Any resemblance to the car of your dreams
is purely intentional.
It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Introducing the
Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission
and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in
varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief

fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.

We have added a new segment to Porscheforus for 2016 called “Throwback Porsche”. NNJR historian, Bob Knapik has a few interesting
installments to get us going however, we’d love to feature your Porsche stories from years ago. If you have any interesting Porsche stories
and or pictures, whether it be club related or racing related, we would love to feature them in the “Throwback Porsche” segment.

Was ist neu?
W
ell, it is November 24 and
just 23 days ago I wrapped
up my stint as VP and
Track Chair. So now I sit here writing
my first article as NNJR President.
Not sure where to begin but how
about I hope everyone is enjoying
the Holidays and Happy New Year!!!
I still can’t get used to our editorial
calendar. LOL.
As your new President I think it
is appropriate for me to let you know
what I have in mind and believe we
should focus on. In line with and
what Drew indicated in 2014 when
he became our President, I believe
our mission as a Board (BoG) should
be to increase member enthusiasm,
participation, and satisfaction. It is
through this the club will continue
to grow and prosper and provide real
value to its membership – you. We all
joined the PCA for various reasons
and we each have our own expectations about what we want to get out
of belonging to this great car club. If
you are happy to just receive and read
the P4Us magazine, we need to make
sure we have great content, it is well
supported and timely. If you are at the
other end of the spectrum and want
to participate in as many programs as
possible, we need to make sure each
program is well thought out, fun and
well executed.
I assure you we have a great
team, your BoG, that is willing and
able to perpetuate all the good stuff
and improve upon all the things we
could do better. They are also committed to listening to you our members and to keep our programs fun
and give you ample reason to come
back to the next event. I know that
in the time I have been a NNJR-PCA
member, I have personally witnessed
4
PORSCHEFORUS JANUARY 2016
By Tom Iervolino l NNJR President
some great people rising to the occasion
(and a bunch of hard work, teamwork
and commitment), have improved all
facets of NNJR and made belonging to
the Club something a very important
part of my life. I anticipate no less in
the coming year.
In the next couple of Porscheforus
issues, you will notice a few changes
to our roster of Elected Board members
and Committee and Chair leaders (your
BoG). So here is a quick rundown of
who is who for 2016:
As you can tell, it takes quite a few
volunteers to run a club of our size and
with as many programs and activities as
we have. These volunteers are really a
great bunch of people and certainly can
use your help and support. So, if you
see the opportunity to help out or we
send out a call for volunteers, please do
so as we all have an incentive to keep
this the best car club in the world. If
you have any ideas or thought on how
to improve the club, please feel free to
email me at [email protected] or
call me on my cell at 862-206-9610.

Driver’s Log
By Tom Swift l Vice President and Track Chair
Gu t e s N e u e s Jahr !
I
t is January of an even numbered year, the time when NNJR
changes its leadership team. Drew
has moved to the coveted job of Immediate Past President, which strikes
me as a little like becoming a grandparent: same fun, less work. Enjoy it,
Drew, you have earned it. Tom Iervolino, having set a high bar as a terrific
Track Chair, becomes President.
He and I are getting used to hearing
“if you need something, ask Tom.”
Which Tom? The President is the one
with the gray hair. Oh, wait…
To succeed Tom as Track Chair
I am giving up the power of the purse
– Treasurer. I confess that to my
surprise, making the books balance
to the penny each month became a
source of satisfaction. Engineers, like
accountants, love it when the numbers come out right. And I will miss
being the most popular person at our
monthly board meetings - everybody
loves the person with the checkbook.
Janice Ernsting is our new treasurer
and is a real pro, so you may rest
assured that the club’s finances are in
very good hands.
After the sudden and untimely
death of our Track Registrar Bob Michaelson, Craig Mahon is taking on
that responsibility and I look forward
to working closely with him.
I am excited to now take a turn
in leading NNJR’s Driver Education
program. Our first DE was held 45
years ago this May 1 at Lime Rock
Park. Over many years we have
learned how to make these events
educational, fun, and most importantly, safe. In fact, our slogan is “Safe,
Serious Fun.” We work with PCA National to insure we use best practices
6
PORSCHEFORUS JANUARY 2016
gained from national DE experience
and we follow the rules and guidelines
set out by National. Our events are
guided by these principles:
1) We combine our knowledge and
experience with that of PCA National
and each track to run the safest possible
events.
2) We comply with PCA DE rules and
guidelines that enable us to obtain
insurance for our events at affordable
rates.
3) We improve each driver’s experience
by placing him or her into a run group
with drivers of like experience and
speed.
4) We run our events efficiently to allow
for the most track time possible.
Of these the first is clearly our top
priority. As past Safety Chair, I was
occasionally asked by our tech inspection team to speak with an entrant who
was insisting that he (note: never a she
in my experience) be granted an exception to one of our technical safety
standards (“the dog ate my replacement
brake pads”). I took a very dim view of
these kinds of requests and I promise
I will do so as Track Chair. We will
bend over backwards to insure people
have fun and learn much; but we will
not compromise our safety standards. I
note with a sigh that those of you reading this are almost certainly not those
who might be tempted to cut a safety
corner or two. As usual, we have a busy
agenda for the year. For those of you
who have not experienced high performance driver education, we will hold on
January 31 our Mid-Winter Introduction
to Performance Driving. This tutorial
covers everything you need to know
to get started in DE. At this event we
will also introduce the NNJR Autocross
program.
On February 21, we hold our
instructor seminar in the morning (by
invitation only) and in the afternoon, we
will hold our driver seminar, which is
open to all but recommended for those
with prior DE experience. This event
will feature pro racer and coach Kyle
Tilley and, although the agenda is not
finalized, we plan to include discussions
on the use of video and telemetry in
driver training.
Although not all contracts with the
tracks are signed as I write this column,
our DE schedule for the year is pretty
well locked in. We have eleven events
on the calendar, including Lime Rock,
NJMP (x3), Mid Ohio, Pocono, Mosport, Watkins Glen (x2), Palmer and
VIR. Major changes for this year will
be running on the repaved track at Watkins Glen and once again being able to
run the double infield at Pocono. I will
be working closely with Tom and Craig
to improve upon our already excellent
program, using participant feedback
contained in www.DrivingEvals.com. I
also encourage you to contact me with
your comments and suggestions.
Finally, some of you may be asking the same question that I am asking
myself frequently: How on earth did
I get here? Unsurprisingly, it is a long
story, one that started years ago with
my seduction by the lateral g-forces
experienced on the windy roads north
of NYC in my best friend’s MGB. It
includes my first pride and joy: a 1972
240Z with suspension tricks from Bob
Sharp Racing. As a grad student and
then a young engineer at Ford, a series
of increasingly powerful motorcycles
followed (togetherness is two people
on a motorcycle at 135mph). “Vehicle

dynamics” took a respite for twenty
years to focus on career and family.
The narrative runs through my first
few NNJR track events at Pocono
(“Wow! Are they really going to let
me drive here?”) and at Mid Ohio
(“How hard can this really be, in the
pouring rain?” Answer: not all that
hard if you have a great instructor
like Laurel Townsend). After a lot of
seat time, I was pleased to become
an NNJR instructor and later honored to be asked to become one of
our chief instructors. And now, track
chair. As a good friend and former
student of mine – now a PCA club
racer – said to me: “Gee, that sounds
like a lot of work.” Maybe so, but I am
ready. Many wonderful people encouraged, taught and helped me along the
way. Some, like Bill Gilbert and Knute
Hancock, are still on track. Others, like
Rick and Laurel Townsend, Dick Fell
and Dennis Thovson have retired from
the track. Sadly, some like Bob Michaelson and Art Pilla, are no longer
with us. I take on the job in part because
“someone has to do it” but mostly out
of a sense of gratitude and respect for
those instructors, chief instructors and
track chairs who through their hard
work and enthusiasm made our DE
program the finest in the country.
I can’t wait for the season to start.
JANUARY 2016 PORSCHEFORUS

A
few weeks ago we went up
to the summer DE event at
the Glen. This is usually the
highlight of our DE season:
Paul Miller Porsche brings up a fantastic
array of late model cars for test drives
and sponsors the ever popular Dinosaur
BBQ, we all receive a commemorative
T shirt and on Friday night there is usually the Scungili festival at Frank Bennets trailer to benefit a charitable cause.
This year the event was a little bittersweet.
During the BBQ on Saturday
evening an announcement was made
that this would be the last event Dennis
Thovson would attend with his immaculate red #18 Porsche. Though he would
still help out as an instructor he would
no longer drive his beautiful car.
In addition we received the sad news
that one of our other amazing instructors, Art Pila was in the hospital battling
a very serious illness.
A card was left in the garage for all of us
to sign.
Ever since I joined NNJR,
around 8 years ago, Both Dennis and
his wonderful wife Marlys have been at
every event I have ever attended.
Dennis has been involved in PCA from
its early days, even having served as National president. But more impressively
he was instrumental in the creation of

“ Track buddies”. Marlys helps out wherever she can,
usually all day long and always in a good mood with a
smile on her face!
On Sunday I asked Bob Vogt to go out with me
for the first run and as we sat in my car he told me that
he had just come from the instructor meeting and that
they had had something like a ceremony where they “
retired” the Number 18 and that from now on it could
not longer be used in the club! Somehow this news really got to me.
Dennis really was quitting! It occurred to me
that in all my years on the track I had never had him as
an instructor. Today was my last chance to ask him to
get a ride with him. I was determined to make it happen
and so right after I got out of my car I walked over and
asked if it would be at all possible for me to be a passenger while he was driving.
It was already Sunday and we were running out
of time and evidently Dennis was running low on gas,
but a few hours later he came over to me and told me to
get my helmet. I did that in record time and jumped in
his car with him.
This ride became the highlight of the entire
weekend for me!
Decades of driving experience combined with a
Porsche without all the modern techno gadgetry that so
many of us have gotten all too accustomed to made for
a ride I will never forget. Dennis’ skill is nothing short
of awe inspiring and it was a privilege to be in his passenger seat.
Riding up the Esses with him, on this beautiful day with the clear blue sky I was also reminded of
another ride a few years ago at Thunderbolt raceway in
New Jersey.
At that event Art Pila had been my instructor.
Just like Dennis, Art can be described as a wonderJANUARY 2016 PORSCHEFORUS

ful gentleman with many years of driving and racing
experience. Riding in Art’s passenger seat I witnessed
for perhaps the first time what the difference is between
someone driving their car versus letting their car drive
them.
Art drove his Porsche with only three fingers of
each hand on the steering wheel! The lightest touch!
He also drove it to the limit THE ENTIRE TIME. It
felt like the car would spin out any minute, but at the
same time I knew that this would not happen as Art was
confidently in control the entire time.
It blew my mind. So much so that at the time I wrote a
small article for the Porscheforus magazine right after
the event about how much fun both my car and I had
with him as an instructor.
To one day be able to drive like these two masters would be a dream come true and it is what keeps
me coming back to DE events and car control clinics
year after year.
Cars are becoming ever more technologically
advanced and that is a great thing as well. After all,
many of these new features are designed to keep us
safe and enable us to drive
faster.
Being on the track in a
new model car can sure
make you feel like Mario
Andretti even if you are
still in the green group.
However, these days if
you are an instructor at a
DE event and you appear
to me like you have a
decent amount of years of
driving experience under
your belt, as well as a car
that’s of the perhaps air
cooled variety, you better
watch out as chances are
high that I might come up
to you and ask you for a
ride.
I’ll see you at the track!

A
s many of you may not be aware, Murray Kane and
Jeff McFadyen have moved on to organize and prepare the 2016 Zone 1 activities at the Old Westbury
Gardens on Long Island, May 13-15. Their great contributions as Concours Co-Chairs during the past two years will
truly be missed. The Concours program has grown during
their leadership and entrants have increased.
Now the really bad news… Jeff and Chris Erven
have been nominated to backfill Murray’s and Jeff’s positions. Jeff had to be tortured to agree and Chris helped hold
him down. As father and son we hope to retain the enjoyment, competitiveness and purpose of the concours program
as did our predecessors. We truly believe that the program
would not have been possible without the assistance of the
judges, sponsors, event seminar sponsors and workshops
held during the year. Listed below are the names of these
wonderful club members: who have contributed their time
and efforts. Some of them are not concours enthusiasts but
come out for the comradery and a good time. If we missed
anyone it is due to the old man’s memory loss. Please kick
him in the behind next time you see him.

We may not be experts on concours preparation as
the previous chairs. We have many cleaning aids but cannot tell one from the other. Our cleaning rags consist of old
underwear and dirty towels. We will depend on all of you to
help us out. Our food menu consists of hot dogs, cheeseburgers and Chris is big on macaroni and cheese. We hope to
improve on that.
We are looking forward to a great year. Chris will
be the primarily talker and presenter since Jeff mumbles,
has a terrible memory and hates speaking. Jeff will provide
computer assistance and his goofy humor. Any suggestions
or comments would be greatly appreciated. We are outfitting
Murray and Jeff with house arrest ankle devices.
Murray and Jeff were kind enough in 2015 to organize the first three events in 2016. Details in future Porscheforus issues will be published. The events are:

In 2015 we lost Ed Neighbor, of a good friend and
fellow Porsche enthusiast. Ed was a dedicated if not fanatical concours participant with his gorgeous1978 black 911
took every award possible, whether it was Local, Zone 1
or Parade events. He also had received the Mulhern Award.
He was a fantastic mentor who personally taught me how to
prepare a Porsche for concours and had every tool or cleaning aid available. Ed will be missed but thought of often at
all events.
One last item, I was overwhelmed to receive the
Mulhern Award at the Holiday Party. I never in a million
years even thought about it. I got into concours years ago
with a 1977 rusted out 924. Chris found it in a mall parking
lot. I bought it and made it presentable with a Maaco paint
job. I also campaigned a 1987 924S that I never drove, similar to Hank Menkes. I sold it when it got too dirty to maintain. I left the club for a short time and got into street rods
and muscle cars. I got into concours again and attended and
judged many events. Since Chris saw I was having so much
fun, he finally purchased a 2008 911 Carrera 2. He got into
concours also. One of the reasons I do concours is to share
time with my son. We have a great relationship, even though
he beats me consistently. We also have common friends in
the Porsche club that we have adopted
over the years.
Thank you again.

Concours & Rally
Save the Date
The Metro New York Region of PCA will be hosting the Zone 1 Concours and Rally when it returns to
Long Island, NY on May 13-15, 2016.
On Friday evening May 13 Metro NY PCA will be hosting a Meet and Great Hospitality gathering at
the host hotel. This is open to all participants and PCA members who would like to stop by and say hello.
This is a good opportunity to check out the competition.
Saturday morning brings the concours faithful to the magnificent Old Westbury Gardens. Metro’s Concours Team will lead the Judging and field set up. The Gardens are a short 3 mile drive from the host hotel.
We have arranged an area for car washing and cleaning on the grounds of the Old Westbury Gardens away
from the judging/display area. This year’s concours winners will receive great trophies worthy of display.
We will have three distinct groups. Cars will be judged in two; Full and Street Class. The third group will be
People’s Choice.
On Saturday evening there will be a Banquet dinner which will include the awarding of trophies from
the Concours along with a guest speaker.
For Sunday, Metro Rally Chair, Rich Moores is preparing two Rallies, a TSD and Gimmick. The experienced will be challenged and the novice will have a totally enjoyable experience. Rich will keep the routes
friendly to the out of towners who will want to cross the bridges and escape New York traffic at an early
hour.
Additional details will follow, including the date registration opens. It is very important for all attending to register as soon as the Zone One site opens so you can get the information regarding the host hotel.
We secured very good rates for a limited number of rooms, but May 13-15 weekend is also graduation for a
number of local Colleges and Universities, so room availability will be very limited and our rates will only be
available for a short time.
Keep checking your local regions website, newsletter and the Zone One website for further updates.

NNJR LEAD-UP TO SIXTY
By Bob Knapik
THE FIRST DECADE OF THE FIFTIES
F
ollowing shortly behind PCA national 2015 celebration of its 60th Anniversary, Northern New Jersey
Region now begins to prepare for celebration of
its own 60th (August 24, 2017)- which can trace
its formation roots to a meeting on April 28, 1956 at the
Westlawn in Montville, during which Porsche enthusiasts
gathered to explore the potential of a new PCA region which
would become NNJR.
In June 1956 the first formal business meeting was
held with Charles Fowler elected President, following which
Charley attended the first Porsche Parade in Gaithersburg,
MD on August 29 (along with 63 fellow PCA members),
Charles wrote the initial NNJR constitution and by-laws and
actively maintained a PCA liaison.
It was the fifties, post-WWII America was prospering, domestic car production could barely keep up with
demand and European “sporty-cars” were being imported by
entrepreneurial US dealers to begin to satisfy an American
market seeking those MGs, Healeys, Jaguars, Triumphs,
Ferraris and Porsches. As a consequence, car-affinity clubs
were formed, among those PCA which today boasts the largest membership of any car club in the world.
The first dinner meeting of the envisioned NNJR
was held on May 25, 1957 at the Fireside Inn, Montclair presided over by Charles Fowler with guests that included Otto
Erich Filius, Porsche USA Representative, Wolfgang Reitzel,
Porsche US General Service Manager and William Sholar,
President of PCA (Potomac Region).
On July 19, 1957 a petition was submitted to PCA
President Sholar by the NNJR nucleus under the signature of
14
PORSCHEFORUS JANUARY 2016
Charles Fowler requesting formal recognition of NNJR as
a new region. The southern boundary of the area covered
by NNJR was a line extending from Lambertville eastward
to New Brunswick, and onto Asbury Park with the western,
northern and eastern boundary being the NJ state line.
On August 24, 1957 a PCA Charter was granted
bringing NNJR into PCA via a third wave of regions following Potomac and Metro New York, along with recognition within the State of New Jersey of its Constitution
and By-Laws. That Certificate of Incorporation filed in the
Clerk’s Office of Union County (NNJR office address then
in Springfield) and signed by President Charles Fowler, a
name still recognized by recipients of the Charles Fowler
Award which was established in 1962 by NNJR Founding
President to be awarded to the NNJR Member who makes
the greatest contribution to the welfare of the Club.
NNJR membership can expect much fanfare as the
official 60th Anniversary date of August 24, 2017 draws
closer.

first ten (racers) in America.”

33 cars. Navigation instruments not required, although magnifying glasses and French dictionaries recommended.
The Crutchlows, along with important figures in the automotive and racing world, frequented a NYC restaurant La Chanteclair, where Rene and Brother Maurice served gourmet
French food amid walls covered with autographed racing
memorabilia.
A Charles Mulhern Concours Trophy was established in 1981 and is perennially awarded to the NNJR
Member making the most contribution to NNJR’s nationally
recognized award-winning Concours Program.

early NNJR days, Underwood, at 30, a Lehigh University
graduate, operated his South Orange sports car agency
bringing resources, expertise and contacts to the Club.
Mixing it up on track with famous drivers like Briggs Cunningham, John Fitch, Bob Holbert, Sterling Moss and Carroll
Shelby at tracks as varied as Watkins Glen, Cumberland and
Marlboro, Maryland and Montgomery, NY must certainly
have made for great subject matter presentation at monthly
meetings. In a NY Times interview with Carroll Shelby in
Putting these early road racing days into perspective, Watkins Glen became the very first circuit held in 1948,
followed by Bridgehampton LI in 1949. In 1950 five more
major sites appeared on the schedule: Palm Beach and Sebring in Florida, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin north of Chicago
plus Palm Springs and Pebble Beach, CA.

Comments, observations and questions are welcome inasmuch as Porscheforus intends to cover its storied history
decade-by-decade, next up the sixties. Input
is best submitted to historian@nnjr-pca.
com along with any attachments that you
may wish to share.
Fact is that PCA requires its
Regions to maintain a record of its history
and activities, which has been accomplished in bound hardcopy format. Those
large “picture albums” are brought to and
shown at select NNJR events, but inasmuch
as they contain original documents and
16
PORSCHEFORUS JANUARY 2016
photos of irreplaceable value to NNJR, those albums are not
circulated. Consequently, few
members are inclined to spend
too much “reference library
time” perusing the albums. This
is NNJR’s effort to “share”
the highlighted contents with
the broad membership via the
existing Porscheforus monthly
magazine.
Additionally, NNJR does
produce an annual yearbook
(almost every year) and if all
goes well, we hope to be able to
offer it for sale to members at
the time of publication.
Next highlight summary will
treat decade of ‘60’s, containing
much material
Dear DE Diary
By Val Litichevsky
JANUARY 2016 PORSCHEFORUS
17
Dear DE Diary
Summer 2014 – It has been a BIG year and although I am usually very responsible, I have rationalized
all sorts of questionable YOLO behavior since I turned 50
last November...big party, girls trip to Miraval in AZ, family
trip to Italy, career change...but I am not quite done rationalizing. I have been happily driving a Toyota Highlander for
the better part of the last 15 years, but I have been admiring
Porsches on the road since college. It is mostly an aesthetics
thing; they are beautiful and sexy; they make me think wind
in my hair, blaring rock, road trips, freedom and the promise
of an adventure. Doing research, the car of my dreams, the
one firmly planted in my mind’s eye, is a 911 from the 80’s. I
test drove a few and this is just not practical. I know nothing
about cars/car mechanics, I am not a millionaire, I want to
use the car semi-regularly, I want navigation and Bluetooth
so I can conduct business…and most of all, I cannot comfortably handle that clutch for extended periods, it is like
weight training. Peter is supportive of my YOLO frivolity,
but he is not a car guy, so with advisory help from Dan and
Mike, I did it! My new baby is a black ’07 C4S. For months
I had been checking out the cars outside Robb Francis every
Sunday morning when we stop at CoCo Luxe...one thing led
to another. Might not be the car of my dreams, but it is close
enough!
Spring 2015 – loving my baby, not only does it
make me happy looking at it, it makes me happy driving it.
All those people taunting me, going slow in the left lanes? I
can bang in and out, right by them in the smallest of passing spaces; this is making me incredibly happy. I tested the
speed and my nerve, got it up to about 125 on a long downhill straightaway on I-87 coming home from New Hampshire
one morning, about a month after I got it. Felt amazing, not
a shimmy or strain! Peter keeps reminding me that I will
go directly to jail if I get caught, so I have been trying to
be good. Dan has been trying to convince me to sign up for
DE with him and Mike. He thinks I will love it, and if I go,
maybe Mary Anne might join us. What the heck, I have the
car, I might as well learn to drive it. It will probably be my
one and only, so I should make full and good use of it.
Summer 2015 – I am signed up for Thunderbolt but
not one person who said they are going, is actually going, I
hate that! Dan and Mike are going to Watkins Glen but it is
for more advanced drivers. Paul is confined to PA and NY
tracks because of something to do with a roll bar. Pete does
not want to chance damaging his car, should I bag it?
May 26 2015 – had my car checked at Powertech
today– I am just gonna do it! Snaking around I did not see
any other woman except for the one who is helping with the
tech line, I am nervous. Thank God for Mike Daino; I barely
know him but he has been servicing my car and I trust him.
He has been encouraging, helped me pick a hotel and says
I can follow him to the track...gives me his text and says he
will be there if I need him. It is enough to get me over the
hump. I am even a little bit excited.

June 4, 5pm - Quality Inn Millville NJ – I meet the
VA contingent in the lot, super nice bunch of young men,
air traffic controllers from the DC area. White Honda is an
experienced black and souped up, Caddy boy is too. But
three others; Shelby man, Red Corvette Trevor and Porsche
boy are in green with me. They are excited and also a bit
nervous. I feel better knowing I am not the only one.
June 4, 6:30pm – Tech check at Thunderbolt - I followed Mike from the hotel. He has a very pretty little yellow
car to unload and I need to get checked. First time at a track,
I think this it the Tech line. At least
thats what Walter tells me.
I am feeling a bit intimidated and lost, but I ask a few people
and find the line, no big deal, what am I worrying about.
Walter sent me across a field to find Tom Iervolino so I could
borrow a helmet. I find him under an RV awning and this is
a stroke of very good fortune, he and his peeps: Lou, Alex,
Thom, Greg, John, Michael, Ralph (aka “the guys”) invite
me to join them and I am so grateful to be included, and for
the beer. They are all really sweet, really funny. I feel like I
have found some big brothers. They let me tag along to dinner; yummy Thai chicken and then back to the Quality Inn.
I still need to wrap up some work stuff then I am off to bed.
I am nervous about tomorrow, but feeling better now that I
feel safe.
Friday June 5, OMG, First Track Day
7:45am - Driver meeting –there is talk about passing hand
signals, etiquette, being safe. I am trying to focus as my life
Okay, it really is. Why is the whole car moving?
JANUARY 2016 PORSCHEFORUS
19
Dear DE Diary
depends on getting it right, but it is all swirling around and
all I can think is, I do not have a long sleeve shirt! Ironically,
last Thursday out with the girls, the most pressing question
was “what are you going to wear?” I laughed along with
them and figured it did not matter as long as I was able to
freely move my legs. Thank God I did not bring the sundresses I was considering! Felicitas and two friends come to
the rescue and find me long sleeves. When I get back to the
guys tent later, Ralph gives me his windbreaker. Again I am
grateful for all the helpful, friendly people and I am really
happy to meet some women. I set off to find my instructor,
Bence.
9:48am - First Run EVER!! – My goal for the day
according to Bence is to learn the line, identify where to turn
in, track out and the apex. My personal goal for the day is to
get through the next 20 minutes without harming me, him or
20
PORSCHEFORUS JANUARY 2016
Val Litichevsky
my car. Everything else is looking like gravy to me. Bence
drives the first two laps – I secured his solemn vow not to
scare the crap out of me..to please, please, please not go too
fast. He honors his promise. I only hold my breath once or
twice, but I have a death grip on the door handle.
Then we had to switch, I was petrified. My laps go
by in a blur, not because I am moving quickly, I am not, I
am just so overwhelmed, that I canno’t really take it all in. I
am following his commands as closely as I can and hoping
for the best. Red Corvette Trevor laps me and I am frantic
to get out of his way and have good etiquette, but I am asking him to pass in the wrong places and after the checker
flag. I did not even see the checker flag. How can I look
for flags when I need to watch the road and the rear view
mirror and for the next turn in spot. How is it possible that
another brand new green is going twice as fast as I am???
Clearly I am horrible. Bence says we have one more lap,
then arm out in a right angle; I am extremely relieved it is
over.
11:48pm – Second Run - Red Corvette Trevor
and VA contingent have lapped me at least three times but
I am getting a little better with the pass signals. I feel ok
with most of the turns, but Turns 4 and 5 are a problem. On
Turn 4 I am not supposed to track out all the way because
there is a hard left on Turn 5, but I keep forgetting because
I have no idea I am in Turn 4 until I am in it and then it is
too late. Then on Turn 5, I am not unwinding/tracking out
fast enough because it does not feel right. I feel like the car
40+ years separates these Porsches
but our knowledge base covers them

Paintless Dent Removal Workshop
Saturday, February 20, 2016
10am
The NNJR Concours chairs in conjunction with Flemington Porsche will
hold a paintless dent removal workshop and demonstration on February
20, 2016, starting at 10am. Bill Rochford, the “DENT MAN” will provide a
demonstration on the art and science of paintless dent removal. Coffee
and refreshments, courtesy of Flemington Porsche, will be supplied during
the event. Those interested in having dents removed from there vehicles,
Porsche or other on this day, can do so by emailing concours@nnjr-pca.
com, prior to the event to schedule an appointment.
This is a great opportunity for the track and autocross enthusiasts to have
those minor indiscretions addressed in a cost effective way and for the concours enthusiasts to have that annoying ding removed prior to this year’s
competitive season!

happy and slightly exhilarated when I drive off. I have gotten
a little better, a little faster and definitely more confident and
comfortable with my car. I keep repeating “I can do it” in my
head.
2:48pm - Third run - I want and expecting to do
a little better, but I am worse! Red Corvette lappings have
increased. I am going a little faster, but I am scared and losing concentration and losing the line, this might not be for
me after all. I need to get a grip and am just praying for the
checker flag.
5:30pm-ish - Fourth run - I am on a mission to finish my day on a personal high. After a BMW/Porsche delay,
I am on the track again a little unnerved – but if the cars in
front of me can go that fast and not flip, so can I damn it! I
pick it up a little. I try in vain to stay close and I cannot, but
I am noticeably faster, have regained my grip on the line and
feeling a lot more confident about the car and its ability to
not skid wildly out of control and kill us. As long as Bence
warns me that Turn 4 is next, I am able to execute. I am even
taking the Octopus fast enough to feel like I am going to
fly out the window and squealing a little less. I am getting
lapped, but less, and the surge of terror I am feeling when I
see them approaching in my rear view is diminishing. I am
making progress, I can feel it. I leave the track on that high
and I am proud of myself.
As he says goodbye and heads off to see friends at
Lightning, I realize I cannot live without Bence – I have put
my life in his hands and he has delivered me safely through
the fire, we have bonded through adversity haven’t we? I
need him! There has not been one iota of romance and my
predominant emotion of the day has been terror, not to mention, I am a happily married woman, but I am overwhelmed
I have a question...
Val Litichevsky
with the urge to grab ahold of him and not let go. I do not
know what is wrong with me; my objective brain sees from
afar, that I am feeling...transference is it...or maybe it is
Stockholm syndrome? Thankfully it passes and I happily
return to the guys to give my final report of the day, I think I
like it!!
6:30pm - back to the Tech line and then beers and
apps, thanks to the NNJR team. I get to chat a little with the
other women, they are all friendly and helpful and encourage
me to come to Ladies Day. The guys graciously allow me to
join them for an amazing dinner at Andrea’s; Magic Mike’s
got some red wine he generously shares, I have an awesome
meal of stuffed zucchini flowers, fish fillet and I head back to
the QI tired, full and very happy. This is a fun, sweet, entertaining, generous group of people, I am so fortunate to have
fallen in with them.
9:00pm – At the Quality Inn I pass the boys from
VA and they invite me in for a beer and I listen to them relive
the day; the energy and buzz is palpable, everyone is stoked.
But it is not lost on me that they are in fact the enemy, the
guys who are lapping me like crazy and making me feel
completely inadequate. I must do better tomorrow and catch
up to them! I am going to read some Vogue and pass out.
Saturday June 6 - I Know I Can Do It!!
8:25am - Green/Yellow drivers meeting first thing and Al
talks about oversteer/understeer and I learn a few new things
to worry about, just what I need.
8:48am - I climb up the tower to watch the Red group and
some of my new friends; they are very impressive, I love the
loud sound when they roar past on the straight. NOTE TO
SELF, they are all going SO much faster than I am and their
cars are all staying on the road. I need to trust my car and
myself a little more.
9:48am - First Run and I am off to a good start,
I have not lost the gains of yesterday and feel much more
calm and confident, am going faster and am remembering
where things are a lot better. Today
I will start to use the brakes more
since I am going faster; gradually
depress before I turn in and gradually
release and then gas as I hit the apex.
Depress 1..2..3..4..5……..Release
1..2..3..4…5……. Bence tells me when
to start braking after the straight...wait,
wait, wait... NOW! Seems way too late,
I know I am going to slam into that
wall, but I will keep trying, he has not
killed me yet.
Towards the end of the run I see a
silver BMW on the track, I have not
seen him before, and lo and behold, I
think I am actually going faster, I get
my first wave by, I’M GOING FAST-

Dear DE Diary
ER THAN SOMEONE ELSE!!!! Bence kills the moment by
telling me we are under the checker flag and I, in fact, may
not pass. But I finish the run joyful in the knowledge that I
am moving faster than one other person. I am overjoyed.
11:48am - working on staying tight right on Turns
9 and 10, and holding the hard left longer on the way out
before driving the S turns a little faster, and trying to get to
90 on the straight. I am starting to like the feel of those S
turns and I am still working on the braking. Turns out, not
only do I not need to brake until it seems way too late, but
I am supposed to be full throttle until that moment. I have
been taking my foot off the gas for a few beats before braking, unconsciously maybe, but this pedal down until the last
second thing is scary. I keep experimenting.
12:30pm - We are invited to the Scungilli Racing
tent for lunch. Tent is not quite the word, this is a small city
with a 5 star restaurant. Almost everyone answers to the
names Anthony, Vincent and Frank, and they treat me like
family. I have met so many new people, learned so many
new things and felt so many new sensations, my brain is on
overload. Ok, maybe the wine last night has something to do
with it too. I am talking to 20 year old college student Anthony Junior (aka “the kid”), and it starts to dawn on me that
he is the silver BMW from the morning’s first run, we bond
over being frightened, finally, someone who truly understands me!
2:30pm - For some reason, the group track times
have changed and the greens and yellows are going together.
I am doomed, if the greens were crushing me, how am I going to deal with double the traffic?? To make matter worse,
“the kid” is now lapping me!!! And turns out Thom, big
brother Thom, is his instructor!! Traitors!! I am trying to
keep up, but it is futile, I am a loser and feeling extremely
pathetic in the speed dept. I am happy about everything else
though, doing better with the gradual braking and releasing
into the apex, going a lot faster than I was yesterday, sticking
with the line pretty well, and I have actually shifted from 3rd
to 4th in the straight part. YAY!!! Progress.
3:35pm – It is my last chance, I try to remember
everything Bence has taught me and pull it all together for
these last laps. We are doubled up with the yellows again,
but I cannot let that get to me. I cannot believe how fast it
28
PORSCHEFORUS JANUARY 2016
Val Litichevsky
goes, and I do not want my turn to end. When we are done,
Red Corvette Trevor, jokes he is not lapping me quite as
often. He isn’t, maybe twice this time. Anthony Jr. lapped me
again, but I think only once. I have a LONG way to go, but I
have come a long way too. I am on cloud nine.
I give Bence a kiss goodbye, he has been a trooper;
patient, calm and kind, he has helped me improve tremendously and I am grateful to him. From pointing out that I
should not use my emergency brake (God forbid it fuses and
I cannot get home!) to covering my headlights with tape, he
has told me enough, but not too much. I am eternally grateful
and I will never forget him or this once in a lifetime experience.
I say goodbye to the guys; they have made my off
track experience better than anything I could have hoped for.
5:00pm - I drove the whole way home with a smile
on my face, thinking about everything that happened and
everyone I met. My car feels different, I feel different driving it, like it is an extension of my body. I saw Greg and his
trailer on the way, waved and thought about how the camaraderie had really been just as, if not more, important to me
than the driving. I am going to go to Ladies Day and maybe
even Lightning in October. I think about telling Peter, my
friends, they are going to crack up! I hope I will see everyone again soon. I am going to miss them all!! Maybe I can
have everyone for a BBQ . . .
Tuesday June 9, I have two emails: Bence reminding me of some things to consider for next time - buy tape
for the lights; they are expensive to replace and break easily
on the track, buy a tire pressure gauge (which would mean I
would also need to learn how and when to use it), consider a
lug nut wrench - and a link to a helmet sale at Stable Energies somewhere up in Bergen. I do not know about all this
car mechanics stuff...seems a little over my head…but I am
happy knowing that I will be able to find someone to help
me if I dip my toe in.
And Murray sent an email asking me to consider
writing an article for the magazine. I was about to say no, I
have never written an article about anything, ever...but then I
remembered that up until a few days ago, I had never seen a
track.

A 2015 Renee Dryfus Rally Experience
By Janice and Tilo Samter
M
ost veteran NNJR club members know
the history of the Dreyfus Rally and the
associated prestige of winning the Dreyfus
Cup. But as default winners of the first
place Trophy in the 2015 Dreyfus Rally
(to be explained later), our intent in this article is to try to
convey to prospective NNJR-PCA rallyists, the total rally
experience and that placing number 1 (or placing anywhere
for that matter) is just a single component of the total experience of participating in a rally. An additional and major
contributing factor that keeps NNJR members returning to
each monthly meeting, each social event or each rally the
club sponsors throughout the year, is the sense of friendship,
camaraderie and family that being an NNJR club member
affords you. Let us not overlook that the fun of driving your
Porsche along well chosen rally routes is also a great motivator. Rallies present significant challenges and require
concentration, cooperation between driver and navigator, and
definitely some very good and quick peripheral vision. Luck
also helps!
Now for some rally details. The 2015 Renee Dreyfus
Memorial Rally was held on November 19 this year and was
not a TSD (time, speed, distance) rally, but rather a gimmick rally. A gimmick rally indicates a specific route to be
30
PORSCHEFORUS JANUARY 2016
followed, questions to be answered by observing something
on the route and a point scoring method for total mileage
traveled. Points are added for incorrect answers to questions
and excessive mileage. Lowest score wins. It is a fun rally,
not a speed test. The meeting place for this year’s gimmick
rally was at High Marques Motor Cars on Washington Street
in Morristown, New Jersey. The day began as a beautifully
bright and sunny autumn morning and we were on our way
to join the other NNJR members participating in this last
rally for 2015. The event began at 10am and was hosted by
the owner of High Marques Motor Cars, John Vogt, who was
the Rally Master. As we entered the glass doors of the dealership, a long table had been set up in front of it attended by
the ever reliable and efficient volunteer club members who
were scurrying to register individuals, assign car numbers
and insure that waivers had been signed by each participant. Waivers are required to allow you to participate in the
competition. Youngsters sometime accompany their parents
and also require a release to be signed by their parents. After
the paperwork is completed the young ladies attending the
desk, always with a smile, direct you to the breakfast area
of the dealership where a most generous quantity of varied
breakfast items had been arranged on the tables. Between the
selection of bagels, salmon, doughnuts, pastries, fruit, juices
and coffee, if you were not fully fueled to begin the rally at
noon, no one could be blamed but yourself. A really fun part
of waiting for the rally to begin, for us, is looking at all the
exotic and historic cars on the floor of the dealership while
you munch on your bagel and coffee. Seeing all those gorgeous machines makes you wish you had many more bays in
your garage and a wallet to match. It is also great to see and
talk with your fellow club members who are usually discussing some kind of Porsche issue, like finding a replacement
part or restoring this or that, or some other weird situation
they encountered with their automobiles. It is always interesting to listen to and sometimes chime in with a “Hey
yeah, me too!” Well, it is nearing noon and time for the cars
to begin departing. Rally Master, John Vogt is a very tall,
soft spoken but very authoritative guy with a twisted sense
of humor. He briefs the crowd on rally basics before cars
are sent out. Instructions are handed out at the door as car
numbers are called out. For some individuals this is their first
rally. Still being novices ourselves, it is a bit nerve rattling
looking at the list of 22 questions and lines of instruction and
it leads you to silently wonder what am I doing here? Do I
really want to do this? After the questions, John also reminds
you that his answers are the correct answers and that he has
photographs of the answer to each clue in case of any challenges. OK, so now it is time to bite the bullet, hop in your
Porsche and start driving.
Many hours are spent by John establishing these
routes. Sometimes with a helper and sometimes with clipboard on lap while driving the route. Yikes! This year’s
Renee Dreyfus rally route led us through some of the most
beautiful countryside I have ever seen in New Jersey. The
autumn leaves were the brightest and most unusual combinations of colors, sometimes on the same tree. The drive took
us past spectacular trees accentuating rolling hills of horse
farms, tall wispy forests of colorful birch trees, through
exclusive residential areas of mansions with well-manicured
lawns and up into the wooded roads around Swartswood
Lake. The scenery was so spectacular that it was difficult
to keep your eyes focused on looking for answers! All the
eyes wanted to do was grasp a fleeting peek of every scene
around you. But!! Some of the questions are really tricky
and diligence and concentration are a must. Before you turn
out of the meeting place parking lot you could have missed
something! Then, sometimes you think you have seen the
question before and with a false sense of security, conclude
you know the answer. But alas! You are incorrect! A quick
example. The question was, “What color is the fire gong?”
Well, having seen this question before and knowing the last
fire gong was red, one concludes (incorrectly of course) that
the answer to this question must be red. Ha! Good thing I
always use pencil on my answer sheet! As we passed the fire
gong on this route, it was not red. It was silver. Lesson: you
would have lost this round of the gong show! Never assume
anything! Then another tricky but clever question posed
by the Rally Master. “Objects in the mirror are ________”.
Well, the first impulse is to look around the countryside for
something glass or mirror like. But this time I was on the
rally master’s frequency. Being the navigator of our team,
I have seen that phrase so often when looking into the side
view mirror to check if my driver’s right side is clear to pull
out of his turn, that I just started to laugh and blurted out the
answer to my partner. How could you miss that one? Very
shrewd John. Well, rallies are a lot of fun but you also have
to be on your toes and stay alert.
Finally as the day waned, we found ourselves at the
end point restaurant, the Boat House at Swartswood Lake.
As we approached, we saw that the parking lot was already
filled with beautiful Porsches and when we finally parked
and walked in to sit and have some food, we looked at each
other and said, gee whiz, it looks like we are the last ones
to roll in again. How did everyone else get here so fast? Oh
well, let’s see where we placed on the list. The rally winners
are determined by the driver and navigator with the lowest
amount of points scored. You begin with a score of zero and
every clue missed or wrong turn add points to your score
which count against you. The food and service at the restaurant was excellent and the ambiance was perfect for a rally
end. There was laughing, wine and beer glasses all around
and everyone walking back to their table with very full
plates. As we squeezed into a table that just had two close
seats left, the scores and team positions began to be revealed.
We thought we at least did fairly well, we only missed one
answer that I knew of. So team after team scores were announced and we kept waiting to hear our score. As the 7th
place team was announced, we looked at each other and
my driver asked me, are you sure you turned in our answer
sheet? Then finally John reached the number 1 team who he
said totally blew everyone else’s score out the window. We
just sat there and resigned ourselves to the fact that we needed a lot more practice. Then the mystery was revealed! Peter
Lorrilard and Robert Bartaus had placed first in the rally, but
as regulations had it, the first place winners, unfortunately
did not qualify to receive the prestigious trophy because,
although rallies can be run in any vehicle you choose, the
winners of the Rene Dreyfus rally must be driving a Porsche
and both must be NNJR-PCA members. Therefore, by default, the 2nd place team was awarded the Dreyfus Trophy
and the 2nd place prize as well. Then we heard our names.
Team Samter placed 2nd. To Tilo and me this came as a total
surprise. We looked at each other stunned and did not know
what to say. We were happy to accept the Dreyfus trophy
and we really treasured the stunning metal model car of the
Carrera GT with a little number 2 stuck on it. Most appropriately, it had an orange paint job reflecting the fall season and
was provided by High Marques Motors. We were winners of
the trophy by default, but we were major winners because
we had an exciting rally experience, a gorgeous fall day and
we shared the fun with the rest of our NNJR club members.

The Concours Chair in conjunction with Pino Angiulli, proprietor of Milan
Auto Painters and NNJR Concours Pro Jerry Manna are happy to announce
what will be one of the most exciting workshop of the year. Our presenters
Pino and Jerry will provide an in depth look at what is involved when project
cars are in need of more than the basic prime and paint. With several cars
in the shop in various stages of restoration and repair they will show us just
what it takes to bring a severely rusted or collision damaged car back to its
original condition. Because of the high values of early Porsches in the current market cars that were once considered scrap are now being restored
making this information ever more important. You will learn what to expect
should you choose to take on a complete restoration project. They will also
go into what it takes to find the correct Porsche candidate car. For those
not undertaking a complete restoration, they will cover light repair, small
area painting, blending and polishing on an everyday driver needing to be
repaired or refreshed.

Lime Rock Park
April 6-7
Registration opens: February 3
Registration closes: March 23
We are again fortunate to begin our DE season with two days at Lime Rock, where we have exclusive
use of the track (no Lime Rock club members driving with us). We will be using the traditional course.
For those of you who have not driven it, Lime Rock is a marvelous circuit. Only 1.5 miles long with –
depending on how you count – 7 turns, it is quickly learned by beginners. However, the faster you go,
the more subtleties you discover. Mastering it, especially the Uphill and the Diving turns, is very satisfying.
Registration is on-line at www.nnjr-pca.motorsportsreg.com. Fees are as posted during registration.
On-line payment is preferred, but if you wish to pay by check, please see below. If this is your first
event, or if you were in an instructed group at your last DE event (Green, Yellow, or Blue run group),
please register as a student. Otherwise select driver or instructor as appropriate. You will receive email
confirmation of your registration. If you have not received notification one week prior to the event,
please contact the registrar. For further information on how to register, see our website at

Guest Speaker: Kyle Tilley
Schedule:

Lunch with Kyle Tilley – Registration required
1:15pm
Check-in for NNJR High Performance Driving
Seminar
1:30pm
Session starts
NNJR’s High Performance Driving Seminar is intended
for those who want to learn more about driving at speed on
a racetrack. It is open to all, but will be most beneficial to
those who already have track driving experience.
This year we will have Kyle Tilley joining us and leading our
discussions. Kyle is a pro driver/coach, with experience in
many types of cars and many racing venues. In addition to
sharing with us what he has learned about driving and
coaching, we’ve asked Kyle to focus on the use of video
and data in driver training. While NNJR drivers have been
using these tools for some years, this is the first time we will
have a pro give us guidance on how to properly use these
tools to improve our driving. Many, if not most of us, are not
getting the most out of the video and data we collect. This
should be a most interesting discussion!
The seminar will be attended and facilitated by NNJR Chief
instructors and will be, as it always is, highly interactive.
The session will begin promptly at 1:30PM and end at
4:00PM. For those not joining us for lunch, please arrive
about 1:15PM. A hot buffet lunch with Kyle will be served at
12:30PM. If you want to join us for lunch, you must make
an advance reservation on motorsportsreg.com. The cost
for lunch is $25.00.
Kyle Tilley
Kyle was born in England, and began racing
carts at an early age. He took to cycling to
keep fit, and eventually made his way onto
the British national cycling team. Shifting
back to driving, he rose to prominence in
highly competitive Formula Ford racing. He
has competed at many circuits, including
Spa, Suzuka, Interlagos, Monza, and
Silverstone, not to mention some tracks
more familiar to NNJR drivers: Lime Rock,
NJMP, Mid-Ohio, and Watkins Glen. His
Porsche experience includes GT3 Cups,
RSRs, and the 962. His racing record is
impressive: 65 races, 47 fastest laps, 37
poles, 26 wins, 5 lap records, and 2
championships. He currently resides in St.
Louis, MO
NNJR’s Annual Instructor Seminar will take place that
morning, starting at 9:00AM. This event is by invitation only.
Instructors must pre-register on motorsportsreg.com if they
plan to stay for lunch.
We anticipate that Stable Energies will attend and be
demonstrating helmets and safety equipment. This will be
a good opportunity to learn more about availability and
options for the new SA2015 helmets
Please send ideas, questions, and suggestions to Bill Gilbert at [email protected] or call him on 908-647-5920.

The 15th Annual
Gathering of the Faithful & Judges Seminar
Sunday, March 20, 2016
10am - 1pm
High Marques Motors
169 Washington Street
Morristown, NJ
The 15th annual “Gathering of
the Faithful is an opportunity
for all members to get together after a long, lonely winter
and re-kindle acquaintances.
This event is a throwback
to years gone by, when you
woke up on a Sunday morning, got in your Porsche and
took a drive to the local garage to sit around with friends
and enjoy a cup of coffee and
a donut or two while talking
Porsche and other assorted matters of interest.
We plan on using this traditional social gathering to introduce our 2016 concours program and hold a
judges seminar. The meeting will be in two parts. First we will review the 2016 schedule of events and
at 11:30am we will hold our judges seminar.
The seminar is open to all. Whether or not you plan to judge, you will find this part of the meeting very
informative. If you plan on showing your Porsche, this will help you to better prepare for competition.
If you plan on becoming a judge, this seminar will be a great learning experience that will guide you
though the process of competitive concours judging.
Please join us for a morning of good cheer, good chow (breakfast will be served by our host John
Vogt) and a very informative program.Concours Chairs:

Story
The Year; 2011, The Team; Brumos Racing.
As Leh Keen and Andrew Davis began the 2011 season
with a championship in mind for Brumos Racing, the end
of the season and point chase came down to the last race at
Mid-Ohio. Perched second in the overall Grand-Am Rolex
GT Championship points standing, Leh and Andrew had no
choice but to put it all on the line and bring the 2011 GrandAm Rolex Series GT Championship back to Jacksonville
Florida, home of the Brumous Racing Porsche.
The cover photo featured on this month’s Porshceforus was taken by Leh Keen in December of 2011. The
ever so famous “59” Brumos Porsche 911 GT3 Cup wearing
Brumos’ traditional red-and-blue sweeps, was flown over
to Germany to sit outside during the Porsche end-of-year
awards banquet. The photo was captured by Leh as he and
Andrew where leaving the Porsche celebration banquet
around 2:00 am. “It’s pretty cold in Germany in December”.
Soon after the Porsche banquet, the famous 59 would thaw
out once returned to sunny Jacksonville Florida.
