I highly recommend the Century Lightweight gi at $30 as a perfect starter gi. Mastering Karate DVDs 6 Club T-shirts 7 Shotokan - For beginning Shotokan students the Century Middleweight is my top pick for a starter gi as it is reasonably priced yet still good quality. However for those students who would like to step up their Karate practice in every way I recommend the Century Medium Heavyweight gi or the Kamikaze Spirit as being excellent buys. Tournament participants and higher rank students - To really make your Karate look the best it can, a top quality gi can make a big difference. The Kamikaze brand is my top pick for the mid-range and high end gi with my personal favorites being the Monarch or the Sovereign. The Europa is also an excellent gi. However my absolute favorite gi has to be the Shureido tournament cut or the Kanazawa signature gi (not listed here) but retailing at about $250. For more details on choosing a gi just visit the Products section of our club website or ask me personally. Page 2 Product Catalog 2005 Uniforms - Dogi Our club offers a variety of top-quality uniforms ranging from the very reasonably priced and popular Century Lightweight gi all the way up to the top of the line Kamikaze and Shureido uniforms. My top picks include the Century Lightweight gi and Century Middleweight gi as a great starter uniform. Next an upgrade to either the Century Medium Heavyweight gi or the Kamikaze Spirit gi is good for students looking to get a slightly better quality uniform for tournaments or just in general. Finally for the really serious students with a bit of money to spend I highly recommend the Kamikaze Sovereign or Monarch and the Shureido Tournament Cut gi. See page 4 for a full list of available uniforms. Sparring Gear Most students will get to experience sparring within the first six months to a year of training and certainly after the green belt level there is a lot more sparring practice. However yellow and orange belts also get to spar from time to time. All students therefore should invest in a pair of hand pads. A basic pair costs just $10 or a better quality pair can run from $25 to as much as $60 for the high-end gloves. Other equipment items to consider are shin pads, a mouthguard and some kind of groin protection. Some of these items are mandatory if you intend to compete in tournaments. See page 5 for prices. Training Gear Karate like anything else requires practice outside of class and a good way to improve on your own is through the use of certain training gear. For Tiny Tigers I highly recommend the purchase of a Square Hand Target (as used in class) and for Shotokan students I recommend either a hand target for the younger students or an oval target for the heavier hitters. Also for those of you who want to train even harder a kickbag is an excellent piece of equipment. See page 5 for a full list of training gear. Page 3 Club Apparel As well as the various key items of equipment such as a uniform and a pair of hand pads, many of our members are supporting our club by wearing one or more of the various club apparel items on offer. These include T-shirts, tank tops, sweatshirts, team jackets, caps, beanies and bags for all of your Karate gear. page 7 to see what we have to offer. Often these items are on display at our registration desk in class but if you want more information now then turn to Books/Videos/DVDs There are several important books and DVDs that are offered through Seishin Shotokan Karate that can really help to improve your Karate as they cover a lot of the major lesson content that we practice in class. The most useful items are the Kata and Kumite books as well as the instructional DVD series by my instructor Master Hirokazu Kanazawa, 10th Dan. some books on the philosophy and history of Karate and the martial arts in general that can help add to your overall knowledge of this art. See page 6 for a current list of these items. However we also offer Other Finally there are some really cool items that are just plain fun to have on the one hand but which can also help improve your Karate skills and ability on the other. One such item is the Herman Interactive Digital Trainer which actually measures the force of your punches and kicks and tracks your progress through the several different program levels.
