This handsome portrait commemorates Joseph Rene Bellot, 1826-1853. Born and educated in Paris, Bellot joined the French Navy in 1843. In 1851 he volunteered to accompany William Kennedy on the Prince Albert in search of Sir John Franklin, and he sailed again to the Arctic regions in 1853. While on Inglefield's second expedition, he was travelling to bring dispatches to Sir Edward Belcher, when he fell into a crevasse in the ice near Cape Bowden and drowned; his diary, narrating his Arctic adventures, was published in 1855. The present portrait was engraved by Scott after the original oil painting by Stephen Pearce (1851), which now hangs in London's National Portrait Gallery. - "The French service never lost a more chivalrous spirit ..." Three years later H.M.S. Plover's was the first departure of twenty-one expeditions searching for Franklin. Although most of the analyses of the Franklin Search have focused on the large expeditions in the eastern Arctic, the smaller western expeditions also produced significant geographical and ethnographical information. The Plover's voyage of 1848 to 1854 was the first constant presence of Europeans in the western Arctic, and Rochfort Maguire's journal is the earliest account of a sustained foreign association with the Eskimos of northern Alaska. Maguire's journal is far more than an important historical document; it is a fascinating account of Europeans and Eskimos learning to cope with one another. 11. The original was published as a limited edition (only 100 proofs with facsimile autographs were registered with the Print Sellers' Association in London, England) by Graves and Company on August 29, 1851. It was the only print that was done depicting the Arctic Council. The limited edition print has been printed in two colours, grey and black, on Carlyle Japan paper. The reproduction is limited to two hundred and fifty copies; each is num-bered and registered. It has been reproduced exactly as it was originally issued, that is, at the same size and without a title. The Arctic Council was called into existence by the British Admiralty shortly after Sir John Franklin was reported lost while exploring the Arctic. Although the Arctic Council functioned for approximately five years it was comprised of the ten most famous and experienced men of polar exploration and British polar science. These men made significant contributions toward the geographical knowledge of the Arctic regions. They explored by land, ice and water, large areas of the Arctic which were previously unknown. Each member of the Arctic Council was distinguished in his own right having published an account of the expedition which he led or accompanied as a scientist. Shown on the print, along with their facsimile autographs, are: Sir George Back, Sir Edmund Parry, Sir John Richardson, Sir James Ross, Sir Francis Beaufort, Colonel Sabine, Captain Hamilton, Captain Bird, Captain Beechy and Mr. Barrow; in addition, are the portraits of Sir John Franklin, James Fitzjames and John Barrow. 29. Elisha Kane (1820–57) was a famous US Arctic explorer who fell in love with the well-known New York spiritualist Margaret Fox (1836–93). When their secret engagement was revealed, it caused much controversy and Fox was later accused of fabricating their subsequent marriage. She wanted to publish their correspondence in 1862 to clear her name, but Kane's family - who disapproved of Fox and did not believe the couple ever married - halted the book's publication and they reached a settlement. When they failed to make agreed payments to Fox, she decided to publish the letters in 1866. The subsequent volume charts the couple's courtship from its beginnings in 1852 until Kane's death, and reveals the ups and downs of their tumultuous relationship, especially Kane's desire for Fox to stop her spiritualist practices. It presents an intimate account of the romance between two prominent nineteenth-century public figures. 54. [KANE, Elisha Kent]. (Sheet Music) by J.C. Beckel Requiem. The author was an artist and cartographer to this expedition and he covers mainly the internal life of the small group (five men), stressing those situations in which men battle the grim elements of the north with indigenous means. Their base was Camp Daly, northwest coast of Hudson Bay. The party proceeded inland in a northwesterly directon to King William Island and back (see also Gilder's narrative). Klutschak deals especially with the natives of the area (Netsilik and Iglulik Eskimos) describing and illustrating with numerous sketches, various features of their life, their snowhouses, domestic utensils, food, dress, hunting, sledging, indoor amusements, string figures, song and drum play, etc. He depicts the party's observations and conversations in the Eskimo community regarding the relics from Franklin's ship. McClintock (1819-1907) was an Irish explorer in the British Royal Navy and discovered proof of the fate of Franklin. This book was one of the most successful 19th century Arctic books and went through many editions. By discovering that a navigable water route existed east and south of King William Island, he located the most feasible North West Passage route and the one used by Amundsen. 76. McCLINTOCK, Capt. In 1851, Kennedy was chosen by Lady Jane Franklin to lead the second private expedition to search for her husband, Sir John Franklin, whose ships had vanished into the Canadian Arctic six years earlier. Kennedy's ship the Prince Albert, was equipped with a crew of seventeen men. His second in command was Joseph Rene Bellot, a lieutenant of the French Navy. The expedition set sail from Aberdeen, Scotland in the spring of 1851 and by September had penetrated Lancaster Sound and Prince Regent Inlet, eventually establishing winter quarters at Batty Bay. In February of 1852, Kennedy and his men set out on a remarkable 1,100 mile sledge journey westward to the Boothia region. Although no traces of Franklin were found, the expedition is noted for the discovery of Bellot Strait, a narrow channel marking the northernmost extremity of continental North America. See DCB. In 185, Bellot volunteered to accompany William Kennedy on the Prince Albert in search of Sir John Franklin, and he sailed again to the Arctic regions in 1853. While on Inglefield's second expedition, he was travelling to bring dispatches to Sir Edward Belcher, when he fell into a crevasse in the ice near Cape Bowden and drowned. 123. [RAE, John]. Sabin 78171. Hill p270. Scoresby's regular whaling voyages to the Greenland fishery gradually came to involve exploration and the study of the natural history of the Arctic regions. He was largely encouraged in the latter regard through his correspondence with Joseph Banks. This work is an account of his 1822 voyage, which combined several weeks whaling with the exploration of the Scoresby Sound region (on this voyage he named Scoresby Land and Scoresby Sound) and approximately eight hundred miles of the East Greenland coast, searching for Esquimaux settlements and making scientific observations. He describes ice and weather conditions, optical phenomena, and ruins of Esquimaux dwellings and their burial places. Appended is a list of rock specimens by W.J. Jameson, an annotated list of 45 species of plants by Sir W.H. Hooker, a list of animals, a meteorological table and extracts from the journals of two other whalers. "He gave a complete picture of its lands and waters, observing everything with the meticulous eye of an inspired scientist. And all the while he was harvesting a fortune in blubber and bone". It includes a table of dates for ships' passages of the middle ice of Ba n Bay, 1616- 1849. It was originally printed in the Morning Herald but because of the silence from the Franklin expedition and the general clamor for search parties, the publisher decided to issue it as a book. Lady Franklin was untiring in her search to discover news of the fate of her husband. When she felt the admiralty was lagging in their efforts, she sponsored Captain McClintock's expedition in 1857 and it was he who was the first to discover the remains of the Franklin expedition. A rare Franklin search item. Parts of Scoresby's essay were originally published in the Morning Herald in December 1849. Popular interest in Franklin's fate made possible this separate, expanded publication 142. [SCORESBY]. by Tom & Cordelia Stamp William Scoresby. Arctic Scientist. Caedmon of Whitby Press. n.d.
