2007-2008 INTRODUCTION
We hope all is well with all of you, and the last year has been productive and enjoyable.
As usual, we have been busy and are surprised that it is already fall and time to get this
year’s catalog out to all of you. We are thrilled with this year’s selections; we have added
many new varieties to the catalog as well. We are also listing several items we have not
been able to carry for some years.
Three items we are really excited to offer for the first time are Styrax japonica
‘Frosted Emerald’ PPAF. This is a variegated form of Styrax japonica that has a beautiful
cast to the foliage and has to our knowledge never been offered before to the public.
Another Styrax that is new and has not been offered before is Styrax japonica ‘Fragrant
Fountain’ PPAF. This form is unique for it’s columnar form coupled with a weeping
habit this creates a beautiful effect for any garden. The final new plant we want to
highlight is Trachycarpus wagneriensis. This relatively hardy palm is rarely offered and
can thrive in areas which other palms would only dream of. There are many other new
and exciting plants this year that we are just as excited about, we just wanted to highlight
a couple. As usual, the new items for this year will be denoted in the catalog with the
small magnolia flower next to the description.
It is time for the normal what have we been up to this year. For those of you who are new
to our nursery and catalog we are a small family operation and we pride ourselves on that
fact. Each year in the catalog we give a little highlight of the year’s events because many
of our customers we consider friends and they seem to enjoy the annual updates. Roger is
heading for 10 days to New York and the surrounding area in the first part of October. He
likes to go every couple of years to visit new gardens and to see the city. This summer
Marj, Dawn, Eric, and Pierce all went on a cruise to Alaska and enjoyed the scenery and
the time spent with family and friends. Pierce is starting the fourth grade and is looking
forward to the year with a new teacher and classmates. He spent the spring playing little
league baseball spending most of his time pitching he really enjoyed the experience.
We are thrilled with the growth of orders we are receiving on the web site. This has been
a wonderful addition and we hope for continued growth in this area; however, we are
always going to produce the paper copy of the catalog. We have no problems answering
questions and taking orders over the phone so feel free to call with questions during
regular business hours.
We currently have only two employees to thank this year. Lisa Seibright for her
assistance in the office, and Hugo Bravo for his work in the nursery. We would like to
extend extra thanks to Hugo for his work over this past year he has been a great help for
us. He has worked through the death of his 9-year-old son this past spring with a spirit
and positive outlook I think that few would be able to muster under the same
circumstances.
This year the Eugene chapter of the Willamette Valley Hardy Plant Group will be hosting
the annual study weekend. This annual event is held in different locations in the
northwest each year and is always well attended. The speakers lined up are an exciting
mix of gardening experts you would be hard pressed to see in one location again. They
include Bleddyn Wynn-Jones, Tony Noel, Helen Dillon, Whitey Lueck, Linda Beutler,
and Allan Mandell. This mix of speakers combined with the gardens that will be
available for tours will provide a great experience for anyone attending. The dates are
June 20, 21, 22 if you are interested in further information feel free to contact the hardy
plant group at “www.thehardyplantgroup.org”. You need not be a member to attend and
we have had people from all over the country attend the past seminars.
We have a couple of business notes to discuss. First, as you all know the prices for
everything is rising and is no different for our business particularly in the shipping
department. The shipping is a huge expense and we try hard to keep the cost down for
both the customers and for us. So at times, we may feel it is appropriate to change your
request for a particular shipping type in order to save “you” money. This is only done
when the plants are not going to be harmed in the process. The other balancing act is to
get you the customer the biggest specimen possible while keeping the shipping
reasonable. Because of this we may have a larger plant in a smaller box in an attempt to
get you the largest possible plant for your order while keeping the shipping cost in check.
The other problem we are having is we need all of you to be as accurate as possible with
your shipping and mailing addresses. We are having occasional problems with not
having the correct information and this can lead to delays and or failed deliveries. So
please make sure that UPS and Post Office will recognize your address as you give it to
us. This will lead to fewer missed shipments and will help you receive your plants and
future mailings in the best condition possible.
At this point all I can say is enjoy the catalog and we hope you find something that you
cannot live without! As always, call if you have questions. If you are ever in the Eugene
Springfield area feel free to visit the nursery we love to meet customers from around the
country. We are open every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with no appointment, and we
are available most any time if you call to insure one of us will be available to assist you.
FALL 2007
SPRING 2008
Indicates new plants added
this year.
ABELIA MOSANENSIS - This fragrant abelia is said to be
as fragrant as a lilac. The pink buds open up to pinkish white
flowers in late spring. Grows to 4-5' tall and wide.
1 gal.
$ 12.00
ABELIOPHYLLUM
A. DISTICHUM 'PINK STAR'. We don't know who
named this white forsythia, but we are attached to the plant.
The plants can get 5-6' tall and in late February the small pink
flowers will cover the bare stems. The flowers are lightly
scented in that period of time between the witch hazels and the
early magnolias. We suggest that your plant be grown with
some frost protection in colder climates.
2 gal.
$ 20.00
A. DISTICHUM 'ROSEUM' - This white forsythia is
pink ! The light pink flowers appear in late February on a 5-6'
open shrub. The plant has fragrant flowers and could probably
be a good host for a small flowered clematis or an annual
vine.
1 gal.
$ 12.00
ABIES
A. KOREANA 'HORSTMANN'S SILBERLOCKE' The Korean fir is a handsome plant on its own with weird dark

slow grower eventually becomes a small tree but takes many
years. The cones are held upright and complete a beautiful
picture.
1 gal.
$ 30.00
A. LASIOCARPA 'DU FLON' - One of the tiniest
conifers. This Washington native gets perhaps 3 X 3 inches in
30 years. Our plants are 4 years old and are grafted so are
monsters at 1 X 1 inches. Abies l. 'Du Flon' will make a
wonderful conversation piece in the tiny rock garden or
trough.
1 gal.
$ 50.00

has brilliant red-coral new growth in the winter. The leaves
will turn yellow-orange in fall on this 30' upright small tree.

A. GRISEUM - Paperbark Maple - Perhaps the finest,
most beautiful of all small trees. Leaves are trifoliate,
beautifully colored with brilliant splashes of gold and red for
autumn. The bark splits and peels to reveal a coppery smooth
under-surface. It is rather slow growing and just becomes
more elegant with age. Native to China. We saw the
stunning huge tree collected as seed by Ernest Wilson at the
Arnold Arboretum, Boston. The main trunk is 2-3' through-WOW!

A. PALMATUM 'FAIRY HAIR' comes to us from
plantsman Talon Buchholz. We had A. '. 'Fairy Hair' two
years ago and sold out very quickly because of the hairlike
leaves. The maple leaf is so fine it's almost hard to imagine
it's a maple. This plant makes an excellent container specimen
or a good plant for the rock garden.
1 gal.
$ 85.00
A. PALMATUM 'MOONFIRE' is a moderate (20')
purple leafed Japanese maple. The deep purple new growth
fades a little, but will stay a good purple all summer. Fall

or up to 6' tall.

A. PALMATUM 'PIXIE' - This is a Talon Buchholz

$ 10.00
A. 'ELLAMAE' - This is said to be one of the larget

winters and will survive down to 5° F.

turn beautiful red.
1 gal.
$ 35.00
A. PALMATUM 'UKIGUMO' - Truly a stunning foliage
plant. The plant has green leaves when young. As the plant
matures (slow growth) the leaves become spotted with white.
Later the leaves become mostly white and from a distance it
looks like a white shrub or small tree. Seems to be best in
more shade than less.
1 gal.
$ 42.00
A. POLYPHYLLA. This spiral agave was practically
unknown 20 years ago in this country. We first saw two plants
in Berkeley, CA and were enraphtured at the leaves spirallying
from the crown. We grow our plant in a rich potting soil and it
is now 18" across. It always causes comment. We keep our
plant under the eves of Marj's house until it goes below 15°
then put it in the garage until it warms up again.
1 gal.
$ 22.00

similar to Acer davidii, hersi, etc. The main difference is that
A. p. 'Erythrocladum' has startling brilliant red bark in winter.
A. 'Erythrocladum' is still a rare tree because of its slow
growth and difficulty of grafting. 1 gal.
$ 40.00
2 gal.
$ 50.00
A. PSEUDOPLATANUS 'ESKIMO SUNSET' Stunning is the only word for this moderate sized tree. The
foliage is dark purple beneath and a variagtion of pink creampurple or green splashes above throughout the summer. When
we first saw this tree it looked like stained glass through the
summer. It took several years to obtain a plant for our garden.
2 gal.
$ 70.00
A. RUFINERVE ERYTHROCLADUM - This fine
striped bark maple is different than A. penn. 'Erythroclaum' so
don't be confused. We were able to find a small number.
Plants seem to be bushy and full to maybe 20-25'. We rarely
get this plant as our propagator says it's maybe 5% success at
grafting.
1 gal.
$ 40.00
ARACHNOIDES SIMPLICOR VARIEGATA is an
evergreen fern that will get to about one foot tall. The deep
green leaves will have yellow variegation at the center of the

grows well with many other woodlanders.
1 gal.
$ 14.00
ARALIA
A. ELATA 'AUREOVARIEGATA' The golden
margined form of the Aralia elata. The major problem (price)
of Aralias comes from the few buds produced, so there just
isn't enough to graft each season. Our plants come from
Holland and have been grown several seasons so are very well
rooted. Other nurseries have offered the Aralias mail order,
but they are bare root, so many die before getting established.
Only three plants available
5 gal.
$ 300.00
A. SHIRASAWANUM 'AUREUM' - This gorgeous
maple has golden foliage all summer. In the fall the leaf is
even more beautiful having yellow leaves with red margins.

composed of one central mid rib with small leaves arranged
along side ribs This is a 15' shrub of great class. We have
offered A. elata 'Variegata' before but ceased offering it
because of the expensicve price. People are in love
immediately. We believe thay well be hardy well below 0° F.,
but haven't tried yet, and hope we wait many years to test
them. These are well rooted large specimens, not bare root or
one gallon size, but spectacular plants.
Only three plants available
5 gal.
$ 300.00
A. SHIRASAWANUM 'AUTUMN MOON' - Similar to
A. s. 'Aureum' but this small tree has handsome pinkish

interesting plant is rarely offered for sale. These are small but
well rooted plants.
2 1/4 " pots
$ 30.00
2

probably a cross of two European species of arbutus. The
stems peel to reveal the orange-copper bark. A. 'Marina' needs
good drainage and a moderate climate, such as coastal
Arbutus 'Marina' (cont.)

Victor Reiter, Jr. garden in San Francisco and it was a
stunning tree.
1 gal.
$ 22.00

thorns. The main time the thorns are a problem is during the
growing in the nursery or planting them. B. 'Pirate King' is
deciduous with small yellow flowers, followed by superb
bright pink fruit in fall. The more fall color we can have in the
garden the better we can enjoy our gardens through the year.
2 gal.

'EDITH BOGUE' - This is the hardiest grandiflora we
grow. We had thought hardiness was the main reason to grow
it. The overall plant is very bushy and full with narrow leaves
that are dark green with light tomentum. 'Edith Bogue' also
seems to withstand our wet snows better than most
grandifloras. M. 'Edith Bogue' just gets more beautiful each
year.

Vancouver, BC, where he has used several palms to frame the
house and view. Also, makes a fine container specimen.

STYRAX
S. 'CARILLON' - "Cousin It". That's the nickname
S. 'Carillon' has gotten here. The main trunk is irregular and
will lose and regain the central leader over time. The dark
green foliage cascades all summer. In the fall the foliage
turns yellow. The flowers are small white stars. The foliage is
so full that the trunks can't be seen, hence its nickname,
"Cousin It."

S. JAPONICA 'EMERALD PAGODA' - We first saw
this plant at NCSU a year after J.C. Raulston had gone to
Korea. (1985?). The original and only graft was 6 inches tall
and well hidden in the greenhouse. Two years later I asked
J.C. if any were available. Yes, 6 inch plants or a 3-4 foot
specimen. We found a large box and brought the three to four
foot plant home. The first 2 years the leaves were small then
it got established. The leaves are double the size and the
flowers are at least twice the size as S. japonica. It looks
tropical in its lushness. Again, "Thank you," to J.C.

T. WAGNERIENSIS - We have been told this palm is
harder than T. fortunei so will probably survive 0° F. The
leaves are smaller than T. fortunei but are still lovely. Some
gardeners say that windmill palms don't fit our mixed
woodlland gardens but both these palms are native to the same
areas our rhododendron and magnolias are found so we think
they fit beautifully while also adding the tropical look. Plants
are small but at a reasonable price for this rare plant. Thanks
to Roger Warner for the seed!

TRICYRTIS 'EMPEROR' has golden chartreuse
foliage and light blue purple flowers in late summer. The
tricyrtis are nice woodland plants for the late summer color.
Don't worry when the plants arrive dormant or small as they
do nothing but get more beautiful and the plant gets larger.
1 gal.
$ 10.00
TROCHODENDRON ARALLOIDES - The Japanese
Wheel Tree. Trochodendron is a small evergreen tree of
subtle beauty. The bronze new growth expands as a single
shoot then during the growth season it branches. (It doesn't
stop growing, but essentially pinches itself.) The largest
plants we've seen are 25-30 feet tall and grow in a layered
form. Flower clusters are chartreuse and the seed pods turn
red in late summer. Slow growing and difficult to propagate.

TROPAEOLUM POLYPHYLLUM is a perennial
nasturtium from southern Chilie. The foliage is gray blue
green in spring-early summer. The stems are only 18" long
and grow quickly in spring, but will totally disappear by early
July.. The flowers are golden yellow and look like small
nasturtium flowers.. Tropaeolum polyhyllum is
extraordinarilly difficult to find in gardens let alone nurseries.
We don't have a large supply but want to make the plant
available. T. polyphyllum needs well drained gravelly soil and
with us seems to grow best scrambling through a small shrub.

T 'BUMP'S BLUE' - A blue needled form of our native
mountain hemlock. These are grafted plants, so the blue
foliage will always hold the color. 1 gal.

T. CANADENSIS 'LEWISII' is an upright growing
tightly branched hemlock. The deep green foliage is very full
on the branches. Will eventually make a 3-4 ' shrub in many
years. T. c. 'Lewisii' is excellent for rock gardens or
containers.

T. MERTENSIANA - This Mountain Hemlock has more
gray-green needles than the species and growth seems to be
more irregular than the species.

VACCINIUM V. GLAUCO ALBUM - The more visitors see this plant
the more they want it. Our 10 year old plants are 12-18 inches
tall and are 24 inches across. Oval, dark green leaves have
blue indumentum (the correct term?) underneath the leaves.
Flowers, soft pink in small clusters---- no fruit so far.

V. 'SUNSHINE BLUE' - This blueberry has small, rich
blue foliage all summer. The plant only gets 3-4 feet tall.
Will grow in full sun or semi-shade. We were perhaps the
first retail mail order offering V. 'Sunshine Blue' in the U.S.
These plants are of medium size, sweet tasting blueberries.
The fruit is produced over an extended period in late JulyAugust.

VIBURNUM V. BODNANTENSE 'CHARLES LAMONT' A sister
(brother ?) to Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn'. V. 'Charles

quantity of the V. 'Dawn' bloom, but has much better display
when it does bloom.

VIBURNUM CARLESSII COMPACTA - Bush form Gets to 6' tall after many years. The flowers have pink buds
that open to white. The flowers are wonderfully scented
cinnamon. We have seen this plant in Detroit so know it is
very hardy.

V. CARLESSII COMPACTA - Tree form - We only
have a few of these cute plants. This is C. carlesii 'Compacta'
grafted on another Viburnum at about 2' creating a small tree.
The pink buds open to beautiful white cinnamon flowers.
Makes an excellent plant for a patio container.

V. CONOY - This National Arboretum hybrid gets to be a
handsome 2-3' shrub. Whenever we see the plant in a garden,

garden 2 years ago. Flowers are white and are cinnamon
scented.

V. DENTATUM 'CARDINAL CANDY' (v.d. Henneke PPAF). This extra hardy (at least -30° F.) has
white flowers in late spring and in fall the fruit turns brilliant
red.

V. DILATATUM 'MICHAEL DODGE' - We first saw
this plant in several gardens along the Hudson River and
wanted it immediately. Not so easy to find. The normal V.
dilatatum has red fruit, but dilitatum 'Michael Dodge' has
golden yellow clusters. This is a truly gorgeous shrub for the
fall garden. Grow with V. 'Cardinal Candy' for a heavy fruit
set.

January-early March. This is one of the parents of V. 'Dawn'
so the fragrance is very pleasant in winter.

and early summer. In late summer it turns to light green then
in fall V. opelus 'Aurea' will change to golden yellow with

attractive plant from April - December.

VITIS - All grapes (Vitis) cannot be shipped to
California.
V. DAVIDII . The only grape with thorns (that we know).
The soft barbs cover the stemms of this large grower. The
foliage can be up to 18" across. Since these are grafted, we
haven't ever had fruit. We assume they need a pollinizer.

$ 15.00
V. COIGNETIAE - A large grape that has glorious fall
colors. The large leaves are heavily veined dark green. In fall
the foliage turns rich reds, purples, oranges, and yellow.
Should be grown on a heavy trellis.
1 gal.
$ 15.00
V. VINIFERA 'BRANDT' - A very exciting grape vine
from Europe. The green foliage turns brilliant colors in fall.
It's interesting to see the fall color each year because it is
unusual. Makes a 10-15' vine for a trellis or can be stunning
through a small tree popping out here and there.
1 gal.
$ 15.00
V. VINIFERA 'PURPUREA' - The purple leaf grape has
dark purple - green leaves all summer and as fall comes the
leaves turn glowing red purple and last for weeks. This is a

tiny and unbelievably black and sour.

like it or not? We have yet to decide. The foliage is bright
yellow (nice) and the flowers are red-purple (weird). You may

TERMS
This catalog applies to Fall 2005, and Spring 2006, shipping:
PLEASE ORDER FROM THE CURRENT CATALOG ONLY. Customers will
automatically receive our new catalog each fall. Since certain varieties are often in limited supply,
customers find that by placing their order in the fall for fall or spring shipping we can better ensure
availability and choice of size. Please offer suggested substitutes, though we don't substitute unless
instructed.
PLANTS ARE TAGGED AS ORDERS ARE RECEIVED, therefore earliest orders receive
first choice of plants..............First come, first served.
PAYMENT WITH ORDER PLEASE... WE NOW ACCEPT VISA OR MASTERCARD, and
do not charge the card until the time of the shipment.
We ship earth balls reduced to a minimum in a plastic bag. We do not practice bare root
shipping due to severe shock. We will substitute smaller sizes of your suggested substitutes if
necessary and refund balance.
Shipments are made when plants are dormant from October to March (primarily October 15 to
December 15 and February 15 to early May). We refuse to ship if we deem soft growth too advanced
for sustained crated containment and refund customer's money. We advise midwestern and eastern
customers who receive plants in Spring in dormant condition, and then unpack and hold plants in lighted
basement, garage, or cool greenhouse until danger of severe frost is past.
Shipping: We ask the customer to state choice of carrier, but be receptive to alternative
suggestions. Plants become the property of the customer upon delivery to the transportation company
and we cannot be responsible for loss, damage, or delay. Claims for damage in transit should be made
to the carrier (not the driver). Save all packing materials and contents. Please include street address,
telephone number, and any other pertinent information to aid in delivery.
REGARDING PACKING AND SHIPPING CHARGES:
In the effort to simplify the terms of shipping, 20% for shipments west of the Mississippi River or 30% east of the Mississippi River, which will include the packing and prepaid ground UPS or Parcel
Post. This cost (20% or 30% has been reviewed and turns out to be almost exactly the price we charged
in the past for packing and ground shipping). If you wish 2nd day air UPS, 3rd day select UPS, we
will charge 10% packing plus shipping at cost. Due to increased boxing and shipping costs, minimum
packing and shipping is $10.00.
Re: 2nd Day UPS, We would like people to know that 2nd day
UPS should only be used when absolutely necessary. 3rd Day Select UPS is drastically less money and
only involves one more day which will not noticably affect the plants. Unless otherwise requested, we
send plants by Regular ground UPS which sometimes takes 10 days to the east coast. Therefore we
often recommend 3rd day UPS, a little more expensive, but a saving in transit time.
Plants are guaranteed true to name and are carefully selected quality plants. Our plants are
regularly inspected by the Oregon Agriculture Department.
Since we cannot control planting or
growing conditions after shipment, we cannot be responsible for loss.
We can supply a wholesale catalog upon request to nurseries and landscapers.

Plants, pricing and shipping .....
We really care about our plants, customers, and pricing and, therefore, we address
these issues here:
In general, 1 gallon plants are 6"-18", 2 gallon plants are 18"-24", and 3 gallon
plants are 24"-36". Most of our plants are grafted or cutting grown from our own stock
plants, so we know the correct variety. We also feel that it is better to have cultivars or
known varieties than seedlings. The plants we list have been at the nursery for a least one
season, and our catalog is based on plants in stock at press time. We list plants only
when we have at least 10 of a variety and try to indicate when so few are available.
From our garden and others we choose only the finest most adaptable plants. Since
we are small and don't have a large staff, we can't handle having thousands of varieties of
plants for sale. We put our plants through an evaluation process in our garden. So when
you make a choice you know we have already grown that plant in our own garden and
found it has more beautiful flowers, foliage, fruit, hardiness, etc. than other varieties we
have tried.
As to price, a difficult decision, we try to be fair so not just the wealthy can afford
the plants (we are collectors, too). In many cases there are no other sources to compare
cost, so difficulty in acquisition, propagation, container growing, as well as other nursery
costs must come into play.
Shipping times are between October and December and again February into early
May while the plants are in dormant state. We are always watching the weather across
the country to try to ship the orders so they arrive in good condition. We do not bare root
plants, but do reduce the earth ball to lighten the ship weight while still keeping soil with
the roots. Plants are tied into plastic bags, then tied into cardboard cartons, thus greatly
limiting loss. We'll try to meet your shipping date request, but our schedules, weather,
etc. may affect our ability to do this. In spring, please be patient as we get snowed under
with orders so sometimes it takes until mid May to catch up with the orders. We reserve
the plants ordered and charge credit cards when the plants are shipped, as we are able to
reconcile plants, packing, and shipping charges.
If we have not answered some of your questions, feel free to call.
Re: Your want lists - Often there are plant varieties available in numbers too
few to list here.
We invite inquiries and try to advise where plants are
available, if not here.

many peony growers’ favorite variety. The flowers have multiple shadings of red, purple and peach. The six inch
flowers are lovely in bud as well in full bloom. The foliage is dark green spring-summer. In fall there is yellow
and red fall color. We only have five plants available, but the picture was so beautiful we couldn’t help but list
this stunner. First come, first served. 2 gallon $ 150.00.
