Marketplace ups and downs creates opportunities
By Mike Jordan
Jim Nesseth, owner of EXTended
Ag Services in Lakefield, knows a
lot about the farm economy and
is the go-to guy when it comes
to preplanning for many area
farmers. Nesseth is a former
Jackson
County
agricultural
educator and started his own
business just four years ago as a
service to farmers, providing them
with information on crop inputs
with emphasis on soil fertility —
what their soils may need or not
need to raise profitable crops as far
as nutrients are concerned. These
nutrients can be supplied by the
natural mineralization of organic
matter, credits from other crops
and supplemented by manure or
commercial fertilizer.
“Farmers contract or purchase
seed and fertilizer as well as other
inputs in the fall to, number one,
guarantee supply,” Nesseth said,
“and hopefully lock in a price that
is cheaper than anticipated in the
spring, especially with fertilizer.”
Seed companies will offer cash
discounts, he said, but generally
have a set price; however,
producers are wondering about
price reduction if corn and
soybean prices remain low.
“Inputs like fertilizer generally
appreciate in the spring, but for
the last couple years we’ve seen
inputs increase steadily and even
as often as monthly,” he said.
“Everyone knew that the recordhigh commodity prices and, along
with that, input costs wouldn’t go
up forever, but timing is everything
and if you are lucky enough to
Jim Nesseth
pick the right time to buy and sell
you end up looking pretty smart.
Nobody knows when the top or sometimes you can guess right.”
In addition to fertilizer and
bottom is going to happen, but
seed, other input costs include
herbicide, insecticides, fuel and
crop insurance.
“Fertilizer is the big one,
however,” Nesseth said. “It is
petroleum/crude oil-based and
the relationship between those
going up and fertilizer inputs
going up are pretty direct. The cost
of chemicals is petroleum based —
cost of fuel affects your application
costs too.”
Seed costs are at all-time highs,
he said, due largely to commodity
prices and other factors. Seed corn
lists for more than $300 per bag
and it only plants about two and
a half acres per bag. Land rents
have increased dramatically due
to higher commodity prices along
with crop insurance.
“What we have seen, in my
opinion, is agribusiness seeing
the opportunity corn and soybean

producers potentially had in terms
of profitability and they wanted
to make sure they received their
share also,” he said. “Landowners
obviously want and should receive
some increases too. The problem
is when all these increases occur,
there isn’t much left for the grain
producer. Inputs were considerably
less only a year or two ago and
then, all of the sudden, we had this
big run in commodity prices. Many
say it went higher than it should
have — blame it on weather, hedge
funds, outside speculators or the
profit takers that ran up the cost
of commodities making them
fundamentally higher than they
should have been.”
The point Nesseth said he wants
to make is that not all farmers
captured those record-high prices.
“A lot of them sold earlier,
which was a good move when
inputs were lower, as they took
some reasonable profits,” he said.
According to Nesseth, the
travesty is that some of them sold
before they locked in or could
lock in their input costs and then
those costs went up. So what they
thought was going to be profit
didn’t occur.
“Now commodity prices have
dropped by about half in value
and the input costs are still high,”
he said. “This scenario is what
many producers have feared and
the price squeeze we have all been
worried about. But now we are
seeing some of those inputs coming
down which is good news.”
Urea is one of them.
“Urea, a form of nitrogen, is
down $300 a ton from the high,”
he said. “I have been told that

phosphate and eventually potash
fertilizer will follow that trend. This
is a situation that has gotten some
of our farmers disgusted. They
have contracted for some fertilizer
and paid cash for the majority of
it. This is a year where some of our
farmers have paid for two years of
fertilizer in one year.”
Due to past market conditions,
he said, the fear was the price
would go even higher and there
might not be any fertilizer left to
buy if producers needed it.
“When we fear running out
of a major input needed for
crop production, it is not a good
situation and — looking back
— not a good time to react,” he
said. “It is an emotional reaction
and very easy to get caught up in.
I think the good news is a lot of
our guys contracted early enough
due to some good advice from
local fertilizer dealers, and if the
price comes back down it might
be in line with what they originally
contracted for. I think that is the
silver lining in all of this.”
Nesseth said a big part of
his business is testing soils to
determine soil fertility. He admits
it’s not a perfect science.
“There is variability within
soils,” he said. “We try to adopt
the most sensible practices in
soil sampling. We offer different
types of soil sampling from GPSgrid sampling, composite-zone
sampling, deep-nitrate sampling
and tailoring the grid or zone to
what ever size they feel is necessary
for an accurate sample. We provide
information to our producers that
best represents what their fertility
levels are — what they need to
spend for supplemental nutrients.
Our soil sampling has evolved into
utilizing the latest technologies,
mapping, crop histories, yield,
soil types and other information
— the more information the more
expensive the service.”
Information is important,
Nesseth said, but not all
information is useful and makes

producers money. In fact, he
added, the old saying “too much
information” sometimes applies
to soil testing.
“We start out at $2.50 per acre
for a 40-acre zone with a crop plan
that includes seed selection and
evaluating all inputs needed for
crop production,” he said. “We
like to estimate the probability of
positive return on investment on
each input.”
So what Nesseth tries to do is
offer the services his customers
want. And those services he
can provide his customers
are sound land-grant backed
advice on fertilizer and manure
recommendations.
And if a customer wants extra
information in terms of more
intensive or site-specific soil
information, Nesseth has the
software to make that prescription
for a field, one that can be given to a
fertilizer applicator for spreading.
“We are conservative in all our
recommendations; however, we do
not make a recommendation that
would limit yield,” Nesseth said.
“We believe in spending money
on plant protection only if it is
needed. Gathering information
from soil testing, scouting, crop
history, yields and other factors
drive our recommendations for
future crop decisions. We advise
our producers to only spend
money on inputs if they absolutely
need it and then if it is researched
based by unbiased people.
Nesseth touts the stability of
land-grant universities.
“My point with land-grant
universities is that they have been
in business for a long time,” he
said. “Generally their information
is right on. If you follow it, you
are going to be right 90 percent of
the time, and if you miss it that 10
percent, you won’t have missed it
by much. That is the base of our
recommendations. We wouldn’t
make a recommendation to a
customer that I wouldn’t make for
myself. We certainly are not perfect
in every recommendation, but I
feel confident in our conservative
approach for the long term.”
Over the summer, Nesseth’s
business sampled some 50,000
acres and this fall sampled another
30,000 acres of land for producers.
“It is a big job to process that
information and get it out to the
producers,” he said. “We have
an office in Lester, Iowa, with a
staff of three, plus our staff here
of five full-time employees. We
work hard. We charge for our
service and it is a high-volume,
low-margin business. We scout
corn and soybean fields and hire
college students and advanced
high school students to scout.
Some of the fields are walked eight
to 10 times. They look for evidence
of insects, disease, weeds and
evaluate stands.”
A large portion of Nesseth’s
business deals with livestock
producers

the manure value from those
operations and also staying in

Higher prices?
Adjust your
fiscal strategy
By Sharon M. Danes
Many of us are feeling the pinch
of higher food costs and higher
gasoline prices. The combination
of these two cost increases is causing people to think about financial
adjustment strategies that they and
other family members might do.
There are four types of financial adjustment strategies that you
might think about:
• Decrease money expenditures
• Increase or extend money income
• Increase household labor income
• Increase household management income
Some of these strategies directly involve money and others
substitute other resources such as
time and energy for money.
Decreasing money expenditures includes such activities such
as delaying purchases or using free
entertainment and parks. Increasing and extending money income
includes such things as working
additional hours or trading ser-

NOVEMBER 3, 2008
Marketplace
costs. It’s just incredible what has
happened this year. It has been a
benchmark year on how wild things
are on both the commodities and
input prices.”
What would Nesseth like to see
in a perfect world?
“Right now we would like to
see the commodity prices have
the up and down price swings,
but eventually go up to profitable
levels,” he said. “However, when
the markets are down, it does
provide an opportunity for our
livestock guys to cover some feed
costs and crop producers maybe
could collect some crop insurance
indemnities. Hopefully we will
see prices recover into spring.
Profitability is always driven by
yield and that is a main goal of ours.
We know that spending more on
inputs does not mean additional
yields or more profitability based
on farm management association
records. We do need to have
inputs go down and have some
price appreciation in grains. The
extremely high prices we have
experienced certainly has some
negative trade offs with these high
input costs, land rents and values.
He said he hopes things settle
down.
“There have been some high
rents offered to landowners in the
area and certainly makes people
edgy on what the future holds,”
he said. “Nobody wants to lose
ground. Still, sometimes you have
to be a little more aggressive than
you like. Things need to settle down
so every one can make a reasonable
profit and pay sensible rents. But it
still boils down to making sound
agronomic decisions.”
Nesseth looks for a challenging
year ahead, but feels confident
that if producers stick to the
basics in terms of input decisions
that will lower breakeven costs,
hopefully producers will have the
opportunity to price corn and
soybeans at profitable levels this
next year.
Continued from page 4
Minnesota Department of Natural
Resources. John Burgers and Andy
Nesseth are the two lead people
in that area for EXTended Ag
Services.
On the agronomy side, Nesseth
said producers have to look at all
inputs and ask themselves are
they going to get a return on those
inputs. They want to take a hard
look at research and where that
research occurred, he suggested.
“Don’t get taken in by unrealistic
claims by certain products because
if they sound too good to be true,
they probably are,” he said.
In these volatile times, Nesseth
suggests producers stick to the
basics. According to Nesseth,
producers used to be able to put
soybeans in at a cost of about $200
per acre and corn probably for
around $300-plus per acre.
“Now, with land costs, those
figures are between $400 and $450
an acre for soybeans and around
$600 or more per acre for corn,” he
said. “Basically they have doubled
and in some cases tripled in

vices with a friend or another family.
Increasing household labor income occurs when you substitute your skills, time, and energy for money. For example, repairing clothes rather than throwing them away. Or, canning and freezing food you
purchased in quantity for less, extending the dollars you have.
Increasing household management income is substituting time and skills to stretch your current income. You might plan spending carefully with a written spending plan. That plan works best if you include family members in its development. Or you might involve children in financial discussions to help
cut costs.
One of the things you can do with children is to discuss with them what they would give up so that the
money you have will last longer. This activity works best if everyone in the family indicates what it is they
will be giving up, including Mom and Dad. Make a list of what each member identified and place it on the
refrigerator for all to see. That way you can support each other in those plans to reduce costs.
You can obtain more cost-cutting and saving ideas through interactive assessments on www.ruralmn.
umn.edu and click on “Reduced Income.” You can discover your scores on all the types of financial strategies and see how you compare to others like you. You also can review “Ways to Save,” a compilation of
cost-saving measures used by others like you.

Uncertainty
making
planning even
more vital
By Steven Swenson
As farmers continue to harvest their 2008
crop, many if not most are already looking to
2009 and have begun planning for next year’s
crop. But with the economic downturn and
volatility of the grain markets that has been
taking place this makes the planning that
much more important.
Agriculture is widely thought to be one
of the safer sectors of the nation’s economy
in terms of the macroeconomic slowdown
underway. But that’s not to say it will be all

smooth sailing.
“2008 is going to come in as a
good year. We’ve had good yields
and good prices on the crop side,”
said Kent Vander Lugt, Senior
Vice President and Commercial/
Ag Loan Officer at First National
Bank in Pipestone. “But I’m a little
concerned about ’09 because
input costs have all gone up and
the break evens are higher than
what the market offers today with
these higher costs.”
Echoing this concern was
Ryan DeBates, Vice President of
Exchange State Bank in Luverne.
“It’s going to be real interesting
once this harvest is over, looking
into next year as to what is going to
happen,” said DeBates. “Land rents
across the board are beginning to
increase and the price of land to
buy is still going up.”
On how producers are doing
this year, DeBates said, “This year,
this harvest season we’re in right
now, a lot of the guys should be
okay if they were able to market
their grain early enough.”
Vander Lugt commented that
what is happening on the national
level has impacted the prices
right now but as a whole the ag
producers are financially strong at
this time, but that’s not to say that
wouldn’t change down the road.
“Looking
towards
2009,
producers are going to come off
a good year,” said Vander Lugt.
“But 2009 is going to be somewhat
difficult the way it looks. Volatility
is a concern for me right now.
Grain prices have dropped 50
percent from their high and inputs
haven’t come back in correlation to
that yet.”
As far as optimism about next
year, DeBates said it most likely
will be on a case by case basis.
“Each operation is different.
My feeling is that each operation
needs to look at what they have
and what they can control and
try to manage the rest of the risk
the best they can,” said DeBates.
“Really what this has come down
to is a big risk management deal
with trying to take advantage of
different crop insurance’s, forward
contracting some of their grain so
they can hopefully cover some of
their expenses.”
Vander Lugt noted that in these
times, working capital or cash
is important to get through next
year’s crop.
“I feel producers are kind of on
the fence right now just because
the revenue side has dropped so
much and they are trying to stall
hoping it will come down like
everything else,” Vander Lugt said.
“But we haven’t seen fertilizer, seed
and chemicals come down yet.”
Over the last couple months
the Minnesota Department of
Agriculture has held listening
meetings around the state to
hear Ag producers concerns on
a number of issues and one of
the more consistent themes was
economics.

Agriculture Commissioner Gene

Hugoson commented in his
October Commissioner’s Column
that given all that has happened in
the nation’s finance sector, it is no
surprise that we heard concerns
about the availability of credit.
“Minnesota’s
agricultural
lenders did not participate to the
same extent in the sort of risky
lending practices that led to our
current credit crisis,” Hugoson
said. “But that doesn’t mean those
lenders are immune from the effects
of the problems elsewhere.”
“The bottom line, noted
Hugoson, is that as farmers move
into the winter number-crunching,
there is great uncertainty and
unease.”
Vander Lugt said the volatility
in the market is making it tough on
making decisions. He noted that
we haven’t seen this volatility for a
long time and probably not since
the mid-1990’s when we had $5.00
corn.
“Decisions across the board
aren’t easy,” said Vander Lugt.
He said they see operating
loans going up even though we are
coming off a good year because it
is going to cost more. He figures
input costs on the corn side next
year are going to be between $600-

700 per acre and soybeans in the
$400-450 per acre range.
Looking out toward 2009,
Vander Lugt and DeBates both
voiced concern about the volatility
and other variables that can affect
farmers.
“It is still a big question mark,”
DeBates said. “There are still so
many variables out there that
are controlling this. If producers
have done a fair job of managing
their operation when prices were
so high and taking advantage of
some of that, hopefully they will
be able to weather the storm, so to
speak, that is coming through this
next year.”

Neels sisters “clean up”
with soap from goat milk
By Steven Swenson
All of the goats, except one, are The knowledge the girls
What do you do with a freezer Toggenburgs with a lone Nubian have gathered came in handy
full of bags containing frozen goat
milk? This was the question Tricia
Neels of rural Sherman had to
find an answer to and after some
searching on the Internet; she
came up with the plan to make
soap from the milk.
And thus, Neels Goats-N-Soaps
was born.
“I kept the milk from the time I
started milking my nanny,” Tricia
said. “I kept the milk in the freezer
and pretty soon the freezers were
getting full and dad told me I
needed to do something with the
milk.”
Tricia said she has had goats for
about six years and currently she
and sister Karisa have seven goats
having started with one nanny.
nanny included in the mix.
The girls, daughters of Ron and
Monica Neels, are both involved
with the raising, showing, working
with the goats and making the
soap.
Raising and showing goats
started out as a 4-H project for
Tricia who is a member of the
Springdell 4-H Club. “I then
took it to FFA,” she said. “I won a
proficiency award with my goats.”
The Neels are the only family in
their 4-H Club that shows goats.
“It has been a big learning
experience on how to show the
goats and how to feed and take
care of them,” Tricia said. Then she
smiled as she said “and it keeps me
out of trouble.”
recently when they were given
the opportunity to host and give
a presentation to a group of about
40 children and parents from
the Sioux Falls area chapter of
the South Dakota Home School
Association on their farm north
of Sherman. Some members had
read about Tricia and Karisa in
another newspaper a while back
and wanted to visit and give the
kids the opportunity to see the
goats and learn how the soap is
made.
The girls had a mostly attentive

FARM MARKET NEWS – 13
Soap
Continued from page 12
audience of kids who listened
to them as they talked about the
different kinds of goats and gave
the kids the opportunity to get an
up close view and chance to pet
the goats.
Tricia and Karisa talked about
various aspects of raising goats
and the difference between
nannies, doeings and bucks as
well as market goats.
Then it was time to show the
kids how Tricia gets the milk from
the nanny goats. Although they
are not currently milking any of
the goats, the girls brought one of
the nannies in and put it on the
milking stand.
Tricia is the only one who has
done the milking so far because
her goats are the only ones who
have had babies. Her dad said she
would get up at 5 a.m. and go out
and milk the goats before school
and again at night when she got
home from school. Karisa will get
her chance this next year.
The goats are milked by hand
twice a day and the milk that
doesn’t get used by the family is
then put in bags and frozen until it
is needed to make soap.
The process of making the
soap can almost be akin to a
science experiment with needing
to measure and add different
amounts of ingredients and seeing
a reaction when the lye is added to
the milk.
Tricia and Karisa gave a
presentation and explained the
process and the ingredients they
use when making a batch of soap.
“It takes about two hours to
make a batch of soap,” Tricia said.
“Generally we try to make soap
twice a week.” She noted they try
to keep scents on hand that sell
but they do try mixing different
scents together for something
different. One of the newest scents
smells like a Christmas tree.
The recipe they use for making
the soap was found on the Internet
while they were doing research on
the soap making process.
Once the ingredients are mixed
together the next step is to put it
in the homemade mold. Tricia
explained that before they built
their current mold they had tried
different types of pans to hold the
mixture while it sets up.
The soap stays in the mold for
24 hours and then taken out and
cut by hand in a cutting frame they
built as well.
Once the soap is cut into bars
the soap then needs to be cured
for 4-6 weeks before it is trimmed
and packaged.
“We had a lot of trial and error,”
Tricia said about the soap making
process.
Tricia, a junior at Garretson
High School, has also been
involved in FFA and through her
work with the goats and making
soap she has earned an FFA
Proficiency Award and has also
been named FFA Star Farmer.
This is in addition to earning a 4H Goat Achievement Award. She
also earned a grand prize at the
Rock County Fair and a purple
ribbon at the Minnesota State Fair
for her presentation “From Goats
to Soaps,” a pictorial display of the
soap making process.
“Mr. Mueller (Garretson FFA
Advisor) has worked with me on
marketing and selling the soap,”
Tricia said. “Mom and dad have
helped out a lot and I’m glad they
are here to help.” She commented
that she is even glad for the help
given by her little sister “She does
the oils, which is the hardest part
when mixing a batch of soap.”
Mom pointed out that they use
only all natural scents. No artificial
scents are used in the soap.
Karisa, a fifth-grader at
Garretson, said that she likes
making the soaps and mixing the
scented oils and also likes when
the baby goats are born.
The soap is marketed in a
number of ways. They sell the
soap from their home, they set
up a booth at the Jasper Goat
Races last August and according
to Tricia, the soap may be offered
when the Garretson FFA chapter
has their fruit sale. Another way
they are looking at offering the
soap for sale is on a friend’s Web
site. But as of right now it has not
started being offered.
But in the meantime Tricia and
Karisa will continue to raise and
show their goats, make soap and
be involved in FFA and 4-H. In

Lee Leysen has the “2008
Minnesota Barn of the Year” for the
Breezy Point Barn, and the Round
Barn and Annex on the Murray
County Fairgrounds won in the
publicly owned division.
  An awards banquet was held
Saturday night organized by
the Friends of Minnesota Barns
Association.   There were 70 barns
from 36 counties entered in the
competition.
 Lee has owned Breezy Point
for 20 years. In 1999 he decided to
move in a big barn to be used as a
dance hall.     The barn came from
the Holum brothers’ farm and is a
36 x 100 feet stunner with over 92
windows.
 Leysen held the first dance
in the barn in 2006, but there
were no windows in the barn at
the time.    In the past few years,
he has created a bar area while
still keeping the charm of an old
barn alive.    He had to remove the
horse stalls and milk stanchions to
make a dance floor, restrooms and
seating space, but for those who
have seen the barn it still has a lot

 At the awards banquet, the
usually talkative and jocular
Leysen, was a man of few words.
“I don’t think he knew he won,”
stated Jim Surprenant, who
attended the banquet with Leysen
and others.
After a few minutes, back at
his table, Lee was able to look at
the trophy and notice it said “2008
Barn of the Year.”
His response?
Leysen said, “I never come in
first in anything!”
The round barn on the Murray
County fairgrounds also one a
first place prize in the 2008 Barn
of the Year awards banquet for a
publicly owned building.    Christy
Riley, Murray County Community
Relations coordinator, accepted
the barn award on behalf of all the
volunteers who came forward to
help save the building.
 She stated, “Thanks to the
insight of a local citizen, Vince
Crowley, the building was placed
on the National Register of
Historic Places, which was the first
step in saving this great building.
This project wouldn’t have been
achieved had it not been for the
long list of volunteers, retired
carpenters, volunteer contractors
and well as private donations to
make this building shine again.”
 Riley continued, “The Round
Barn and annex remains a source
of community pride.   It was built
during a time of serious economic
depression in the 1930’s and was
saved by the local citizens almost 70
years later.    Murray County would
like to thank all of those dedicated
people who had a part in saving
this historic barn.   Volunteers truly
make a difference. ”
It was already an honor for two
barns located in Murray County
to make it into the finals for the
2008 Barn of the Year Awards, but
to bring home the top prizes is
truly a testament to the restoration
projects!!
 The Friends of the Minnesota
Barns Assocation is a non-profit
organization whose mission is to
“to educate the public and raise
awareness to the importance of
historic barns and farmsteads in
Minnesota, and to help advocate
for barn preservation.”

Lori Casavan (above) is co-owner of Bailey’s Restaurant and Bar with Charlie Hamman. Their place of business serves Ormsby and the surrounding farm communities.
Bailey’s bar, restaurant
attempts to keep it fresh
By Crystal Reith
Named after Lori Casavan’s Keeshond dog,
Bailey’s Restaurant and Bar has served Ormsby
and the surrounding farming communities for
the past two-and-one-half years.
Originally built in the early 1900’s, the building
resides on Main Street, which also serves as the
Watonwan and Martin County line.
“I was told that the bar was on this side of the
street because Martin (County) was dry when
it was built,” said Charlie Hamman, who is the
co-owner of Bailey’s with Casavan. “We still have
the original antique bar and the pictures on the
walls are of Ormsby back in the old days.”
Previously known as Angie’s, Casavan said
the establishment has always been a restaurant
and bar.
“We asked if the old owner wanted to sell it,”
said Casavan of St. James.
Drawing on their varying areas of experience
in the restaurant industry, the duo sharpened
their culinary skills when they leased out the
St. James golf course kitchen and bar for three
years prior to Bailey’s. Before cooking at the golf
course, Hamman owned a bar in Worthington
and Casavan gained experience as a waitress in
St. James.
Taking some of their creations from the golf
course, Bailey’s offers a different special every
day. Monday night patrons can purchase one big
classic burger and get the second one half price.
Tuesday night is all you can eat fish fry. Boneless
pork chops are available Wednesdays. BBQ ribs
are the specialty for Thursday nights. Friday is
taco night and Saturday evening offers prime
rib.
“We try to keep a fresh menu,” said Casavan.
“Our specials are pretty popular; so are the
French dip, Philly’s and burgers.”
Specials range from $3 to $11.95, depending
on the evening. Sandwiches vary in price from
$4.25 to $6.95 and dinners run from $5.75 to
$16.95.
“We have a good product with decent
portions at a reasonable price,” said Hamman.
“It’s been satisfying to hear people comment on
our food.”
Even with the rise of input costs, the team has
battled to keep their prices down.
“It’s a learning experience every day,” said
Hamman. “Everything has gone up; people
around here aren’t used to big prices.”
Yet, Hamman believes that marketing their
business and providing good service with a good
product is crucial for success.
“The best type of advertising is word of
mouth,” said Hamman. “If you have a good
product with decent portions, people will
come.”
The grill at Bailey’s is open Mondays through
Thursdays from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. and on Fridays
and Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. On Sundays,
Bailey’s is available for private parties. They also
offer a full bar and have on and off sale. Gift
certificates are available all year long as well.
“You have to have passion for the business,”
said Hamman, who finds his work very rewarding,
but hard to escape from. “It’s a lot of work.”
