A 59-year-old homeowner shot and wounded suspect Sal Anthony Olmos, 19, of Mesa as he and two other hooded suspects attempted to break in the back door of the residence. Tim Gaffney, of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), stated that the incident occured around 8:20 p.m. in the 2600 block of West Canyon Street (near McKellips Rd. and N. Delaware Dr.) when the homeowner heard noise at his back door and saw three hooded, armed men on his home security camera. The homeowner fired a shotgun round through the door wounding Olmos in the groin and upper legs. Someone else in the home reported seeing a laser sight pointed at his head from outside and fired a shot from his handgun. The suspects outside returned fire from handguns and then fled the scene, but Olmos was later found in a neighbor’s yard, unable to run with his non-life-threatening wounds. According to Gaffney, the suspect said he was owed a large sum of money by one of the individuals inside the home and he went to the home with two other suspects to collect the money. Olmos admitted they were all armed and brought “black zip-ties” so they were “prepared for whatever.” In the yard where Olmos was found, detectives recovered black zip-ties, a hooded sweatshirt and a .45 caliber handgun. Sheriff Paul Babeu stated, “Sal Olmos admitted to shooting the handgun into the home and being high on methamphetamines for several days. By Bill Van Nimwegen The News Pinal County Supervisor Steve Miller would like to see the county jail off the budget. It has been costing the County millions annually since a contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was negotiated in 2006. An audit in 2012 revealed that the ICE prisoners were costing the county more to house than the contract pays. Supervisor Steve Miller (left) and Sheriff Paul Babeu (right) At the Supervisors work session on Wednesday, March 19, Miller proposed cancelling the ICE contract and selling the jail to a pri- vate company. Miller is concerned that the jail is draining the County’s general fund and said “If we were to unload that jail, we could (save) $8 million a year.” Sheriff Paul Babeu was reportedly surprised and outraged by the suggestion. As reported by Brian Wright in the Maricopa Monitor, Babeu said “The law states that the sheriff shall maintain the care (and) custody of the county see Jail, A-8 One Arrested in Apartment Fire Investigators determined arson was likely cause of blaze Apache Junction Police (AJPD) have arrested the resident of an apartment that caught fire on Monday, March 17, 2014. Flown in Afghanistan by AJPD Officer Drake By Bill Van Nimwegen The News In his regular City Council meeting convocations, Councilman Chip Wilson, a veteran of 22 years in the U.S. Air Force, always asks for the safety of the men and women serving our country in the military. All in attendance know that many from this community are in danger far from home and join Wilson in his prayer. Apache Junction Police Officer Steven Drake has recently returned home safely and on Tuesday, March 18, brought the City Council a memento of the time he spent in Afghanistan. Drake also thanked city staff for taking care of his family while he was away. “I recently had an all-expenses-paid vacation in Afghanistan courtesy of the United States Military,” began Officer Drake. Officer Drake served for about eight months at Bagram Air Base, the largest U.S. Area’s Only H The Hometown Owned base in Afghanistan. He described it as the place where all combat operations in and out of Afghanistan are stationed with a population of 35,000. “Every three minutes at Bagram something lands, takes off or blows up,” Drake continued. Add in a moving train with rail switches, lights and whistles—all lovingly miniaturized—and you become a modern Gulliver in Lilliput. The effect is magic. They came to help as individuals, couples, families, and groups because they wanted to make a difference. This effort was led by Leslie Bennett, member of the Northern Pinal Partnership Open Space Committee and desert environmentalist. March 24 - 30, 2014 Page A-7 Viewpoint & Opinion “The most perfect political community is one in which the middle class is in control, and outnumbers both of the other classes.” — Aristotle No good deed goes unpunished We really hate to send this Letter to the Editor. I feel ashamed to report how badly we were taken by this man. But, perhaps if we report our experience, others will not suffer the same fate. My wife and I could not have children. She always wanted them, but I was injured and became unable to have children. Tony and his wife have four lovely girls. My wife fell in love with them. When we moved from Albuquerque to Apache Junction, we helped them to move here with us financially. He helped us to move our things physically. When we bought a second house in Apache Junction with four bedrooms, we allowed them to move into it. The agreement was that after he got settled here and got a job, he would start paying rent in January, 2012. They moved in during March 2011 and never paid a single month’s rent until Adult Protective Services helped us to get them out as of December, 2012. So they lived in our house rent-free for 18 months. In addition, we paid for their sewage and water bills. We made no attempt to collect past due rent. In addition, we gave them a lot of money. We have gotten nothing back at all even though the agreement was that they would pay us back. In addition, I bought both him and his wife iPhones to get his landscaping and home repair business started. Yet, when he moved out, he caused $6,000 worth of damage to the house (receipts available). Doors were caved in, walls were damaged, and we had to paint the entire house, inside and outside. I have included some of the checks we paid to them. Please, do not print his full name. After they moved out of our house, our garage door was damaged three times (police reports made). I found two dead pigeons in front of our house (photos made). And our new gardener found poisonous mushrooms (Death Caps and Destroying Angels) in our back yard. These vicious acts convinced me that this man would not hesitate to use violence against us. In fact, tonight, March 16 at 2:57 AM as I write this letter, there was a prowler in our back yard again. We called the police and Officer Hicks arrived to check out the property. He did not find anyone, but the motion detecting lights and alarms in the back did go off a half hour before. Russian Fox A Russian newsman has raised global eyebrows by noting in a television commentary that Russia is “the only country in the world capable of turning the USA into radioactive dust.” Dmitry Kiselyov delivered a diatribe against critics of the Ukraine incursion with a picture of a mushroom cloud on the studio wall behind him. At one point, Kiselyov attributed President Obama’s increasingly gray hair to worries about Russia’s nuclear arsenal. Mr. Kiselyov actually has a pretty good point. Russia still has an estimated 8,500 nuclear warheads, which is more than the United States. However, the point Kiselyov is missing is that the U.S. also has more than enough nuclear weapons to turn Russia into “radioactive dust.” An example of two dimensional Russian thinking. Trailing 2-0, Apache Junction tied the game 2-2 in the last half of the sixth inning on a RBI fielder’s choice from Nick Iannettone to score Prescott Horn, and a run-scoring triple to left center field from Brett Darling that scored Iannettone. Neither team scored in the seventh and then Poston Butte put up three runs without a hit in the eighth inning, and held on for the 5-3 win. Poston Butte took advantage of three walks, a hit batter and a misplayed sacrifice bunt to score their three runs in the eighth. The Prospectors came back with one run in their eighth, a RBI single by Iannettone to score Justin Willis, who singled to get on base. Adam Abbatacola tossed 5 and 2/3 solid innings from the mound, allowing just four hits and one earned run. Nick Lee Gay tossed an inning and a third of scoreless relief, and Christian McDonald pitched one inning without yielding a hit or run. Iannettone added an infield single in the loss and Ben Barchilon had a pair of singles for the Prospectors.
