Widener University began Chester-Upland’s Soccer for Success in the
fall of 2012 to assist children in the Chester and Upland communities
develop healthy-living habits while building their abilities in
soccer. The university joined with the U.S. Soccer Foundation
and other key partners, the Philadelphia Union and Crozer, to
launch an after-school youth development program using the
four pillars of Soccer for Success–physical activity, nutrition, mentorship,
and family engagement–to address childrens’ health issues.
In the United States, nearly one in three children is overweight
or obese. The problem is even more acute in underserved
populations where children have a 28% greater risk of obesity.
Our program’s soccer activities provide a tool to address childhood
obesity while promoting healthy lifestyles through nutrition
education for more than 300 participants throughout the
Chester and Upland communities.
The first three years of Chester-Upland Soccer for Success have
been impactful. Over 1,080 participants have been introduced to
the game of soccer, learned healthy living habits, and received
mentorship. Two-thirds of participants have improved or
maintained their BMI (body mass index), while close to 75%
of participants have improved or maintained their aerobic capacity.
