I
would like to begin by thanking
Mike Rorrer and Robert Givens for
a great convention in Roanoke. If
you were not at the convention
you missed a great VFDA event.
Congratulations to Funeral Director of
the Year Rob Finch and all the others
honored for their years of service to the
funeral service profession. Special
thanks to our vendors who made it all
possible. We hope to see you all in
Newport News.
The week after I was installed as
President I was honored to represent
the VFDA at the Virginia Cemetery
Association Annual
Meeting. This was
held at Smith
Mountain Lake and
featured several days
of events including
table top exhibits,
lectures and presentations from several really good speakers.
I was impressed at the way they include
their vendors in the meetings and the
way they continually offer appreciation
to them. Even though they represent
the cemeteries they have so many
issues, which are common to us and I
plan to invite them to participate with
us more in the future.
I spent a day at the VFDA office to
help me better understand the day-today operation of the office and how the
phones are handled. During this time
Lacy, Hannah and I did a lot of planning
for the year. I was impressed with the
way we are being represented by
Advantus Strategies on a daily basis.
Our office is working to build a modern
resource library of information that can
be made available to our members and
the public. Please send copies of
anything you wish to share to the office
and it will be on file for future reference.
The VFDA office has been working
hard to help get the word out about the
new crematory regulations. I have
talked to Mike Nicodemus, 3rd Vice
President of CANA and he along with
CANA is willing to work with us to cosponsor the Crematory Operators
Classes for our members in plenty of
time to meet the July 2010 required
date. We also hope to offer training for
funeral home operators who use third
party crematory operators to make sure
they are complying with the new
regulations. Please watch your mail for
more information on these classes.
I have just returned from the Seafood
Festival put on by the Tidewater District out
on the Eastern Shore. This was a great event
and I enjoyed the food and the fellowship. I
have on my calendar a trip to the Southwest
District in December and remember to get
me the dates and I will try to get to your
district before the year is out.
I have had several requests to look at
sponsoring an International Trip and this
information has been sent to our members
in a survey format. If there is interest shown
by our members we will pursue this and it
will be at no cost to the association.
Remember the Winter Leadership Summit,
this event gets better each year and I am
really looking forward to the 2010 edition.
The Professional Development Committee is
working on a great lineup of educational
opportunities and the trip to the hill is
always a great way to promote our
profession to the lawmakers.
Take care and have a great fall. ■

A Word From Your Executive Director
Lacy S. Whittaker
I
t is funny how the years have flown by and
the many changes that come with those
past years. The future will continue to
bring us changes in technology, social
networks, and the way we do association
business and how you run your own
businesses. The last few years we have
heard messages about change within our
association, our businesses, the economy
and the world. Our association has moved
forward, had new beginnings, reflected on
the past and grown from challenges and seen
there is strength in numbers. Our membership is a vital part of our
organization and our goal is
to grow those numbers every
year. We will focus on
retaining the members we
currently have by listening to
your needs, offering quality
continuing education courses,
holding successful conventions
that are family friendly and communicate in an
effective and timely manner.
Your VFDA Board of Directors held a
Strategic Action Planning Meeting in Roanoke
in August where they brainstormed ideas for
the 2010 annual convention in Newport News,
reviewed our legislative agenda for the 2010
General Assembly session, discussed ways
to offer timely and meaningful continuing
education courses, and ways to retain and
recruit members in the association. Your
board and committees are moving your
association forward to make VFDA the
leading resource for licensed funeral directors
in Virginia.
As I write this article, I continue to look at
a black and white picture on my desk that
Keister Whitt gave me of my grandfather
many, many, many years ago when he lived in
Danville and worked at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral
Home, where he started his funeral service
career. As I look at this picture, of four men
standing proud of their funeral home and the
services they provide to families in their
time of need, I think of the generations that
followed that are a part of this association
and what our association stands for. Although
there will continue to be challenges and
changes, it is you “the member” that is a
vital part of our organization and the funeral
profession. Without you, we would have
neither.
It is an honor to serve you as Executive
Director and I look forward to working with
you this year. ■
Generations have counted on us.
You can too.
For more than a century, Batesville Casket Company
has been on the leading edge of the funeral industry.
Our long history of innovation has changed the face
of funeral service, from advancements in merchandising
and design to new materials and personalization
options.
While products and services have changed dramatically
over time, our mission remains the same: to help
families honor the lives of those they love. We fully
expect the next hundred years to build on that heritage
as we work with future generations of funeral directors
and the families they serve.

New President and Board of Directors
Announced at 121st Convention
he VFDA 2009-2010 President and Board of
Directors were introduced at its 121st
Convention held at the Hotel Roanoke and
Conference Center in Roanoke, Va., June 13June 17, 2009.
The new president, C. Keister Whitt, III, CFSP, of
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home in Danville, said he
chose the funeral service industry not by some
divine intervention or lifelong dream, but by
watching funeral professionals go about their
work on a day-to-day basis. He saw how funeral
professionals always help in a time of need and he
wanted to make a difference for a hurting family.
Whitt began his work in the funeral industry when
he went to work part time for Wrenn-Yeatts
Funeral Home in 1980. “In 1981, I was given the
opportunity to work for Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral
Home full time during the summer," according to
Whitt. "It was then that I realized I wanted a career
in the funeral service industry." Following that
summer he moved to Richmond and worked for
A.W. Bennett Funeral Home while attending school
and serving his apprenticeship. Whitt completed
the Associated Program in Funeral Service at John
Tyler Community College in 1983. He returned to
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home in 1983 and became an
owner in 1994.
As VFDA president, Whitt's goals for the next year
are to grow the membership by defining the real
value of membership and selling those values to
funeral professionals in the state. He also plans to
offer learning opportunities for members that they
can put to work in their funeral homes immediately.
Whitt stated that he tries to emulate what he has
learned over the years from Ryland Bennett, Bill
Bradley, Charlie Morehead, Clifton Rowland, Bobby
Riddle, Sam Harrison, and many friends that he has
made in the VFDA. “I only hope I can give back to
the funeral profession as much as I have taken
away from it,” he said. "The VFDA will be the voice
of funeral service in Virginia and we are going to
embrace technology and look at ways it can work
for us!" ■

Virginia Military Funeral Honors for
Unclaimed Veterans' Cremains
VIRGINIANS
HAVE ALWAYS
APPRECIATED QUALITY,
VALUE, TRADITION,
SELECTION AND SERVICE.
M
illions of American service men and women
fought in two World Wars, Korea, Vietnam,
the Persian Gulf, the current conflicts in
Iraq and Afghanistan, and many others. Yet today,
the remains of some of these brave men and
women sit unclaimed and forgotten on the shelves
of funeral homes, hospitals, prisons, crematories
and other facilities.
Introduced in 2007,
the Missing in
America Project was
created to locate,
identify and inter the
unclaimed cremated
remains of American
veterans through the
joint efforts of
private, state and
federal organizations.
The Virginia Department of Veterans Services
invites all Virginia funeral homes, hospitals,
prisons, crematories and other facilities holding
unclaimed cremains to join the Virginia Military
Funeral Honors for Unclaimed Veterans' Cremains
Program in support of the Missing in America
Project.
To participate, provide the names of any
unclaimed service cremains, along with the service
number, social security number, date of birth, and
any other information about the person to the
Virginia Department of Veterans Services, Albert G.
Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery at 5210
Milners Road in Suffolk, Virginia 23434.
Volunteers from the Department of Veterans
Services can be provided to help assemble your list
of unclaimed cremains if necessary. Please help
give our forgotten veterans the honor, dignity,
respect and remembrance they deserve. For

Professional Futures
Dear VFDA Member,
T
he Virginia Funeral Directors Association
(VFDA) is asking you to contribute to the
annual Professional Futures Fund. As you
know, this dedicated fund is used solely for
the purpose of advocacy and lobbying for our
profession on the state and national levels. VFDA
is the voice for all Virginia funeral service practitioners.
Because of your past support, members of the
Virginia General Assembly consider the VFDA to be
the leading voice for our profession. This VFDA
leadership role for our industry has been built over
many years through the efforts of our dedicated
team of Bud Oakey, David Anderson and Josh Myers
working under the direction of our legislative
committee. The legislative committee seeks your
questions and advice on all issues and with legal
and professional guidance from our lobbying team,
setting aside personal agendas to do what is best for
the funeral service.
The VFDA, in conjunction with other key
stakeholders, successfully worked during the 2009

General Assembly session to defeat HB 1909,
regarding designation of persons authorized to
make funeral and burial decisions. VFDA was
also successful in passing HB 2258, concerning
immunity from liability for routine organ and
tissue donation.
Our state lobbying and advocacy efforts also
extend to issues that come before the Virginia
Board of Funeral Directors & Embalmers where
our team represents the interests of VFDA
members in matters ranging from licensing to
continuing education.
On the national level, VFDA works closely with
the National Funeral Directors Association in
lobbying Congress for legislation that is important
to the industry.
None of these efforts would be possible without
your financial support of our Professional Futures
Fund. Contributions to the Fund allow us to make
political contributions to state legislators with a
favorable voting record towards the profession and
retain qualified lobbyists to lead our government
relations efforts.
Many members tell us that advocacy for their
“professional future” is a key benefit of VFDA
membership. Please contribute to support the
funding of this program. It means your interests
are being protected. ■

WINCHESTER CASKET COMPANY
Rob-Win Press Celebrates 12 Years
of Exclusive Lena Liu Designs
R
ob-Win Press, a funeral industry
leader providing products to funeral
directors nationwide since 1938, is
celebrating 12 years of offering exclusive
funeral product designs by renowned artist
Lena Liu. Since 1997, Rob-Win Press has
featured over 25 Lena Liu designs on
register books and other printed funeral
products, including the Guardian Angel,
considered by many as the most beautiful
angel design in the industry.
Recipient of numerous awards, and
recognition at national shows and exhibits,
Lena Liu expresses her love for nature
through her paintbrush. With her broad
background in traditional Chinese art and
exposure to Western culture, she has
created a unique style by combining
modern printing techniques with classic
brushwork. There is an unusual quality of
peace and tranquility that radiates from her
work, which explains its popularity in the
funeral industry. Ms. Liu says, “I enjoy
nature. I enjoy light, air, color and every
beautiful thing around me. I look at something and paint what I feel about it, rather
than just the image it projects. I let what
touches my heart pass through my fingers.”
Rob-Win Press was the first company in
the funeral industry to introduce art from
a licensed artist when co-owner Edwin
Jarvis applied designs from Lena Liu in
1997 to the company's register books and
stationery products, including acknowledgment cards, prayer cards and service
folders. President Robin Cook adds, “Since
then, competitors have followed with other
well known artists, trying to imitate Lena
Liu's unique style, but she's still the best.
We are extremely proud to have exclusive
production and distribution rights to these
beautiful designs she has provided to us
during the past 12 years. We look forward
to working with Lena in the future creating
contemporary versions of these classic
designs. In addition, she will be helping us
use her existing work on complimentary
products to our books and cards.”
For information about Rob-Win's Lena Liu
products or other our other fine funeral
products call 800-327-0940, e-mail Selena at
