2015/16 Velvet Season
Conditions of Supply
When deer velvet is supplied to PGG Wrightson Deer Velvet (PGW) for sale.
These conditions apply to any Supplier and PGW
to regulate transactions where a Supplier enters
deer velvet for sale at any PGW Deer Velvet Sale.
1. The Supplier warrants that it has full and
unencumbered title to velvet supplied and
indemnifies PGW against any loss occasioned
by a breach of this clause.
2. PGW reserves the right to reject any velvet
supplied if it deems it to be unacceptable
for sale. PGW's decision as to rejection shall
be final. Accordingly PGW's decision as to
the grading of the velvet is also final and not
reviewable by the Supplier.
3. The weight of the velvet as entered on an
Advice Note is approximate only and actual
weight will be as graded at a PGW Deer Velvet
Grading Centre.
4. The Supplier may not withdraw any velvet
from sale once it is accepted by PGW, with
acceptance occurring upon the receipt by the
Supplier of an Advice Note from PGW.
5. Upon acceptance the risk of insuring the
velvet shall become PGW's, who will keep it
insured (until sale or return under clause 10) to
its full insurable value against loss or damage
from any cause whatsoever.
6. Property in the velvet remains in the Supplier
until the velvet is sold and paid for by a
Purchaser. If velvet is not sold the Supplier
shall accept velvet of the equivalent weight
and quality to that originally supplied. PGW
has no liability to the Supplier nor to any
other party for any losses or claims, including
but not limited to if the velvet is not sold;
for failure to offer the velvet in the sale
indicated; for a default by the Purchaser;
claims for personal injury; damage to property;
consequential loss (including loss of profits) or
for any loss occasioned due to a lower price
being obtained on any resale.
7. The Supplier acknowledges that upon grading
the velvet becomes mixed with other velvet
from other Suppliers and is not able to be
separately identified and accordingly the
Supplier’s rights in relation to it are in respect
to any proceeds of sale instead of the velvet
itself.
8. The Supplier gives authority to PGW to sell its
velvet on the Supplier’s behalf in the manner
and for the price deemed appropriate by PGW.
Payment of the proceeds of sale shall be made
to the Supplier within 10 business days of
grading but subject to receipt of the purchase
price from the Purchaser and after deduction
of commission and customary or statutory
charges.
9. The Supplier shall pay to PGW its normal
charges with respect to the sale of velvet from
time to time as advised by PGW. PGW reserves
the right from time to time to vary its charges
and such variations shall be binding on the
Supplier. Without limitation, PGW charges
will include freight costs to PGW, insurance
costs, grading of velvet to Deer Industry New
Zealand guidelines, offering velvet for sale and
the storage of velvet.
10. Any velvet unsold by the end of the PGW
season in any year shall be removed by the
Supplier at its cost including but not limited to
freight costs and insurance costs. In the event
that the Supplier shall not have removed such
unsold velvet by the end of the PGW season,
the Supplier shall upon demand reimburse
PGW all costs of storage at normal commercial
rates and insurance costs plus GST from such
time until such velvet is removed by the
Supplier. Upon return to or collection of the
velvet by the Supplier, risk shall forthwith
revert to the Supplier.
11. If a Supplier shall choose to enter PGW's
premises it shall do so at its own risk and PGW
shall not be in any way liable or responsible for
any accident whatsoever occurring.
12. PGW’s terms of trade for monthly trade
accounts located on PGW’s website also apply
to the extent deemed by PGW.

Velvet Season
A secure, stable future is our aim
Welcome all to the start of the new velvet season. Our sincere
thanks to all who have supplied and purchased to and from
PGG Wrightson Velvet to date.
Last season we experienced a steady rise in prices that now puts
velvet production in a profitable and competitive position amongst
all other farming options. The share passion for growing velvet
amongst NZ producers has many looking for better ways to feed and
breed correct, rounded velvet that is strongly aligned to our markets.
So to maintain farmer profitability and buyer profitability we must
correctly manage our way forward using supply chain partners
such as PGG Wrightson and others to protect investments.

PGG Wrightson Ltd will not pay proceeds with a value of $5.00 or less by cheque. By setting up a direct credit, we can ensure your proceeds are paid to
you in a timely and trouble free manner, regardless of value. Setting this up is as easy as emailing us with your PGW account details and bank account
details to [email protected] – we’ll do the rest. PGW is committed to providing you with excellent service. If you require any further
information on our services, or if you have any queries or suggestions, please contact our Customer Service Team on 0800 36 77 44, e-mail enquiries@
pggwrightson.co.nz or contact your regional office.
During September I visited our customers in both China and Korea.
What I observed in China (which prefers our spiker, regrowth and
hard velvet grades) is an adjustment in prices due to its economic
slow-down and internal trading pressures. Since the GFC in 2008,
China has been a savour for NZ velvet in terms of cash flow and
competition, which should continue but perhaps at a slower
pace. One or two major players in China hold too much control
that presents a risk to all other stakeholders. There is however a
transitional shift in wealth amongst consumers that should present
opportunities for quality NZ velvet to be branded in the near future.
On the other side or across the water, South Korea is at an exciting
new phase that if managed well will assist our growth and stability.
Healthy Functional Food (HFF) product sales that give NZ velvet
brand recognition are increasing and creating competition for the
well-established Traditional Medicine market. Sth Korea has always
been our biggest end user, but in recent years has purchased NZ
velvet from China after processing. Now, with demand for branded
products increasing, upcoming import tax reductions and the NZ/Sth
Korea FTA in place, opportunities exist to trade directly for both frozen
and dried velvet. PGG Wrightson are working closely with several
innovative companies that want to tell our story and focus on quality
in both product and people.
Our weekly Payment Schedule (PS) of defined dates for
payments to farmers will continue after being well received last
year. Our aim is to have all graded for sale velvet (Friday cut-offs)
paid out in full within 10 business days. We will retain the flexible
option for larger suppliers with their Own Sale, enabling us to
work with the market and individual supplier’s requirements.
As a valued supplier we release regular market updates
throughout the season. If you wish to receive these please email
me at [email protected]
All the very best,
