Starfish One by One | 2012 Annual Report
“Education is the most powerful
weapon which you can use to change
the world" - Nelson Mandela
2012 has been a year of growth for Starfish. We now serve
more students than ever and better than ever, delivering
an average of 366 dedicated hours per student per
year. As we grow, we take time to reflect and to be inspired
by the incredible students that surround us.
One of our biggest inspirations is Concepción, who goes by the nickname
“Chonita”. This past November, at the age of 22, she graduated as the
valedictorian of her class in Santiago Atitlan. An honor that was a surprise
even to her, she has overcome enormous obstacles to reach her goal of finishing high school.
“Losing my fear”, Chonita says, has been the biggest challenge for her over
the last three years. As the only daughter of a widowed mother, the financial
situation for her family was extremely difficult. She was forced to drop out
of school for three years as a 9th grader because she could not afford to go to
school. Chonita did not give up on her dream of completing her education.
Instead, she found Starfish and worked up the courage to ask for a
scholarship. She lost her fear and started school again, even becoming a
mini-mentor to a younger girls group while in high school.
Now, Chonita has become the first member of her family to graduate
from high school. Her mother can neither read nor write, but Chonita
has broken the cycle of illiteracy through hard work and determination. In
December, Chonita was hired as the newest Starfish mentor and plans on
enrolling in university in 2013.
The entire Starfish Team is grateful to our community of supporters and we
hope that you too will be inspired by the progress we have made in 2012.

girls: JUCONI Mexico trains mentors
on the use of a strengths-based focus
with students and families.
APRIL
Several Starfish staff travel to
Mexico for follow-up training
on addressing family violence
and creating positive communication within families.
MAY
In its effort to “not reinvent
the wheel,” Starfish receives
reinforcement training from
internationally recognized,
WINGS Guatemala, on promoting reproductive health
among adolescents. Fundación Ixil replicates the
Starfish program for 30 girls
entering the 7th grade in remote
Ixil, Guatemala. Starfish mentors
conduct another visit
to the KIPP schools of
Colorado to further
explore how to create
educational cultures
of high expectations
among traditionally
marginalized students
and families.
JUNE
“I haven’t
laughed
this hard
in 40
years!”
exclaimed
Diego,
father of a
Starfish student during a family
visit from the mentor. Starfish
concludes its 6 month “Operation
Friendship” phase, designed to
create rapport with families.
JULY
AUGUST

table later in 2012.
SEPTEMBER
OCTOBER
Nine students
graduate high
school. According
to the World Bank,
each year of
secondary school

woman’s future
wages by 25%.
NOVEMBER
DECEMBER
2012 concludes with the annual Starfish
Leadership Summit. 17 year-old Irma is
named Starfish’s “Leader of the Year”.
Starfish “doubles down” on its program
by augmenting its mentorship
model. Previously, the model had 1
mentor supporting 30 girls. Now one
mentor stewards 15 girls and their
families.
Chonita’s Road to Success
22 year old Chonita
starts her final year
of high school. Her
schooling stopped
for 3 years when the
costs got too high.
She resumed her
education in 2010
after finding
Starfish One by One.
FINDING THE GIRL
As one of three
children of a widowed
mother in Santiago,
Chonita is already a
pioneer. Her mother
never attended
school and can’t
read or write.
Chonita’s mother was
married with children by
age 22. In her Starfish
group of 14 other girls,
Chonita acquires the
information to decide
when she is ready to
start a family.
BREAKING THE CYCLE
REPRODUCTIVE EDUCATION
EMPOWERMENT
Chonita’s mentor is
constantly reinforcing
her assertiveness and
resilience. According to
Chonita, “overcoming my
fears" is one of her
biggest lifetime
accomplishments.
With no one in her
family employed in a
formal job, Chonita’s
internship as a
financial assistant
represents an
invaluable source of
experience and
learning for her.
The pressure on Chonita
gets overwhelming when her
brother falls extremely
ill. Her mentor responds
swiftly to support the
family in accessing health
care and to ensure that
she stays in school.
MENTOR SUPPORT
FINANCIAL LITERACY
Chonita manages
her scholarship in her
own bank account.
Through practice
and repetition, she
breaks down the
banking barrier.
INTERNSHIP
Chonita becomes
the first member
of her family to
graduate high
school nd is named
valedictorian. In
2013 She plans on
enrolling in university.
SUCCESS
YOU make this possible!
A HUGE thanks to the incredible donors of Starfish One by One who make education and
empowerment accessible to girls like Chonita, whose parents may not read or write,
but who have the potential to change the world.
