Gary Lewis : Superintendent/President
Welcome to Shasta College and our long and rich tradition in
Intercollegiate Athletics. We are proud of the role we play in the
development and success of our student athletes. Shasta College
is committed to the values of the California Community College
Commission on Athletics: Student Health and Welfare, Academic
Success, Ethical Conduct, Recognition of Excellence, Gender Equity
and Non-Discrimination.
I cherish my 33 years at Shasta College. For 21 years, I was the
college’s Track & Field, Cross Country coach, and an instructor
in the Business Department. I also spent six years in athletic
administration. During this time I gained great respect for the character, commitment and
success of our student athletes. Their achievements were made possible by our dedicated
and highly qualified coaches, faculty, staff and administration. All of us at Shasta College
recognize and appreciate the tremendous community support of our athletic program.
Good luck to our athletes, teams, coaches and support staff. Thank you to all who have
contributed to the quality and success of Shasta College Athletics!

Shasta College is very proud of our fields and
grounds staff. These dedicated professionals are
responsible for keeping all of our athletic fields
in top shape. With the challenges of extreme
heat and cold winters, the job of preparing the
fields for competition is a very demanding one.

Outlook 2009
Aaron Junta - Head Coach
Head Coach Aaron Junta is entering his third
year as the cross country and track and field
coach for the Knights. Aaron has acquired
a reputation of building up track and field
and cross country programs in Southern
California. Aaron came from East Los
Angeles College where he spent 2 years as the
head track and field and cross country coach.
As a part-time coach, Junta led a successful
cross country program that finished second in
the state and had Oscar Ogwaro capture the
individual state title. The men’s track program
has finished fourth in Southern California
the last two years and finished 5th in state in
2007. Aaron also served as the head coach of
Irvine Valley College in Irvine from 19992002 before becoming an assistant coach at
Santiago Canyon College in Orange for two
seasons. Junta’s men’s team at Irvine Valley
college finished 15th at the state meet. Junta
also helped build the Santiago Canyon’s Men’s
cross country team into a 3rd place finish
at the state championships. Junta’s goals
include building numbers at Shasta and then
focusing on becoming an annual Northern
California contender. A graduate of Long
Beach State where he was an All-Big West
Conference long-jumper and triple-jumper,
Coach Junta earned his Bachelors of Arts
and Masters of Science in Kinesiology. In
addition to his education, Coach Junta has his
level II certification through USA Track and
Field in the Endurance, Jumps, Sprints, and
Hurdle Events. Coach Junta is also a certified
Strength and Conditioning Coach through
the National Strength and Conditioning
Association. In his spare time Aaron enjoys
being active, including participating in
activities such as hiking, skiing, and water
sports.
Women:
Shasta Women will hope to build upon the
success that last year’s squat that finished
20th in State. They will be favored to repeat
as GVC champions and will be looking for
another top 20 finish at the state meet.
Shasta will be lead by a pair of freshmen in
Jerri Spence and Brianna Winstead. Jerri and
Brianna hope to lead the lady knights much
like they did last year in helping runners
lead enterprise high school to a sectional
championship last year. Jerri who broke 19
minutes for 3 miles in high school should be
favored to win the Golden Valley Conference
and should be one of the top runners in
northern California. Brianna, who ran in the
high 19’s last year, should also be one of the
top runners in the GVC.
The Knights should also get help from last
years lone returner, Becca Lightfoot who
finished 6th in the GVC last year. Becca
should be improved with a year of college
runner under her belt. Newcomer Brooke
Laughlin, also from Enterprise high school
should also be one of Shasta’s top runners.
Also adding deph to the squat is former West
Valley runner Cessna Darting and Abigail
Zufiel.
Men:
The men’s team will be trying for a
breakthrough year. The men’s team has not
won a league title or qualified for the state
meet since 2002. The goal of this year’s team
is to end that draught.
The team’s top runner this year will be
freshman Sebastian O’berin. Sebastian,
from Ukiah HS was a second team Redwood
empire performer last year by placing 15th
in the North Coast division Championships.
He should contend for an individual GVC
championship.
The team lacks another front runner the
caliber of O’ bergin. However, there is a lot
of depth behind him. Kyle Oilar, who was
10th in conference last year and 5th in the
10K at the should be improved with a year of
experience. Dononvan Lackey who was 7th
state last year in the 800M should help the
team in his first year of cross country. Erik
Main, a first year runner from foothill shows a
lot of talent and should help the knights.
Shasta has a couple of Central Valley
graduates in Joseph Knighten and Mitch
Griggs who were both second team all NAL
selections, as well as Chinese import Chao
Chen who should round out the top seven.

Football
Outlook 2009
The 2009 Knights look to picking up right
from where they finished last season, which
was the exciting and incredible come from
behind victory versus Monterey Peninsula
College in the season ending Bulldog Bowl
game at San Mateo College. The 2008
Knights finished the regular season with an
overall record of 8-2 which included a 5-0
Bay Valley Conference record, which gave the
Knights the out-right B.V.C championship.
With the B.V.C championship in there
possession, the Knights traveled to San Mateo
to play the Coast Conference champions
Monterey Peninsula college in the Bulldog
Bowl. The victory over Monterey Peninsula
gave the Knights and overall record of 9-2,
and the Southern Division Championship.
The Bulldog bowl victory also snapped
the National leading 13-game win streak
held by Monterey. The 2008 conference
championship was the first conference
championship in 21 years for the Knights
(1987). The 2009 Knights look forward
Football - Outlook 2009
to the challenge of defending their B.V.C
championship, and keeping the title in their
trophy case for many years to come.
As the Knights look forward to keeping the
B.V.C championship, they do so knowing
that the 2009 team will be much different
from the 2008 team. With the wealth of the
2008 members gone this year the program
will be counting on a promising group of
fast and talented freshman to help secure the
title. With a tough non-conference schedule
which includes Laney College, Mendocino
College, Sacramento City College, College of
the Siskiyous, and Feather River College, the
Knights will have to get off to a solid start
and come out of the non-conference games
health. Coach Craig Thompson feels that this
team has the right balance of sophomore
leadership on both sides of the ball and the
right addition of talented freshman to make a
run at the 2009 B.V.C title.
Offense:
On the offensive side of the ball the Knight’s
are young with an abundance of freshman
expected to make great contributions.
The Knights run a multi-pro style offense
emphasizing multiple formations and personal
packages. Using multiple formations and
personal packages the offense strives to
maintain a balanced run to pass attack with
an emphasis on moving the chains and
controlling the clock. The offense is a young
squad this year and only returns two starters
from last years team (TE, Ezri Topete &
OL, Jacob Stout). In addition the offense
will benefit from multi-position player Cole
Johnston (RB, QB, WR) and TE Saxon
Schultz, who both say considerable action last
season.
Offensive Line:
Shoring up the front for the Knight’s
will be Jacob Stout (SO, Anderson H.S.),
Matt Cervenka (SO, Foothill H.S.), Keoni
Funtanilla (SO,Kailua H.S., HI ), Taouli Ma’ae
(FR, Castle H.S., HI), and Michael Tevaga
(FR,Waipahu H.S., HI). Nathan Topete (FR,
Redding) will also be called into action. Erik
Cook, Kyle McMahon, Christain Ramero, and
Wesley Wadsworth all provide solid back up.
Tight Ends:
The TE’s position supplies the offense with
the most experience from the 2008 team.
Returning as the 2008 back up’s who saw
plenty of action last year are, Ezri Topete (SO,
Enterprise H.S.), and Saxon Schultz (SO, Del
Norte H.S., Crescent City, CA)
Running Backs:
With the departure of last years group of
great backs (Brandon Baldwin and Ryan
Krueger), the Knights will be calling upon a
stable full of capable running backs. Leading
the way will be sophomores Cole Johnston
(Foothill H.S.) and Trevor Rook (SO, Del
Norte H.S., Crescent City, CA). The incoming
freshmen are led by Manuel Barragan (FR,
Yreka H.S.), George Sannadan (FR, Red Bluff
H.S.), Buzz Ward (FR, Foothill H.S.), Xavier
Robinson (FR, East Hall H.S., Gainesville,
GA), along with Shaughn Sanford, Kevin
Daughtery, Christopher Miller and Robert
Joseph all looking to provide valuable back
up.
Receivers:
With the season ending injury to Kyle
Johnston (Foothill H.S.) the offense will
be looking at an all freshmen receiver core.
Leading the group will be Mark Brooks
(Klamath Union H.S., Klamath Falls, OR),
Ronny Soulliere (Red Bluff H.S.), Ryan
Enyeart (Enterprise H.S.), Brian Brown
(Anderson H.S.), Emerald Guillet (Southside
H.S., Fort Wayne, IN). Also providing depth
to the receiver position are; Jared Holloway,
Matthew Cornish, Brian Johnson, Sam Diskin
and Keith Martz.
Quarterbacks:
Freshman Matthew Summers-Johnson will be
the starter in most of the Knights offensive
packages, but look for Cole Johnston to be
taking snaps at the quarterback position.
Cole will be the quarterback for several of
the offensive packages the Knights plan to
implement this season.
Defense:
The Knights will be running a base 3-4
scheme and kick into a 4-3 scheme based
upon the offensive situations. The defense
has a solid core of key personal returning
at all three levels of the defense (DL, LB,
DB). The defense will be led by returning
BVC Defensive player of the year LB, Zach
Gibbins (SO, Anderson H.S), All-Conference
selection DL, Ben Hughes (SO, Grants
Pass H.S., Grants Pass, OR), and honorable
6
mention DB, Casey Robertson (SO, Foothill,
H.S).
Defensive Line:
Defensive line will be anchored by Ben
Hughes (Grants Pass H.S., Grant Pass, OR)
and returning starter Shane Corley (SO,
Foothill H.S.). Incoming players projected
to contribute are Todd Hambly (FR, Red
Bluff H.S.), Matt Anderson (FR, Anderson
H.S.), Andrew Landis (FR, West Valley H.S.),
Jacob Campbell (FR, Foothill H.S.), Ryan
Booth (FR, Foothill H.S), Erick Miller (FR,
Enterprise H.S) and Xavier Reynoso (FR,
Pioneer H.S., Redding)
Linebackers:
The linebackers are the strength of the
defensive unit for the 2009 season. Returning
defensive player of the year Zach Gibbins
looks to be the leader of the overall defensive
unit. Along side of Zach is a great freshman
prospect Chace Taylor (FR, Enterprise H.S.),
playing the outside linebacker positions are
Ryan Peterson (FR, Grants Pass H.S., Grants
Pass, OR) and Scott Gettings (SO, Reno
H.S., Reno, NV). Provide quality depth will
be Ryan Burks (FR, Enterprise H.S.),Trevor
Kuyper (FR, Central Valley H.S.), Mitch
McDevitt (FR, Del Norte H.S., Crescent City,
CA), Travis Buick (FR, University Prep H.S.),
Russell Murray (FR, Anderson H.S.) and
Adam Acosta (FR, Orland H.S.).
Defensive Backs:
After starting all eleven games last season at
strong safety Casey Robertson (SO, Foothill
H.S.) returns to guide a young secondary.
Handling the cornerback positions are
sophomore Tyron Hollister (Waipahu H.S.,
HI), and an outstanding freshman Matthew
Watson (West Valley H.S.). Sitting deep along
side Robertson at the free-safety position is
sophomore Austin Cantrell (Foothill H.S.).
Providing back up and competing for playing
time includes Jarod Frost (FR, Anderson
H.S.), Bradley Woolf (FR, Sequim H.S.,
Sequim, WA), Kody Hansen (FR, Foothill
H.S.), Andre Eddings (FR, David Douglas
H.S., Portland, OR), Tanner Kuyper (FR,
Central Valley H.S.), R.J. Reynolds (FR,
Oroville H.S.), Antone Currey (FR, Antioch,
CA)
Outlook (continued)

Jason Dell - Head Coach
Jason Dell is no stranger to our area’s local
soccer programs. With over a decade of
coaching experience within the recreation and
high school arena, Jason has helped develop
players’ abilities as well as championship
programs. He was responsible for the start
of the U-Prep School’s soccer program that
consisted of eight teams and one hundred
and forty rostered soccer athletes, which
equated to a quarter of the schools overall
enrollment. He believes the passion of the
game, community involvement and a strong
work ethic will be the foundation of a
successful Men’s Soccer Program at Shasta
College.
Coaches Vision for Men’s Soccer
The purpose of the long-term outlook
towards Shasta College men’s soccer program
has many facets, but is focused on the
development of a soccer program capable
of delivering the highest levels of player
satisfaction and value for the time and effort
its participants invest. Our program intends
to achieve these goals by providing the
best training available for our athletes. Our
program will incorporate current unfolding
philosophies of player development and
performance accountability. Some of the
program attributes will mirror existing soccer
training theory and psychology; others will
expand upon the personal views of the

Stuart Hayes has been
involved with the
game of soccer since
the early 70’s with
experience playing and
coaching at multiple
levels. He grew up playing in Madrid, Spain
before coming state side to attend college. He
played for UC San Diego and continued on
after his four years of playing as a coach for
the University as well as the NASL San Diego
Sockers. He obtained his USSF A License
in 1979 and is one of a handful coaches
in Northern California with such a strong
credential. After moving to Redding in the
80’s he has continued to coach for local high
school and CYSA teams. Stuart Hayes has the
reputation of building championship teams
with a strong focus on player development.
coaches. The program will adhere to a set
of training and development standards,
which, ultimately, will represent the overall
personality and reputation of the program.
An integral aspect of the program’s
development effort is accountability.
The process begins with instructional
methodology, and culminates with
independent assessment of individual player
growth and ability. It emphasizes player/
coach interaction. This interaction includes
communication, education, and feedback.
Shasta College Men’s Soccer does not believe

COACHES VISION (contunued)
mystery, reserved for the judgment of a
select few. Quality play is readily discernable
by well informed observers. Hence, one of
the schools major goals is to educate our
athletes in achieving a greater understanding
of the fundamentals of the game. The
more the athlete knows, the better they are
able to assess the quality of the services we
provide them. This understanding involves
comprehending the long-term vision
associated with the development of premier
level competitive team.
We are excited to see our athletes grow their
passion with the game of soccer. Over all,
Shasta College Men’s Soccer is dedicated in
developing the WHOLE person-the moral,
social and academic dimensions as well as
physical development. Through participation
in the Shasta College Men’s Soccer Program
students may develop life-long skills and
positive values. These values include
leadership, healthful living habits, selfdiscipline, integrity, teamwork and respect.
Coming together is a beginning, Keeping together is
progress, Working together is success!

After graduating in 1981, she attended
Fresno State, where she participated in
intramural, coed soccer. Jody graduated from
Fresno State, taught in Japan, traveled, and
married. She is married to Randy Nelson,
who is an attorney. They have three children,
Kiely (18), Mitchell (16) and Christopher (14).
After marrying, having children and moving
to Redding in 1995, Jody re-entered the soccer
world. She joined the Redding Adult Soccer
League and was a board member for about
5 years. During this time she also coached
her daughter’s soccer team and continued
with many of the same girls for about six
years, the last three were at the Division III
level. She hopes to use her contacts in the
adult and youth soccer leagues to encourage
community involvement in the Shasta College
team. She wants to develop a program
students will want to participate in, knowing
that if they work hard they will be part of a
competitive team and have lasting friendships
and memories.

2009 Season Outlook
The 2009 Shasta College Women’s Soccer team is one with tons of potential. Of course, that
includes the strong returning players Jessie Bailey, Hannah Brown, Megan Colburn, Katherine
Hunting and Breah Porter. These girls are wonderful team leaders and provide a strong core
both on and off the field. Although we are still moving people around a bit, we have found
a solid defensive group in Kristina Mendenhall, Veronica Stouffer, Aubri Kemp and Megan
Zertuche. Erin Graham will also provide steady midfield support with her ball control and
positive attitude. Included in the mix is Heather Lankford , who is tenacious with a powerful
shot. In addition, Tori Hughes, has endless endurance and controls the ball well in the middle.
Lori Garcia’s speed will also help our outside play. Also, we have Carina Noah and Jessie Laux.
Both are somewhat new to the game, but their enthusiasm and desire to learn help to create a
hardworking, positive atmosphere. Our goalies, Allie Anderson and Hanna Emmen, are both
incredibly talented and will share goalkeeping duties, as well as see time on the field. The most
telling sign of the things to come is the way the 17 girls have come together as a team after just
one week of practice. It is a great group of girls and they will be exciting to watch as the season
progresses.

Volleyball Outlook 2009
Expectations for the Knights Volleyball Team are High.
Returning for the team are ’08 All-Conference
players outside hitter Sarah Scott and middle
Lauren Swetland. Sarah led the team in
kills in ’08 and Lauren was the team and
state leader in solo blocks. Danielle Nance,
another All-Conference middle from ’07,
also returns to the team after medically redshirting last season. Danielle will transition
from the middle to the right side, where her
blocking, hitting, and back-up setting will
be a definite asset to the team. 2008 GVC
Honorable Mention middle, Kristen Marold,
will be a blocking and attacking force along
with her teammates. Passing and defensive
specialists, Alisha Thompson and Missy
Copeland, will use their solid skills to give our
front row attackers the best opportunities on
17
offense. Alicia Brown returns in the setting
position to feed the ball to our monster front
row.
Incoming freshmen include setter/hitter
Jayme King. Initially slated as a setter, Jayme
has made an impression as a hitter as well,
so will split the job of setter with Alicia
so she can also contribute as a right side
hitter. Outside hitter Kaitlyn Goff comes
in with nice leaping and hitting ability and
is expected to fill the second outside hitting
position. Athleticism, a strong work ethic and
an eagerness to compete characterize setter
Marissa Westlake, right side Lacy Coleman,
middle Kirsten Allen, outside hitters Megan
Panza and Sarah Loogman.

Max Burch - Head Coach
Head coach Max is beginning his ninth
season as wrestling coach for the Knights.
He attended Oklahoma State University for
3 1/2 years, graduating from CSU Fresno in
1962. After receiving his BA degree he began
teaching at Madera Union High School in
1962 where he also began his coaching career
as an assistant wrestling coach. In 1964 Max
and his wife, Connie with their two sons,
Bryan and Mike, moved to Redding to accept
a teaching position at Shasta High School.
While at Shasta High he was instrumental in
initiating the first wrestling program at Shasta
High in 1965 where he served as Head Coach
throught the 1983 season. During those 18
years his teams won five Northern Section
CIF team championships. In 1981, Shasta
placed 5th in State as a team, the highest
place finish by any Northern Section team
to date. During his high school tenure, he
coached two State champions, one runner up
and two third place finishers. Seven wrestlers
during his tenure at Shasta High went on to
wrestle at Division I schools. In 2001, Shasta
College reinstated its wrestling program and
Coach Burch was picked to guide the Knights.
Since that time, the Knights’ wrestling team
has produced one State champion, nine All
Americans and twenty California State CC
place finishers. One of the greatest wrestling
moments for Coach Burch was the honor of
presenting The National Wrestling Hall of
Fame inductee, Greg Gibson, with his plaque
at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame
Banquet. Greg also attended Shasta College
where, from his defensive end position, he
crunched many opposing quarterbacks and
pinned many wrestlers under the guidance of
Coach Leon Donohue.

Outlook 2009
Dustin Reid led the team with the highest
place at the State Tournament with a
second place finish. Dustin is a California
Community College, All-American, and
finished the season with 15 pins. Reid will
wrestle up a weight class from last season at
174 lb.
Derek Ellis, also a returning California
Community College All-American, led the
team with 18 pins and placed fourth at the
California CC Wrestling Championship last
season. He will be wrestling at 141 or 133 lb.
weight class this season.
Todd Rucker is another returning veteran
from the 2008 team. Todd sustained a
season ending injury in the finals at the
Sacramento City College Tournament. He
has a 5-0 record when the injury occurred.
Todd has the ability to place high at the State
Tournament.
Tim Navarrete, a state high school placer
from Shasta High, had the highest winning
percentage of the Knights last season with
an 11-1 record, when he, too, was lost for the
season with an injury. Tim has worked hard
on his rehabilitation. He has the skills and
ability to place high in the State this season.
