Toyota committed to quality
Manufacturer and dealer combine to maintain customer favour
The new management at Summerside Toyota is committed to
maintaining its sense of community, supported by the continued
quality, style, and innovation from
the world-leading auto manufacturer.
“2015 is probably the strongest
lineup we’ve ever had,” stated Bill
Booth, general manager of Summerside Toyota.
The Camry and the all-new
Corolla have been selling well,
while the popular RAV 4 continues
to increase in sales to the point that
it is difficult to keep in stock.
“They have generally become
more fuel efficient, and their safety
features are second to none,” Booth
outlined the advantages.
“All new, more appealing styling”
has widened the customer segment
that is being drawn to Toyota, he
added.
“They have been able to balance
the look to appeal to all age segments,” Booth elaborated.
At the same time, Toyota continues to include more features as
standards in their vehicles at a relatively constant price point.
Booth points out that new features are introduced as well, such
as the wireless charging of mobile
phones that several models offer
this year.
Another interesting innovation
is the Easy Speak system available
with the Toyota Highlander, a configuration that allows better communication between front and
back seat occupants through the
vehicle audio system.
The new Tacoma pick-up
also promises more power and
better fuel efficiency thanks to
a new V-6 new engine, Booth
added.
On the topic of fuel efficiency,
Toyota will introduce a hybrid RAV
4 this autumn.
Other hybrids, such as the Prius
C and Camry, are still selling well
though the reduction of a tax credit
The Toyota Corolla has been a consistent performer for both the company and its customers. Summerside Toyota promises to uphold that tradition as it goes forward
into a new era.
for fuel-efficiency purchases has resulted in greater consideration before purchase.
Still, Toyota is selling 70 to 80 per
cent of all the hybrids being sold
worldwide, making them the
Number One player in that
segment, said a dealer representative.
When fuel gets back up to $1.20
or $1.30 per litre, fuel efficiency will
once again become a question
asked soon after a customer comes
thorough the door.
Booth also identified the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle as part of Toyota’s alternate fuel future. The first
models are scheduled for introduction in the United States this
year, and he expects them to cross
the border within a couple of
years.
For now, the current interest
rates and financing from Toyota
are the best they have ever been,
Booth said, acknowledging that a
new Camry is better priced than it
was in 2002 and that financing is
the most attractive it has been in a
few years.
Toyota has made production
more cost effective, and can
arrange better financing for itself to
combine for customer benefit, but
many customers are also sold on
the low cost of maintenance over
the life of the vehicle.
Toyota’s innovation, style, and
quality keep customers coming
back.

Dealership rebranding as Summerside Toyota
widens Maritime community presence
Toyota is taking a step towards blending with its community of drivers by rebranding the local dealership as
Summerside Toyota.
It is not all a corporate decision, however: Dave and Scott Clark, who have
built the relationship with customers
over the past 35 years, have sold the operation to the Pye Group of dealerships
from Nova Scotia, embracing customers
in a wider Maritime fraternity.
“The Pye Group wanted to operate in a
small market, and they already have a
sense of the needs of small markets,”
through their existing dealerships in
Truro and Amherst, Dave Clark explained
the choice of buyer.
“We wanted to make sure our success
carried over,” and felt that the new Summerside Toyota dealership would achieve
that continuity, he said.
Bill Booth, the new general manager,
began with Amherst Toyota in 2000, and
became general manager of Truro Toyota
in 2008. The expectations have been confirmed since he assumed his role at the
beginning of May.
“The market in Summerside seems to
be similar to that of Amherst and Truro,
where you get to know everybody on a
personal basis and the customer is not
just a number,” he revealed.
“We’ve heard, and see, that Dave stands
behind his customers, and that is our philosophy as well: look after customers one
at a time,” he assured.
Booth is pleased that all the current
staff have chosen to remain with Summerside Toyota, and he is already considering augmenting the team to handle all
the tasks that the Clarks managed as well
as offering extended dealership services.
Several staff had already been added in
service and property maintenance before
the sale, while others had been transitioned internally, including Steven Ramsay who takes over as sales manager.
Booth expects any additional staff will be
from the local area.
That attention to staff was one of the
reasons behind Clark’s choice for the future of the dealership.
“I liked their take on looking after our
employees, carrying on the benefits we
have in place and maintaining their
wages at a certain level, as well as adding
in increases for them down the road,” he
specified.
“It was another positive. That’s why I
chose to go with the Pye Group: I liked
how they were going to look after all my
staff, and their commitment to our customers,” he said.
While advertising and business details
have already acknowledged the shift to
Summerside Toyota, it will be several
months before the total transition is completed.
Clark trusts his customers and staff will
be patient with the pace and flow of the
transition, as new faces of management
become familiar and all involved work to
continue the traditions into the new era.
He made a point of expressing his gratitude for the relationships that his customers have built with his family over the
decades, and assured them he had their
best interests in mind when deciding the
future of the dealership.
“We’re excited about the opportunity,
and the challenge of following in the
Clark’s footsteps,” Booth assured.
Bill Booth, general manager of Summerside Toyota, is welcomed to the city by former dealership owner Dave Clark and long-time employee Steven Ramsay who has become the sales
manager.

CAR CARE GUIDE
Honda handy and helpful
The Honda brand is at the forefront of efficiency and practicality
Traffic is busy at Centennial Honda, at
610 South Drive in Summerside, as the
much-anticipated arrival of spring
weather has warmed up Honda sales.
"People are buying," enthused the
dealer principal, Ira Kember.
The new Fit model is in demand, and
interest is high for the upcoming introduction of the HRV sport utility, which
parks nicely in a new, smaller SUV segment of the market.
"Honda product is always pretty strong,
and it's doing its thing again," Kember
praised.
The severity of the past winter had an
influence on sales, which were exceptional in 2014, but it has also prompted
and increase in sales as the influence of
winter on older cars themselves has
started to make its impact on owners.
The Honda Fit was redesigned last autumn, and the response has been very
positive, Kember related.
"A new body style, good price point,
more options, a lot more equipment you
can get on the car; our biggest challenge
has been getting enough cars," he said, explaining that the flow of imports has been
affected by winter weather as well.
"Versatility is what customers like: it's
a hatchback, five doors, you can put just
tons of stuff inside it," Kember enthused.
"For the exterior size of the car, it has
the largest interior volume of any car on
the market. The name Fit is what it is," he
declared.
MICHAEL NESBITT / JOURNAL PIONEER
Centennial Honda, at 610 South Drive in Summerside, is promoting a new business model with product advisers making sure potential customers learn all they want to know about the Honda line of products before they make their new vehicle purchase, and ensure they are happy
with their choice once they become part of the Honda community.
"That's also what has us excited about
the new HRV, because it is built on a Fit
chassis," he continued.
"Honda knows how to use space very
well," Kember suggested.

rience it, he teased.
Technology and comfort, such as backup cameras, Bluetooth connectivity, and
heated seats, are becoming more and
more standard in vehicles as well, boosting attractiveness for most customers.
"That's the world were in. Technology
has not stopped, and Honda is at the
leading edge," among auto manufacturers, he said, admiring that the company
tends towards usefulness and practicality
when considering options.
Kember related that anyone able to use
personal techonologies will feel comfortable in a Honda, but the Centennial dealership spends a lot of time in the delivery
process to explain advances, as part of its
customer care program.
"Honda is a super brand, but Centennial backs that with a good business philosophy," he explained.
"We try to be very personable. We're
there. Management is right on the floor,"
he described, noting that customers are
afforded all the time they need to ensure
they are comfortable with their chosen
vehicle.
"We are using product advisers, now,
who will spend time just talking about
the product rather than focusing on the
final sale," Kember revealed, and they are
the ones associated with delivery after a
vehicle purchase has been arranged with
a sales professional at the dealership.
"It's a new way of doing business that
we've just launched recently. We're pretty
excited" about it, he said.
"It seems to be really working well, because customers get a good feeling when
they come in. There is no pressure. We'll
just talk product and make you comfortable" with your interest in the Honda
product line, he elaborated.
"We're so confident in our product,
we're quite happy to just spend time;
when you understand our product, you'll
be very interested in buying," Kember enthused.

F-150 on track for 50 years as Best Seller
Ford brand advances with its redesigned, aluminum-body pickup favourite
The total application of aluminum in
the body of the 2015 F-150 pickup truck,
and new engine options, have the atmosphere charged at the D Alex MacDonald
Ltd. Ford dealership at 25 Water Street in
Summerside.
Already the best selling pickup in
Canada, the redesigned F-150 is a new
standard in full-sized pickup trucks, having the strongest frame and being the
most tested ever.
"There's a lot of hype and excitement
about that, not only from customers but
from all of the staff here. The F-150 has
been a best seller for many years, and the
redesign is exciting," said Sales Manager
Nick Heer.
Essentially, every body part of the 2015
F-150 body above the frame is fabricated
from aluminum. The metal is renowned
for its resistance to tarnishing and corrosion, an important factor for customers
in Atlantic Canada. The aluminum is also
classed as "military grade", which Heer
says provides greater resistance to dings
and dents.
Aluminum is also a lightweight metal,
and the weight reduction in the body provides advantages to practicality and handling.
"700 pounds lighter is like two large
people in the back seat not being there,"
compared Rod MacDonald, general manager of D Alex MacDonald Ltd.
That weight reduction is utilized as increased towing and hauling capacity, he
emphasized.
"It feels lighter," which makes a difference for the driver, MacDonald added.
The redesigned F-150 pickup is the star of the 2015 lineup at the D Alex MacDonald Ltd. Ford dealership in Summerside, according to managers
Brian Marcipont, Nick Heer, and Rod MacDonald, as well as sales professionals Bill Williams, Gary Moore and Simon Arsenault.
"You can definitely tell the difference"
in handling between the new 2015 model
and older models, Heer expressed.
Ford has also come out with new

power options for the vehicle, including a
2.7L EcoBoost engine. It is a smaller V-6,
but outputs 325hp.
The output from the existing 5.0L
engine has increased to 385hp as
well.
"The engines keep getting more efficient and more powerful all the time.
There is a big demand for gas mileage on
trucks, so the combination of lighter body
and new engines increases efficiency and
performance," Heer summarized.
"Ford is looking at the gas mileage, trying to reach government-mandated targets well before their deadline,"
MacDonald explained the company's innovations.
The electronic 6-speed automatic
transmission combines with the significant weight reduction to achieve the fuel
efficiency and horsepower that is in demand today.
D Alex MacDonald has brought a new look to
its location at 25 Water Street in Summerside,
and part of the renovation is evident in the
Service Department, fronted by advisers
Dave MacMillan and Christina Arsenault.
The F-150 has been the best-selling
truck in Canada for 49 years, and MacDonald anticipates the advancements in
design will help it earn the recognition for
a 50th time. Styles for the pickup include
regular, super, and crew cab with options
available.
While the F-150 is stealing the show,
Ford has also provided redesigns of its
Focus and Edge models, and maintained
attention to the styling and quality of the
Mustang and the rest of the family of Ford
vehicles.
D Alex MacDonald Ltd. Ford is definitely going further to meet customer demand.

Doing all kinds of the right things
Summerside Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram offers a range of new vehicles unparalleled in the local market
With a constant stream of new vehicles
and innovations, Summerside Chrysler
Dodge Jeep Ram is well positioned to advance.
"Chrysler is doing all kinds of the right
things," Brody Ellis identified as an example.
"New body styles, new models; they're
always changing things to keep them interesting," he assessed.
The most impressive introduction this
spring, however, has to be the Dodge
Challenger SRT Hellcat, he considered.
"707 horsepower. 6.2L supercharged
engine. It's just a wild, wild, wild car," he
classed it.
The unprecedented power and performance of the Challenger SRT Hellcat
is only an indicator of what the dealership
can provide, however, as its production is
limited and availability is scarce. The first
one available has been snapped up, another is on the way, but the demand and
supply will maintain them as a special
purchase according to Ellis.
That's not to say that the Challenger attraction can't be sated. Ellis directs attention to the variety of Challenger trims
that are available on the lot, with styling
features that makes the model difficult to
ignore on the road.
Dodge is also famous for the sporty
Charger, in a similar range of trim configurations, with a similarly special Hellcat
that tops the line.
Trucks are also always in demand on
P.E.I. and Dodge has made advancements
on that front as well.
"The diesel engine for the Ram 1500
half-ton is still out," in the newest model,
Ellis noted.
The 3.6L V-6 and the popular Hemi V-8
engine choices continue availability to
supply every demand.
"As for trim, they've released a new one
called the RAM Rebel," a completely different style which departs from the looks
of the current 2015 production, he described.
"It's going to have a stand-alone character," Ellis suggested.
Jeep is also a big part of the dealership
mix.

off-road.
"They're fun," Ellis assessed, especially
with the range of customizations available both from the Chrysler Mopar division and the after-market.
"The Jeep Wrangler is actually the most
customizable thing on Earth. If you can
think of it, there is a company somewhere
that builds it," Ellis assured.
"It's a lifestyle," Ellis said of the brand attraction, noting there is a Jeep Club on
P.E.I. whose owners meet regularly to
share their enjoyment of the vehicle's
style and capabilities.
The dealership itself has taken on a
new look as well.
"We've expanded. We've got lots of
room now, more inventory, more cars,
more deals...," Ellis listed the advantages
the dealership has developed over the
past three years. It is also looking at engaging some apprentice mechanics in the
service department to give back to the
community in training opportunities and
scout future talent.
It's all part of a personality that Summerside Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram has
developed since its management change,
also evident from refreshments being

CAR CARE GUIDE
Getting your car ready for spring
TIRES/ALIGNMENT
Check your tires/treads – Potholes and
hazardous driving surfaces during winter
months can take a huge toll on your vehicle's tires. At the end of the season, check
the treads and tire pressure against the
recommended pressure for your vehicle
and particular type of tire. If you maintain
the ideal pressure, you will save money at
the pump and prolong the life of your
tires.
Rotate your tires - It’s also important to
get a tire rotation every 8,000-10,000 kilometres, which helps to reduce premature
tire wear to prolong the life of your tires.
Of course, this is also the time of year to
properly store your winter tires and swap
out for your all seasons.
Check your tire alignment – The less
than optimum driving conditions during
the cold weather season can throw your
vehicle out of alignment. It’s really important to have your alignment checked and
readjusted if required to avoid subsequent wear on tear on tires and suspension components.
OIL AND OTHER FLUID CHECKS/
CHECK YOUR BRAKES
Oil Change – Once Spring is here, get an
oil change, that includes topping off of
fluids and changing filters. Oil lubricates
the engine to keep it functioning properly,
and the correct fluid levels are critical for
your vehicle's best performance. Car
owners need to protect their engines by
performing routine oil changes. If you
changed to thinner oil for the winter
months make sure to change back to
thicker oil, such as 10W30, for the
warmer months.
by the accumulation of road grime and
salt!
·Check all fluids - In the winter months,
fluids are easily depleted as your engine
works harder in the colder weather.
When Spring arrives, make sure to double
check all the car’s fluids including windshield wiper fluid regularly and top up
when it starts to run low.
Wiper Blades - Although people use
wiper blades often, this is something that
is easily overlooked. Once winter is gone,
you should inspect your blades. Clean
newer ones that are still in good condition, and replace old blades that have
been worn down by icy and uneven windshields, salt and grime. And don't forget
the rear blade if you have one.
Brake Check - Spring is also a great time
to check your brakes. Brakes generally
lose performance slowly, over a longer period of time, so you might not notice if
they are not functioning optimally. For
brakes to work properly the calipers need
to slide – something that can be impaired
OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS TO CHECK
Check your battery - Harsh winter
weather can also cause problems for your
battery's connections. Your local dealer
can check posts and connections and
make sure they are free from any dirt.

6. Negotiate When Making A Claim
Many people don’t know this but an insurance company will attempt to negotiate the least possible amount to pay you
in the event of a claim. For example, if you
have your vehicle stolen and you don’t
like their offer you can ask for a higher
one with justification. Go on Kijiji or Auto
Hebdo and search for similar vehicles to
find the average price (though you may be
able to discount a few of the lower ones if
they have been accidented or have salvage titles). The insurer basically does the
same thing, but don’t count on them removing the lower-priced ones.
If you drive a hard bargain, they will be
forced to up their offer. More often than
not, the insurer lucks out and the client
takes the first lowball offer they make.
Don’t make the same mistake!

Most Insurers require it for expensive
vehicles anyways but it will serve to reduce your payments in addition to giving

CAR CARE GUIDE
10 seconds flat
21st century car theft
BY ÉRIC PLAMONDON
THE CAR GUIDE
are just as vulnerable to hacking.
What’s the solution?
You park your car, get out and
lock the doors, turn on your
anti-theft system, then go a few
steps before realizing you forgot
something in the backseat. You
go back to the car: it’s gone.
Forget hangers
The thief connected to your
car’s on board diagnostic system
and made it believe that the key
he had in his hand was the one
for your car. The whole thing
happened in less than 10 seconds. He could also have intercepted (and cloned) your key’s
signal when you locked the
doors.
Last year, nearly half of the
89,000 car break-ins in London
happened using one of these
techniques.
The radio, mirrors, locks,
seats, lights, brakes, trunk… A
car can have up to 80 small computers (control modules, essentially) controlling all its systems.
And they provide as many targets for car hackers, who aren’t
shy about taking advantage of
the opportunity this presents.
For $20, they can take control of
many of your car’s systems, in
just a few short minutes.
Beyond theft
Once an ill-intentioned person has taken control of your
car’s brain, they can pretty much
do anything, anytime. Will they
program the brakes to fail when
you round a corner? Will the
trunk pop open in the night? Or
will they just interrupt your
sleep by setting off the alarm at
all hours of the night? The possibilities are as varied as they are
malicious.
You might be shocked to learn
that even a Tesla, a paradigm of
modern technology, can be pirated the same way your computer can: by cracking a
six-character password. You
might be even more shocked to
learn that Tesla doesn’t deactivate the password if it’s entered
incorrectly multiple times, and
some see that as evidence that
car manufacturers are way be-
hind the curve in terms of the security of the technology on
board their vehicles.
And Tesla is far from the only
manufacturer at fault: Chrysler,
Toyota, and even Volkswagen
While there doesn’t seem to
be a solution in sight in the short
term, especially considering that
within four years connected vehicles will represent 67% of
worldwide sales, the industry is
starting to get organized, bit by
bit. A group of car manufacturers have even gotten together to
create
Battelle
Cyber
Innovations, an organization
that conducts research on the
subject.
What can I do? Will my insurance still cover me?
There’s nothing you can do
beyond what you’re already
doing: being careful. Do what
you can to prevent theft, make
sure you have insurance protection that covers you in case of
theft (Section B, protection 1, 3,
or 4) and wait for a solution to
present itself. There’s no point in
worrying about it, especially
since there’s not much you can
do about it.
Car insurance does cover this
type of theft; no distinction is
made between this technique
and any other. However, it’s not
impossible that you might one
day be required to install an
anti-virus or firewall in your car,
and a condition could be put in
your contract requiring you to
update your software on a regular basis.
This is probably only the first
we’ll be hearing about this issue,
and soon enough it may become
a serious concern for insurance
companies.
Until then, policyholders, actuaries and claims adjusters
may find themselves tearing
their hair out on more than one
occasion…

Consumers drive customization,
technologies, and value
Hemphill Chevrolet Buick GMC leading on all fronts
The Chevrolet Cruze with on-board wi-fi is not the only thing new and fresh at Hemphill
Chevrolet Buick GMC, as President Jeff Hemphill demonstrates standing in front of the renovated facade of the dealership at 34 Water Street in Summerside.
for your car or truck, any make or model,
come and see us," Hemphill invited, noting that staff has even been added to the
detailing department to augment the
concept of ride pride.
The advance on vehicle mechanics has
also prompted a two-year, free maintenance program on all vehicles since 2014.
It includes basic lube, oil, and filter maintenance, scheduled services, tire rotation,
27-point inspection, and every other
basic attention that a new car requires.
In car technology, the excitement for
Hemphill Chevrolet Buick GMC is the introduction of wi-fi connectivity in most
models.
"It's a distinguishing factor. It appeals
tremendously to families, children, business people... we're entering a world
where we won't know what it's like not to
be connected," Hemphill impressed.
"I've got children, and my life matches
the TV commercials," he admitted, sometimes even having to check they are still
in the backseat so absorbed are they with
their gadgets.
He foresees further seamless integration: between personal devices and the
vehicle for aspects of customization, between manufacturer and customer for
car care, between vehicles for on-road
safety, and between vehicles and home or
work.
"Gas mileage and quality are givens,
today, and now everyone wants to
know how to connect," he reflected
on the Hemphill GM technology advantage.
Truck customization started the trend,
and truck and SUV sales are outpacing
cars this year, something Hemphill credits partly to several awards earned by the
full-size pickups last year and the quarter-ton Chev Colorado winning Motor
Trend Truck of the Year for 2015. The
Chevy Trax and Buick Encore, small sport
utilities at a nice price, have made popular packages for consumers.
The Chevy Cruze, leader in car value,
safety, and mileage, also remains a headliner of the market for Hemphill Chevrolet Buick GMC in Summerside.

Personalization and customization are
the watchwords for 2015 at Hemphill
Chevrolet Buick GMC, especially when
combined with the new technologies, values, and sheer expression available from
the range of vehicles available.
"The accessory business has really
taken off," exclaimed Jeff Hemphill, president and owner of the dealership at 34
Water St. in Summerside.
The demand has been for genuine GM
parts as well as a wider range of "aftermarket" options that the dealership can
bring in through new sources and suppliers, he noted. Even the manufacturer is
delivering vehicles with features that
stand out like never before.
"Because we've seen that happen - and
it has grown on its own - we're in the
process of dedicating major square
footage in our parts and service area," to
meet that demand, he revealed.
"Accessorizing your vehicle, so that you
don't meet yourself on the street again,
seems to be what people want to do,"
Hemphill recognized, enthused with the
concept.
From the most minute adornments to
major image renovation, Hemphill GM
will be able to help out.
"Lift kits for trucks; that's been the big
stuff but we've been doing so much it has
crossed over," to all sorts of other vehicles,
Hemphill explained, anticipating it as the
future for the car business.
"It's fun. It's car culture. Anybody who
is enthusiastic about their vehicle, that's
good for cars," and Hemphill is following
the lead of its customers.
Part of that acceptance is a shift in
business patterns. The quality of vehicles
has improved dramatically, evidenced in
a drop in warranty claims, and the new
segment of customer care is taking over.
"We continue to expand as people
come in. It started with trucks and has
just mushroomed to anything and everything. If you are looking for accessories
