The Griffs, fresh off a sweep of AIC, currently sit in fifth place in the Atlantic Hockey standings with 26 points, three points behind Bentley for home ice in the Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinals. Connecticut enters the weekend in ninth place with 13 points in league play. LOEWEN EARNS GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK HONORS 4Junior Andrew Loewen turned in another AHA Goaltender of the Week Honors strong performance against AIC, adding to Player Team Honors his impressive career resume. 1. Andrew Loewen * Canisius 9 4Loewen posted a goals against average of Jamie Holden Quinnipiac 9 0.50 and a save percentage of .984 in two Josh Kassel * Army 9 wins against the Yellow Jackets. He recorded 3. His nine career Goaltender of the Week honors are tied for the most in league history. 4Loewen also picked up the league’s Goaltender of the Month in December, posting a goals against average of 0.96 and a save percentage of .970. 4The Winnipeg, Manitoba native has turned in a number of impressive performances this season. He was the winning goaltender in Canisius’ first victory against a CCHA school (Ferris State) and versus an ECAC team (Clarkson). He also helped lead the Griffs to a 1-1 tie against a Hockey East school (Merrimack). Against Ferris State, Loewen stopped a seasonhigh 50 shots in the victory. 4Loewen ranks second in Atlantic Hockey with a save percentage of .926 and fifth with a goals against average of 2.54. PLAYOFF PICTURE 4With just four games remaining in the regular season, Canisius finds itself three points behind Bentley for fourth place and five points behind Mercyhurst for third. The top four teams in the regular season standings earn home ice in the Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinals. 4Canisius has already clinched at least the seventh seed. The Griffs’ magic number to earn a first-round by is four points, meaning two wins this weekend against Connecticut, a win plus a Holy Cross loss to Air Force or two Holy Cross losses will give Canisius the first weekend off. 4The Griffs have a great opportunity to gain ground on its nearest competitors for home ice. Mercyhurst and Bentley face each other this weekend before Canisius and the Lakers end the season in a home-and-home series. SENIOR IMPROVEMENT 4Senior defender John Patera has been arguably the Griffs’ most improved player during his senior season. 4Patera, who played in 23 games during the last two seasons, has played in 28 games during his senior campaign and has recorded five points on two goals and three assists. 4The Edina, Minn. native scored his first collegiate goal against RIT this season, scoring in his 74th career game. He added his second goal just six games later versus AIC. 4More importantly, Patera has been strong defensively this season. The senior ranks second on the team, and top among the team’s defenders, with a plus-minus rating of +11. The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. HUDSON GETS OFFENSIVE 4In his three seasons with the Griffs, Carl Hudson has proved that offense is his specialty. 4Hudson is enjoying yet another successful season as a junior. He has already topped his own school record for goals by a defender with 12 and his 0.41 goals per game rank first nationally among all blueliners. 4Hudson has added seven assists for 19 points. He is two points shy of his own school record, set during the 2006-07 season. Hudson’s 19 points are fourth in Atlantic Hockey among blueliners. 4Hudson’s goals have also proved to be very timely in 2008-09. In the past two weeks, Hudson has scored with 40 seconds left in regulation to tie a game and also scored an overtime goal against Mercyhurst. He has posted three game-winning and two game-tying scores as a junior. 4The 2008-09 campaign is just one of three impressive seasons for Hudson. He has totaled 52 career points on 28 goals and 24 helpers. He has the most points and goals by a defender in the program’s Division I history. 4The secret to Hudson’s success is the power play. He has scored 64.3 percent of his career goals with the extra-man advantage (18-28). His 18 career power-play tallies rank second in the program’s Division I history. Goals By Defenders Player 1. The wins marked the first for Canisius against a ranked opponent in the program’s Division I history. The Griffs are now 2-13-1 all-time versus ranked teams. 4The Griffs opened the 2008-09 campaign with a win over CCHA foe Ferris State. The victory marked Canisius’ first win against one of the original four conferences (CCHA, ECAC, Hockey East, WCHA). 4Canisius then took 3-of-4 points against perennial power Clarkson. It was the Griffs’ first win against an ECAC school and it also ended the Golden Knights’ perfect record at home against Atlantic Hockey schools. The Griffs also defeated Mercyhurst in overtime. 4Against the Huskies, the Griffs faced a 2-0 deficit but scored two goals in the third and added an overtime score for the victory. It was the first time the Griffs overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period since Jan. 17, 2004 against Sacred Heart. 4The Griffs also earned draws against Holy Cross, Merrimack and Sacred Heart after two. 4Canisius is 10-1-2 when leading after two periods of play this season. GRIFFS SWEEP NATIONALLY-RANKED AIR FORCE 4Canisius completed perhaps its most impressive weekend in its Division I history at Air Force. Canisius swept a pair of games at the nationally-ranked Falcons, defeating Air Force 5-4 and 4-2. 4The victories over Air Force marked the first wins against a nationally-ranked opponent in the Griffs’ Division I history. Canisius is now 2-13-1 all-time against ranked teams in the USCHO poll. 4The Griffs scored five goals in the series opener, the most allowed by the Falcons this season. Canisius followed with four goals in the finale for nine total goals in the series. Air Force entered the weekend ranked fourth nationally, allowing only 1.75 goals per game. 4Canisius also excelled on special teams during the weekend. Air Force, who entered with the nation’s top ranked power play unit (26.9 percent), converted just 10 percent of its extra-man opportunities, while Canisius was 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) plus a penalty-shot goal. JUNIOR CLASS LEADS THE WAY 4The junior class has led the Griffs charge during the 200809 season. 4The eight Canisius juniors have accounted for 39.3 percent of the team’s points plus 35.2 percent of its goals and 41.6 percent of its assists. 4The sophomore class has avoided any sophomore slump and rank second in points (32.9%), goals (33.0%) and assists (32.9%). 4Led by freshman Dave Kostuch, the four Canisius rookie skaters have accounted for 27.5 percent of the Griffs’ points. Kostuch leads the team with 17 goals. 4Junior Jason Weeks has recorded a team-leading 32 points and 22 assists this season. 4Spencer Churchill and John Patera are the only two members of the senior class. The two have combined to record 4.8 percent of the team’s points, meaning the Griffs will return 95.2 percent of their scoring next season. He is on the radar, and you know what it does is if scouts say we’ve got to see this kid in Canisius and you go down there and you say ‘this is a pretty good league. We should get watching it a little bit more.’ I think it’s going to give a little bit more attention to those places.” 4Scarsella has posted 24 points in his sophomore season, recording six goals and 18 assists. LOEWEN EYES MILESTONE 4Junior goaltender Andrew Loewen is within striking distance of yet another career milestone. 4Loewen is just eight saves shy of becoming the fourth Griff in school history, and second in Canisius’ Division I history, to record his 2,000th career save. 4Bryan Worosz holds the school record with 2,771 career stops. 4Loewen currently holds the top mark in the program’s history with a goals against average of 2.820 and with a save percentage of .915. MOSER DOES DOUBLE DUTY 4Freshman Scott Moser will not only be competing for the Canisius hockey team this season, but the freshman will also be a member of the golf team while hockey is in the offseason. 4Moser has competed in two events with the Griffs this season, finishing 14th at the Bucknell Invitational and fifth at the Little Three Classic. 4The Tonawanda, N.Y. native earned All-Niagara Frontier honors five times during high school and was elected Team MVP on four occasions. 4Moser scored his first collegiate goal versus Bentley on Nov. 22. In 18 games this year, he has seven points (2g, 5a). CLEAN AS A WHISTLE 4One reason for the Griffs’ success this season is their ability to stay out of the penalty box. 4Canisius averaged 21.6 penalty minutes per game last year, the most in the country. This season, Canisius has shaved more than seven minutes off and is currently averaging just 14.4 penalty minutes per contest. Only 14 teams in the country are averaging fewer penalty minutes during the 2008-09 season. 4With fewer opportunities and power play scores allowed by the Griffs, the more success Canisius is finding this season. 4The Griffs are 10-4-3 this season when allowing zero power-play goals. On the reverse end, Canisius is 3-7-3 when allowing an extra-man score. 4Ironically, when the Griffs are whistled for more penalty minutes, Canisius is 7-1-3 on the season. When the opponent is called for more penalties, the Griffs are just 6-9-3. GRIFFS FINISH NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE STRONG 4Canisius completed perhaps its most successful non-conference Griffs vs. Conferences season since moving to Division I this season. 4The Griffs went 2-2-2 in non-conference action, recording the CCHA 1-9-3 school’s first-ever victories against CCHA and ECAC teams. CHA 13-20-1 ECAC 1-5-1 Canisius also earned a tie against a Hockey East opponent. Hockey East 0-5-2 4Canisius finished its non-conference schedule with a three-point WCHA 0-8-2 weekend at ECAC power Clarkson. It marked the first points for the Griffs against an ECAC team and it was also the first time that the Golden Knights lost at home to an Atlantic Hockey school (previously 8-0-0). 4The Griffs’ season-opening victory against Ferris State marked their first win over a school from one of the four power conferences (CCHA, ECAC, Hockey East, WCHA). 4Canisius finished its non-conference schedule with a .500 record for the first time since the 200001 season.
