now ready to roll, I felt it was
time to have a chat with Paul Roberts, Vivadi's CEO. Suffice to say that we have very
similar views and opinions about our industry and the direction for our respective
businesses. The product itself, the Vivadi Saturn, offers a unique proposition to the
dealer and customer alike. It is a beautifully crafted, integrated system which
incorporates a twin HDMI high-definition 46-inch plasma with Media Center PC
incorporating twin digital tuners with 14 day EPG, a DVD-recorder, 400Gb hard drive
recorder and music server, internet, e-mail and full PC functionality, Dolby and DTS
surround decoders, 400W of amplification and an optional matching speaker
system. The product also incorporates a patented modular design that allows for
the future upgrading of any key components. Both the Audio and Visual quality are
of the very highest order and prices start at £6,999. The product is guaranteed to
create an impact and in my opinion, for the customer requiring an integrated 'total'
solution, there is no better or more stylish alternative".

RACK IN THE GAME
Vivanco UK are one of our leading suppliers of
accessories, boasting 10 subsidiaries and distributors
in more than 47 countries. While we might know them
best for their cables and headphones they have a lot to
offer the AV dealer, particularly in light of a recent deal
the team have signed with famed Japanese furniture
brand Hamilex. The range is already well known in our
market and boasts an array of designs in a number of
popular finishes. With prices ranging between £199.99
and £399.99 it is thoroughly affordable and will carry
anything from a 15-inch LCD-TV to a 42-inch plasma.
Thanks to a competitive price structure, with discounts
available for display items and certain quantities, there
will be plenty of incentive for dealers to sign up to a
supply of this kit. A direct consumer delivery service is
also available to ensure stock rooms need not be
overrun, thus - having already proven a success in

Leading retail software specialist Cromwell is
running special financial training courses to help
retailers get essential management information
more quickly in order to keep their businesses on
track during these difficult times. And numerous
retailers from our industry have already attended
the four one-day courses held at Cromwell's
headquarters in Ely.
The course aims to help retailers make betterinformed commercial decisions based on real
trends and data. It provides information on how to
keep track of margins, maximise cash flow and
react to trends more quickly. But how has it been
going down? Well, judging by comments made by
retailers who have attended the course, it could not
have come at a better time.
Says Peter Bowden of Radbolts in Brighton. "In
the very difficult trading conditions that we are all
facing at the moment it is vital that we have a full
understanding of the figures in our business,
particularly where our margins are coming from.
The course showed how easy it is, in just a few key
brushstrokes, to get information we need to make
informed business decisions. I can now drill down
by product and branch to get much more
comprehensive data."
Retra president Stephen Craggs of G Craggs
agrees. "The course represented a very valuable
opportunity to take time and analyse what I should
be doing. It will greatly help with better financial
planning, forecasting and sales analysis."
Richard Booth of Booth for Better Service in
Inverurie, Aberdeenshire added: "It is really
informative and showed me that nominal
integration is a must. Also, it was a great
opportunity to share ideas with other retailers on
how we run our businesses."

OUT AND ABOUT
Out And About
WE VENTURE AROUND THE LATEST AV SHINDIGS WITH A SONG IN OUR HEART AND A HALFFULL GLASS IN OUR HAND…
What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision’s annual award show is the biggest of its
kind on the AV calendar and draws all of the industry’s most significant
manufacturers together for one night of commendation, entertainment,
food, glorious food and wine. It is always eagerly anticipated by those
lucky enough to wangle a seat and fortunately enough, thanks to our
importance (and a sizable bung) we managed to secure a couple.
Comedian Phil Jupitus was this year’s master of ceremonies and quickly
had the well oiled crowd in stitches, ably assisted by the magazine’s
editor Claire Newsome. Naturally there was serious business to
undertake too, with every table graced by hardworking AV folk desperate
to get their hands on the prestigious What Hi-Fi? gongs sitting
temptingly by the stage. At ours these included the chaps from Velodyne
whose CHT-12R was not only named Best Subwoofer £300-£500, but also
claimed the overall award, leading to a trip up to the stage and some
raucous applause for the team sitting to my right.
Other big winners on the night included Monitor Audio, who were well
represented at the event. The team’s RS6 AV was named the best speaker
package, while the ultra convenient yet powerful iPod-docking i-deck took
the top prize in the MP3 Players and Accessories category. Last year, we
found ourselves on a table dominated by representatives from Yamaha and
we must have jinxed the poor team as despite several nominations they
failed to claim any overall title. However, free from our presence in 2005 the
team flourished, running out victorious in the Surround Amplifiers/Receivers
section thanks to the abilities of the DSP-AX757SE. The firm’s Digital Sound
Projectors have won some serious acclaim since their introduction and a lot
of press on these pages too. At the swanky, black tie event, they added the
overall award for technology to their trophy cabinet – one of the most
significant titles on offer – reaffirming the degree of innovation and
inventiveness that continues to pervade the Yamaha ranks.
What Hi-Fi? had clearly pulled out all the stops to make this year’s
event more spectacular than ever, with a huge stage, impressive audiovisual effects and the cutting tongue of Phil Jupitus all helping to make the
evening something to remember. As the awards were reeled out and the
bottles relieved of their wine, the collars loosened and the chins started to
wag. As I made the most dignified exit I could muster in the early hours,
the bar was still buzzing, with our very own ad director Theresa, and her
willing accomplice CEDIA’s Wendy Griffiths, ably assisting the many flaking
manufacturers in their attempts to prop up the bar. They assure me their
blackmail campaign is already underway…
HEART FOR ART’S SAKE
Back in the working world, the alluring yet not remotely heart chamber-esque
surroundings of The Atrium at Harrods proved a fitting venue for the latest
instalment of Loewe’s master plan for market domination. With a healthy
selection of the press present, it was time to unveil what the company are
promoting as “the world's first customisable LCD-TV,” the Loewe Individual.
With over 400 possible combinations it certainly stands out from the crowd,
offering virtually unlimited design possibilities and a personal touch like no
other can offer. Donning my most carefully crafted, meticulously straightened,
asymmetrical mullet, I joined many top fashionistas in giving my endorsement,
as the high-resolution pictures, HDTV compatibility and top notch performance
made a serious impression. There certainly isn’t the space here to even begin
to list the colour combinations or material options available, so I suggest you
take the time to have a closer look at the Individual. The words “something for
everyone” have never rung truer.

CRYSTAL CLEAR
Eclipse’s famous egg-shaped speakers, on the other hand, are made for a
very specific audience, one that demands their music sounds as true to the
original recording as it can get, even at the risk of exposing flaws in the
recording process or playing.
The firm chose the historic surroundings of London’s Abbey Road for
the launch of their latest products. Up and running in the fully preserved
studio where the Beatles recorded their 1969 masterpiece, there was no
doubting the realism of the relay emitted from the new TD510s. Impressive
both as a multi-channel operation and in a two-channel set-up, we were
invited to hear a selection of material including SACD music and DVD
soundtracks. With the speakers carefully positioned, they created an
immersing soundscape that appeared to truly surround rather than
emanate from the specific speaker placements. Transparency was the
order of the day with every pluck of the bass and note on the piano easily
discernible in the mix. When deployed without a dedicated sub in a twochannel context the bass remained impressively evident without a hint of
distortion. With the performance improved and the price falling to £1,200
for a pair, the TD510s are undoubtedly an improvement on their
predecessors the TD512s. They might be slightly smaller, but they gain
rather than lose in their performance.
Also on show was the company’s 307PA
System, hooked up to a docked iPod.

NAD ELECTRONICS
Masters Of Art
When a company as respected as NAD starts
bandying about the superlatives you know it must
have something special up its sleeves. HAMISH
McNAIR-WILSON investigates…
NAD’s Masters Series is as bold a statement of intent as you are likely to see
in the AV industry this year. Billed as a batch of components offering the very
best performance in the company’s 33-year history, compromise-free
construction is the order of the day. NAD’s products have invariably fared well
in the consumer press, with its previous flagship series the Classic accruing
five-star reviews effortlessly. Surpassing this is no mean feat, but with the
Masters Series NAD may just have done it. Some of the firm’s latest wares are
all set for launching this month and everything from their smoothly styled
aesthetics to the clean and detailed sound quality are sure to make the finest
of impressions. Read on to discover exactly what all the fuss is about…
M15 SURROUND SOUND PREAMPLIFIER
The M15 Surround Sound Preamplifier is a striking
looking component forged from aluminium
extrusions, zinc castings and heavy gauge steel,
giving it a confidence-inspiring solidity and the
elegance to attract the modern consumer. NAD’s
renowned attention to detail is evident throughout
in the innovative circuit design, latest high speed
DSPs and proprietary operating and decoding
software. Regardless of the signal or format, quality
and integrity comes guaranteed and the M15 even
offers post-processing for the stunning THX Ultra 2.
This up-to-the-minute model features two
HDMI inputs and an HDMI output on its rear panel,
keeping it up to speed with the high-definition era
that is so nearly upon us, ready to serve up detailed,
rich and transparent surround sounds to match the
images HDTV will supply. Whether your client is
looking to build a 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 system, favours
Dolby or DTS, it matters not. Moreover, with an RS232 port also present, the M15 is advanced enough
to work alongside the most intelligent control
systems of today and the future, while it will cater
for a second zone’s needs from the box, affording
the user independent source and volume control in
a remote location.
14
M25 SEVEN CHANNEL POWER AMPLIFIER
The Masters Series will derive its kick from the M25, a hefty seven-channel
power amplifier. Power, of course, doesn’t just mean volume – it means a
quality relay when you pump up the sound. Fortunately, with this amplifier
offering a minimum of 160W per channel, each of which is driven
simultaneously from 20Hz-20kHz, the M25 delivers exactly that. Indeed,
with a rated distortion level of 0.03%, this will fill the most sizable home
cinema with the cleanest of sounds. THX, it would seem, agree, and have
awarded the M25 their toughest certification level: Ultra 2.
Keeping extraneous sounds to a minimum has been a consistent
theme in the design of the M25 and even the variable speed fans pitch in,
cutting out in particularly quiet passages of play to eliminate any unwanted
mechanical noise. However, both these and the custom heat sinks prove up
to their task, ensuring that the M25 can work at full stretch for hours on
end without overheating.
The balanced junction FET input stage
also works to keep noise and distortion to a
minimum, whilst a unique electronic
isolation circuit has been deployed to
prevent the ground loop noise, which has
been known to afflict complex multichannel systems. In essence, the M25 has
the strength to deliver in any scenario and
the circuitry to ensure it does this well.

M3 DUAL MONO
INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER
The M3 Dual Mono Integrated
Amplifier is a product the NAD team are
particularly proud of… and rightfully so.
Described by its manufacturers as an ‘ideal musical
companion,’ it features a classical analogue circuit design
taken to a new level courtesy of the original digital controls. The product is
the handiwork of the highly regarded and universally respected Director of
Advanced Development, Bjorn Erik Edvardsen. Edvardsen has come up with an
architecture that uses precise 1% resistors controlled, unusually, by digital
switchers. This, combined with the carefully devised layout – which keeps signal
paths short – makes for one incredibly precise integrated amplifier.
M55 UNIVERSAL DISC PLAYER
The M55 is an attractive and high-performance universal disc player, capable of
assuming the roles of several individual components. As well as traditional CDs
and DVDs, this sturdy yet elegant player will handle the high-definition audio
formats, SACD and DVD-Audio, and can even decode MP3 and WMA disks.
The M55 has been tailored to suit the needs of the HDTV generation,
boasting a Faroudja DCDi to upconvert standard DVD signals to a higher
definition. An HDMI HD output is also included, which will allow high-definition
audio and video signals to be transferred around the system in digital signals,
helping to alleviate distortion. A number of high speed DACs have of course
been included. One of these is vital in drawing the finest visual performance
The amplifier supplies 180W of power effortlessly in each of its two
channels and, thanks to NAD’s PowerDrive technology, this can sound like a
whole lot more. Such is the precision, richness and accuracy of the sounds that
the M3 conveys that it should be a hit with the large number of two-channel fans
that remain. Through its ingenious use of digital controls, this particular
integrated solution highlights that there is still plenty of life and room for
innovation in the stereo sector, and it should impress all who encounter it.
from a DVD and plenty make the cut
ensuring the user is privy to exceptional
quality performance. There are even
independent DACs to allow a simultaneous
feed to zone two. The M55 has all the
functionality and features that we’ve come
to demand from our DVD players and its
host of picture adjustment technologies will
satisfy the viewer who likes to tweak images
to their own tastes.
Those seeking a greater depth to their sounds
will appreciate the inclusion of onboard decoding and
bass management for both DVD-Audio and SACD. Meanwhile,
the progressive performance can be matched by a progressive system of
control, thanks to the inclusion of an IR input, 12V trigger input and Rs-232
port, which allow it to interact with a fully fledged automation system.

is the isolation within its three monitors, that they can even be
used on a partition wall or attached to furniture… and still
provide open, transparent, detailed sounds. Users can pick
and mix from the selection to suit their needs with the
Monitor, Compact, Centre and dedicated sub capable of
working in a host of combinations. Straightforward to set up
and incredibly sleek and discreet in looks, the Vita Symphony
is an ideal solution for those who take both their sound and
interiors seriously.

MUSIC OF SPHERES
Oregon Scientific’s WRS368 Music Sphere is a remarkable piece of
kit that is every bit as futuristic as it looks. Behind its curvaceous
contours is some up-to-the-minute technology which allows it to
play back crystal clear audio from up to three sources. By employing
a 2.4GHz digital audio frequency, those awkward and unattractive
wires can become a thing of a past, whilst source functions can be
accessed remotely too. As a result users will be able to take their
sounds around the home with them as they go and be privy to some
very reasonable 2.1 playback into this particularly convenient
bargain. Here at What’s New we don’t believe in gadgets for
gadgets’ sake, but this one really does break the mould and should
prove popular across the market.

Sound and Vision Show to devastating effect, unleashing a host of

around 100-CDs or 80-DVDs, it has an elegant and timeless appeal
that should actually add to any interior.
A number of glass shelved, acoustically decoupled racks were
on display, catering for the needs of the flat-screen generation.

NHT is driven by the desire to recreate the very sounds the artist
intended to be heard in the home and the Classic is the latest
manifestation of this goal. The range includes bookshelf speakers
with particularly well crafted acoustic suspension designs, which
serve up sounds of impressively low distortion, deep bass response
and increased detail. These are joined by a substantial, three-way
centre speaker which helps to ensure every seat in the house,
rather than a solitary sweet spot, benefits from a system’s abilities.
While the Classic series is attractive to the eye, its form is
founded in functionality with each speaker’s construction designed
to create a consistent, predictable acoustical environment, ensure
the great dispersion of high frequency sounds and guarantee
impacting bass response… in almost any room, we’re told. The
application of seven coats of hand-finished polyurethane applied in
a ‘solid particle’ method highlights how meticulously this range
has been built and, as a result, it quite simply exudes quality.

AN AEGO BOOST
iPod accessories are certainly proving big business right now and Acoustic

this diminutive system produces sounds remarkably plosive for its size. Hitting
the market at a thoroughly reasonable £99, it has been styled to suit the
almost ubiquitous iPod, but will also allow users to bring a lively level of
sound to MP3-players, consoles, PCs, mobile phones, Discmans et al. A truly

GO FOR THE GOLD
Monitor Audio have added a new flagship range to their high regarded
catalogue, pushing back the boundaries once again. Named the Gold

standards of design, innovation, performance, technical excellence,
build quality and value in its class. The new six model line-up

speakers, the GS20 and GS60; a dual-mode surround speaker, the GSFX; a dedicated centre-channel speaker, the GS-LCR; and a 1000W

Although the values behind the original Gold Reference series
have been preserved, significant improvements have been made in the
construction and quality of materials deployed. More rigid,
comprehensively braced cabinets and new drivers for the chassis bass
and bass-mid drivers are amongst the enhancements, which
collectively ensure this sumptuous selection keeps a step or two

HOORAY HENRIK
Jamo’s Reference R 909 has been designed to redress the flaws its
developers believe to be inherent in box loudspeaker designs. These,
they expound, almost inevitably produce cabinet-induced resonances
as a compromise when generating deep bass. Moreover, they are also
limited in where they can be placed in order to best perform. Jamo,
however, in a new, ingenious floorstanding dipolar design, claim to
have staved off these problems.
The R909, which is the handiwork of the firm’s chief acoustic
engineer, Henrik Mortensen, dispenses with a conventional cabinet and
embraces a radical new approach. Coming fitted with two 380mm
woofers, a 150mm midrange and a customised 25mm Scanspeak
Revelator tweeter, the three-way R 909 employs a 43mm thick baffle with
a complex, cleverly constructed seven-layer lacquered multi-ply
construction.
Such innovation and fresh ideas are evident throughout the design,
but what of the results? Well, if exceptionally firm bass, with immense
transient speed and precision and fluidity across the frequency range are
your buyer’s cup of tea, this could be the one for them. With coloration
and reverberation only notable for their absence, the R 909 highlights
beyond doubt there is still scope for original thought in speaker
manufacturing. And, at £7,500 a pair, it’s either cheap at the price or
reassuringly expensive depending upon how you look at it.

SEVEN ON EARTH
When it comes to receivers Yamaha truly stand out as both

digital home theatre option offers a hearty 130W of High
quality UK tuned sound for every one of its channels and

composite, S-video or component video signal. It's also the
first in it's class to offer full video up-scalling for high

If you feel the RX-V2600 is just a little too much, fear
not. Meet the RX-V1600, a digital receiver that shares many

AWASH WITH SOUND
Canton’s Vento Reference 1 DC sounds every bit as spectacular as it looks
and is already being met with rave reviews across the industry, excelling in
every test it has been put to. In an unusual loosening of the purse strings, its
developers were afforded a carte blanche in order to produce as fine a
speaker as they could… and the results certainly don’t disappoint. Even at its
highest levels the sounds the Reference 1 DC produces remain free of
distortion and colouration. In terms of spectoral decay its performance
proves first class, whilst the dispersions characteristics of the tweeter and
midrange driver, in a design termed the Transmission Front Plate, are
remarkable and create an incredibly integrated soundscape. As a result
users will feel awash with detailed sounds that genuinely appear to
surround. Not to disappoint in those vital lower frequencies, the Reference
DC 1 also proves thoroughly adept in its bass production offering precision
and clarity in the deepest and darkest moments of a movie soundtrack. The
new model is available in three finishes and is a truly outstanding model. Its
manufacturers, Canton, are right to be so proud!

SHOW REVIEW
The
Good Stuff
London’s most central AV and Hi-Fi show is quickly
becoming its most successful. HAMISH McNAIRWILSON reports back from his recent
jaunt to the Novotel West…
The What Hi-Fi? Sound and
Vision Show and the
accompanying Best of Stuff is
rapidly becoming the first port of
call for manufacturers in the AV
industry looking to exhibit their
wares to a London-based
audience. On the first weekend of
November the industry descended
upon Hammersmith’s Novotel
West once again, to mark the third
year the two shows have been
presented on a single bill. Since the
introduction of the former in 2003 it
appears to have gone from strength
to strength and is a fitting showcase
for a magazine that is continually
expanding its global circulation and
sphere of influence. With the full
weight of its publications and an
expansive advertising campaign to
support it, the show benefits from an
exceptionally high profile amongst
consumers. And those present, having to be
prepared to stump up the £12 entry fee, take
their interests seriously and appear to have the
money to spend. As sprinting legend Linford Christie
Get rid of
and Spurs and England keeper Paul Robinson entered
those wires
with Acoustic the building, it became clear What Hi-Fi’s word is getting
Energy
around.
There was a lot to draw in the consumer this year, with everything from
the smoothest AV furniture to the most immersing in-car speaker system on
show. Cutting-edge gadgets were to be found at every turn, whilst the What
Hi-Fi team had pulled out all the stops once more, with their own HDTV
demonstration the piece de resistance. High-definition entertainment proved
a common theme at the Novotel with many manufacturers dedicating
sizeable sections of their display to its stunning images. Particularly popular
footage included Jerzey Dudek’s heroics during Liverpool’s European Cup
victory and some scantily clad glamour girls playing American football. Quite
where the latter footage was sourced from no one quite knew, but it seemed
to be pulling in a fair crowd. This kind of pandering to the marketplace was
evident throughout the show, but while hoards of middle aged men were
drawn to the Nokia stand to watch three women in hotpants shake their
booties to music stored on their phones, I naturally marched past to check
out LG’s latest flat-screen TVs… honest.

iKnow what iWant from
Monitor Audio
Flat-screen TVs have been our focus this month and the Best of
Stuff provided an effective platform for many of the strongest
competitors. Sharp benefited from a particularly well-positioned stand, upon
which the new LC-65GD1E Widescreen LCD-TV - a 65-inch addition to the
renowned Aquos Series – assumed pride of place. The biggest of its kind on
display and, we are told, the biggest available in the world today, it looked as
impressive as it sounds. Talking to Sharp’s Head of Marketing
Communications, Mike Garbiel, it became clear that things won’t end here.
Sharp are already working on even larger models and with the resolution,
clarity and brightness all outstanding soon these could become the weapon
of choice in even the most expansive home cinemas.
JVC also set up home on this floor and had an inviting stand. While the
electronics giant’s primary focus at the event was their latest batch of
camcorders – which were winning a rave reception from many a roving eye –
it was their LCD-TVs that drew our gaze.
room with a view
Philips also had a sizeable presence and their stand proved useful, as it was
here I inadvertently bumped into many of the industry’s top PR men. As
chaps who have seen many shows come and go, float or sink, I was eager to
hear their opinions and Richard Stevenson, for one, was impressed:.
“Overall,” he concluded, “it was a damn fine show that could easily build
momentum over the next few years to become the consumer electronics
mega-event that the old ‘Live’ show always wanted to be but never quite
managed.” Philips also had possibly the biggest range of LCD-TVs available
today on show, highlighting why – despite the rampant innovation from other
top manufacturers – they continue to sell so many across Europe.
Pioneer, Fujitsu and Toshiba were all fighting for the attention of those
with their heart set on a top notch TV too. However, some companies took
things a whole lot further. It wasn’t surprising to see SIM2’s room dedicated
to their stunning new C3X projector, which was firing on to a remarkably
wide screen. The room was completely packed out when I put in an
appearance, with the eager onlookers being treated to a clip from the new
Star Wars DVD. As the most advanced, compact and best value 3-Chip DLP
projector on the market today, it left its audience aghast, effortlessly. It would
cost them at least £10,999 to have one of these firing away in what would
have to be a dedicated facility, but is that an unreasonable price to pay for
something capable of giving your local Odeon a serious run for its money?
Sony also targeted the truly
cinematic, with their QUALIA 004
projector up and running at the
show, treating a substantial queue
of visitors to some delectable
high-definition visuals over
the course of the weekend.
MP3’s a crowd
This event is as much about
the audio kit as it is the visual
and I found my highlight of the
former on show in TEAC’s
sizeable room. While the firm
had a number of smart, solid
components on display it was
the CR-H225 from the new
Reference 200 Series that really
stood out. It didn’t just catch my

eye; it jumped onto my Christmas list as well. This micro component has to rank
with the most functional around, offering CD-playback, some smooth DAB relay
and a handy USB port. The latter can be used to hook up any MP3-player or
HDD device housing MP3 or WMA files. The full track information sourced from
these can be displayed on the front fascia, while the remote gives the user full
access to its content, ensuring the most straightforward and functional route to
playing these to a files to a crowd you’ll find. The CR-H225 will sell for only £270

caught the eye
Of course, if it’s an iPod your buyers
want to make a better use of then
Monitor Audio’s stand was the place to
be, with the firm’s iDeck grabbing the
attention of the many gadget lovers that
passed through the Stuff show. This
model has only been on the market a
matter of months, but has already been
snapping up the awards. The What HiFi? writers themselves clearly took a
shine to it, naming it MP3player/Accessory of the Year, a title it
fully deserves. It will cater for the
needs of virtually every iPod on the
market, allowing them to slip
comfortably aboard via the changeable
range.

flow. These two and a half-way floorstanders sounded
increasingly
worthy of their £1,200 price tag, filling the room with
synonymous
some of the most sumptuous, rich and detailed sounds,
proving that that there is life in two-channel yet.
The AV furniture market wasn’t particularly well represented at the show
this year, but while the quantity of manufacturers present may have been low, the
quality of Stil Stand’s latest products could not be denied. The stand was well
poised to pull in the crowds and with a number of artistically styled, incredibly
elegant glass options on display this is exactly what it did. We would also like to
offer the firm a special note of commendation for their new wooden flexible
media storage racks, whose artistic grace will be appreciated in any living
environment.

the full content of their iPod via
the slickly styled remote,
pumping out the tunes in an
impressive quality. With 18W of power per channel, the speakers – which
benefit from Monitor’s wealth of experience in this area – are sufficient to
comfortably fill most rooms.
Another award-winning range sure to catch the eye was to be found at the
Yamaha stand. The firm’s Digital Sound Projectors were a popular draw, with the
demonstration suite constantly bursting at its seams. The reaction to these has
been astonishing, in both the industry and the buying public. As the models
unleashed on the market continue to sell like hotcakes, expect to hear a lot
more from these recipients of a What Hi-Fi? award in the coming year.
scoping out the opposition
As I was focusing on the most innovative solutions, I soon found myself in the
Acoustic Energy room looking at another: the world’s first Wi-Fi Internet radio.
This smart little model will work alongside any wireless web connection, offering
users access to any of the thousands of radio stations broadcast online at the
touch of a button or two. Working in partnership with Internet radio technology
expert Reciva, an Internet gateway ensures over 2,500 stations (and counting)
can be served up via this model, in detailed, rich and impacting sounds. It hits
the market at a meagre £200 and is another product I’ll have my beady eye on
come the festive season. And I’m not the only one: “We had a vast amount of
positive feedback and were delighted with the sheer number of people who
said that they would have bought the radio there and then if we had been
selling them on our stand! Thankfully we will have them in the shops by
December in time for the big Christmas rush,” commented Laura Rettie, the
firm’s Group Marketing Coordinator.
The innovation seen here was matched by that apparent on the stand of
The Opposition Group whose hifidelio Pro, from Hermstedt, was assuming pride
of place. The is another player that serves the needs of the digitalised
generation, with its 160gb hard drive able to store and manage its user’s music
collection. With high-quality CD-playback, Wi-Fi abilities and Internet radio also
accessible, it is no wonder we could barely get a look in as visitors crowded
around the £799 bargain.
Following a superb showing at Bristol’s Sound & Vision Show earlier in the
year, we were expecting great things from Neat Acoustics. Venturing up to their
room, we found the firm showing off their spanking new MOTIVE loudspeaker
return to form
Mission returned to the same sizeable surroundings in which they
debuted their fine M-Cube system in 2004, with the Elegante up and
running this time around. However, the real news from this room was
the return of audiolab to a London show, back due to popular
demand. The 8000AV and 8000X7 seven channel pre and power amps
will have certainly caused a stir amongst anyone seeking to achieve
the finest of sound set-ups. In fact, the 8000 Series, dressed in an
entirely fresh, chic look, was out in force, effectively restating the case
for this much loved and lauded brand.
And talking of much loved brands, darlings of the DAB world
PURE had made home across the corridor and had their full
selection of best selling products on offer. These included the
incredibly durable Oasis, which comes fully equipped to cope with
the rigours of outdoor life, and the small yet smart DMX-50
MICROSYSTEM.
Another company showing some serious innovation was Wilson Benesch
whose stunning new Torus System certainly caught the eye. Built to transform
any audio system and negate the flaws associated with a conventional
subwoofer, this inimitable design is like nothing that’s ever been seen before
and was shown to produce bass of the highest quality for the domestic and, as
importantly, the burgeoning high-end export market.
Amongst the other firms causing something of stir at the show were KEF
with their usual feast of speakers, Denon with their iPod compatible home
cinema systems and Creek, who were demonstrating some new components
and Epos speakers to spectacular effect, with Mike Creek himself personally
handling any queries. The Classic 5350SE integrated amplifier showed many
improvements on its predecessor on this public debut, whilst the new Destiny
components look sure to recapture the interest of anyone with a soft spot for
two-channel, thanks to the huge advancements found herein.
The footfall looked great throughout the Friday I was there and all the
exhibitors we spoke to were happy with business. A lot of effort had gone into
the displays and I left thoroughly satisfied that I’d had a great fill of fine
technologies. There was plenty of new kit for me to see, so no doubt the
potential customers lapped it up. Those we spoke to certainly seemed to know
their stuff and were looking out for ways to improve their systems. And we trust
this prized batch of manufacturers were more than able to help…
The Opposition Group served up something of a treat...

SHARP AQUOS RANGE
No company has done more to drive the LCD-TV market than Sharp, so it is no surprise to see
the renowned Aquos range pushing back the parameters once again. This month sees the
launch of their latest steed, the incredible LC-65GD1E. As the biggest commercially available
LCD-TV in the world, there is no denying its impact. Couple this with its ability to play the
richest 1080i HDTV format and you have a home cinema experience that is tough to compete
with. Image enhancing features such as Sharp's QS (Quick Shoot) Technology ensure the
optimum picture regardless of what is being shown, whilst the Advanced Super View lowreflection black negates the influence of undesirable viewing conditions. Other fresh
boundary-breakers from Sharp include the innovative Aquos P50 Series - the first LCD-TVs
specifically designed to draw the best images from the PAL signal most buyers continue to
view – and the GD7, high-end, titanium series of LCD-idTVs.

The World Is Flat
When times are tight it’s important we focus on what
will sell. SAM FULLER introduces some of the best
options from a truly burgeoning marketplace…
There was a time when the full colour CRT TV was king,
sitting proudly at the heart of every living room
throughout the land. It was a popular addition, bringing life
and entertainment to the home, until a vicious coup d’etat
was launched, it was dethroned and cast on to the
electronics scrap heap to rot, alongside with the VCR, mini
disc-player and audio-cassette. What once seemed the first
fundamental of our entertainment has gone the way of
fashion and is being replaced by younger, slimmer models
everywhere as we speak. Here in the UK, the trend is
already bearing fruit for retailers as millions of customers
clamber aboard the bandwagon, joining the flat-screen TV
revolution thanks to a combination of stunningly bright
images, compact dimensions and chic aesthetics.
Of course, for many a functioning CRT TV the scrap
heap remains a destiny rather than a reality. Indeed, while
figures vary, our friends Alphason Designs have argued that
there are approximately 60-million of these left in the UK,
baying out to be replaced by a more attractive model. But
which to choose? Well, while it was the plasma screen that
originally drove the market, these days the LCD-TV is
growing in size and stature. Both remain popular, with the
latter starting to eat into the share of the former.
Meanwhile, with other technologies like SED and Organic
LED on the horizon, each offering a raft of benefits, these
are not entirely safe. No future is assured and with LG
Philips contemplating a last ditch attempt to resuscitate
and salvage the CRT courtesy of their SuperSlim technology
and Texas Instruments’ DLP allowing manufacturers to
simply rearrange those cathode ray tubes, yet secure a
stunning picture, the rear projection TV’s credentials have
never been better. It’s surprising our consumers aren’t
covering their ears and screaming in sheer confusion. Well,
we’re here to help, so if you’ve been wondering which
models you should be stocking in this ever changing and
unpredictable climate, here are our hints, all of which hope
to finally consign the CRT to history…

LG 71PY10
While on paper something big, bold, in your face and
clad in gold might have all the wrong connotations,
LG’s 71PY10 is far from the embodiment of
ostentation it may sound. In fact it is a classy
looking, extraordinary piece of home cinema
equipment. A huge 71-inches in size, it is
comfortably the biggest plasma in this batch.

theatre system and a terrestrial digital broadcast
receiver additional, aesthetically-matched options.
This kind of quality doesn’t come cheap and the
gargantuan model is expected to command a price

doubt that it’s a price some will be willing to pay.

recently they’ve undergone something of a revolution. The latest range to prove they can
produce competitive pictures comes from Sony. The Bravia series KDF-E50A12U, released
last month, produces the kind of bright, natural images the home cinema buff demands,
thanks to the introduction of the firm’s proprietary 3LCD technology. This employs three
projection panels – rather than the usual one - to provide a constant, detailed picture. The
inclusion of Cinema Black PRO boosts the contrast ratio too and, with HDTV on the way this
will relay it with aplomb. The 50-inch screen proves immersing and thanks to the inclusion of

idTV tuner and are set to relieve many CRT TVs of
their duties. Each member of the WLT58 series

BEAMAX ARTSOUNDSCREEN
Beamax's
ArtSoundScreen
comes to life
Installation Art
These days Beamax have a lot more to offer than a
straightforward screen, as TOBY WATSON discovers…
That a projector screen is aesthetically intrusive has always been a
given. Even in the most avant garde of apartments it would impossible for
a sizeable plain or bordered drape to look like a deliberate, arty addition.
And those that roll away aren’t exempt from criticism either, as they still
make some of their bulky, unattractive presence felt. The same could be
said of many powerful cinematic speaker systems. No matter how much
panache or artistic flare has been left to run free in the design process,
having a toddler-sized component in every corner is hardly something
those with minimalist inclinations are likely to endorse.
It is for these reasons that the finest, most immersing, projectorbased home cinema systems tend to be found hidden away in a dedicated
room rather than within the social hub of the modern home. Indeed, in an
era when considered interior design is more important than ever and space
is at a premium, it is this that limits the proliferation of the home theatre.
But both conventions and conventional concerns are there to be
broken, and this is where our most thoughtful manufacturers prove their
worth. Enter Beamax and their revolutionary new home cinema concept,
the ArtSoundScreen. According to this growing force in the European
marketplace’s philsophy, home cinema is more than just image or sound it is a complete experience in which the viewer becomes immersed in an
experience, and it is this that the ArtSoundScreen aims to do.
“Up until now,” Beamax claim, “this has been reserved for people who
have the opportunity to fit out a separate room for the purpose,” with the
integration process a laborious and highly skilled art in itself. Compromise
is invariably the order of the day, with the more en vogue members of the
house often clashing with their entertainment-orientated peers. But, while
hiding kit away requires both effort and invention, in the ArtSoundScreen
Beamax have created a solution that is proud to show its face.
just the art
That’s all very well, but why would people want to see it? Well, because
they can have a photo of their choice or any image from an expansive
catalogue printed on to the acoustically transparent screen, allowing the
system to effectively masquerade as an alluring piece of art: a fitting

disguise for the most chic of abodes. Convenient too, a solitary push of a
button on the wireless remote control and an unprinted acoustically
transparent screen rolls into place, ready to receive images from the
projector of choice. With some powerful left-centre-right speakers
mounted behind the screens, a cinematic quality of sound is reproduced
through them, emerging from apparently nowhere.
This unique home cinema experience succeeds in integrating sound,
image and art in a single product, making it a straightforward and
appealing choice for consumers and installers alike. Inimitable, customised
screens can be delivered to order from material supplied by a client, whilst
a catalogue of original artworks is also available for them to explore. A
wide selection of frames is also available, giving every ArtSoundScreen the
kind of finish its user demands. As a result even the most fussy of buyers
should be able to secure themselves a happy marriage of sound, image
and aesthetics, worthy of fitting into their prized home environment.
It is projector screens themselves for which Beamax is best known and
it is no surprise the one included in the ArtSoundScreen is a little special.
Its cleverly designed woven structure makes it 100% acoustically
transparent, allowing the speakers behind it to perform to their optimum,

entirely free of hindrance. Nevertheless, it is composed of high-quality fabric,
manufactured in matt white to ensure the projector has the finest platform on
which to display its pictures. As with all top quality cinematic screens, it
comes in a 16:9 widescreen format of 55–110 inches diagonally – enough to
engross even the least attentive of film fans.
sounding board
Viewers will benefit from an original soundscape too, as the three speakers
positioned behind the acoustic screen forge an inimitable and direct link
between sound and image. This contributes to a complete AV experience of
some impact. The speakers are two-way models, boasting 200W of power
apiece, which ensures they will fill a fairly sizable room with ease. Each
package comes delivered equipped with these as standard, in addition to an
RF remote control, and is packed in a heavy duty box.
There can be no doubt the ArtSoundScreen is a pioneering product that
effectively addresses a number of problems that have stifled the explosion of
the projector-based home cinema. With these in your arsenal you will have no
problem allaying the concerns of prospective buyers, worried about potential
design intrusion. They offer buyers the ability to bring the most immersing

INSTALLATION FOCUS
Riding The Wave
Installers Pacific Wave show KATIE BATES the value of CI with one of their grandest designs…
I went to Andover to visit a long lost Aunt many years ago and for some
reason I’d never felt the need to return. Whether this was a reflection of her
hospitality, the place itself or the sheer distance I’m not entirely sure, but
when the guys at Wildwood PR told me about a rather special installation
project they’d heard of down in that neck of the woods, the time had finally
come to head back to Hampshire. The specification sheet was in itself
enough of a pull, and with a vast array of technological touches included I
was excited about the prospect of seeing it all in action. As someone who
only became aware of the custom installation world through working in the
conventional AV sector, this was to prove an enlightening trip. For not only
did this delectable family home include a huge array of entertainment
products I would, no doubt, have stumbled across down on the High Street at
my local independent dealership – these came hooked up to possibly the
most intelligent network, environmental controls and security system I have
come across on my travels.
a woman’s touch
Of course, having admitted I’m a relative newby to the installation sphere why
would you be inclined to take my word for it? Well, the good news is that you
don’t have to, as this particular home has been nominated for a BIDA (British
Interior Design Award) for Technology Integration and Lighting Design of the
Year. This award is a new addition to the prestigious batch which, its
organisers claim, are the only design awards to truly focus on the many
facets of the professional interior designer’s craft. Open to designers, clients,
manufacturers, importers and end-users of design projects or products, the
awards are sponsored by, amongst others, lighting control specialists LEAX.
This latest addition, which will have undoubtedly drawn the eyes of
companies from across our industry, will reward: “the scheme completed in
the previous 12 months that has
made best use of technology
and/or lighting within a
residential, leisure or commercial
setting. The judges,” it continues,
“will be looking for the lighting
and/or technology has been

standards of interior or
architectural design a priority.”
Having been lucky enough to
encounter this particular
residential project myself, I’m in
Table-top control, courtesy of Crestron
no doubt that despite being ridden

with the most progressive of technologies,
the designers’ aesthetic concerns were not
been compromised. As What’s New has
been consistently showing over the last few
months, these days technology doesn’t
come with an additional price to pay for the
aesthetically concerned homemaker. You
often hear industry insiders talk of the ‘wife
factor’ and while none go so far as to put it
into print their musings on what the 21st
century female finds acceptable for fear of
being labelled a chauvinists with antiquated
values, there is no doubt some have a point.
After all, considering minimalism is proving
the flavour of the decade, I know I don’t
want my carefully tailored surroundings
cluttered up with all kinds of intrusive
electronics… and many of my
contemporaries seem inclined to agree. But
that is where projects like this come in and,
up and down the country, people are
thanking their lucky stars for them…
The brains behind the operation...
Naturally, it took many different parties
to complete this stunning overhaul of what had been a relatively normal
Hampshire abode. Installers Pacific Wave were arguably the most crucial player
and the firm has a history of achieving great things with the latest technologies in
both the corporate and the residential sphere. With these guys on board a home
can be turned into a haven of relaxation, an incredibly secure fortress, an arena of
the finest entertainments, an effective and fully equipped workspace and the most
progressive of playrooms. This is the Pacific Wave promise and from what we’ve
seen they certainly deliver on it. The team purport to provide the complete design,
installation and support service, creating a system to reflect who their client is
and able to evolve with their tastes and needs. And one particular family down in
Hampshire are more than happy to bear testament to this.
see the light
Controlling and monitoring security is something any family who have just
invested sizable sums in their home would appreciate and this is a defining
element of the much lauded Andover project. A new user-friendly CCTV system
and exterior lighting were installed by Pacific Wave, making use of the latest I/P
possibilities developed during their work in the commercial sector. As a result,
whether at a computer or in one of the many rooms fitted with a plasma, the

Another area of growing importance in the modern smarthouse is that of
environmental control. Herein we encountered an impressive lighting system
that pervades every area of the house and its grounds. Despite being founded
upon Lutron’s highly complex, dynamic and versatile Grafik Eye system this
proves simple to control. It encompasses fibre optic lighting in the pool for

prospective intruders like the proverbial Christmas tree, forest and garden

ambient and task lighting we often come across in these kind of projects.
Some blinds, provided courtesy of CEDIA Expo regulars Silent Gliss, are
cleverly tied in with this in crucial areas and all of the controls are, of course,
accessible through some of Crestron’s most intuitive control panels.

Typically, it was the fun section with which I was most enthralled and here I
found a lot of familiar components – kit that anyone in AV will immediately
know the value and abilities of. Entertainment was a major theme making its
presence felt in virtually every room, but the cream of the crop was
undoubtedly the dedicated home theatre. With SIM2’s HT300+ Projector at its
heart, clearly this had been designed for a family dedicated to quality
performance. Accompanied by a Bose Acoustimass15 speaker system, a hard
hitting Rell Storm subwoofer and much, much more, everything came
controlled by a TSP6000 from Crestron’s Isys range. This 15-inch, tilting touchpanel is one of the most advanced around and boasts pictures of impressive
colour, great graphics and a built-in web server itself. Bose, meanwhile,
proved particularly popular in this install, with their speakers also deployed in
the games room, around the pool and at various locations on the outside.
Around the home it was Sonance’s RS1 recessed speakers that made the
cut, providing a great sound wherever one walks from their ultra-discreet
enclosures. With Audio ReQuest multimedia servers working behind the
scenes, the residents are guaranteed great entertainment whenever they are.
And this is before they have recourse to call upon any of the five 42-inch
plasma screens, the 50-inch plasma in the family room or the 40-inch LCD-TV.
The conservatory, dining room, any of the bedrooms, the spa by the
swimming pool and even the kitchen offer the family the means to watch

SECURE AN AD-VANTAGE
The CEDIA US Expo is the first port of call for major install manufacturers seeking to launch their latest
wares… and Vantage Point didn’t disappoint in 2005. With a wealth of fresh universal plasma mounts to
display, they proved to be the talk of the town.
The U50 plasma mount, designed to support virtually any 30-50-inch monitor weighing up to 90kg,
certainly made the right impression. This lightweight, aluminium
wall rail is functionally rigid and a looker too. It weighs less than
2kg, making it easy to install, while its design eliminates worries of
covering up wiring wall connections. The adjustable sliding wall
plates allow for mounting to any stud spacing, while the side-to-side
alignment of the wall rail and monitor eliminate the need
for arduous pre-calculations during the installation process.
The U50 is easily adjustable as its mount can be tilted back
two degrees and
forward 15. With the
final position set, the
monitor is positively
secured to the wall
rails by accessing the
wall rail from the end
and rotating the upper
rail. Its shallow wall
profile – of just under
three-inches, enhances
the on-wall experience.
The package comes
complete with monitor installation and mounting hardware, which
makes it as universal as they come.
The U70 plasma mount is designed to cope with 42-70-inch

YOU CAN MOUNT ON ME
Four new additions to Vantage Point’s Axsys line
of LCD Mounting Systems were also on show over
in Indianapolis. These have been
engineered to hold LCD-TVs with
200x200mm, 200x100mm or
100x100mm VESA hole patterns. A
thoroughly cost effective mounting
solution for larger LCD-TVs
demanding greater support and
articulation, they are part of the Axsys
200mm line.
The first of these, AX2AWL01, is a
wall mount that can safely hold monitors
weighing up to 45kg. Its unique design
allows for the levelling of the monitor and
up to five degrees rotation left or right, in
any position it is placed in. The five degrees
upward tilt and 15 degrees downward tilt ensures
a precise viewing angle can be secured, and when
the 18.5-inch extension from the wall is in use
this can be taken even further. The extended arm
is as thoughtful as it is useful and disappears
behind the monitor when it is pushed back to the
wall, keeping things looking coolly uncluttered.
Whatever your installation need, this will
ensure the user of convenience and functionality.
Corner mounting, fixed position viewing or
applications where the monitor must be turned
34
frequently between viewing positions are all
areas where it will excel, so if you deal in the
more sizeable LCD-TVs, this could be the one
for you.
The AX2ACL01 is similarly convenient and
shares a lot of the characteristics of its fellow
range member, but can be deployed in scenarios
where ceiling mounting is more appropriate. With
this in place a remarkable 360 degrees of rotation
are possible ensuring that, no matter where the
viewer is in the room, they’ll have an optimal
viewing angle. It is also worth noting that the
AX2SBL01, a centre speaker mounting bracket,
can be easily hooked onto this model and indeed
the others, giving a user convenience in their
sound as well as their vision. It is designed to
maximise a surround sound experience, for a
minimal cost, and should help make this range
a serious hit.
The third new addition to the team, the
AX2WL01, caters for the same size of LCD-TVs
and boasts a unique key hole design, making
installation an absolute breeze. Finally,
AX2WL02, keeps an LCD-TV similarly tight to the
wall, but with the addition of five degrees upward
tilt and 15 degrees downward tilt, ensuring a
prospective viewing angle won’t be prejudiced to
certain sized members of the family.

RIGHT ON CUE
CAUSING A RUCKUS
The Connected Home show, held at London's Olympia, will be the scene of some stunning
demonstrations, and one that's sure to have repercussions for our industry and catch the eye of
attendees will be provided courtesy of Ruckus Wireless. This innovative firm will be showing
how they can supply broadcast quality TV, video and gaming around the modern home over a
Wi-Fi network.
With the smart era upon us, the consumer is coming to demand entertainment and
communications around the home, yet the cost and aesthetic intrusion of cabling is something of a
stumbling block. As a result, a wireless network would seem an obvious solution, but until now the
transmission of multimedia content has typically required separate distribution networks, as offthe-shelf Wi-Fi products can only stream video over a short distance before it becomes un-viewable.
The new Ruckus smart antenna and multicast system, however, should change all this. It claims
to reliably deliver high-quality video, audio, games and rich data anywhere around the home effectively enabling 'true' triple play over a wireless network, eliminating installation inconvenience,
wiring costs and the unattractive sight of cabling. Ruckus believes that service providers' ability to
increase the flexibility and functionality of triple play in the home could prove critical to installers'
future business, allowing them to offer greater functionality to a greater number of people.

clean, impacting, stereo power. The amp has been meticulously crafted to match the Danish artiste’s
loudspeakers’ impedance and tonality, making it an ideal partner, which will be appreciated by the
firm’s many fans. With Artcoustic’s subwoofers also worked into the system, even the most attractive
systems will never have sounded so good. The PA300 will hit the market at £499 and is available for

SCORING A DOUBLE
When BenQ announced their ambitious plans to take the European home cinema projector
market by storm not everyone was convinced. However, when it comes to industry
commendation the firm have done exceptionally well this year, beating off competition
from many of their more established and experienced peers.
The PE7700 HD2+ DLP projector has certainly caused something of a storm and,
fresh from triumphing in the prestigious EISA’s Best Product 2005-2006 award, it’s been
reaping the complements once again. It’s latest success came at last month’s What HiFi? Sound and Vision Awards. When under review the magazine exclaimed: "this is a
dramatic projector, at an unbelievable price. Just buy one!" The criteria the award was
judged on included performance, value for money, future considerations and reliability and
it seems that this mould breaker excelled in every area. A state of the art, HD-ready model,
BenQ's Senseye technology helps provide some staggering pictures. And now, with two of
the biggest industry awards around to its name, maybe its time you considered the PE7700.

A TAILORED CHOICE
Thanks to a new and extraordinary format inkjet
printer, projection screen innovators TCI can now
incorporate full colour graphics and lettering onto the
surface of their screens. This means the border of
each screen and the bands around the image area
can be tailored to whatever individual desires a buyer
may have.
In the commercial sphere, this would allow space
for names, logos and promotional messages, which
would always remain in the viewer’s direct line of
focus. This unique selling point is certainly a bonus
and would make TCI screens the ideal choice for an
array of business clients. The whole screen surface
can also be printed on, allowing both the manual and
electrical screens in the TCI range to act as a banner.
The extra services come at a very reasonable
cost, particularly if buyers are ordering in quantities.
Structurally these consist of a one off set-up charge,
plus an additional price per screen. A leaflet
illustrating the service in more detail is available and
we advise anyone dealing with business clients or
seeking to offer a bespoke service in residential
installations to take a look.

TIME FOR LIVING
Wherever there is new technology, you are likely to find something from Sony, so it is no
surprise to see the firm making a confident step towards creating a truly digital living
room. The VAIO(R) XL1 Digital Living System is certainly a smart option and has been
billed by its manufacturers as a boundary breaking solution. Comprising two smartly
styled, sleek components, which would look at home on any AV rack, it offers users the
fullest control over the entertainment in their living room.
The Digital Living System comprises a high-end multimedia PC and a 200-disc
media changer/recorder. The PC connects to a TV via an HDMI(TM) cable, allowing highdefinition video and multi-channel digital audio stored in its data banks to be displayed
on screen through the single connection.
Close collaboration with Microsoft and tight integration with the Microsoft Windows
XP Media Center Edition 2005 operating system ensure unique functionality only when
using the XL1 system's disc changer. Discs inserted into the changer are automatically
detected by the PC, which downloads the available metadata on each one, including
jewel case covers and artist information. For movies, an in-depth synopsis is also
downloaded in addition to the star, director, producer details and more. All of this
information is easily sorted and accessed using the wireless keyboard or remote
control, which are included in the package.
The product is currently making waves on the other side of the
pond, with Mike Abary, vice president of VAIO product marketing for
Sony Electronics in the U.S., declaring: “Users can still manage all
their meaningful entertainment content such as downloaded music,
home movies and personal photos. But the really groundbreaking
functionality is the additional ability to easily organise, sort and
access packaged content -- all of the DVD movies and audio CDs
that have been traditionally relegated to a bookshelf."
The system also affords users a thoroughly convenient way of
backing up their CD and DVD collections, is a powerful PC in
itself with all the associated functionality, and offers one of the
most engaging and convenient routes to web-browsing about. The
Digital Living System will be sold as a package and is available
soon over in the US for about $2,300. Look out for its launch here
– it certainly has a lot to offer!

NATIONAL SMARTHOUSE
An innovative group of universities and companies is appealing
to the house-building industry, local authorities and healthcare
chiefs to help hasten the public's embrace of smarthouse
technologies. The smarthouse lifestyle could be the norm in the
UK within the next five years - but only if consumers have the
option of using it, says TAHI (The Application Home Initiative), a
not-for-profit group whose members include FTSE 100
companies, SME businesses and leading research
organisations.
People in the construction, health and welfare industries
are being invited to discover the enormous potential of smart
technologies and hear from pioneers in their own fields at next
month's TAHI Conference. It is the first time that TAHI has
opened its doors to people outside the future technology sector.
TAHI's marketing director, Mike Windsor, said: "Smart
technology will revolutionise life, making it more comfortable,
convenient and secure. The technology is already out there; the
biggest hurdle now is getting consumers to embrace it. That is
why we want the involvement of those who build our homes and
take care of our health and welfare services - they touch our
daily lives and have a crucial role to play in transforming the
smart home from concept to reality."
Smart house trailblazers speaking at the conference
include BT, energy providers EDF, York University's Centre for
Usable Home Technology, Bryant Homes, Kent County Council,
intelligent buildings specialists iandi, Severn Trent Water, Initial
Community Care, system integrators Tridium, and the Office of
the Deputy Prime Minister's national DigiTV community project.
A smart house is defined as one where all electronic
equipment and services - from the washing machine, gas meter,
lighting and heating to the television and sound system - are
networked and can be controlled remotely via a PC or mobile
phone. Home security can be monitored from the office or the
beach; emails can be read on the TV screen, the fridge will order
shopping on the Internet and if you leave the lights on a monitor
will raise the alarm that energy is being wasted. Telecare and
telemedicine services enabled by smart technology will allow
elderly people to enjoy living independently for longer, and
unnecessary trips to the doctor or hospital will be a thing of
the past.
Earlier this year TAHI members completed a programme of
high-level DTI-backed trials in conjunction with Loughborough
and Heriot Watt universities to demonstrate and promote
interoperability between different appliances and services and to
test consumer attitudes to smart appliances installed in their
own homes. The TAHI Conference in Henley on Thames will be
preceded by a review of the trials.

TRUMPING UP THE CASH
The potential for a CI market of some
magnitude in Dubai has long been noted by
those in the know, and this is set to be
furthered by American real estate and
gambling mogul Donald Trump’s recent
manoeuvring. With real estate business
booming in the city the Trump Organisation
has weighed in, unveiling plans for a landmark hotel on the Palm Jumeirah.
Having teamed up with local property developers Nakeel LLC, Trump is to
build a tulip-shaped hotel on the man-made island off Dubai's Jumeirah
coastline. As the largest privately held company in New York, the Trump
Organisation is one of the world's leading real estate developers and has an
extensive portfolio of high-profile properties. This is, however, the first time that
the company has made any inroads into the Middle East and reaffirms the
current high level of confidence in both Dubai and Nakheel's developments.
Dubai is already the region's fastest growing tourist destination, with the number
of tourists doubling to a staggering 5.4-million between 1999 and 2004.
With a massive market for companies offering all kinds of lifestyle and
interior products - from world class furnishings and interiors to the latest in
cutting-edge audio and visual installation technology – beginning to blossom, it’s
a market local firm Al Bishara International are already starting to exploit. This
specialist AV systems supplier is going from strength to strength as Sales
Manager Samar Singh Bhal explained: "Due to low import duties and the ability to
obtain supplies direct from manufacturers, prices have been kept substantially
lower than in other markets in the region and there is a wealth of home
entertainment and audio visual systems now available in the market place."
PALME 2005 proved a great springboard for the firm in 2005 and they will be
taking a larger stand at the show in 2006. "The key benefits we saw at Palme
2005 were the high number of trade enquiries from all sectors, the increase in
brand awareness, technological updates and competitor information. After the
show business was very good, based on feedback received during the exhibition
and even to date, we are still maximising on the impact of this show," Mr Singh
commented.
The INSTALL section at PALME 2006 is a focal point for installers, specifiers
and architects to meet manufacturers and suppliers of residential and
commercial installation and integration products. For anyone seeking to win a
slice of this growing market, attendance at the event is a must. It takes place at
Dubai International Exhibition Centre from April 23-25th, 2006, and we certainly
hope to be there.

SHOW SOME DECKORUM
deckorum are an installation company known for their forward
thinking and they have successfully installed an array of products
into some of the most technically advanced homes around. Building
upon their top-notch reputation, the firm has now seen fit to branch
out and will be offering two new services relevant to both consumers
and other trades.
The first of these, deckorum consulting, is aimed directly at
developers, architects and other building consultants. This offers
them the benefit of deckorum’s expertise on a fee for time basis, for
the building and property development trades. This allows other
professions to obtain some of the best CI knowledge directly from an

involvement.
The second, deckorum pre-wire, is aimed at end-users, offering
them pre-wiring schedules and guides to follow with their own
electrician during refurbishments to ensure they cable for a good
range of future home automation technology. This approach allows
future DIY installation, but with the benefit of cabling according to a

Philips, now available in larger 32- and 42-inch options. It’s a high-quality LCD-TV when
switched on and a mirror when turned off, making it extraordinarily popular with those
investing in a whole-house installation.
The latest models have been designed to recess more easily, thus assuming the
appearance of an authentic mirror. This, in combination with the optional bespoke frames,
means they look better than ever. Both new models are HD-ready and RS232 controllable,
preparing them for both the best images and most futuristic controls.
To help promote these striking displays AWE are currently offering dealers the
outgoing 30-inch model at a knock down price, allowing these to be used to introduce
customers to the concept of mirror TVs.

THE PROCESS
CSE is to launch Pixel Magic in the UK,
as the renowned distributors make two fine
new products available to the installation fraternity.
Pixel Magic is an award-winning brand of video processing
solutions and the PE1000 Plasma Enhancer and HDMI/SDI equipped PE1000 Pro are two of its
finest models.
The former is a Digital Video Processor/Scaler providing 480i to 1080p resolution and a DVI
output to enhance DVD, Sky, Terrestrial or FreeView broadcasts with a previously unseen clarity
and precision. Component Video, S-Video, Composite Video are all supported, with the PE1000
Plasma Enhancer providing full digital processing and scaling. Signals can be output as RGBHV,
YPbPr (Component Video) or DVI-D digital video. The PE1000 utilises Genesis Microchip's DCDi
and TrueLife technologies, providing impressive de-interlacing and image detail processing for
outstanding picture quality. As a result, shockingly smooth and detailed images are assured.
The PE1000 is also equipped with the new Philips 5th generation high-quality NICAM Stereo TV
Tuner, providing crystal clear analogue TV reception quality. Capable of working alongside a
plasma, projector, DLP TV or LCD-TV, the PE1000 will maximise the potential of the source and
unleash the true quality of all your video components – all this for only £895.
The PE1000 Professional is a Digital Video Processor/Scaler with SDI and HDMI Inputs,
providing 480i to 1080p resolution. It also boasts Pixel Magic's proprietary suite of display
optimisation tools, dubbed the Pixel Magic System, which allow the installer to precisely
configure its output to its optimum.
The Pro’s benefits includes the connections you’d expect, in addition to its HDMI switching
which allows for the seamless integration of HDTV. Its Serial Digital Interface Pro provides the
highest resolution connection for SDI-equipped DVD-players or Satellite receivers. With the
further inclusion of two HDMI inputs, the PE1000 Pro, via its HDMI output, delivers a zero loss,
completely digital signal path from video source to digital display device.
With extensive optimising tools, multiple memory profiles, full RS232 control, an in-built
NICAM Stereo TV Tuner and software upgradeable architecture, Pixel Magic Systems' PE1000
Pro allows you to draw the highest quality from all the video sources you use. It hits the market
at £1,495.

By combining the best elements of one of the
largest trade communities in Professional
Lighting and Sound with Europe's biggest trade
show in Audio Visual Systems Integration,
Integrated Systems Europe and PLASA will
augment their knowledge of AV Systems, Lighting
and Sound to turn ISE 2006 into what promises to be a
truly spectacular event. The co-operation has come about in
order to establish a framework to heighten awareness of AV
systems Integration in the rental and staging environment by
harnessing the influence and standing of a major trade show with a

WHAT’S NEW
THREE’S COMPANY
CEDIA has announced three new appointments to its UK HQ, to
demonstrate its ongoing commitment to maintain high standards of service
for its mushrooming membership. Peter Aylett joins as Education Manager,
Matt Nimmons assumes the position of Operations Manager and Liane
Haynes has been appointed Office Administrator.
Peter Aylett brings plenty of experience to his role and aims to take
CEDIA’s education and certification programs to the next level, ensuring
that CEDIA maintains its standards of training and delivery on all courses.
Peter comes from an established CI background, having worked at
Grahams Hi Fi for six years and at SMC as a programmer and IT specialist,
before setting up his own consultancy, Networks Control. In the last few
years, Peter has become actively involved as a CEDIA presenter, most
recently as a Dean for the Home Networking courses at CEDIA Expo.
Industry insider Matt Nimmons joins CEDIA from British loudspeaker
manufacturer Mission, where he was Marketing Manager for three years.
Bringing plenty of marketing and organisational experience to the
association, Matt's primary responsibilities will be co-ordinating CEDIA
Expo and promotional activities. He will also provide essential back-up to
CEDIA's Operations Director, Wendy Griffiths.
Liane Haynes is CEDIA's new Office Administrator and is the first point
of contact on the phone for those calling the CEDIA office. Liane will also
be supporting Lisa Stagg with her membership role, dealing with members
on a day-to-day basis and carrying out all general administrative
responsibilities in the office.
"These are all growth steps for CEDIA" Wendy Griffiths explained.
"Taking on a new Education Manager, Operations Manager and Office
Administrator will enable us to deal efficiently with member enquiries,
organise more CEDIA events and training, continue to grow the CEDIA Expo
and ensure an all round better service for members".

STORIES FROM CEDIA
BRIGHTON REGIONAL
TRAINING GOES DOWN
A STORM
Meeting Your Needs
CEDIA Operations Director WENDY GRIFFITHS
serves up all the latest news from her HQ
following a busy month of elections, training,
watersports, appointments and more!
AGM LOOKS TO THE FUTURE
One major highlight of the Regional Event was the CEDIA AGM, which
reported impressive recent growth and looked forward to a positive
future ahead. CEDIA Chairman David Hyman announced that Stuart
Tickle of AWE and Robin van Meeuwen of Crestron had been reelected to serve as distributor and manufacturer representatives for a
further two years.
In front of a packed audience of members, the CEDIA Board
presented an overview of the Association's work. Membership now
stands at an impressive 415, up 55 on last year's figure - a reflection of
strong growth within the sector and the value placed on CEDIA
membership by the companies operating in it. CEDIA also outlined its
aims to increase membership levels in the rest of Zone 1 (Europe,
Africa, India and the Middle East).
In education, Steve Martin, Education Chair, announced that 14 new
courses were created this year, and confirmed a big rise in CEDIA
certified members. In building on this platform, Steve announced the
appointment of Peter Aylett as a dedicated Education Manager and the
presence of a training room at CEDIA's new HQ that can seat up to 28
delegates. These developments will enable an expansion of the training
course programme, improve opportunities for members to gain CEU
points and allow CEDIA to maintain high standards in education as
demand for its courses continues to grow.
CEDIA's marketing campaign also continues to go from strength to
strength. A key element of recent campaigns has been to build
awareness of custom installation amongst house builders, architects,
interior designers and consumers through editorial, advertising and
exhibition activity. CEDIA is also undertaking market research studies
into the growth of custom install and strengthening links with influential
trade associations, such as RIBA and BIDA. Investment will also
continue in the successful PR campaign, run by the diligent team at
Wildwood PR.
All in all, it's been a very successful year for CEDIA - and everything
is being done to ensure more success in the years ahead, with the
continuing co-operation, involvement and support of members.
42
The recent CEDIA Autumn Regional held at
the Thistle Hotel in Brighton attracted over
70 CEDIA members, helping them brush up
on important business, teambuilding and
technology skills during the two-day event.
The event covered a variety of subjects
for delegates - from the topical issues of
staff motivation and managing business
growth to market trends and technological
developments. Another popular course
looked at how members could become
involved in the education work CEDIA is
carrying out with architects, interior
designers and building specifiers.
In the midst of these educational
matters, delegates who were lured to
Brighton by the prospect of sunshine found
themselves in somewhat soggier
surroundings, spending an afternoon
participating in some water-based fun and
frolics at Hove Lagoon. As the October rain
lashed down, participants bravely struggled
into wetsuits to take part in windsurfing,
sailing and Zap Cat powerboating. Aside
from a drenching and a few bumps and
bruises, CEDIA spirit and togetherness
shone through the rain in an event that will
be remembered amongst its participants for
a long time to come!
CEDIA would like to thank the event
sponsors - AMX, Crestron, Gecko, Helvar,
KEF and Lutron - for their support. Details of
the next regional training event, scheduled
for February 2006, will be available soon.

PRESTIGEOUS AWARD
CEDIA Installer deckorum has won Technology Integration of the Year at
the annual BIDA idFX Awards, a showcase for all that's best in the interior
design industry. It was deckorum's sympathetic high-tech makeover of a
superb 300 year old regency property in central London, which appealed to
the judges, and earned them top spot in this hotly contested category.
CEDIA extends its warm congratulations to everyone at deckorum. Justin

CEDIA EXPO UPDATE
If these dates aren't firmly in your mind yet (or noted in your diary at
the very least), then make a note now! CEDIA Expo 2006 is taking place
at ExCeL London with training on June 19th-22nd and the exhibition
running June 20th-22nd.
ExCeL London is a thriving, easily accessible conference centre
with superb facilities in the surrounding Docklands. It will provide
6000m of exhibition space in three halls for the Expo next year - up
nearly 50% on last year - and over 80% of this space is already
reserved. Thanks to the availability of six well-equipped conference
rooms, the seminar and training programme will also be bigger and
better than ever. What's more, there's an excellent choice of venues
around the area where CEDIA's popular social and networking events
can take place.
Expo 2006 really is well on target to be the best yet. If you've not
already booked space at the event, then be sure to hurry! All enquiries
for stand sales, advertising or sponsorship packages should be made
to the event's Sales Manager Ian Morrish (+44 (0) 137 272 2001 or
email [email protected]).

SHOWTIME FOR CEDIA!
CEDIA continues to promote custom installation by participating in major
exhibitions - a grand total of six shows this Autumn alone.
We have just returned from Show House and Plan Expo. Show House
2005 took place at ExCeL London in early November and allowed us to
talk directly to an audience of housebuilders and property developers. We
also participated in Plan Expo in mid-November, the most important
exhibition in the Irish construction industry calendar. This year's Dublin
event proved the focal point of Ireland's Construction Week, featuring
stands from no fewer than five CEDIA members, Smarthomes Ltd, Home
Automation Systems, System Video Ltd, In Control Home Automation and
Avnet Technologies Ltd.
CEDIA DEVELOPMENT IN ZONE 1
Building on its success in the UK, CEDIA is taking steps to grow
membership and spread awareness of custom installation beyond the
UK into Continental Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa. To this
end, a new manufacturer-supported committee of volunteers, led by
Board Member Dean Gillings, is tasked with developing and
supporting markets in these areas. The first meeting has just taken
place, and a more detailed report will follow in the next issue. CEDIA
members wishing to get involved in this should contact Dean at
[email protected].
