Definition & Purpose
The Springfield Pictorial Christian Church Resource and Network Guide
is a listing of Christian churches within the city limits of Springfield. Our
intention is that that the Resource and Network Guide be used for building
relationships between members of Springfield’s Christian community, for
referrals, finding a church home, research in church planting, and other
educational, relational or spiritual purposes.
Scope
The Guide is limited to Christian churches within the city limits of
Springfield as of January 30, 2004. There are churches that identify with
Springfield but are located outside city limits. These are not included.
Churches of religions other than Christianity are not within the scope of the
Guide. Two churches of Christian heritage within the city limits of Springfield
requested to not be included in the guide; we honored their request.
Guide Organization
Churches in the Guide are grouped alphabetically. The book has numerous
indices in the back that cross-reference the churches by denomination, ethnic
identity, languages used in services, nationalities represented in the
congregation, zip code boundaries (used as a proxy for neighborhoods) and the
year the church was founded. For the reader’s convenience, two phone
directories are in the back of the book, one by senior pastor’s name and another
one by church name.
Omissions, Errors & Updates
We have attempted to list all the Christian churches in Springfield
regardless of size, denomination, ethnic identity, language or community. We
have, certainly, missed some churches inadvertently. Some information
changes week by week as new churches are founded and others move, disband,
or merge with others. We apologize for any oversights or errors, and welcome

We would like to dedicate this publication to the memory of three special people of God who have
made an impact on Visions for Springfield and in our city.
Dr. Bruce Jackson, former Assistant Dean of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary’s Center for
Urban Ministerial Education (CUME) in Boson, helped initiate and inspire Visions for Springfield in
beginning and continuing CUME classes here.
Diane “Di” Manchester, former secretary of Glorious Gospel Church and part of the Visions for
Springfield team, took pictures for this Resource Guide, helped set up meetings and generally
inspired and encouraged Visions for Springfield in the ministry.
Bishop J. P. Morgan, former pastor of Holy Trinity Church of God in Christ and Bishop in the
Church of God in Christ worked tirelessly for his church and in many ways for the betterment of the
city of Springfield. His work was inspirational to the ministry of Visions for Springfield.
We praise God for the lives of these wonderful servants of God. Their exemplary lives will continue

Introduction & Project History
This is the first edition of the Springfield Pictorial Christian Church Resource and
Network Guide published by Visions for Springfield (VFS). VFS began in 1998, as a nondenominational Christian ministry serving greater Springfield. The mission of VFS is to understand
and help nurture the vitality of the church in the context of the broader urban community.
Initially, a group of 40 Christians from various churches and para-church ministries came
together in a vision-sharing meeting around the question “What is your vision for Springfield?”
Dale Atlas, Doug Hall, and Judy Hall, all of the Emmanuel Gospel Center in Boston guided us in the
process of sharing 50 visions and boiling them down to theological education, research and
communication and evangelism. In response to these major areas the VFS team has moved forward
to work on fulfilling these visions. VFS partnered with Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary’s
Center for Urban Ministerial Education (CUME) in bringing classes for Springfield’s Christian
leaders. Project One, a ministry uniting pastors for evangelism, was introduced in Springfield. The
VFS team members worked with Mission Pioneer Valley with Luis Palau in an evangelistic festival.
The Springfield Pictorial Christian Church Resource and Network Guide was completed to aid in
research and communication among churches. For more information about VFS and its work in the
city, please see the section of this guide containing the VFS statement of purpose and principles of
ministry.
VFS first began documenting Springfield’s churches back in 1998, in much the same way
as Judy Hall and Chet Young of the Emmanuel Gospel Center did in Boston in 1970. The VFS team
members drove up and down each street in Springfield, initially finding 133 churches. Only the
most basic information about each church was gathered at that time. VFS began in earnest in the
Spring of 2000 gathering information via surveys through personal visits to churches and hundreds
of calls to places of worship around the city. The process has required over 45 volunteers and
several years of work.
This first edition of the Guide, printed in 2004, lists 171 churches in Springfield. The
Guide includes all churches from the small storefronts to the largest cathedrals, each with an entire
page and a photo at no cost to the churches. The information presented here will provide a baseline
for understanding the current state of the Christian church in Springfield and a means for evaluating
church growth trends in Springfield in the coming years.

In 1958, approximately thirty families, members of the historic
First Baptist Church on State Street, Springfield, saw a need
for Christian witness in the Sixteen Acres area. We built and
used an all-purpose hall for worship and social events until we
were able to complete our facility with the addition of a
sanctuary in 1992. Our mission is to share the gift of God's
transforming love with everyone. Jesus Christ is our

The FHOGC has 13 ministers, which include the official,
clergy, and ministerial staffs. Our ministries include house-tohouse prayer, noonday prayer, nursing home visits, jail and
pre-release, PA + TV, newsletter, street, and soup kitchen. The
members of FHOGC write the Sunday School books for the
various classes. One of our ministers in charge of book
production took special classes to perfect this wonderful
blessing. With such a "great cloud of witnesses" to follow, our

Appendix 1 – Trends In New Church Creation
The following trends were observed after a review and comparison of the last 10 churches (of
which we are aware) created in Springfield. The last 10 churches created in Springfield span the
years from 1996 to 2002. Six of the last 10 churches have congregations that are predominantly
African-American, two are predominantly Hispanic and the other two are White. Six of the last
10 churches (not the same six) are from one denomination or another that hails from a
Pentecostal background, two are non-denominational, and one each is Baptist and Presbyterian.
Three of these churches are located in the 01109 area, in the geographic heart of the city. One is
located in the 01119 area, on the southeastern edge of the 01109 area. The 01109 area has the
heaviest concentration of churches in Springfield and is predominantly African-American in
composition. Two churches were initiated in the South End (01105 zip code), which has a mix of
low-income housing projects and owner-occupied housing. Both of these churches appear to be
targeted for separate housing projects in close proximity to the outreach of the respective church.
One of the Hispanic churches was placed in the 01128 zip code, a relatively small geographic
area that until recently had only one other church in the zip code area. Two of the new churches
are located along Sumner Avenue (in shared space with existing congregations), with one in the
Forest Park area (01108 zip code) and one in East Forest Park (01118 zip code).

Appendix 2 – Shared Space between Churches
Based on responses to our surveys, it was discovered that about 15% of the churches in
Springfield (29 congregations) are currently sharing facility space with an existing congregation.
A full fifty (50) percent of these congregations that are currently lodged in another church’s
facilities are distinct from the sponsoring church on the basis of ethnicity or language. The
sponsoring churches have all been established in their current location for at least 20 years, in 5
cases over 100 years. In one special instance, a congregation was taken into the facilities of a
sister church, until renovations to the sheltered congregation’s church could be completed. The
typical congregation that borrows or rents space within an established church in Springfield has
been in existence between 2 and 12 years.
