Syktyvkar
Syktyvkar is the capital of the Republic of
Komi. The word «Syktyvkar» means «a town
on the Sysola river». The first mentioning of a
settlement in the mouth of the Sysola river
dates back to year 1586. In January 1780 it
was given a name Ust-Sysolsk which became
the centre of the territory. In the year of its
150-th anniversary it was renamed into
Syktyvkar.
The climate is severe. The winter is snowy
and frosty and the summer is never too hot.
Syktyvkar today is a big administrative,
industrial, scientific, cultural and sporting
centre. The population is 251,1 thousand
people of more than 70 nationalities.

Raisa Smetanina Republican Skiing complex
One of the best ski stadiums in Russia for preparation of
cross-country skiers was founded in 1977 and is
currently a venue for annual Russian nationals, 10 allRussian competitions and other 2-3 events included in
the FIS calendar. In 1985 и 1997 the stadium hosted
World Cup series in cross-country skiing and ski
orienteering. The technical staff of the complex prepares
and maintains some 47 km of different ski courses.
In 1992 the
Republican Ski
Complex was named
after Raisa
Smetanina, a fourtime Olympic
champion.

The ski complex serves as a training base
for leading coaches and renowned Olympic
champions Vasily Rochev and Raisa
Smetanina, members of the Russian national
team: Vasily Rochev (junior), Yulia Ivanova
and Stanislav Volzhentsev.
Every year Olympic champions Nikolay
Bazhukov, Vasily Rochev and Niina Rocheva
give a start to ski races.
More than 600 children from Russian and
former Soviet republics take part in
completions to win Raisa Smetanina prizes.
The stadium also offers trails for amateur
fans of cross-country skiing.

Skies can be prepared for the race using a modern
technology of micro grinding on a Mantec Svecom machine
improving the ski surface.

The ski complex provides a wide range of extra services: a
health rehabilitation center, a sauna, a steam house.
The visitors can rent skies and other winter sports
equipment.

You can reach Syktyvkar both by air and by train, from Moscow or St-Petersburg. Every day there
are several regular flights from these cities.

UTair-Express. The average flight time - 1 hour 45 minutes. Aircrafts land at the airport Syktyvkar.

Also, you can reach Syktyvkar by train from Moscow and St-Petersburg. The railway companies
provide good quality services for comfortable travelling, including left-luggage office and free parking.
At the railway station you can get a light meal and buy food to go. The train from Moscow to
Syktyvkar leaves daily from the Yaroslavski station. Trains form St.Petersbourg to Syktyvkar depart
from Ladozhskiy station. The route passes through the cities: Alexandrov, Rostov, Yaroslavl, Danilov,
Vologda, Velsk, Kotlas, Koryazhma, Mikun. Travelling by train from St-Petersburg or Moscow will
take much longer.
So, we recommend to take by plane.

How to get to Syktyvkar by car?
From Moscow you can travel by car via Yaroslavl, Kostroma and
Kirov. The driving distance is about 1300 km and the trip will take you
about 16 hours on Routes R159 and А119.
The driving distance from St-Petersburg is about 1500 km, and the
trip will take about 17-18 hours on Routes А114 and М10.

Sights of Syktyvkar
Syktyvkar is a cultural and scientific center of the republic. The National Museum of Komi can
boast a unique collection of exhibits telling about the republic’s history. The National Gallery
displays a fine collection of old and modern art. The Museum of Geology presents samples of
local flora and fauna, minerals and fossil fuels.

Museum
The museum of four-time Olympic champion Raisa Smetanina was founded in 1997. It is located in a
detached house that was a gift to the celebrated skier from the republic. The exhibition of the museum
unrolls the history of cross- country skiing in the second half of the XX century through personal
items, photos and other exhibits connected with the life of the legendary athlete.

В центре города расположен Академический театр драмы им.В.Савина
История театра начинается с 1918 года, когда писатель Виктор Савин организовал труппу из
любителей сцены и поставил спектакль по своей пьесе на коми языке.
На центральной улице города расположен и Государственный театр оперы и балета
Республики Коми Почти два десятка лет театр проводит ежегодный международный
фестиваль оперы и балета «Сыктывкарса тулыс» - «Сыктывкарская весна». Главная
традиция Фестиваля – непременная оперная премьера театра, открывающая Фестиваль.
С 1992 года ведет свою историю Национальный музыкально-драматический театр Республики
Коми Все спектакли идут только на коми языку с синхронным переводом на русский.
Репертуар театра – спектакли, созданные на основе фольклора и эпоса коми народа.
Один из любимых жителями Сыктывкара центров культуры - республиканская филармония
ведет свою историю с 1940 года. Государственный ансамбль песни и танца Республики Коми
«Асья кыа» является визитной карточкой республики, представляя ее на различных
международных конкурсах.

The Finno-Ugric Ethnic and Cultural Park is located in a
picturesque place at the village of Yb, just 40 kilometers away
from the ski stadium. The park will take you on an excursion
exploring life and tradition of the Komi people and will give you
