Your Support Helps Build Quality Education in San Carlos
2013 – 2014 Annual Report Your Support Helps Build Quality Education in San Carlos 1 What is SCEF? The San Carlos Education Foundation is a non-profit organization that raises funds to support all 7 schools in the San Carlos School District. SCEF funds the majority of enrichment programs that are part of an exceptional education. Your Donation to SCEF Funds: Smaller Class Size in Grades K–3 Library & Literacy Programs Music in Elementary Schools Fine Arts & Performing Arts in Middle Schools Hands on Science in Elementary Schools Counselors in All Schools Technology Staff & Equipment Why Support SCEF? Funding for education in California has not kept pace with the needs of our students and will only provide a minimal, bare bones education. SCEF promotes educational excellence by raising funds to bridge the gap between district needs and state funding. We work to ensure that our children have access to a quality, 21st century education that educates the whole child. Our schools are better because of your involvement. Thank you for your continued support. 2 PE Programs Together, We Did It! And more. Last year, the San Carlos community pulled together and raised a record $2.48 million for our schools. Thank you for your generosity and commitment to strong public schools which made this possible. Your donations are at work this school year ensuring that valuable enrichment programs are staffed and made available to every child, every day, in every classroom. The quality of our schools is enhanced because of your support. Libraries are open, literacy specialists and counselors are available to support our kids, investments are being made in technology and related applications and students have access to physical education programs. Class sizes in K–3 classrooms remain small and our middle school students have a selection of electives in foreign language, design and the performing arts. In addition, because we exceeded our goal, SCEF is funding elementary school field trips. SCEF Funds Technology With a new school year comes a new goal. Maintaining excellence in our schools will take the continued effort of our entire community. Based on budget projections, this year’s suggested SCEF donation is $1,200 per child to raise $2.4 million needed to preserve programs and serve the District’s growing population. Your investment in technology ensures that our children have access to the tools they need to succeed. We hope you will join us again this year as we continue to Build Strong Schools Together. Thank you. Jett, Marianne Jett President Kathy Parmer-Lohan, Executive Director MEET OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM Our 2014–2015 Goal $2,400,000 SCEF is led by an all-volunteer board of parents supported by part-time staff. I am ever aware that none of this would have been possible without the unwavering and increasingly strong support from the San Carlos Education Foundation! Last year, your gifts to SCEF resulted in a record year of fundraising for our schools. We continue to count on your financial contributions, which makes a tremendous difference to the programs we can offer our students. More and more families are drawn to San Carlos each day (it seems) because of our great schools. Yet our successes disguise the reality that we are one of the lowest funded districts in the county. In fact, this year our allocation from the state is less than was available in the 2008 school year. That is why your gift to SCEF is so vital to the health of our schools. SCEF Provides Principal Flex Funds Flex Funds allow our principals to pay for site-specific programs and enhancements. As we embark on a new school year, it is good to take stock of all that we have accomplished together. I am proud to report that last year we began work on the implementation of our Strategic Plan. To highlight just a few successes, tremendous progress was made on the Facilities Master Plan which has led to construction at Central Middle School and the design of the new grade 4–5 School at Arroyo being right on time and on budget. Additionally, a great number of our teachers received professional development in Project Based Learning, technology-infused instruction, and strategies for implementing Common Core Standards. There is still much work to be done and the need for support from the community is essential to our ability to keep pace with our growth and to remain one of the top public school districts in the state. Thank you for your continued support of SCEF. Our schools are better because of it. Craig Baker FUND-A-NEED— TECHNOLOGY INFUSED INNOVATIVE EDUCATION This year’s Fund-a-Need at the Spring Fling live auction was a rousing success. Over $150,000 was raised to increase the ratio of devices to students at all schools, purchase related applications and fund professional development for teachers. 4 Pictured: San Carlos School District Administrative Council. Support for Our Schools Ask any local realtor, the number one reason that people are choosing to move to San Carlos is the quality of the schools. Your support of SCEF ensures that our children receive these enrichment activities that support the whole child and are so critical for keeping children engaged. These programs would be severely reduced or eliminated if we relied solely on state funding. SPRING FLING & GALA SCEF Donations Fund Music Programs We are proud to underwrite music in all schools including our award-winning Middle School Bands and Orchestras. Our annual Spring Fling was held at the San Mateo County Event Center. Over 800 guests enjoyed a groovy dinner and auction while bidding on items to support our schools. This event raised $507,000 (nearly 20% of our annual revenue) in 2014. 5 SCEF Funds Physical Education Classes Your donation ensures that our children stay active. Financial Performance Every year, the San Carlos Education Foundation grants funds to the San Carlos School District and Charter Learning Center that are equivalent to what we raise, plus any endowment distributions, minus projected expenses. $84,442 was distributed from the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) endowment in Fiscal Year 2013 as part of the annual grant. Approximately $609,000 has been distributed by the SCEF Board since February 2008 while maintaining a principal balance above the original $1.5 million gift. A strong endowment ensures continuity and stability. Consider a gift that supports our students for years to come. If you are interested in making a legacy or planned gift to the SCEF endowment fund, please contact our Executive Director at [email protected]. 6 Administrative $ 122,453 Fundraising $ 67,170 Total Operating Expenses $ 189,623 Total Expenses $ 2,310,855 Our audited financial statements for the year ended June 30, 2013 are available on our website—www.scefkids.org. Fiscal year 2014 numbers are presented for informational purposes. Our Foundation manages our operations using a net proceeds model, in which we view revenues net of direct expenses. As such, costs for our annual auction gala and other events are deducted from the associated revenues. Therefore, revenues and costs under U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles will differ from those presented herein. SCEF Extends Library Hours Because of your gift, school libraries stay open longer on every campus and students who need a little extra help benefit from Literacy Specialists. The State of Funding Education in San Carlos Last year, the Governor signed historic legislation that made an investment in supporting the education of high need students. Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) has changed the way schools are funded, moving from the old model of Basic Aid and Revenue Limit. The legislation is an attempt to support education at previous State funding levels while providing additional funding for low income students. San Carlos, unfortunately, will not see significant benefit from this model for several years. Base State Revenue does not get back to our 2007–08 funding levels with cost of living adjustments until LCFF is fully implemented (projected to be 2020–21 school year). Further, San Carlos has a relatively low-percentage of children enrolled who qualify for additional program enhancements that neighboring districts may receive under the new law. California still ranks 49th in the nation in per student funding. And, San Carlos remains near the bottom in per student spending when compared to surrounding School Districts. Your support is still needed to help bridge the gap between state funding and student needs. National Average = $11,824 per Student Source: Education Week’s Quality Counts 2013 1st SEQUOIA HEALTHCARE DISTRICT’S HEALTHY SCHOOLS INITIATIVE $18,814 per student 49th $8,482 per student Local Districts per Student Spending Source: Ed Data 2012–13 $20,070 $16k Redwood City San Carlos Belmont $9,517 Menlo Park Las Lomitas Portola Valley $4k Woodside $8k Ravenswood $11,104 $12k In addition to our SCEF grant, the San Carlos School District receives direct funding from other local funders. Since 2010, over $1.5 million dollars has been invested by the Sequoia Healthcare District’s Healthy Schools Initiative. This direct grant provides staff and programs that improve the physical and emotional health of students and families. The District also receives a grant from the County Health Department’s Get Healthy San Mateo grant which provides funding to improve our safety, physical activity and nutrition programs. SCEF thanks them for their support of our kids! 7 2013–2014 Donor Roll The San Carlos Education Foundation is deeply grateful to the following families, individuals, grandparents, community members and businesses for their generous gifts to SCEF received from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014. As you can see from our donor roll, families donate what they can in varying amounts. As always, we appreciate every gift. It takes all of us working together to achieve our goal. 2014–2015 Donor Levels Last year the SCEF board voted to change the way the organization acknowledges donors. As we present our donor roll for 2013–14, we want to say a special thank you to the following donors whose exceptional commitment helped the Foundation exceed its goal and enable the District to provide well-rounded and inspired programs that develop the whole child. Evening at TOWN—a highlight of the year. Hunkapiller Gift Over the years, the Hunkapiller family has made significant contributions which have helped grow the Fund-a-Need program. In 2013–14, they provided a much needed boost to our Annual Fund campaign by challenging others to donate. We thank them for their tremendous generosity. Elkes Foundation Grant The Elkes Foundation Grant has ensured that our children stay healthy and happy while getting a superb education. We are grateful for their support. de Brier Family Not only is our parent community great, we also have incredibly generous grandparents who pass on a legacy of giving that strengthens our schools and our community. Thank you to the de Brier family for their enduring generosity. Oracle Our schools have benefited from the “Technology Innovation Grant” that Oracle provides annually. These funds support computational learning and professional development. Thank you Oracle Corp! Avenir Restaurant Group The “Evening at Town” is one of our most anticipated events of the year! We thank Greg St. Claire and the Avenir Restaurant Group for this generous gift. Avenir Restaurant Group also supports SCEF in so many other ways like donation of auction items and sponsorship of Spring Fling. Bob Bredel Bob has been a steadfast supporter of SCEF and the first ever Diamond sponsor of the 2014 Spring Fling! We are fortunate to have support like his that we can depend on. Beth and Mike Hunkapiller have provided leadership gifts for many years that inspire and motivate others to give. We are grateful for the support of grandparents, like Donald and Nancy de Brier who generously support our school community. 17 Danielle Sunshine and Igal Ladabaum Sylvie Blumstein and Uri Ladabaum Amy and Alun Lang April and Jason Lasky Tanya and Matt Lehman Anna and David Leung Elenora and Adam Levin Michiko Yamori and Joe Little Nancy Livesay Corey and Paul Livesay Laura and Bret Lizundia Heather and Ken Logan Clara and Scott Lonardo Evangeline and Jimmy Maerina Milica and Daniel Markels Christy and Steve Martin Nicole and Douglas Massey* Pooja and Rahul Mathur Jean and James Mazzoni Patricia and David McAlpin Bonnie McClure Angela and John McKillop Susan and Stephen Milotich* Jay Richards 8th Grade English Teacher, Central Middle School “Through Google Drive we can transform how the students store and save their writing.
