The Indomitable Countess Constance Markievicz
.........................................................................................................
As 2015 flows into the observances of
1916, many of the prominent people of the
Easter Rising are again becoming familiar
to people in the Irish-American communities. Padraig Pearse, Thomas McDonagh,
John MacBride, Maud Gonne, Eamonn
Ceantt and James Connolly all readily
spring to mind when thinking about the illfated rising in Dublin. None, however, is
more colorful than Constance Markievicz.
Constance Georgine Markievicz, (née
Gore-Booth; 1868–1927) the elder daughter
of Sir Henry Gore-Booth, 5th Baronet, an
Anglo-Irish landlord, and Georgina, Lady
Gore-Booth. During the famine of 1879–
80, Sir Henry provided free food for the
tenants on his estate at Lissadell House in
the north of County Sligo. Their father's
example inspired in Gore-Booth and her
younger sister, Eva Gore-Booth, a deep
concern for working people and the poor.
The sisters, childhood friends of W. B.
Yeats, were influenced by his artistic and
political ideas. In 1892, Gore-Booth went
to study at the Slade school of Art in
London. She became politically active and
joined the National Union of Women's
Suffrage Societies. She moved to Paris
and enrolled at the prestigious Académie
Julian where she met her future husband,
Count Casimir Markievicz, an artist from
a wealthy Polish family. He and GoreBooth married in September 1900, making
her Countess Markievicz.
In 1901, she gave birth to daughter,
Maeve, who was raised by Gore-Booth’s
parents. Gore-Booth undertook the role of
mother to Stanislas, Casimir's son from his
first marriage.
In 1908, Markievicz became involved
in nationalist politics in Ireland. She joined
Sinn Féin and Inghinidhe na hÉireann
('Daughters of Ireland'), a revolutionary
women's movement founded by Maud
Gonne. Markievicz played a major role in
the women's suffrage campaigners' tactic
of opposing Winston Churchill's election
to Parliament. Churchill lost the election
to Conservative candidate William Joynson
-Hicks, in part as a result of the suffragists'
dedicated opposition.
In 1909 she founded Fianna Éireann, a
para-military nationalist scouts’ organization that instructed teenage boys and girls
in the use of firearms. Patrick Pearse said
that the creation of Fianna Éireann was as
important as the creation of the Irish
Volunteers in 1913. She was jailed for the
first time in 1911 for speaking at an Irish
Republican Brotherhood demonstration
attended by 30,000 people, organized to
protest against George V's visit to Ireland.
James McArdle was imprisoned for one
month for the incident, despite Markievicz
testifying in court that she was responsible.
Markievicz also joined James Connolly's
socialist Irish Citizen Army (ICA), a small
volunteer force formed in response to the
lock-out of 1913, to defend the demonstrating workers from the police.
Markievicz recruited volunteers to prepare
and distribute food, which she paid for.
That same year, with Inghinidhe na
hÉireann, she ran a soup kitchen to feed
poor school children.
As a member of the ICA and deeply
inspired by its founder, James Connolly,
Markievicz took part in the 1916 Easter
Rising. During the Rising, Lieutenant
Markievicz was appointed second in command to Michael Mallin in St. Stephen's
Green. She supervised the setting-up of
barricades as the Rising began and was in
the middle of the fighting. Markievicz,
Mallin, and their men and women held out
for six days, ending the engagement when
English officer, Captain Wheeler (married
to Markievicz's cousin) brought them a
copy of Pearse's surrender order.
Taken first to Dublin Castle, Markievicz
was transported to Kilmainham Jail. She
was the only one of 70 women prisoners
who was put into solitary confinement. At
her court martial, Markievicz pleaded not
guilty to "taking part in an armed rebellion...for the purpose of assisting the
enemy," but proudly pleaded guilty to

Retail Report
Milwaukee Irish Fest
..................................
Thank you to all the volunteers who
helped out at this year’s Irish Fest retail
booth. We couldn’t have succeeded without you. The weather was probably one of
the worst we’ve had in quite a while. The
heat and rain kept a lot of people home.
Many of you braved the weather and did
multiple shifts. We even had people come
back and help during the severe weather
to make sure we didn’t lose any product
and to help sell while people were stuck
in the booths.
I want to thank Nick and Glenn Nowak
as well as my sons, Eric and Ryan Dushek,
for building and tearing down a fabulous
booth. With this new set up, we were able
to keep more product in the booth which
meant it was on hand to sell.
I also want to thank some of our new
members for stepping up and coming
forward. Dave O’Meara, Marilyn McKnight,
and Kari Glasrud. It was fun getting to
know you. I hope you’ll keep coming back.
If you didn’t have a chance to come by
and see our new products, you still have a
chance at the Wisconsin Highland Games
coming up in September.

President’s Message
..................................
September is here bringing cool
weather (hopefully) and a close to our
green season. What a fantastic time we
had at Irish Fest! Yes even WET, HOT and
SWEATY...
Once again, our Shamrock Club volunteers are involved in every aspect of
getting Irish Fest ready, set and going! For
our newer members of the club and maybe
some of our seasoned members, I want to
give you an idea of our club members that
really work round the clock for Irish Fest
from set up to tear down. We have incredible people that you probably didn't realize
were so involved and many of them for all
35 years of Irish Fest. Starting with our
very own Past President and Irish Rose
2014, Julie Smith: for many years Julie
has been in charge of the transportation
drivers that move the entertainers and Irish
dignitaries from the airport to hotels to the
festival grounds and back throughout the
week. Ed Mikush has put in 35 years as
well, working in the lost children’s area.
Bob Hamill, past Irishman of the Year
2001, Joe Hughes, past President and past
Irishman of the Year 2008, and Brian Witt,
past President and past Irishman of the
Year 2004, together are a fantastic force
that lead the Cultural area in being created
and assembled. Ken Tehan is the power
behind the beautiful flower container gardens making the Cultural area alive with
color. We also have our very own 2015
Parade Marshals, Kevin and Sandy Quinlan and their family, including past Irish
Rose 2007, Patti Hogan and husband John
who run the Tipperary Bar plus four other
bar areas as well!
We also have among our members the
Maher's: John, past Irish Man of the Year
2006, Fr. Michael and matriarch Jane, past
Irish Rose 1993, involved. John is the
voice you hear over the speakers, and Fr.
Michael was the celebrant at this year's
Irish Fest mass and has been very much
involved in all the Irish Fest masses over
the past 35 years. Please join me in congratulating Fr. Michael in celebrating 40
years as a Jesuit priest.
These are only a few of the many members that have been involved and stayed
volunteers for the past 35 years - from the
idea of having an Irish music festival by
Ed Ward, past President and past Irishman
of the Year 1990 and Chuck Ward, past
President and Past Irishman of the Year
2009, also members of the club, to voting
to donate money from the Shamrock Club
to get the party started, shall we say!
We have a long and rich history in
Milwaukee and we have the best volunteers! I am just a newbie, celebrating only
9 years as a member of the Shamrock
Club and volunteer at Irish Fest (Transportation Driver), but I jumped in with my
family and have never regretted a moment
of service. I am honored to give service
along side those seasoned volunteers that
include past President and past Irishman
of the Year 2010, Josh Walton (Transportation Driver) - 35 years, past Parade
Marshals, Mike and Mary Moze - 35
years, past Parade Marshal and Irishman
of the Year 2015 Del Canon (Cultural
area) - 20 years, and his lovely wife, Pam
Canon, Irish Rose 2015, and daughter, Erin
both with 10 years of service at Irish Fest.
And, we cannot forget Kathy Donovan,
past President and past Irish Rose 2009
(Transportation Trailer), and her handsome
husband, Ald. Bob Donovan, (Transportation Driver), our very own St. Patrick and
past Parade Marshals, Pete (Transportation Driver) and Dawn Fleming (Transportation Trailer) all with 10+ years of IF
service, and Malkin Wallace, past parade
Marshal (Transportation Driver).
This is just a starting of those involved
working tirelessly for the Club first and
Irish Fest, too! Please know that if I have
not mentioned you here it is not because I
am forgetting you on purpose, but that I
am unaware of all you do! I thank you all
for the time and talents that you extend to
the club especially our Board members,
past and present! It seems as club members,
we give the gift of ourselves to the point of
exhaustion and yet are able to rise again
and again with renewed strength and energy event after event! A Huge THANK
YOU to the Glenn Nowak, Irishman of the
Year 2012 who not only is our Membership chair but also our Retail Co-Chair,
along with Sue Dushek, for managing our
volunteers and working at Retail and Cultural areas all weekend, as well! I know in
spite of the torrential rain on Friday night
and the unbearable heat the rest of the
weekend we had wonderful sales totals
and signed new members also!
I could go on and on, and I hope this
gives those new members a place to start
in contacting folks so that you can volunteer. Remember we Irish love to have your
children and grandchildren involved too!
Remember, it is not how much we give
but how much love we put into giving.

Eamon O’Leary and Jefferson Hamer
present traditional and original folk songs
with close harmonies and deft instrumental arrangements. The duo’s self-titled first
album has a “lovely and unusual repertoire” according to The Huffington Post,
which also praised “the delicacy of the
arrangements: two tenor voices...making
the most of the harmony and counterpoint.”
Born in Dublin, Eamon grew up playing music and after moving to New York
in the early 1990s, immersed himself in
the traditional music scene along with
touring extensively with many of the great
Irish players. Eamon is a member of the
Celtic music trio ALT with Nuala Kennedy
and John Doyle, a band featured in the
Scotland Music Showcase during the 2014
Milwaukee Irish Fest. He also taught
bouzouki at the Irish Fest Summer School.
Based in Brooklyn, Jefferson is an
acclaimed musician about whom Acoustic
Guitar magazine wrote, “A gifted guitarist
and singer, Hamer is able to hit close harmonies...and weave gorgeous instrumental lines.” In 2013, he and songwriter
Anais Mitchell released Child Ballads, a
collection of new adaptations of English
and Scottish folk songs which won a BBC
Radio 2 Folk Award.
Tickets for the show are $21 in advance, $25 on concert day and $10 for
students with ID. To order online, visit
www.ichc.net. Tickets may also be
ordered by calling (414) 345-8800.

having attempted "to cause disaffection
among the civil population of His
Majesty," and she told the court, "I did
what I thought was right and I stand by it."
She was sentenced to death, but General
Maxwell commuted this to life in prison
on "account of the prisoner's sex.” It was
reported that she told the court, "I do wish
your lot had the decency to shoot me."
only five weeks later, before she could
take up her seat.
In 1918, Markievicz was elected one of
73 Sinn Féin MPs, making her the first
woman elected to the British House of
Commons. In line with abstentionist
policy, she did not take her seat.
Seán O'Casey said of her: "One thing
she had in abundance - physical courage;
with that she was clothed as with a
garment."
- Mary Crivello Witt
Markievicz was transferred to Mountjoy
Prison and then to Aylesbury Prison in
England in July 1916. She was released
from prison in 1917, with others involved
in the Rising, as part of an amnesty.
The first meeting of the First Dáil (the
Parliament of the revolutionary Irish
Republic) found Markievicz in prison.
When her name was called, she was
described, like many of those elected, as
being "imprisoned by the foreign enemy"
(fé ghlas ag Gallaibh). She was re-elected
to the Second Dáil in the elections
of 1921.
Markievicz served as Minister for
Labour from April 1919 to January 1922,
in the Second Ministry and the Third
Ministry of the Dáil. She became both the
first Irish female Cabinet Minister and
only the second female government
minister in Europe. She was the only
female cabinet minister in Irish history
until 1979 when Máire Geoghegan-Quinn
was appointed to the cabinet post of
Minister for the Gaeltacht for Fianna Fáil.
Markievicz left government in January
1922 along with Éamon de Valera and
others in opposition to the Anglo-Irish
Treaty. She was not elected in the 1922
Irish general election but was returned in
the 1923 general election for the Dublin
South constituency. In common with other
Republican candidates, she did not take
her seat. Her staunch republican views led
her to being sent to jail again. She and 92
other female prisoners went on hunger
strike. Within a month, she was released.
She joined Fianna Fáil on its foundation
in 1926, chairing the inaugural meeting of
the new party. In June 1927, she was
re-elected to the 5th Dáil as a candidate for
the new Fianna Fáil party, which was
pledged to return to Dáil Éireann, but died
She died at the age of 59 of complications related to appendicitis in a public
ward "among the poor where she wanted
to be.” She had given away the last of her
wealth. One of the doctors attending her
was her revolutionary colleague, Kathleen
Lynn. Also at her bedside were Casimir
and Stanislas Markievicz, Éamon de
Valera and Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington.
Refused a state funeral by the Free State
government, she was buried at Glasnevin
Cemetery, Dublin, and de Valera gave the
funeral oration.

Friday night didn’t go quite as planned
with the parade being canceled at the last
minute due to the weather. But there’s always a silver lining…..most of us were
under cover in the building with the FREE
soda and beer taps. Mmmmm….don’t
you just hate when that happens? ☺
On Saturday, we performed twice: at the
main gate for the opening of the Fest and
then again in the afternoon parade. We
sounded great both times and I think the
crowd was happy we were there.
Then, before we knew it, it was Sunday
morning and we had a full day ahead of
us. We peformed for the morning mass
and then ate a hearty breakfast compliments of band Mom Terry Mayes and
Christine, owner of McBob’s Pub & Grill
at 49th and North Ave. In the early afternoon we had our band performance at The
Crossroads, which was our best performance all summer! And then those of us
who weren’t overcome by the heat
marched in the final parade of the Fest in
the late afternoon. Overall, it was a wonderful weekend for the band and I give
Noel Tylla, Pipe Major, credit for making
us look & sound so good.
