For the third time in six years the Notre
Dame Club of Gettysburg was named the
Outstanding Club in the F size category at the
annual Senate Conference at the University
of Notre Dame. The club also won this award
for their work in 2006 and 2009. Eight members of the group attended the three day conference from April 19-21. This was the largest representation of any club in the United States. The conference completed just in time for attendees
to catch the annual Spring Blue and Gold football game.
A key part of the meeting was the annual awards program that rewards clubs for their performance
during the preceding year, in this case 2011. The Gettysburg Club received a Special Citation Award
for their sponsorship of Notre Dame and Green Bay Packer Great Mike McCoy’s presentations to area
Catholic schools in January. The club was presented with a Program Excellence Award for outstanding performance in all areas of the “6C” categories—Communications, Continuing Education,
Camaraderie, Community Service, Catholicity/Spirituality, and Current Student Support. And, finally,
the club was presented with the Outstanding Club Award in their size category. This award carries
with it significant prestige within the Notre Dame Family and also provides a personal visit from head
coach Brian Kelly to a club function. We are expecting Coach to return for another lunch event next
May.
Thank you to all who helped make these accomplishments possible!
Hesburgh Lecture - Cindy Bergeman at Joseph Theater!
LEFT - Dr. Bergeman in action.
Cindy Bergeman presented her talk entitled “Aging Successfully” to over 65
members and friends at Gettysburg College on April 12th. Dr. Bergeman also
spent the weekend in Gettysburg with her
husband Dean and daughter Hannah.
They enjoyed a John Murphy tour of the
battlefield, a visit to the Wills House, and
lunch at the Farnsworth House. During
the lecture Dr. Bergeman provided a test which gave the attendees some idea as to
how long they can expect to live - a topic of interest to all. The Gettysburg Club
was extremely pleased to co-sponsor this event with the Department of Psychology at Gettysburg College. Chairman Steve Siviy provided super support and
there were quite a few students and other attendees from the college. The club was
very pleased with Dr. Bergeman’s lecture and also happy she and her family
members could experience the town of Gettysburg! Many thanks to Cindy and
her family!

2012 HESBURGH MONTH OF SERVICE PROJECTS
SINGING FOR RESIDENTS - On May 20th the ND Gettysburg singers made a trip to the Golden Living Center in Gettysburg. This session was dedicated to Father Hesburgh. Over thirty
five (35) residents enjoyed the program as the team of 14 NDG
members sang and clowned around. RIGHT - The team honors
our country by singing “America, the Beautiful”. BOTTOM LtoR - 1. President Emeritus Murphy leads the singing in his
finest ND garb. 2. The sign in the lobby publicizes the event to
residents. 3. Linda Masenheimer and Mary Alice Forbes clap
while John Steinour does his version of the “Chicken Dance”. 4.
Linda takes the time to bring resident Merle into the dancing festivities. Merle has been to every sing-a-long we have held in the
last 8 years. This one was the 28th such event. As usual, the final
three songs were a tribute to God, Country, and Notre Dame:
Amazing Grace (God), America the Beautiful (Country) and the
Notre Dame Victory March (Notre Dame).

their 2012
Shirts.
For the third
year in a row the
club added a
space on our order form for “The Shirt” so members could purchase extras for one or more boys at the Paradise School in Abbottstown, PA. In all, the club donated a shirt for each of the 22
boys who are live-in boarders at the school. On May 16 Chairperson Jean Conrad presented the shirts to the students and Greg
Landi, Assistant Director of Paradise. Greg said, “The boys are
always excited to get the shirts. Thank you to the club members!”
Rick Staub and Jim Conrad were also present and met the boys
and introduced themselves. It was great to get an opportunity to
provide copies of “The Shirt” to these students and to spend a little
time talking to them. We congratulate the staff at Paradise for the
work they do at this facility!
ROUTE 116 CLEAN-UP!
Father Hesburgh’s Road Crew was on the job on May
12th, walking the 2 mile section of route 116, our assigned
road. This was our second road event of the year and 16
members and 1 guest showed up for work. Fourteen (14)
bags of trash were collected on this day.
Photo Below - Tiffany Lawrence, Jeanette Miller, Wilma
Noel, and Randy Noel put out the crew sign to warn drivers of the clean-up activity.

DOLLY DUFFY TO SPEAK AT UND LUNCHEON ON JUNE 23rd
This year’s UND Celebration will take place on June 23rd and follow the same format as last year. It has become tradition for our UND event to begin with a Mass on the Gettysburg Battlefield at 10:00am. This year
Father Mike Reid, our club Chaplain, will officiate the Mass. This will be the eighth consecutive year for the
club’s Battlefield Mass at the Corby Statue, which is placed on the spot where Father Corby gave General Absolution to the Irish Brigade during the Civil War. After Mass, there will be a luncheon held at the faculty dining
hall on the campus of Gettysburg College.
Dolly Duffy, Executive Director of the Notre Dame Alumni Association and Associate Vice President for University Relations, will be our speaker. Dolly oversees the daily operations of the alumni association, including
communications, marketing, finance, technology, alumni affinity groups, and professional, academic, spiritual,
and service programs. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Notre Dame in 1984. Dolly and her
husband, Dan Fangman, purchased Atchison Products in 1990 and grew the company substantially over 17
years. The company was acquired by BIC Graphic USA in 2007. Early in her career Dolly was a press secretary
for a U. S. Congressman and spent five years working in Public Relations in St. Louis and Kansas City. Dolly
accompanied Coach Kelly on his trip to our club’s luncheon in 2011 and expressed a desire to come back. Rick
Staub quickly invited her to be our 2012 UND Speaker and she accepted!

NDG MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Bob Krumrine
Bob Krumrine has been a member of the ND Club of Gettysburg since 2009. He first heard
about the club from his daughter Jen, who is also a member and serves on the board. Bob
currently lives in McSherrystown with his wife Diane and four daughters (Jen, Stefani,
Melissa and Erica ). He is employed by RH Sheppard Co. Inc. as a cost account analyst.
Bob’s hobbies are remodeling, tasting different microbrews, and of course his famous chili
cooking. He has won 2nd place in chili cook-off’s and we are sure a 1st place is in the near
future!
Bob’s favorite club events are the annual bingos, road clean-ups, and game watches. Bob had
a chance to attend Senate for the first time in April 2012, and that is now on the list as well.
He likes how there are always a lot of members who participate in the variety of events the
club holds. It shows the dedication of the club - not just to ND sports, but to the University of Notre Dame overall. Memorable club
experiences were meeting Coach Brian Kelly, May 2011, and traveling to South Bend with the club for the past few years. Favorite
campus moments include drums at midnight, steak sandwiches from the K of C, and “Door Duty” at the Sacred Heart Parish Center…. a term that Bob and members of NDG coined!
Bob currently serves as the club’s food and cell phone donation chairperson. Over the last four years this program has provided
7,102 items of food and $494 to God’s Meal Barrel in Hanover and 273 cell phones to the ND Cell Phone Donation project in
Michigan. In 2010 Bob received the President’s Award, presented to a first year member who has made a significant contribution to
the club. In 2011 Bob participated in 25 club events, assisted with bingos, road clean-ups, the Lenten retreat, the UND Luncheon,
and served on the Coach Kelly luncheon planning committee.
Thank you, Bob, for all you do! Tawnya Railing
CATCHING UP WITH EMILY #1
Jim Conrad recently received an email from Emily Garnett, our Emily #1, who graduated from Notre Dame in 2009. Here is what
she had to say, “ Sorry to have been out of touch! I actually just finished my first year in the Masters of Journalism program at the
University of Missouri. As you may remember, I'm specializing in agricultural journalism, so I've been writing about agriculture and
the environment for the J school's paper, the Columbia Missourian, as well as a local ag publication here, the Missouri Ruralist. After a whirlwind week's vacation back home in PA, I'm heading to Omaha, NE today, to start an internship as a reporter at DTN/
Progressive Farmer. I'll be there through August, and then I'll start my last year at Mizzou!
I hope all is well with the ND club of Gettysburg--I spent some time on the battlefield last week and thought of you all when I came
across the Father Corby statue! What is the other Emily up to after graduation? Any new local students heading to ND?” Emily G
ALAN PERRY PUTS TOGETHER ANOTHER GREAT LENTEN ACTIVITY PROGRAM
Director of Faith Activities Alan Perry distinguished
himself once again with a great Lenten Program. It included Continental Breakfast, a Tender Strong and
True DVD program, a Lenten Lecture by Fr. Jonathon
Sawicki, a Mass officiated by our chaplain Father Mike
Reid in Christ Chapel, and Lunch at the Gettysburg
Family restaurant in Gettysburg. Great job, Alan!

program and the best yet! Thanks, Alan

JUST IN FROM NOTRE DAME
5/5 - So, classes are all done here. I am lucky that all of my final papers were due last week so I can really enjoy my last two
weeks on campus with no exams! Next year I will be doing Teach for America. TFA is a 2 year service teaching program that
places recent college grads in needy schools in cities and regions across the country. I will be in St. Louis teaching preschool.
After graduation, I will be home for a bit and then head off to Chicago for summer training and arrive in St. Louis in August. It
should be a busy couple of months, but I am excited for the journey ahead! While I am so happy to be working with Teach for
America, I will miss Notre Dame terribly. These three years have been the best and I will miss everything from my dorm to the
dining hall to my running route. It has truly become my home and I am so grateful for my time here. The Notre Dame Club of
Gettysburg's help and support over the past few years has made it even better and my family and I cannot thank you
enough. Love thee Notre Dame, Emily
——————————————————————————————————————————
It's hard to believe I'm halfway done with my time at Notre Dame. I just recently finished my finals, wrapping up yet another
incredible semester. I have a lot to look forward to this summer, though. I will be taking a couple weeks off, then heading back
to South Bend for my internship with Rent Like A Champion, a local real estate company. I'm going to appreciate some time off
from school, but am already looking forward to next year. Thank the club for the care package, it's always appreciated. Steven
CLUB BEGINS NEW PARTNERSHIP TO ASSIST THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS TEAM IN ADAMS COUNTY
Wilma Noel has initiated a new
series of projects to help the Special Olympics group in Adams
County. As you all know, John
Steinour is our very own Special
Olympics athlete and he has
brought a lot of smiles and hugs
to our organization. Wilma
wanted our club to take on some
new efforts to help this organization. The first of these took place
on May 24th when we supplied
14 members to help with their
annual Golf Tournament. Two
other projects will follow in the
next several months. Everyone
had a great time helping in several
ways on the first project and we
look forward to building a great
relationship with this group
in the coming months and
years.

MORE MEMORIES FROM 1st HALF - 2012!
“The View” - From the Board
Members of the Notre Dame Club of Gettysburg,
Congratulations Outstanding ND Club! What an awesome group of club members. I can't believe 2012 is halfway over. The best is
yet to come! I am so proud to be a member of this club. It's been an honor to be your President. Rick
We did it again. Outstanding Club! What an accomplishment. The word at Notre Dame now is that it's all about "Subway
Power!". Learn to use the power of your “Subways” and you can do great things. Had to chuckle (with pride of course) when eight
of us streamed up onto the stage in a packed McKenna Hall Auditorium. A guy on the aisle said "What did you do.... bring the
whole darn Club?" Not a bad idea, I thought. Hey members - mark your calendars and join our caravan to Alumni Senate 2013
next year. The date is easy to remember - it’s two days before the Blue-Gold Game in Notre Dame stadium. Oh, and get ready for
another stirring pep talk from Coach Brian Kelly shortly afterwards when he visits our Spring Club Luncheon - A "payback" visit
that is given to Outstanding Clubs only. Congratulations. You did it - ND Gettysburg ! John Murphy, Class of ‘55, PE
