AVANEX®
Unique Endophyte Technology
Bird and Insect Deterrent Grasses
AVANEX® unique endophyte technology has won the 2010/2011 Australasian DuPont
Innovation Award for Performance Materials, which recognises the commercialisation
of outstanding science and technology in Australasia.
Together with AgResearch, the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) and Grasslanz, we
have developed a breakthrough in bird deterrent grasses; AVANEX® unique endophyte
technology. This exciting innovation combines novel endophytes in turf-type grasses;
Jackal tall fescue and Colosseum perennial ryegrass.
The attributes of the novel endophytes serve to dramatically reduce bird and insect
populations, thereby potentially reducing bird strikes on aircraft, and can also be used
in non-airport situations such as sportsfields and golf courses that experience fouling
by ducks and geese as well as damage by insects.
The endophyte, a naturally occurring fungus, causes post-digestion feedback (PDF)
malaise in birds, greatly reducing feeding by grass feeding birds and flocking to grassy
areas. The alkaloids produced by the endophyte also reduces insect numbers on the
grass and as a result the area is less attractive to insect-feeding birds.
This internationally recognised technology is exclusive to PGG Wrightson Turf.
Major Findings
1. S hown to reduce insect populations which can potentially lead to lower numbers
of insect feeding birds
2. S hown to reduce numbers of grass feeding birds (Canada geese) through
confirmed learning avoidance behaviour or post digestion feedback (PDF) malaise
3. A
necdotal comments on reduced numbers of grass feeding animals (rabbits, mice
etc). Trials are on-going
4. Improved plant persistence leading to longer surviving grass areas
6
pggwrightsonturf.co.nz
AVANEX®
Unique Endophyte Technology
How AVANEX® unique endophyte technology works
– Novel endophytes produce high levels of the alkaloids ergovaline, loline and peramine
–These alkaloids contribute to lower insect populations through insect deterring
properties and are an environmental way to reduce the use of insecticides to
control many turf insects
– Ergovaline contributes to post digestion feedback (PDF) malaise of Canada geese
Where to use AVANEX® unique endophyte technology
• S
portsfields – for cleaner insect free playing surfaces and less excreted waste from
grass feeding birds
• Amenity areas – for cleaner playing surfaces
• Waterways and reservoirs – less birds with potentially less fouling
• Airfields – for less insects and grass feeding birds
Intellectual property protection
AR601 endophyte is protected by United States Patent Application No. 8101400. Harvesting / propagating, resowing, and/or onselling of AR601 may infringe this patent and may result in

Seed Treatment
Superstrike® grass seed treatment is a filmcote seed treatment
containing a combination of chemical additives specifically formulated
to enhance the establishment and performance of turf seed.
Features
• C
ontains systemic insecticide – registered for
protection against three of the major grass pests
(Grass Grub, Argentine Stem Weevil and Black
Beetle) during plant establishment
• Contains a contact fungicide – effective against
the common seedling ‘damping off’ diseases
Pythium and Fusarium
What are the benefits of Superstrike®?
•
Insect and disease protection ensures grass seedlings have a greater chance of establishment and survival.
•
Systemic activity of the insecticide provides plant protection for at least six weeks after sowing.
•
Promotes faster and more vigorous plant establishment.
•
Plants exhibit increased tiller growth and greater root mass.
•
Provides protection against bird theft of seed in broadcast sowings.
•
rovides environmental benefits as less chemical active ingredients are applied to the soil via seed treatment in
P
comparison to foliar chemical applications.
•
Not harmful to soil dwelling organisms e.g. earthworms.
•
Convenient to use and safe to handle.
What grasses benefit from Superstrike® treatment?
All grasses (including grasses with endophyte) respond positively to Superstrike® treatment. In the absence of
insect and disease pressure, responses with slower establishing grasses such as fescue and browntop are generally
the most spectacular.
Superstrike Grass protects grass seedlings against these pests:

Dispersible granule technology, each 1.5 mm particle breaks down to approximately
24,000 particles in 3- 5mm irrigation.
No mower pick up, no sudden release.
No movement to hollows or wash off as fertiliser goes in where it is applied.
Excellent summer formula, 90% very slow release Nitrogen from (MUtech-L™). 10% immediate Nitrogen from ammonium sulphate.
Uniform particle size, very consistent spreading.
General Information
Nutri DG 24-0-8 (90% very slow release) is formulated from longer chain Methylene Urea Nutri DG particles which
provide very slow release of 90% of the Nitrogen. This formula is therefore very suited to warm weather or long
summer conditions where very slow release characteristics are required. There is some initial plant availability and
this fertiliser is especially designed for areas requiring a complete fertiliser. The Nutri DG on contact with water
disperses the 1.5 mm particles with as little as 3-5 mm of rain or irrigation completely into the turf surface.
Application rates
Apply at 30-40 g/m² (300-400 kg/ha) every 8-10 weeks or as required. Not recommended for very nutrient deficient
areas. Apply to turf and follow with 3-5 mm of irrigation to thoroughly water-in immediately after application.

For suppression and long term control of Poa annua.
Growth regulation including a decrease in vertical height, enhanced colour
uniformity and turf quality.
Slow release Nitrogen as a Methylene Urea for longevity of 6 - 10 weeks feeding.
Small (1 mm) uniform particle size - for very consistent spreading.
Also contains Phosphorous, Potassium and Sulphur.
General Information
Paclo Pro® 31-1-6 is in a ready-to-apply formulation of slow release Nitrogen fertiliser and Paclobutrazol turf growth
regulator. The Paclobutrazol acts by suppressing the Poa annua (discolouration yellow to brown) allowing the
desirable species to grow through and around the stunted plants, thus achieving domination over a period of
time. In addition, the use of this product will reduce the vertical height of the desired species encouraging a tighter
growth habit and more even colour. Overseeding is recommended to hasten the conversion from Poa annua to the
preferred grasses.
Application Rates
Apply at 9.5-14 g/m2 (95-140 kg/ha) for a maximum of three applications per year. Apply to dry turf as an even
coverage. Water-in with at least 6 mm of water within 24 hours of application.
Note: For general applications use the higher rate indicated - use the lower rate when the percentage of
Poa annua is so high that the resultant yellowing and retardation would be too extensive to be acceptable.
Caution: Use only in spring and autumn when grasses are growing actively and do not apply to
grasses that may be stressed from heat, cold or lack of moisture. Do not apply more than two spring
applications and one autumn application. Do not scarify or top-dress greens while Poa annua is
undergoing growth regulation. Please read the other critical comments on the label very carefully
before using this product.

Excellent Nitrogen to Potassium ratio.
Competitively priced New Zealand supplied fertiliser.
Excellent choice for budget turf surfaces, sportsfields, school grounds and fairways.
Nitrogen source is from both Ammonium and Nitrate Nitrogen, ensuring delayed
availability.
1% Fe for immediate colour response.
General Information
PGW Sports Mix 17-2-17 plus 1% Iron is an economical way of applying Nitrogen fertiliser to broad-acre sports
turf. The two forms of Nitrogen in this product gives some delayed release of Nitrogen (though not a slow release)
and many customers report excellent early season results in bringing up nutrient levels after a wet and depleting
winter. The economical price of this high Nitrogen fertiliser means it has become the choice of many schools and
broad acre Turf Managers whose budgets restrict the use of more expensive slow release fertilisers. PGW Sports Mix
17-2-17 also contains 1% Iron which gives a colour response.
Application rates
Apply at 20-25 g/m² (200-250 kg/ha) every 6-8 weeks or as required.

Benefits
•

Stimulates enzymes involved in Nitrogen, Phosphate and Iron nutrition.
Improves leaf quality.
Stimulates root growth.
Improved nutrient and moisture uptake from the soil.
Improved tolerance to stress.
General Information
A high performance liquid seaweed filtrate which provides phyto-hormones and vitamins for healthy grass growth,
colour and increased environmental stress tolerance levels. When roots need nutrients, phyto-hormones signal
enzymes to transport nutrients from the leaves to the roots, but they are captured at the growing point located at
the base of the leaves; the area of most demand for energy and nutrients. This is the reason roots die back during
the summer. The extra hormones in Goëmar® Calibra activate more enzymes that enable nutrients to get past this
leaf factory and down to the roots, producing a higher root mass during the summer which leads to healthier turf.
Application rates
Greens and turf areas: 0.5 to 3 L/ha.
Bowling greens: 250 - 300 ml per full green.

Trichoflow Turf
Trichoderma are saprophytic fungi which feed on organic matter material excreted by the roots of plants.
Trichoflow Turf will establish itself in growing media and colonise the root zones of plants; this provides an
environment for the plant which is less conducive to disease. Trichoflow assists with disease protection from
Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and Pythium species.
Mixing Instructions
Ensure the tank is well cleaned and free from chemicals and chlorides. Strain the Trichoflow with a household
strainer into the tank. Add the required amount of Aminogro® Plus (more information on this product on page 79)
and possibly Hydretain® (root zone moisture management product, see page 100). Remove fine strainers from the
nozzles and agitate the mixture well during spraying.
Application Rates
Apply 5 kg/ha and “drench in” immediately afterwards with sufficient water to make the product move into the
thatch.
Thereafter apply 2.5 kg/ha monthly.
Note: If harsh chemicals are used, the rate of 5 kg/ha may need to be repeated to build up sufficient numbers of
beneficial fungi spores again. Excellent when applied with Arcdian, AminoGro® Plus, Hydretain and Sand-Aid® or
any microbe safe wetting agent.

Digester
A product to activate primary soil decomposers
•
•
•
•
This product activates primary de-composers – this product is not a living bacteria
Improves organic matter recycling
Remedies compaction
Repairs soil aggregate
The complete composting of organic matter over the winter months is critical
for maintaining a healthy soil structure and strong spring growth. Digester
uses Biostart’s signal molecule technology to activate the indigenous primary
decomposers. These beneficial fungi and bacteria are collectively responsible for
converting dead root and grass clippings into healthy humus. Digester aids in
maintaining biological activity over the cooler winter months. Digester can be used
to remedy compaction and repair soil aggregate.
Application Rates
3 L/ha.
(For applications over the growing season use Mycorrcin). Some over-lapping for
a few months in autumn/spring using both products will give benefits of each
product and in such a case the use rate would be 3 L/ha of each mixed with water.
Pack Size: 20 litres
Mycorrcin
A product to activate Mycorrhizal fungi
•
•
•
•
•
T his product stimulates dormant Mycorrhizal bacteria in the soil using signal
molecules – this product is not living Mycorrhizal bacteria so does not need to
be refrigerated
In doing so it creates fungi “channels” to the root hairs which assists in directing
nutrients and moisture to the roots
The plant then grows microscopic root hairs where the “channels” have been
This greatly assists in root growth and development
Plant is much more able to handle stress, and is therefore healthier
Mycorrcin is a bacteria activator (rather than living Mycorrhizal bacteria) and is
best applied during the true growing season, September to April. It remedies
compaction, and assists in the soil’s water holding capacity, as well as enhancing
root development thereby increasing the up-take of both moisture and nutrients
into the plant . It can be tank mixed with most common fungicides, pesticides and
foliar fertilisers (Mycorrhizal is Latin for root fungi).
Application Rates
5 L/ha.
(For applications over winter use Digester). Some over-lapping for a few months in
autumn/spring using both products will give benefits of each product and in such a
case the use rate would be 3 L/ha of each mixed with water.

• M
ade up of two components, a wetting agent for spreading water evenly and a
second component to hold water
• Retains additional moisture down in the root zone away from evaporation
• Retains up to 5 times the normal amount of moisture held in the root zone at field
capacity (research data provided by Sportsturf Technology)
• Is 100% active ingredient and does not contain fillers

General Information
Its unique bi-active formula provides both outstanding penetration along with superior moisture retention.
Bi-Agra™’s strength is its ability to retain additional moisture in normally low water-retaining root zones. Unlike
polyacrylamides which hold water tightly, Bi-Agra™ holds moisture in the soil, yet allows water availability through
the normal process of osmosis as required by the roots. Bi-Agra™ should be used as a curative treatment on
severely water repellent soils to assist with the rewetting of dry root zones.

• Boom sprayed or through injector pumps into irrigation
• Economical broad acre soil water penetrant for improved water movement
Suitable for
Enhanced water penetration in:
Benefits
•
•
•
•
Economical option for surfactant control on fairways and broad acre parks.

OARS®
Organic Acid Removal System
• 3 0 day hydrating surfactant which is a non-toxic, non-ionic,
non-flammable, non-corrosive and biodegradable formulation
of surfactants and organic solvents.
Suitable for
Benefits
•
•
•
•
•
Uniform movement of water into and through the soil matrix.
Removes the cause of water repellency.
30 day deep hydrating surfactant – for correct water movement.
Will not burn.
The corrective approach to water repellency rather than a temporary fix from normal soil surfactants.
General Information
OARS® is a solution that works. Before the discovery of OARS®, the only way to manage LDS and water repellency
was to mask them with hydrating surfactants and/or mechanical treatments. Aerification only affects about 5% of
the surface area at one time. OARS® affects 100% of the surface area per application and has demonstrated that it
removes as much as 27.5% of water repellent organic acids after just two applications. Because turf is aggressive
and is continually growing, the build up of organic acids is also continual, therefore ongoing treatments are
necessary.
OARS® is the only product currently available which removes the cause of water repellency. This results in a drier
firmer playing surface, so turf managed with OARS® will have fewer ball marks, less mower tracks and a premium
surface.
Application Rates
20 L/ha monthly or 10 L/ha combined with a full surfactant programme (monthly) - in 800 L of water/ha.

Application Rates
Dilute Stadia ER 1:1 with water and Stadia ER Sprayable at 1:2 with water
Apply Stadia ER with an airless spray unit using a 9 “Thou” tip, transfer marker paint pads or a broom, and the Stadia
ER Sprayable with your basic spray marker.
To remove, dilute the ER remover product at between 1:20 to 1:50 with water, and apply through a spray pack (such
as a solo pump up sprayer). Wait a few minutes and remove line/logo with a high pressure hose and a Fish Mouth
nozzle. Remove line or logo in sections at a time.
For best results, spray the area to be marked with Logo Primer product (page 118), allowing it to dry, before
applying the marking to the turf. This will assist in preventing “shadowing” after removing line/logo.
Dilute the ER with Malt Extract 50% (page 119) product rather than water. This also assists in removal of line/logo.
Apply as close to the time of event, and remove as soon as possible after the event.

Simple componentry, easy clean filters, snap lock nozzles and hoses.
Spray fan to create line.
Forward marking discs to sharpen lines and define width.
Set wheels for “straightness” of line.
Further attachments such as the athletics attachment, spray wand, mini boom spray and side mount are also

Lightweight.
Simple, trouble free use by operator.
Lines are marked gently on the surface only.
Pneumatic wheels giving smooth operation.
Marker guide attached for following lines.
General Information
Using the practical design of the Line Transfer Marker, this machine has been developed to create narrow lines as
requested on bowling greens.
The greatest advantage in using this system is the huge amount of time saved by not having to remark as often as
the lines stay visible for weeks.
Application of line marking liquid
The Bowls Marker uses Duramark line marking liquid (at a ratio of 1:1 with water) or Stadia line marking liquid (at
a ratio of 1:2 with water). Fill the receptacle with the mix and mark away. Marking the lines twice makes the lines
stand out more. Leftover product can be tipped from the tank with ease.

Line Marking
Products to assist with erasable marking
Athletics Attachment
The athletics attachment is a great asset to those who have more
than one single line to mark. Especially made for the athletic track and
field marking, it allows you to mark three lines at the one time.
The cut off system provides you with the option to have all or
just one of the lines marking. This accessory is a great time saver
especially when you can minimise the time and effort needed to
mark an athletic field by three times. It is only available for use with
the Professional Line Marker.
Forward Marking Discs
Forward marking discs offer an alternative marking position with extended
visibility. These discs offer extra protection against wind spray drift and ensure
a more defined edge to the line. This accessory is supplied purely to suit the
preference of the operator and can be attached to both the Professional Line
Marker and the Mini Line Marker.
Note: Forward marking discs are supplied with the Professional Line Marker.
Logo Primer
This product is applied to turf before the coloured graphic is applied. It greatly
assists in the removal of the line/logo after the event. It is green in colour for a
more realistic grass green finish once the line/logo is removed. 50 litres of mix
is made up at a time.
Suggestion: Mix - 48 litres of water
- 1 litre Logo Primer
- 1 litre Malt Extract 50%
The malt helps stop the product from going extra hard on the grass leaf.
The logo should be “dotted” first and then the primer applied. The primer will
take about 10-15 minutes to dry.
The line/logo (coloured) can then be applied and completed.

Line Marking
Equipment
Malt Extract 50%
Ready mixed with water for ease of use.
To reduce shadowing (with removed logo) and to improve the removal of line/logos,
substitute water with Malt Extract 50% to dilute the Stadia ER colours.
Apply using line marker, spray wand or boom sprayer.
Can be applied as a growth enhancement, and for the control of plant nematodes in
sandy soil. If it is to be used for this, apply 120 L in 600 L of water per hectare.
Pack Size: 15 litres
Spray Wand
The spray wand is a terrific accessory for logo marking, greening of turf and for
the application of fertilisers to specific areas. The wand is equipped with 5 metres
of tubing and is activated by flicking a switch. It is easy to handle and acts almost
like a paint brush, allowing you to mark the turf exactly where you need to. You
can adjust the spray from a wide fan to a jet stream according to the application
required. Extra tubing can be supplied if required. The attachment is suitable for
both the Mini Line Marker and the Professional Line Marker.
Stadia ER Patented
Removal System
A solution mixed with water and sprayed onto lines/logos which have been applied
with Stadia ER colours. It is left for a few minutes, then removed using a high
pressure hose and fish mouthed nozzle.
Mix up the solution at 1:20 to 1:50 and apply with a spray pack such as a solo pump
up sprayer.
The removal system works best when applied in sections at a time. Also it should
be carried out as soon as practical after the event for maximum results. Try to avoid
“pooling” of the removed solution as this may cause sand contamination.

Evergreen Turf Covers
– By Covermaster
Germination covers for speeding up seed establishment
and grass growth
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Covers for golf, sportsfields, newly sown turf and for bringing turf out of winter dormancy earlier
Earlier spring growth in cooler climates
Holds moisture and retains heat making the soil much warmer than outside the cover
Holds moisture in and prevents ground drying out and therefore requires less water to germinate grass
Noticeably quicker to germinate grass in cool temperatures
Protects seed from high winds, rain wash out and birds
The cover can be cut to fit an area and the edges won’t fray after
cutting (simply tuck under a pin)
• Lightweight and easy to handle, and won’t smother grass
Covermaster’s Evergreen Turf Covers are remarkable in their cool
season performance in germinating grass over winter, making
existing grass grow out of dormancy (over winter) and for making
germination times noticeably faster in spring and autumn.
Evergreen covers also hold valuable moisture in the soil in dry
periods saving irrigation water and preventing soil drying out and
damaging fledgling seedlings.
Being permeable the covers allow air, light and moisture penetration
which makes it ideal for new seedlings and over sowing . This “green
house” effect warms the soil resulting in earlier root growth and
earlier seasonal growth in fringe seasons.
The product is made of a permeable woven, translucent
polyethylene with a patented lace coating. Evergreen Turf Covers are rot resistant and have a 3 or 7 year warranty
(depending on the type of cover purchased).
Available Sizes
Evergreen Radiant Covers 21.95 m x 27.43 m = 602 m²
Evergreen Radiant Covers 25.60 m x 33.53 m = 858 m²
Radiant covers have a high efficiency factor and convert approximately 15% more heat under the cover.
