66 66 Climbing Harness Selection Guidelines
Climbing Harness Selection Guidelines To start choosing a tree saddle, the first thing to do is decide your budget. Tree work is a gear-intensive endeavor, and you’ll want to get a saddle that meets your needs without paying for features you may not use. Entry-level Professional Users Deluxe Saddles Landscapers or infrequent users can get away with a basic saddle in the economy range. A saddle with a butt strap is often a good choice for the occasional user, as it can be more comfortable than the leg loop saddles used for more advanced climbing. This type of saddle will typically be around $160. Good choices are the Weaver and Buckingham economy lines. Make no mistake, if you are a professional climber, buying the right saddle is an investment in your productivity and health. A saddle with good fit, support, and the features you need for the climbing you will do can be found in the $240 $390 range. At this point, it is worth your time to do some research on the features you want to have for the type of work you will perform, as this gear will be used daily. For high production or competition-level climbers, the saddle is a second home. A deluxe saddle like the Ergovation, Sequoia, or treeMOTION is highly recommended for this level of tree climber, as the extra investment in the comfort features of a saddle in this range will pay off in less strain, fatigue, and soreness. Sizing Harness Contents To get the best fit on your tree climbing harness, we advise taking measurements in 3 places: waist, D-to-D, and leg. Waist measurement is taken normally just like you would use for your pants size. If you take a waist measurement, keep in mind that you will be wearing your saddle over your work clothing. D-to-D measurement is most important if you are going to be spur climbing. Drop down 4” from the top of each hipbone and measure the distance around the back from hipbone. Leg measurement is most important on saddles that have separate leg loops. treeMOTION67 Buckingham Waist D to D Ergovation68 Spartan 68 Viking 69 Deluxe Series 70 Economy70 Tree Austria 3.2 Petzl Leg 66 • • • • • • • • • Avao Chest Harnesses Sequoia Kids’ 71 72 72 73 76 Weaver • Cougar 74 • Economy74 New Tribe Work • Onyx • ProGear II New Tribe Rec • • • • • 75 75 Yellow Jacket Tengu Twist Basic w/ Ds Tree Fox 76 76 76 76 76 Kids’ 76 Order online: www.WesSpur.com treeMOTION by Teufelberger SAD601 $509.95 The popular treeMOTION harness was improved in 2013. The webbing in the pack deploys, but it does not tear away completely. This means that you won’t watch your saw plummet to the ground if it is only momentarily caught up, and the force on the climber is greatly reduced. 50” Yellow w/ RingSTR101 $25 46” Black w/ Snap STR102 $26 Bungee lanyard breaks away at 250 lb. shock load. Designed to prevent the climber from being carried out of the tree by a falling load snagging on the chain saw. NOT for chainsaws over 15 lb. If the extra distance provided by the initial deployment of the tear-away webbing does not free the saw, the webbing will tear open completely after 27.5” and the saw will detach from the climber, preventing further injury from the stuck saw applying force to the user through the harness. This reduces the strength needed to grip the rope, and lets you have more endurance left to climb. Ascenders move freely up the rope but the cam is engaged when weighted, making these devices useful for ascent only. There are single and doublehandled ascenders available, and even double-cammed ascenders for use on doubled rope. The most popular hand ascenders are compact, single-handled ascenders which are easily stowed once you’ve reached your desired height and are ready to work the tree or descend. A hand ascender is a key component of any SRT rope walker system (see page 64) when used with a foot loop and foot ascender. Foot ascenders let the climber use the larger muscles in the legs to advance their weight up the line, making them a tool that can dramatically improve the ease of ascent. Like other cammed ascenders, a foot ascender is only helpful as the climber ascends the line, and will have to be disengaged to work the tree or descend. Some climbers prefer to remove the foot ascender once in the canopy, while others will simply disengage the foot ascender and continue to wear it. Foot ascenders are a key component of a Frog style SRT system (see page 64) and can also be used when climbing DdRT to make ascending much easier. A Niceguydave favorite. This is a great time-saver for large removals where it makes more sense to enter on ropes, then transfer to spurs for chunking it down. Also available are spacers for the opposite side, for those who want their spurs to be offset the same amount on each side. Works with ropes from 11-12.7mm, designed to work best on double-braid 24-strands. Only fits Gecko or Distel climbers! Spikescender Spacer 82 Order online: www.WesSpur.com Chest Ascenders Chest ascenders are used primarily in SRT climbing systems to keep the climber in a more upright position. This makes ascending more efficient and reduces fatigue in the core muscles. Chest ascenders are used with a chest harness (see page 72). CAMP Turbo 8-13mmASC192 $74 $139 $50 The PMI Chest Plate and Roller mounts on a chest harness (sold separately) to provide an easy way to keep the climber upright with less effort. The all metal roller incorporates a pivoting gate that swivels open or locks closed. This chest roller is ideal for long ascents where the aid in maintaining a comfortable posture will pay off. Petzl Croll 8-11mm ASC119 11-13mmASC119-L $68.95 $68.95 When used with a chest harness, the croll keeps you upright and well-positioned. Lays flat on the chest and can be easily installed on the line one-handed. Safety catch keeps rope captured. Knee Ascenders Knee ascenders place an ascender at knee height. A foot loop is attached to the bottom and a bungee tether tends the ascender. Pairing a knee ascender with a foot ascender on your opposite side makes for a very efficient and quick ascension system. HAAS Ascent System Regular CLI520-R Long CLI520-L Beranek Rope Walker $150 $150 CLI345 The HAAS Ascent System uses a bungee strap to tend an ascender knee height with an adjustable foot loop attached. Combined with a foot ascender on your dominant side, you can climb quickly and easily in single rope or doubled rope systems. Many climbers prefer this method of ascent to a traditional rope walker, as the HAAS makes climbing more intuitive and easier to coordinate. Will work in DdRT, SRT rope walkers, and racing rigs using a chest roller. The HAAS works with ropes up to 13mm (1/2”) in diameter. Available in a “long” size with a longer foot strap. Both versions are adjustable in length. If the length from the arch of your foot to the bottom of your hitch is 37” or longer, you will want the long HAAS. If this distance is 36” or shorter, then the regular will work better. HAAS inventor Michael Frankhauser demonstrates using the HAAS to ascend quickly. Check out the sizing, use, and ascent videos at WesSpur.com. $93 This neat little ascender system can be added onto one of our rope kits or used with your own setup. This kit was thought up by veteran climber Gerry Beranek. In the doubled rope technique, this system puts a footstrap on the Basic, which is in turn connected to the rope by a prusik on a custom bungee lanyard. This bungee advances the ascender as soon as you step up with your leg that is in the footstrap. Contents: Bungee, adjustable foot strap, Petzl Basic ascender, DMM XSRE carabiner. The Wraptor Gas-powered Ascender ASC156 $2,650 Production tree crews that face long climbs can not make a better equipment investment than the Wraptor. The Wraptor will be used every day, and can allow a crew to operate more efficiently. Ascending with the Wraptor saves wear and tear on the body, decreases fatigue, and increases production by allowing the climber to reach the working height fresh and ready to go. Small tree care companies that work in big trees, especially on the West Coast, are passing up a great advantage if they don’t own a Wraptor. Here in the Pacific Northwest, where spurless climbing can take you to 130’ or more, a Wraptor is a no-brainer! With the Wraptor on your crew, it’s easier to get journeyman-level climbers to climb spurless, and it’s the ideal way for transitioning oldschool spur climbers to spurless climbing. When the handle is released, the Gri Gri self-brakes and engages the cam to halt descent. The U-rack utilizes Hyper bars, which makes it easy to add friction or lock off the device. The rack dissipates heat excellently while still giving the needed amount of friction for long rappels. The Gri Gri can be used in conjunction with a handled rope ascender and foot loop for short ascents in the sit/stand climbing method. This rack is designed to run on ropes from 7-12.5mm and has a MBS range of 8 kN to 22 kN which corresponds with ropes you would use it with. At 9” x 3” it is the most compact rack from SMC. Order by telephone: (800) 268-2141 85 Hardware ASC210 $185 Hybrid SRT Devices SRT (Single Rope Technique) has been used for canopy entry in trees for well over 2 decades. As an access method, it has its roots in caving and big wall climbs. For years, arborists would use different ascension systems to access canopies in large trees, particularly in the coastal rainforest in the US and in Australia. This often involved switching over to a rappel system for descent or a DdRT system to work the canopy. As systems evolved, we saw the Yo-Yo/RADS system, the F8 revolver system, and climbers at tree climbing comps would use “hybrid” systems in the Masters Challenge, integrating their DdRT system as part of their ascent on a single line, allowing the individual to work a station on the way up. Now we have come to the point where there are “hybrid” devices. Theses devices - the Unicender, Ropewrench, and Hitch Hiker - allow a climber to seamlessly switch from ascent to descent. This type of setup is unique to arboriculture. Both the Uni and Hitchhiker can work either single or double rope. When one is using the Wrench, it is easy to switch from SRT to DdRT. Climbing systems are rapidly developing in tree work, making it easier to improve the efficiency of your work day. Give a hybrid device a try! Hitch Hiker by RopeTek Hitch Hiker Cord Tether ASC184 ASC184-T $160 $15 The Hitch Hiker incorporates a steel hybrid device with your hitch cord to produce a great device for hybrid tree climbing systems. The Hitch Hiker advances smoothly and engages instantly when weighted, with easy slack tending, and may be used in double or single rope systems. The dog bone the hitch cord runs through slides up behind your hitch when you advance, taking the weight off your cord and tending your hitch. When you weight the Hitch Hiker, the dog bone and carabiner are pressed into the rope for additional friction. The pressure of the dog bone and carabiner on the rope takes some of the pressure of your body weight off the hitch, allowing you to climb on your Friction Hitch in SRT. The body of the Hitch Hiker is steel, and it should be used with steel carabiners for maximum wear life and safety. The weight of the Hitch Hiker is directly on your rope rather than you. The Hitch Hiker works smoothly in both SRT and DdRT, and is especially handy for working SRT using a hand ascender to make a redirect for quick mechanical advantage. The cord tether for the Hitch Hiker allows the climber to tend the unit by clipping it to a chest harness. (Sold separately.) The Hitch Hiker is sold complete with steel carabiner and Bee Line hitch cord. 86 Order online: www.WesSpur.com Unicender by Rock Exotica ASC144 $309 The Unicender can replace friction hitches, figure 8s, and ascenders! In the doubled rope technique, the Unicender can be used as a mechanical split tail in place of a friction hitch. Because of the ease with which it advances in this configuration, it makes any rope climbing technique easier and faster. In the single rope technique, the Unicender takes the place of both ascenders and descender. When descending, the Unicender can be used in the “squeeze to go” configuration like a friction hitch - the top and bottom bar are squeezed together with more pressure for a quicker descent, or less pressure for a more moderate descent. In single line, looping a bite of rope over the top bar allows the climber to control rate of descent by varying the pressure on the rope - much like descending with a figure 8. Hardware This incredible device works by snaking the rope through the device where smooth wear surfaces apply friction to the line. The Unicender advances easily and gives utmost control over the descent. The Unicender can be used with either 7/16” or 1/2” diameter line without changing any parts, and can be easily installed midline. Morgan Thompson invented the Unicender in 2005. It quickly became very popular for the unprecedented level of control and smoothness of ascent and descent it allows. Rock Exotica now manufactures the Unicender, which has been revised and improved from the original. Drum Attachment ASC144-A $69 This after-market drum attachment invented by Richard Mumford helps reduce wear on the Unicender and improve smoothness of descent when installed properly. Requires mounting with epoxy or rivets, non-life supporting, may void manufacturer warranty on the Unicender. Rope Wrench ZK-2 by ISC ASC179 $100 The Rope Wrench ZK-2 hybrid device allows climbers to ascend, descend, and work the tree “Single Rope” with their favorite friction hitch. While the Rope Wrench ZK-2 is not for use as your life support device, it places a bend in your climbing line and takes just enough pressure off your hitch, allowing you to climb on your friction hitch SRT with ease. The Rope Wrench ZK-2 has added a pulley to the body of the Rope Wrench, which allows for easier advancement of the device when climbing. The Rope Wrench puts just enough of a bend in your line that you can easily switch from ascending on your hitch to descending on your friction hitch as you would if climbing doubled rope. A few fingers pressure on the top of your climbing hitch and you can descend easily, with the Rope Wrench following. The strength of the Rope Wrench for arborist work comes in how easily it allows you to enter the tree with a foot ascender or by footlocking for the long climb, then switch to working the tree as if you were using Doubled Rope but without having to switch out more gear than your foot ascender. See the Rope Wrench kit on page 61. The Rope Wrench is not intended for primary life support. ZK-2 is much more compact. Quick-release pin standard in the ZK-2. Stiffy Tether 10” Tether 12” Tether ASC180 ASC182 $22 $24 The Stiffy is a semi-rigid tether built to work perfectly with the ZK-2 Rope Wrench made from doubled Sterling 5/16” cord. Oceans’ Tether 2.0 Split Tether ASC179-O $55 Split tether simplifies your system by allowing you to use one carabiner to hook both tether & pulley to your harness. ISC Rope Wrench Pulley 1/2” Pulley PUL151 $28.5 ISC built this pulley to work with the stiff tethers used with the Rope Wrench ZK-2. The wide spacing between the swinging side plates gives plenty of room for various tethers. The Rope Wrench pulley will work with spliced or hand-tied prusik cords. Friction is managed by running the climbing line through the linked “zig-zag” pattern of rings. The top ring is a lever; pushing down on this lever releases pressure in the rings, and the climber descends - just like using a prusik cord. Release the lever and the Zigzag jams, stopping descent. The climber has control over the rate of descent through varying the pressure on the Zigzag lever. The attachment point for the climbing harness on the Zigzag is on a built-in swivel for twistfree ropes while you climb, which also helps make advancing the Zigzag smoother. The Zigzag has an eye for attaching the end of your climb line directly to the device in doubled rope climbing. Slack tending the Zigzag is made super-efficient with the built-in, sealed ball-bearing pulley. The Zigzag accepts ropes from 11.5mm-13mm, so it works on your favorite 7/16” and 1/2” climb lines. Rope end attachment hole now features flexible ring to keep carabiner positioned correctly, and increases strength. Be sure to download the Petzl guide to using the Zigzag and the summary of changes to the 2014 Zigzag under the “Safety & Technical” tab at WesSpur.com, and check out the video tab to see the new Zigzag in action. By allowing slack in the line above to fall through the device with even less friction, the Spiderjack from ART makes ascents in the doubled rope technique even easier. In addition, the Spiderjack also allows finer control over friction during descents, making tasks such as limb-walking even easier by permitting the user to vary friction more subtly than before. Smooth friction surface works with 7/16” - 1/2” rope. Designed for use with Petzl Am’D carabiners (page 91). Carabiner sold separately. Totally replaces the friction hitches used on climbing lines, working both as an ascender and descender for self-belay in the doubled rope technique (DdRT). With the Lockjack, friction is applied to the rope with a smooth aluminum surface, which causes less friction while climbing for an effortless advance and a smoother, more easily controlled descent. Lockjack tends slack by itself as the weight of rope below the climber pulls the line through the device. Works with 1/2” rope. Parts Repl. Clutch (1/2” lines) Repl. The ORCA is a unique autolock sleeve/gate that can be set in the unlocked position. With the gate in the “set” position, it is ready to function like a non-locker, but the act of opening the gate “triggers” it, and when the gate closes, it will autolock just like a regular autolocking carabiner. RockD ORCA Lock RockO ORCA Lock CAR141 $22 CAR142 $22 Locking Mechanisms Carabiner Dimensions Carabiners that are to be used for life support must be “double-locking,” which means that it requires 3 motions to open the gate. These are usually: 1 - push sleeve up or down; 2 - twist sleeve; 3 - pull gate inward. Additionally, a carabiner that is used to support a climber must have a major axis gate-closed breaking strength of at least 5,000 lb / 22.24 kN. (ANSI Z133.1-2012 8.1.10.) Order online: www.WesSpur.com Hitch Climber HC Red PUL120-R $54 HC Grey/ TitaniumPUL120-G $54 HC Rapide PUL129 $64.5 The DMM Hitch Climber Pulley is the most popular hitchtending pulley on the market. The three anchor holes help stack your doubled rope and hitch in a very clean, streamlined fashion, and the high-efficiency pulley helps reduce resistance. The Hitch Climber has many other uses aside from organizing your climbing system; it can be used to set up a mechanical advantage for rescue and gear hauling, and advanced workpositioning systems. See the Hitch Climber’s Guide PDF at WesSpur.com for more ideas. The Hitch Climber “Rapide” mounts the sheave on ball bearings for higher efficiency. Brk Str 5,400 lb Max Rope Height Width 1/2” 3.75” 2.75” Weight 3.4 oz Hardware Safe Usage Notes The ‘V-Rig’ uses two anchors (see the pulleySAVER or thimbleSAVER), and only one rope and hitch to create a positioning system which tends to equalize the load between the anchors. Should only be used with spliced-eye lines, as there is a risk of a tied knot interfering with the friction hitch. Hitch Climber Red and Grey Hitch Climber Rapide Should not be used on the rope bridge of a harness. Hitch-tending Pulleys A quality-manufactured pulley is the heart of a good DdRT climbing system. Using a pulley to tend your hitch frees you up for onehanded slack-tending. A pulley with multiple anchor holes can also neaten up your climbing system and make it more compact, or open up uses for hauling and mechanical advantage. Some climbers install a highefficiency ball-bearing pulley on the rope bridge of their harness. Using a pulley on the harness bridge reduces wear on the bridge and lets the climber’s tie-in point traverse the bridge more easily. (Do not use the Hitch Climber in this way.) Using pulleys throughout your system can improve efficiency. Order online: www.WesSpur.com Visual Tree Assessment VTA stands for “Visual Tree Assessment”. This is a process that we go through to determine the condition of a tree and determine our course of action regarding climbing, pruning and or removal. We take a look at several factors beginning as we walk up to the tree, looking at the base, moving up the trunk, looking at branch structure, needles/leaves, etc. We can determine quite a bit through this quick overview. On the following spread are some basics to take into consideration. This is not training and is no substitute for the training, knowledge, and experience needed to work safely. Foliage Discoloration Unseasonal discoloration indicate dead or dying limbs. may Utility Lines Co-dominant Stems Often weaker, and may have included bark or be poorly attached and prone to failure. • • • • Only certified line clearance workers should attempt tree work near utility lines. Remember Minimum Approach Distances. A selection of simple tools can aid your pre-climb inspection. Lean Tools Animal Habitation Signs of animal habitation in the tree may include scat, tracks, etc. Raccoons, birds, and insects may all be present. Animals living in the tree may be a sign of compromised structure. Bark Condition Binoculars - inspect possible tie-in points, look for hangers, hazards. Stripped bark, cracks, weeping, bulges, all may indicated maladies that have damaged the tree. Obstacles Mallet - sound trunks for cavities. Fruiting Bodies Trowel - excavate soil to inspect roots. Bird baths, outbuildings, fences, etc., may all present obstacles for tree work. Fungal bodies on the trunk or roots may indicate rot beneath the surface. Screwdriver - a long screwdriver (10-12”) is useful for checking the extent of rot. Throwline - use for pull-tests. Root & Soil Conditions Poor rooting, elevated soil level, change in grade, weeping, lack of root crown, and girdled roots may all indicate weakness at the base of the tree.
